FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our second newsletter of 2019. It is only a week since students have commenced and it is most pleasing to see the student cohort settling into their work programs so readily. The Year 7 students should be

proud of their endeavours to experience new things. Learning should be challenging and does not always feel comfortable. I commend our new families on the support they have offered their young people to have the courage to face new learnings in a new school environment so effectively.

Retreats & CampsLast week our Year 12 students experienced three days at Norval, where they reflected on their lives, their families and had opportunities to set personal goals and bond as a group. With assistance from the Sacred Heart Ministry Team our students were confronted with numerous personal challenges but approached each with enthusiasm and openness. Many thanks to staff members - Ebony Hobbs, Annie Brack, Kingsley Dalgliesh, Les Butler and Fr Peter.

As our 2019 Year 12 class commence their formal studies this year, it is always interesting to see the range of careers our graduates undertake when they leave St Brigid’s. Following is a list of tertiary courses our Year 12 2018 students are pursuing in 2019:Accounting and Finance, Forensic Science, Nutrition Science, Nursing, Psychological Science, Health/Physical Education, Science, Arts/Commerce, Animation, Applied Science/Occupational Therapy Practice, Veterinary Science, Business Management, Engineering – Mechanical, Bio-medical Science, Nursing, Engineering/Science, Arts, Psychology, Education, Social Work, Community and Health Services, Environmental/ Conservation Science and Film and Television Production. In looking at the above list, our graduates will be undertaking their tertiary studies at the following institutions: Latrobe University, Deakin University, Federation University, Monash University, Australian Catholic University, JMC Academy, University of Melbourne and Victoria University.

Elevate EducationElevate Education is Australia’s largest study skills provider. Since 2001, Elevate has been transforming the way study skills programs are run across Australia. Drawing upon over 15 years of research into the habits of the country’s top students, Elevate’s high impact seminars & workshops help students improve their study techniques, increase motivation, build confidence, and lift exam performance. Our Year 10 students will participate in a session which will focus on:“Student Elevation” which will assist our students to remain focussed during the year. Our Year 11 students will participate in sessions which will focus on:“Study Sensei” which will break down the study techniques of top students and provide students with a road-map for what work they need to be doing across the year and how to do it. “Time Management” which will address the common question: “Once I know what to do, how do I find the time to do it?” Our Year 12 students will participate in sessions which will focus on: “Memory Mnemonics” which will highlight strategies and techniques that help students with their memorisation and recall of information. “Ace your Exams Year 12” where critical exam skills will be outlined. It is hoped that these sessions will enable our Senior students to excel in all aspects of their school life. I thank Lesley Lannen for this initiative for our students.

Swimming Sports CarnivalNext Thursday, we wish all Houses well and encourage parents to join us on the day in supporting the teams. The sports are an excellent opportunity for students to live life to the full. Not everyone is a talented swimmer but there are a diverse range of activities to encourage student participation. It is not uncommon for students to put pressure on parents and guardians not to attend school on these days but it is imperative that parents stand firm and point out that community events are an

important opportunity to learn and to build both team and school spirit.

Memorial ServiceOn Tuesday our Year 9 students will attend a commemoration of the anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. The service was conducted by World War II veterans and their stories detailed the hardship and risks that the local militia experienced. As Australians, we can sometimes take for granted the peace and freedom we experience. We should be grateful for our country and offer our thanks to the men and women who helped shape Australia through their defence of the country.

Parent Access Module (PAM)To support all our students as learners, I encourage families to go to the Parent Access Module (PAM). PAM can be found on the front page of our College website. Within PAM you can see the student timetable, but more importantly the Learning Areas tab on the left which brings up your child’s subjects where you can click on these to see when their assessments are due. This is very significant as you are able to help your child be proactive in their submission of work. It also allows the parent to see the feedback provided by the teachers and look for areas of improvement in the future. Try and build a regular look at PAM into your weekly schedule.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL continued...

Student AbsenceParents are asked to advise the Front Office (53823545) Option 1 by 8.40am if their child will be absent from school that day. Messages may also be left on the school answering machine. Should a student not be present at homeroom or Period 1 and has not completed a late pass, then a text message will be sent to parents’ mobiles seeking clarification of the absence.

Year 7 Family Welcome EveningMany thanks to all our Year 7 parents who were able to attend our welcoming Dinner on at the Coughlin Park Community Centre. The evening was a wonderful opportunity for parents to meet the staff of St Brigid’s and also make new acquaintances with each other. Many thanks to Cathy van Dyk and the Student Wellbeing team for the organisation of this very successful evening.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College,

Peter GutteridgePrincipal

You have just come back to school and if you are reading this, chances are that you are thinking about exploring your career and pathway options. It’s never too early to start thinking about career ideas, researching your options, developing a career action plan, or simply having a discussion with your Career Adviser. If you are in Year 12, it is essential that you discuss your options with the key people in your life as soon as possible. Have no idea what you would like to do when you leave school? No stress! Don’t delay seeing your Career Adviser- now is the perfect time. Not sure what to say? Don’t worry- it’s their job to guide you and open up possibilities you may not have considered before. As a starting point, if you are interested in studying at university or TAFE in the future, please find to the right links to Facebook and YouTube accounts of several Victorian institutions. It is important to know that Swinburne University, RMIT, Victoria University, and Federation University have both university and TAFE divisions and that many TAFE institutes offer university degrees! If you are interested in pursuing a traineeship or apprenticeship pathway, it is important that you gain as much industry experience as possible. You can undertake work experience once you turn 15 years old. Seeing your Career Adviser early in the year is important to ensure you can get organised early and to be able to start making links with local employers. It is important to read the Weekly Career News each week to ensure that you keep up to date with upcoming career events. Happy reading!
