STUDENT COMPUTER UPDATE

Student Computer Purchases It’s great to see more students organising their own computer device for use at school. Please remember our preferred

option is still to buy a computer through our JB purchase plan as we know these devices are new technology that will last

throughout your student’s school years and each device has been tested to make sure it meets all of our specifications. If you

already have a computer please arrange to bring it in and have it checked to see if it is suitable to connect to our network.

Application forms for this are available from Mr Stephen Bath. More information is available on our website at http://

www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au/Computers/2014-student-computers

Parent/Student Portal All families should now have received a letter explaining how to log on to your own personal portal using the secure log on

supplied. I urge you to log on and check out the data and course information available for all students. If you have not

received a letter it may mean you need to update your address details at our office. If you did not receive a letter please

contact the school on 52481400.

For further help or comments please contact Stephen Bath at the school.

SECONDARY SCHOOL NURSE NEWS

Move more…Sit Less! Stand up for yourself:

Even if you are very physically active, you will still benefit from limiting the amount of time that you spend sitting or lying down

(except when sleeping) in as many ways as possible.

You’re right – there are some activities, like reading and doing school work, that may need to be done while you are sitting.

The key is to find a healthy balance and limit time spent in front of a screen for entertainment.

Does your time mean screen time?

Time spent using electronic media (such as television, seated electronic games, portable electronic devices or computers) for

entertainment, is referred to as screen time.

While screen time activities may be popular, they usually involve either sitting or lying down for long periods.

Minimise the time you spend being sedentary every day:

Limiting your use of electronic media for entertainment to less than 2 hours per day; and

Breaking up long periods of sitting whenever possible

Ideas include:

I could turn off the TV during the day and head outside

I could make my bedroom a computer and TV free zone

I could set an alarm on my computer to remind me to stand up often

Get Real! Why not try meeting up with friends in person instead of online? What will you do?

For more information go to: www.health.gov.au

Go sugary drink free! Cancer Council, National Heart Foundation, Diabetes Australia and the Australian Dental Association recommend children and

adults reduce their intake of sugar sweetened beverages and drink water or reduced fat milk instead.

This recommendation is supported by the Australian Dietary Guidelines which state that sugary drinks increase the risk of

overweight and obesity in children and adults and should be consumed on a limited basis.

Year 7 Beach Day On Friday, 13th March our Year 7 students took the bus

to Ocean Grove beach for a Beach Day. The day was

designed for the kids to have fun, get to know each other

a little better and try something new. The activities on

offer were : Surfing, Beach Games (Survivor style) and a

Rock Pool walk.

Chilly conditions definitely didn’t shake the spirits of the

students who, after some encouragement, were dressed

in wet suits and given some instructions by Mr

Beckworth on the basics of surfing. Out into the surf

they went, trying to stand on the board, some were

successful in catching waves.

The second group, lead by Mr Unmack undertook some

beach games which involved tennis ball catapult, treasure

hunt for letters to create an unknown word and stilts

races to name a few.

All students had a great time, with the can of drink and

sausage sizzle being a big hit!

Thanks to Ms Goldsmith, Ms Ercoli, Mr Unmack and Mr Beckworth for their help on the day. Mr Rowan Klingberg

Statements from Year 7 students:

“My favourite activity was just hanging with friends.” “I loved the beach activities (finding the letters), burnt sausages, but they

taste pretty good. Surfing was the bomb.”

“I think the waves were nice to ride.”

“Friday was fun!! My favourite thing was surfing. It was great fun!”

“I enjoyed the beach games with Mr Unmack and the surfing.” “One of the problems: I had a hard time to find the animals in the rock

pools.” “Most amazing day! I had so much fun trying to surf and the food was

yum as.”

“I loved surfing so much (Mr Beckworth).” “Being able to do things like surfing and hanging out with friends was

awesome.”

“The funniest part was when everyone was surfing, my friends and I were playing in the waves.”

“The water was so warm. I had a great day.”

“The beach day was really fun because we got to learn to surf but the bad thing was the food was burnt.”

“I think it was a great experience for people to learn how to surf, thanks to Mr Beckworth for teaching us.

“My favourite part was surfing. I enjoyed it so much I am now in ownership of a wetsuit and surfboard.”

COLLEGE CAPTAINS CONSIDER THEIR LEGACY

Last Wednesday, 12th March the College Captains caught

the 7.07am train from South Geelong for the 1,000 + Grip

Leadership School Captains day at the Melbourne

Convention Centre (opposite Crown). Our Captains were

still feeling affects of the ‘Athletics Sports Day’, the day

before but were in good spirits and represented us

intelligently and sensibly. The main reason for attending

was to develop leadership skills and further their plans,

their legacy, as College Captains.

They took part in workshops on various aspects of

leadership – plan, act and stay strong. Team approach was

a central theme all day – common goals, respect for all,

everyone contributes and is accountable - with a true belief

that you can make a difference to better your community. Other sessions included how to maximise your events and

communication, leading in different situations, leadership style, House Captains’ resource kit and linking up with other school

leaders. You can go to see some of the events at www.gripsocial.com.au

One of the first acts to come from the conference is a fortnightly lunchtime meeting to discuss goals and actions. Bailee has

already addressed the Year 7 and 8 about expectations of the Senior School and what they need to do in Years 7 and 8. Well

done Bailee. Good luck to our Captains in their endeavours for the school and establishing a school legacy – to show

wisdom in your choices.

AVALON AIRSHOW CAREERS EXPO

Recently Mr Currie took some Newcomb Year 10

students to the Avalon Airshow for a Careers Expo. This

is a bi-annual event and involves almost a thousand

students from Victorian schools.

Young speakers from various sectors in the aerospace,

aviation and defence industries spoke about their jobs and

how they got there. The first speaker was an engineer

who assesses planes for airworthiness and locates

structural problems, another was a flight controller who

directs air traffic around airports and another was a top

gun pilot in the Airforce. He usually flies the F18s but was

last year selected to go the USA to learn how to fly the

new F22s that Australia has ordered.

After the expo, students were free to peruse the displays

and watch the aeroplane and helicopter acrobatics.

REACH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM On Thursday, 12th March, 18 of our Year 11 students were invited to be a part of the REACH Leadership program. The

students were involved in some fun activities, thought provoking discussions, and began to break down what a leader really

is. This was the first of four workshops which will be held over the next few months.

The students were encouraged to reconsider their thoughts about what makes an authentic leader, and to look at their

own unique leadership potential. The group will work together by challenging their ideas about what makes a leader, and by

practising skills and traits that will help them demonstrate their potential leadership skills in their school, home, and

community.
