Invention

• An invention around this time period that was helpful inside the house was

the Toilet Paper. Joseph Gayetty invented toilet paper in 1857. This

helped a lot in the house and outside the house because

before that people tore pages out of mail order catalogs.

RelationshipsWhen girls got married, they were usually around the age of 20. Some girls got married at 15 or 16.The men they married were around the age of 30 to 35.They would have from 4 to 8 children.

Divorce• Divorce was rare. • Many women died in childbirth.• The death of a spouse rather than divorce most likely ended the marriage and set the stage for remarriage.

Entertainment• For entertainment, people in this century would:• Honkey Tonks- traveling circus acts and got• $3 dollars a week.• Phonograph • They read for fun-dime

novels and magazines• Football, boxing, basketball,

and baseball.• Cage fighting with bears.• Traveling freak shows- women with beards.

State of Technology• An invention around this time period was the

magnetic telegraph, introduced by Professor Morse in 1844. It made life better by improving communication methods during this time period.

The name given to this invention Morse Code. Morse being

the inventor of the coded

method through wire in the ground. • A steam fire-engine was

tried in New York in 1841, but the invention was successful only in 1853.
