With several years of drought and a winter that produced an abundance of grasses, the current hot dry conditions have made the danger more acute. To increase park users awareness of fire danger, the City of Chico Parks Division erected a “Fire Danger” sign at the entrance to Upper and Middle Park. The sign will be updated on a regular basis to indicate current fire danger. Wind, humidity, moisture content of live and dead fuels and forecast for dry lighting are indicators of fire danger levels. The sign’s intent is to keep the public aware of fire danger and practice safe behavior when visiting the park. Staff will update the sign on a weekly basis unless conditions change dramatically. Citizens interested in the most current fire weather should consult the National Weather Service Fire Weather page http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/firewx/?wfo=sto With the current dry conditions, the City’s Park Rangers urge park visitors to use extra caution when enjoying Bidwell Park and other natural areas. A few reminders and fire prevention tips include: No smoking in parks or greenways. Park in designated areas only; avoid parking in dry grass or on road shoulders. Campfires are prohibited. Fireworks are prohibited in the City of Chico. BBQs are allowed in designated areas of Bidwell Park. Please refrain from the use of BBQs in windy conditions and make sure coals are completely extinguished. Park Rangers are urging park visitors to be vigilant. If you observe irresponsible behavior or notice smoke, make note of the area and call 911.
