NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the JSS Medical College, Mysuru (A constituent

college of Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University was inaugurated on 2nd of February

at Suttur during Suttur Jathra Mahotsava Celebrations in the year 2011, with a vision to

provide service to the community. Since then the unit has come a long way, carrying out

various activities for social cause, with great zeal.

Rabindranath Tagore said “I dreamt that life was joy; I awoke and saw, life was service; I

acted and behold, Service was Joy!” Indeed that is what we at NSS believe in. We take pride

in the various social activities we were involved in over the years that have been stated

below.

Gist of NSS

The National Service Unit (NSS) Unit of JSS Medical College, a constituent college

of Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara University (JSS University) has adopted a very unique

and Innovative Model of health service, with a motto of “Serving the Under-Served” and

mainly focuses on serving the tribal population in and around Mysuru District, Karnataka,

India.

Aim:

To provide comprehensive health care services to tribal population.

Objectives:

Situation Analysis of the Tribal communities, to identify their felt health needs

Provide Health Curative and Promotive services to Tribal Population

Strengthen the Community Participation

Capacity Building among Tribal Population

‘Involving Youth in Nation Building’, the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, has been adopted

by the NSS unit of JSS Medical College. Volunteered Medical students involve themselves in

providing comprehensive health care services to tribal population.

With this motto, aim and objectives the NSS unit is progressing step by step, covering

the tribal settlements of Mysuru district. Health camps, Health Awareness sessions and

follow up are conducted in tribal haadis. We have mobilized a team of ten Medical Doctors

with varied specialities, five technicians and two educationists who have delivered health

care services to a total of seven thousand tribal population in a span of 5 years reaching

population in Nagarhole National Park (642 km2 area), Bandipur National Park (874

km2 area) and BR Hills (540 km2 area).If required, free of cost referral health services are

provided at JSS Hospital which is a tertiary Care Centre located at Mysuru. One of the major

problems encountered was substance abuse among tribal population. And hence we have

conducted alcohol de-addiction camps at settlements in association with local NGO's which

have seen a success rate of more than 70%.

Community participation was encouraged by involving an identified tribal individual

during delivery of services. They assisted by mobilizing the tribal population to the services.

Because of the pre-existing myths about modern medicine, sensitizing the Tribal population

towards modern health care services was the main challenge which was achieved in a gradual

manner by being among them. The initial refusals were gradually converted into acceptance

by all the hard work and dedication of the NSS unit. As an NSS program officer I have been

instrumental in taking up the tribal health care initiative and ensuring that the motto is served

the services are mobilized to the most remote areas. The NSS unit has received several

letters of appreciation for the impact that it has created to the society at large and

mainly benefit provided to the tribal population settlements in an around Mysuru. The

tribal settlements are located at sparse locations amidst thick forest reserves where

accessibility is a major challenge but we have reached out to 7000 tribal population and have

also conducted research in collaboration with departmental and institutional colleagues to

understand the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome in the said

population which has been published in reputed journals and is available at

under our leadership is in the next phase extended its services to tribal settlements in and

around K Gudi and B R Hills forest area which is located at about 86 kms from Mysuru. The

most remarkable quality of mankind is Service. Yet most of us lack it. The reason is that

once, one fails to imbibe this noble quality in his younger days, he loses it forever. And it is

here National Service Scheme (NSS) plays a monumental task in bringing out the attitude of

selfless service in the younger generation still studying in colleges. It not only builds the

individual’s character, but also benefits his family, the community and the nation.

Since its inception at the JSS Medical College in the year 2011, the NSS Unit has

come a long way. The student engagement in the NSS activities is prodigious. The volunteers

participate in activities right from inception of the idea, to organising, managing and

participating in them. What is interesting to see is that the medical undergraduates in-spite of

studying one the most arduous course, somehow always make time and buzz with energy for

activities across a wide spectrum including Tribal health camps, symposia, lectures, rallies,

marathons, street plays, orphanage visits and much more.
