Contrary-­‐to-­‐fact situations

When an if clause expresses something that is hypothetical or contrary to fact or doubted, the verb that follows si (if) is in the past subjunctive tense. The corresponding verb in the second clause will be in the conditional tense.

Contrary-­‐to-­‐fact situations If + Imperfect Subjunctive + Conditional Si yo fuera rico, compraría una casa grande. If I were rich, I would buy a big house.

Hypothetical – Si + imp subj + conditional

As noted with the past subjunctive, como si means “as if” and is ALWAYS followed by the past subjunctive.
