Distinctive personality, with dynamic,robust design

Thanks to its long bonnet, the robust stance of itsrear flanks and its fluid side lines, New Twingoboasts a modern, pleasing design. Its long wheel-base (2,367mm) and extremely short front and rearoverhang dimensions exude an attractive blend ofelegance and robustness, while its 14-inch wheels(or 15-inch wheels according to version) ensure thatit sits squarely on the road.

The clear break between the rear edge of the bonnetand the windscreen accentuates New Twingo’s dis-tinctive lines. Its laser-brazed roof — a productioninnovation — contributes to the seamless fluidity ofits lines.

At the front, the bright headlamp mask, ‘soft nose’,grille-less bumper and central bonnet crease giveNew Twingo the cheery allure of an affable city car. This prevailing good-natured feel is echoed by theair intake, which is set in the lower part of thebumper and flanked by the foglamps.

The Dynamique and GT versions place the emphasison New Twingo's dynamic appeal. The design is raci-er and both versions come with a specific frontbumper, while the foglamps are picked out by asatin grey surround. These two variants of NewTwingo feature a more assertive demeanour for a carin this segment, an impression reinforced by thegloss black headlamp masks and satin grey exteriormirror housings.

According to version, the rear bumper houses rearparking proximity sensors and includes protectivebeading. The GT version of New Twingo is distin-guishable by its aluminium-finish rear spoiler andchrome exhaust tailpipe.

New Twingo – compact and agile

City driving calls for compactness and agility. NewTwingo measures 3,600mm long by 1,654mm mak-ing it ideal for an urban environment. The extra170mm in length that sets it apart from its prede-cessor have been employed to provide additional

safety performance and cabin space without detract-ing from the car’s main objective, which is to remaineasy to control in all circumstances, with a smallturning-circle diameter (between kerbs) of 9,85m(depending on version and wheel size).

Reassuring roadholding

New Twingo is an easy-to-drive car with highly reas-suring response. Design priorities for vehicle han-dling were on safety, poise and comfort. The chassisis superbly manoeuvrable in town yet reassuring forlong journeys on the open road.

MacPherson-type front suspension featureshydraulic dampers, coil springs and an anti-roll bar,the diameter of which is 25mm on models poweredby the 1.2 60hp engine and 26mm on all other ver-sions. The suspension tuning has been optimized foreven better roadholding and comfort, while thechassis makes a significant contribution to NewTwingo's versatility and dynamism.

The programmed deflection H-beam rear suspensionis compact and lightweight. For travelling comfortand the effective suppression of vibrations, it comeswith vertically-mounted dampers and variable-ratecoil springs with rubber bushes at each end to min-imize transmission of vibration to the body shell. The diameter of the rear anti-roll bar is 22.5mm,except for models powered by the 1.2 60hp engine(19.3mm).

New Twingo’s suspension systems bringcomfort, safety and responsiveness.

Vigorous, environment-consciousengines

From initial release, New Twingo comes with a broadchoice of engines, including a high-performancepetrol unit and a diesel engine There are three petrolengines: 1.2 60hp (43kW), 1.2 16V 75hp (56kW),and the brand new TCE 100hp (74kW), all of whichincorporate the On Board Diagnostic system for last-ing efficiency of the emission control equipment.New Twingo can also be ordered with the 1.5 dCi65hp (47kW) diesel engine, an important additionsince one in five A-segment cars sold in Europe arediesel-powered.

All four engines are economical to run and respect-ful of the environment. All New Twingo versions, even the most powerful, emit under 140g of CO2 perkm, with the diesel version emitting just 113g. AllNew Twingo engines comply with Euro4 emissionstandards.

The flexible mountings that link the suspension tothe body play a key role in striking the ideal balancebetween the car’s vibration-suppression perform-ance (for comfort) and stiffness (roadholding). OnNew Twingo, special attention has been paid tothese mountings, which combine a rubber honey-comb construction for effective vibration filteringplus a special rigid shoulder for enhanced roadhold-ing. New Twingo comes with 14” tyres in two widths(165 and 175mm), or with 15” tyres 185mm wideon Initiale and GT versions.

More assertive responsefor GT version

Special attention has gone into engineering of theGT version’s chassis, with a view to providing bothoutstanding dynamic performance and a highdegree of comfort. The suspension arms areequipped with stiffer bushes for extra cornering sta-bility, while the upper strut bushes ensure enhancedsteering performance and precision. For truer bodysupport, the front shock absorbers feature pressur-ization technology. New Twingo GT also comes withbespoke power-steering settings for extra dynamismand driving pleasure.

1.2 8V 60hp (43kW) The acclaimed D7F 8-valve 1.2 petrol engine thatpreviously powered Twingo boasts maximum powerof 60hp (43kW) at 5,250rpm and maximum torqueof 93Nm (9.5mkg) at 2,500rpm. Its robustnessmeets the demand of customers looking for a vehi-cle that is inexpensive to run and maintain. On NewTwingo, settings have been optimized to offer extratorque and lower fuel consumption. Long staging ofthe JB1 five-speed gearbox further improves fueleconomy, with consumption of 5.6l per 100km(132g/km of CO2).

1.2 16V 75hp (56kW)The 1,149cc 1.2 16V (D4F) engine delivers 75hp(56kW) at 5,500rpm and torque of 107Nm (11mkg)at 4,250rpm. Particularly responsive at low revs, itsidling speed of just 650rpm contributes to lowerfuel consumption. New Twingo is coupled witheither the JB1 five-speed manual gearbox or theJH1 automated manual transmission. The Quickshift 5 automated manual transmission isbased on a manual gearbox fitted with an electro-hydraulic actuator. It has two modes: automatic(with no driver action required) or manual (withflickshift control). As well as providing automatedgearshift capabilities at low additional cost, theQuickshift system also improves fuel economy byaround 3%. With this engine, New Twingo emits nomore than 135g of CO2 per km, with consumptionat 5.6l per 100km with the Quickshift transmissionand 5.7l per 100km with the manual gearbox.

TCE 100hp (74kW) New Twingo joins Clio III and Modus as the latestrecipient of the new TCE 100hp (turbo control effi-ciency) petrol engine, one of the GT version’s exclu-sive features. In addition to its punchy performance,it combines the fuel consumption of a 1.2-litermotor with the power of a 1.4-liter powerplant andthe torque of a 1.6-liter engine. The TCE 100hp isbased on the 1.2 16V 75hp block (with which itshares 70% of its parts) and is equipped with a lowinertia turbo that minimizes lag thanks its smalldiameter turbine and compressor.

Maximum power is 100hp (74kW) at 5,500rpm,while maximum torque (145Nm) is available at3,000rpm. The combination of its small size andlow inertia turbo ensures feisty performance fromlow revs, while maximum torque is available fromvery low down and across a particularly broad revband. The turbo comes with an 'overpower' functionthat enables drivers to benefit from a temporarypower and torque increase of 5hp and 6Nm respec-tively in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears at engine speeds ofover 4,500rpm. Advanced technology and containedsize ensure the lowest combined-cycle fuel con-sumption for a 100hp petrol engine (5.9l per100km and 140g of CO2 per km), as well as maxi-mum driver appeal. With a standstill to 100km/htime of just 9.8 seconds, the TCE 100hp deliversbest-in-class performance.

Top-end safety

New Twingo makes no compromises on safety, andintroduces qualities well superior to its predecessor.

New Twingo’s lines and proportions suggest robust-ness, while the inherent qualities of the chassis andsuspension ensure a remarkably high level of safetyfor this vehicle segment. Renault engineers havepaid special attention to providing reassuring road-holding without detracting from agile yet comfort-able handling. Meticulous research was conductedinto tyre stiffness, to make the most of New Twingo’ssafe and highly effective performance.

New Twingo’s enhanced braking performance stemsfrom its 259mm-diameter discs (plain or ventedaccording to engine and trim level), which are cou-pled with eight-inch diameter drums at the rear onall versions. New Twingo comes as standard withContinental MK70 ABS with electronic braking dis-tribution and emergency brake assist. Under sus-tained braking, the warning lamps switch on auto-matically. Renault is one of very few carmakers tooffer these systems on a small city car. TheElectronic Stability Programme (ESP) is currentlyunder development and will become available in themonths following initial launch.

For optimum manoeuvrability in town coupled withprecise steering at higher speeds, New Twingo isavailable with electrical power steering, plus aheight-adjustable steering wheel. These featuresensure reassuring driving sensations at cruisingspeed on the open road.

Roomy, practicaland people-oriented

People-oriented interior

New Twingo builds on its predecessor’s prime virtuesof simplicity and ergonomics, with an intuitive interiorappreciated by all occupants for its qualities of com-fort, convenience and practicality. The dashboard fea-tures materials of superior perceived quality, and isavailable in a choice of two colours — light grey ordark carbon —, with a wealth of stowage cubbies.

The dashboard instrumentation comprises an LCDspeedometer and a display for the 18 warning lightslocated in the driver's direct line of sight. Entry-levelfinishes include a handy cubby to hold a mobile phoneand loose change. The Dynamique and GT versions areequipped with a rev-counter (optional on other ver-sions according to country), which is mounted on thesteering column, while a digital radio display takes theplace of the cubby.

Spacious and modular

New Twingo’s very short overhangs free up spacethat is used to great effect in producing an aston-ishingly roomy interior, exceptional for a car in thiscategory. This impression is further emphasized byvast glazed surface, which lends brightness as well

as volume. In addition, New Twingo is available witha generously sized electric panoramic sunroof(666mm long by 497mm wide at the front and405mm wide at the rear). The sunroof has an anti-pinch function and rotary one-touch control.

An all-new design simplifies access to the rearseats. The practically positioned lever situated onthe upper part of the front seatbacks (according toversion) enables the seat to be tipped forward withease. On the driver’s side, the mechanism isdesigned to return the seat to its initial positionwhen the seatback is raised again. To minimize theneed to bend the body, and to facilitate head clear-ance when climbing onboard, the aperture itself hasbeen enlarged, which is also of benefit to rear pas-sengers when they swing out their feet.

When the front passenger seatback is tipped forward(according to versions), the driver and/or rear pas-sengers can use it to hold objects securely and with-in easy reach thanks to a netted map pocket. Thisfeature also facilitates access for rear passengers, aswell as the installation of a child seat in the rear.

New Twingo’s passenger compartment is designedfor passengers of all sizes, with highly generous roofclearance. Front roof height is 897mm, and rearroof height 877mm with independent seats fully for-ward or 851mm with independent seats fully back. These figures are respectively 35mm, 42mm and27mm larger than on the first-generation Twingo.

The rear-seat knee radius is also 23mm larger. At amaximum of 230mm, rear-seat leg room is compa-rable with that on vehicles in the next segment up.

Advanced modularity

New Twingo's versatility enables it to meet all types ofneeds. According to version, it features either a fixedrear bench seat or two independent sliding rear seats. With the seatback in the normal position, the under-

parcel shelf boot volume of versions equipped with afixed rear bench seat is a generous, class-leading 230l(VDA). With the rear bench seat folded down, this fig-ure increases to 951l (VDA). The rear seats of versionsequipped with four independent seats can slide forwardand backward over a distance of 220mm, with a ratch-et stop every 10mm. The seatback can be reclined toone of five positions, from 25 to 35 degrees. Accordingto layout, the boot volume of these versions extendsfrom 165l (VDA) —with rear seats in their rearmostposition, a layout that favours rear passenger comfort—to 285l (VDA) —with rear seats in their foremost posi-tion to favour boot space. With the independent rearseats tipped forward to form an 'estate car' layout, a full959l (VDA) of boot space is available. A pushchair canbe carried in the boot whatever the position of the rearseats, which can also be folded forward to form a table. For even greater modularity, the front passenger seat-back can also be tipped forward to permit loads of upto 2,015mm in length to be carried, a segment best.

Accent on travelling comfortNew Twingo is very much about passenger comfort. The driving environment has been carefully thoughtthrough to ensure first class ergonomics, starting withthe steering wheel — now height-adjustable — whichis tipped an extra 5 degrees towards the driver com-pared with Twingo. The pedal assembly comes with afootrest, while the gearlever has also been reposi-tioned to make sure it falls perfectly to hand. Thedensity of the foam employed for the seats has beenselected to hold passengers even more firmly, butcomfortably, in place. The height-adjustable driver’sseat enables drivers to choose a position suited totheir particular physique. Tall occupants also benefitfrom the new car's generous headroom, which makesgetting in and out of the car easier than ever.

New Twingo’s modular cabin has 11 well-thought-outstowage spaces, most of which are within easy reachof the driver. In addition to the lidded 13-liter pas-senger-side glovebox, New Twingo comes with 2.2-liter door bins, a 1.7-liter stowage space on the dash-board cowling in front of the driver, stowage to theleft of the steering column (0.8l), two cup-holdersand stowage space at the foot of the centre console, plus a 3.7-liter bin underneath the driver's seat(according to version). At the rear, the netted mappocket on the front passenger seatback and space inthe rear side trim provide a further 2.5l of stowage tomake a grand total of 28.4l, that is to say an addi-tional 16l over Twingo. The door bins can each housea 1.5-liter bottle.

Full compliance with “Renault eco2”New Twingo is ecological and economical. Respect for the environment is aninherent part of New Twingo’s genetic make-up, with CO2 emissions downbelow 140g/km, 9% of recycled plastic material, and production at the NovoMesto plant, certified to ISO 14001. Regardless of the choice of engine, allNew Twingo versions bear “Renault eco2”. And New Twingo is designed withmeticulous attention to detail, for the lowest possible running costs and thelongest possible service life

“Renault eco2” for all New Twingoversions

Renault devised “Renault eco2” to provide cus-tomers with a clear indication of its cars’ environ-mental rating. To earn “Renault eco2”, a car has tomeet three auditable criteria, corresponding to offi-cial regulations (ISO 14001 certification) or objec-tively measurable characteristics (CO2 emissions oramount of recycled plastic material). All New Twingoversions, regardless of engine, bear “Renault eco2”.

Excellent CO2 balance

All New Twingos emit under 140g of CO2 per km,and the diesel version emits just 113g/km. NewTwingo thus makes a direct contribution to the “120-140” undertaking under Renault Commitment2009, which targets annual sales of a million vehi-cles emitting under 140g of CO2 per km by 2008,with a third of these emitting under 120g/km. Toachieve its low emission and fuel consumption fig-ures, New Twingo features advanced aerodynamics(CDa 0.689), 15% lower tyre drag, reduced frictionand lightweight vehicle design. Electric power steering also reduces fuel consumption, by 0.2 to0.3l per 100km, depending on the cycle.

Renault eco2 vehicles meet three envi-ronmental criteria throughout theirwhole lifecycle, from the drawingboard to the scrapyard: • Manufacture in plant certified

to ISO 14001• CO2 emissions below 140g/km• At least 5% of recycled plastic

materials

9% recycled plastic materials

New Twingo is designed to be 95% reutilizable byweight at the end of its useful life, through recyclingand energy-from-waste. To develop recyclable parts,Renault and its suppliers sought innovative solutionsand planned for end-of-life recycling from the earli-est stages in their design and quality processes.Extensive use of polypropylene improves recyclabili-ty prospects. Special part coding was stepped up, tofacilitate sorting at the breaker’s yard: all plasticparts weighing more than 100g and all elastomer(e.g. rubber) parts weighing more than 200g arecoded with material symbols, for easy end-of-lifesorting and transfer to the appropriate recyclingprocess. New Twingo also features 9% of recycledplastic materials (15kg) and 13kg of renewal-resource materials, in the form of latex, cotton, leather, card and wood.

Noise emissions from New Twingo are wellbelow the thresholds set by current stan-dards. Regulations applicable to passen-ger vehicles specify 74dB for petrol carsand 75dB for diesels. New Twingo with the1.5 dCi 65 diesel engine features specialfoams and other absorbent materialsunder the dashboard and apron to opti-mize engine-compartment acoustic insula-tion. And the acoustic response of the GTversion is consistent with action on theaccelerator pedal.

New Twingo is made at the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia.

Manufacturing plant certified to ISO 14001

New Twingo meets exacting specifications on qualityand profitability. Renault’s new little city car is madeat the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia., which has beencertified to ISO 14001 since 1999, with renewals in2002 and 2005. Certification, issued by an inde-pendent organization (the International Organizationfor Standardization) attests to the plant’s progress ini-tiative on reducing the impact of its business on thenatural environment. The Novo Mesto plant has one ofthe lowest environmental impacts of any Renaultgroup site. In ten years, water consumption per vehi-cle at the plant has been halved and energy consump-tion reduced by 40%.

Lower running costs and 12-yearanti-corrosion warranty

New Twingo simplifies the life of its owners thanks toits long servicing intervals, with oil changes recom-mended every 30,000km for petrol-engine models(except GT version: 20,000km, with new Oil Control

System) and every 20,000km for diesel versions. Theair filter and sparkplugs need replacing every60,000km, while the timing belt should be changedevery 120,000km (petrol versions) or 160,000km(diesel). The life expectancy of the diesel fuel filter is60,000km. In day-to-day use, all engines featurelower fuel consumption To reduce repair and insur-ance costs, notably with a view to RCAR1(1) tests,New Twingo features specially designed componentsthat take into account the constraints associated withminor knocks. The use of polypropylene for the rearbeam ensures that practically all of the energy pro-duced in a low-speed impact is absorbed. New Twingocomes with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, thanksto features such as wax-injected hollow sections.
