Term 1, Week 8 – 20th March, 2014

Doing our best at the Athletics Carnival

New classes Due to our increasing school numbers students will have been placed in their new classes today. We do hope that the transition is smooth for all and we are confident that student placement has been well considered.

Albury Gold Cup A timely reminder - once again schools will be given a half day public holiday for the Albury Gold Cup which will be held FRIDAY 28th March. PLEASE NOTE that bus companies are also entitled to the half day public holiday and as such earlier picks up will not be available. I am asking that you make alternative arrangements to pick children up at 12pm next Friday.

P&C AGM Last week the P&C held its 2014 AGM. During this meeting the 2014 Executive was voted in. Our P&C Executive for 2014 will be: President: Shanthan Pathmanathan Treasurer: Chris Horn Secretary: Jenny Squire Canteen Supervisor: Alison Mildenhall Clothing Pool Co-ordinator: Sharon McNair Fundraising Co-ordinator: Belinda Horn

I would like to make special mention of, and say, thank you to our amazing P & C who continue to support our school and students. This group of dedicated people are vital to the successful running of our school. I would ask all our parents to consider joining us in the P & C for 2014.

Assistance Required Overall the standard of the uniform at Albury West is very good. One area we need assistance with, is jumpers. Either the grey or gold jumper needs to be worn. Please note that hoodies are not part of school uniform and as such should not be worn to school. Please check uniform as students leave home. A note from parents when students are out of uniform is acceptable for short periods of time. Anyone who requires assistance with uniforms can contact the front office.

Our uniform fulfils many important roles. It allows and encourages equity as all students look alike. The uniform also helps identify Albury West students, which is important when in a large group. Perhaps most importantly, wearing the full uniform is a sign of respect for the school which is often how the school is judged by the community.

Early Pick Up If for some reason you need to pick up your child before the end of the school day, your child must be signed out from the front office beforehand. This includes taking your child home after an assembly. No child will be able to leave the school grounds without a white slip. We appreciate your support in ensuring our students are at school on time and safe.

Special Toys Whilst children enjoy bringing their special toys into school to share with their friends, recently there have been a couple of instances where these toys have been damaged or have been lost. Obviously this can be upsetting for the child, and the parents and teachers, so please if it is a really special toy, the best spot for it is at home.

Crossing A very special reminder to our parents and students that our school crossing is manned in the morning and the afternoon by an employee of the RMS to keep our children safe when they are crossing the road before and after school.

Please make sure that everyone crosses the road at the right spot and that you are never in so big a hurry either driving past the crossing or walking your children to the crossing that someone is injured. We have had a few near misses recently and it’s time for everyone to be vigilant so that our children are safe.

Hockey Gala Day Congratulations to our hockey teams who proudly represented our school at the Hockey Gala Day last week. Our teams had a terrific day and certainly learnt a great many skills in relation to hockey. Special congratulations to Nivetha, Rosanna, Abby, Justine, Harry, Ben, Oscar, Jarrod and Jack who were selected to attend the hockey trials later on this month. We wish them all the best.

A special thank you to the many parents who assisted with transport on the day – without your help and support we are unable to participate in these events. Thank you also to Mr Beattie who trained and supervised the teams.

Harmony Day Tomorrow students at Albury West Public School will be celebrating Harmony Day. Students will be involved in a range of culturally diverse activities including games and art activities. Students can wear brightly coloured clothes on the day if they wish.

Grandfriends Day A reminder that our Grandfriends Day is being held on the 28th March. Grandfriends are invited into classrooms at 10.15am to assist students with their learning in literacy and numeracy. A special morning tea is being provided by our hard working P&C and K/1B have a special assembly planned

How Do I Get My Kids to School on Time??? Mornings present manic moments in many families. It seems there’s always one child who will drag the chain, and slow everyone else down. Try these ideas to quicken your kids up: ■ Consider making bedtime earlier if kids are totally tired in the mornings ■ Place morning routine on a picture chart and refer to it often. ■ Remove all distractions such as television, electronic games and other devices until they are dressed and ready for school. ■ Be prepared to take kids to school or preschool in various stages of undress (let them get dressed in the car)
