From the Principal’s Desk

Andrew Evetts, Principal

Dear Parents,

We are fast approaching the end of Term 3. It is the time of the year when we all start to wonder where the year has gone! I can’t believe that some stores are already selling Christmas decorations. It seems to happen earlier every year!

The college is well into planning for 2013. Enrolment forms were sent to parents at the beginning of this term to identify what the intentions of families were for continuing enrolment in BCC next year. Thank you for the fantastic response we have had. If you haven’t yet responded I would encourage you to do so as soon as possible to ensure your child’s place.

While I realise with some uncertainty about the economy, it may be a bit early for some families to know, however the information really helps us to plan in advance. Thanks for the great response.

Early indications are that the College will experience some growth next year. Enrolments for prep are already high for next year. The enrolments for Pre- Prep are also gaining momentum. If you know anyone who is thinking about enrolling in either of these year levels please give them a nudge to fill out and submit an enrolment form as soon as possible. There is also room for growth in other grades throughout the school.

Yours in Christ

2012 BCC Walk-a-Thon Our College is conducting a major fundraiser project this term with a walk-a-thon being held on Thursday 20th September. Your child has been given a sponsorship form and we would like you to encourage your children to get sponsors from family, relatives and friends from now till then. The money raised will benefit your children through various projects conducted by the College. Your children will benefit by receiving a voucher for 20% of the money they have raised. The highest boy and girl fundraiser in the College will receive a $40.00 gift voucher, the highest fundraiser in the class an extra 5% and the best class on average a $50.00 voucher. These vouchers can be spent at Overflow. All the children from will be walking to Plantation Park while under the supervision of their class teacher and will cross Norham Road under police supervision. Children should bring a water bottle with them to ensure that they stay hydrated during the walk. You are most welcome to come and join us and enjoy the walk with your children and participate in a sausage sizzle at the park. All children will leave the school at 12.30pm and participate in some fun activities when there. Children’s school bags will be transported to the Park by the school bus and parents may pick up their children at any time from 2.30pm onwards. Any children catching a school bus will be transported back to school at

2.30pm. If you would like another sponsorship form please call into the

office or phone Fiona and ask for a form to be put in your child’s

homework folder.

What’s Been Happening In Prep This Term?

Where do I start? This term has been a really long term for our youngest students and also a

very busy one. Our thematic unit for the term has been ‘Animals’. This included learning

about ‘Prehistoric Animals – Dinosaurs’, ‘Farm Animals’, ‘Jungle Animals’ and ‘Bears’. This was

an integrated unit which allowed me to focus on the writing genre’ – Information Reports.

We have learned a great many interesting facts about the life cycles, diets, habitats and

physical features of these groups of animals. Even some things we didn’t need to know. We

have also looked very closely at the purpose of Information Text types and their uses.

Children concluded the unit by planning and writing an information report on an animal of

their choice. As a part of the Australian Curriculum requirements Preppies have also present-

ed a short oral presentation – An Information Report on their favourite animal. The preppies

did an amazing job with this and are certainly becoming confident little speakers.

We have been flying along in iMaths Numeracy. Our fa-

vourite concept this term has been early addition.

Students have also enjoyed representing numbers; focus on

numbers 11-20. We looked closely at different types of

transport we see on the roads and their characteristics and

uses. For the technology component we designed a vehi-

cle and described its characteristics and uses.

Page 5: Newsletter 13.9

Preppies really enjoyed planting the Prep

garden with Mr and Mrs Mottin. Check out

our thriving flowers. We often head over for

a peaceful start to water the garden and

remove any weeds (and sometimes plants

that may look like weeds). Ooops! Best

put that one back then. It’s looking great!

Of course we had out Bear Hunt and The Teddy Bear’s Picnic. A great day was had by all

and a marvellous spread of food provided by the Mums and Dads. Thank you.

Children have really come along academically with >80% of our Preppies reading above a

Level 6!!! Amazing progress! The Preps now know, on average, 60+ sight words and are writ-

ing recounts and information reports beautifully. It has been a great privilege to teach the

children about the fruits of the spirit this term and see them put this into practice in their rela-

tionships with other students and staff. Feel free to drop into the Prep room to have a peek

at our progress.

Galations 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,

peace, long suffering, kindness,

goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,

self-control.

Matthew 12:33

Either make the tree good and it’s

fruit good, or else make the tree bad

and it’s fruit bad; for a tree is known

by its fruit.

Until next time…

Warm Regards

Mrs Lovelady Prep Teacher

Other stand out events this term for the Preppies has been the BCC Athletics Carnival and the Combined small schools Athletics Day . The Preps participated to the best of their abilities with outstanding sportsmanship and excellent behaviour.

Star Gazing Night with Rob Black

from NQ Astronomy

Tuesday 18th September 2012

6.30pm to 9pm

Burdekin Christian College Oval

Everyone welcome!! We are very fortunate to have Rob Black, from NQ Astronomy visiting the College on Tuesday 18th September to help us view the wonders of the night sky through powerful telescopes. All students, parents, friends and relatives are invited to the star gazing night. Rob is providing his services and equipment for free however we are asking for a gold coin donation to assist with the continued operation of NQ Astronomy. Rob advises the section now boasts 10 telescopes - ranging from a dedicated Hydrogen Alpha Solar scope to a 13" Dobsonian. It will start at 6.30pm and finish around 9pm and will be held on the College oval. It is on the last Tuesday of Term 3. There will be a sausage sizzle and softdrinks for sale on the night. Rob will do a quick 15 - 20 minute introduction to the night using a Green Laser Pointer (which is registered with CASA as per Government Regulations). Red light torches only please - a few layers of red cellophane over the lens of a low power torch is adequate. No DOLPHIN style torches please as they're too powerful and can cause hassles with night vision. Rob will explain all this to the students at his visit to the College to provide the students with an astronomy and solar lesson.

Hi, my name is Cheryl Taylor and I work as a relief Educator at the Early Learning Centre.

My husband and I came to the Burdekin about 6 years ago whilst caravanning. We liked the area and the people so much that we stayed.

We have two sons who are married and live in New South Wales.

In March this year we became grandparents for the first time. So now we have a beautiful granddaughter named Lucy to spoil.

I have worked at ELC for 14 months, and at the moment I am busy studying for a Diploma in Children's Services.

I enjoy working with the staff and children at the centre. When I'm not working or studying I like to do quilting for relaxation.

Meet the Hello fellow newsletter readers, I am Ronda Downs the Prep Teacher Aide at our college. I was

born in Ayr and in fact I still live at the same house that I grew up in. (My parents moved out.) I

have been married to John for twenty-five years and we have three sons. James my big boy is

an apprentice fitter and turner at Pioneer Mill. Rowan my middle man is in year ten at Ayr High

School and Daniel my baby is in year seven at East Ayr State School.

I love working with children at the Christian College and at a Combined Churches Kids Club and

at Youth Group. It seems like I can’t get enough of them but I make sure I have some time for

my own children as well.

I enjoy playing with puppets and singing. In the holidays I like spending time with friends and

family, going down the creek, occasionally scrapbooking and just generally shopping.

ELC This fortnight we have played with plastic animals in the sandpit. The children were very imaginative—putting them in the back of the trucks and taking them to the zoo. We covered the outside table with paper and painted it with paint . The children then made handprints, blobbed paint on the paper then made swishing patterns on the paper. They used their fingertips and nails to draw on the paper. During outside play some of us were in a Marching Band, marching around the playground with our drums. We learnt about the letter ‘s’ and ‘a’. We went for a walk and picked some flowers, and then we drew a picture of the flowers. We coloured in some flower shapes and they are displayed in our room. It is spring!!!! Library Borrowing will start again after the holidays. Please bring all library books back by next week please as we need to return them read for Term 4. Vacancies We currently have vacancies available. Please phone us or call in for more information on days and times available.

Please…. Check your child’s hair for head lice and treat if necessary Name items sent to the ELC Provide us with your CRN numbers. Whether you receive a rebate or not, we still need to send Centrelink your child’s attendance information to ensure your tax rebate is processed correctly each year. Everyone is entitled to a 50% rebate for child care fees paid throughout the year regardless of your income. See Fiona in the College office for more info.

Toddlers

We have had a good time over the last couple of weeks. Some of us had lots of fun playing in the water puddles on the grass. We jumped in the water puddles turning it into a mud puddle. We got really muddy and en-joyed ourselves. We had made spiders to go with the nursery rhyme “Incy Wincy Spider” and they are hanging down from the netting near the rhyme that is on the wall. Please have a look.

We have been doing easel painting outside and even painting ourselves. We have been playing in the water trough with bubbles and getting all wet even though we have our paint shirts on. The children have been choosing the stories they would like to be read to

them at group time. They even like sitting down and reading the story in their own words to the rest of the group. This can be very interesting. We have been singing and doing the actions to “Incy Wincy Spider”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Open Shut Them”. The children are getting really good at these. Ask you children to sing them to you. Please remember to clearly name all your child’s belongings so that we can return them if they are left at the Centre.
