OBJECTORS REGISTER - ZIMBABWE REGIONThe following is a list of objectors currently resident in Zimbabwe who express a wish for their names to be included in the September 21 stand. We only heard about the stand last week. With more time many more South African objectors based here would have taken the stand. Some of us return to South Africa on a regular basis. Others are

temporary exiles who have stated they will return once conscription into the apartheid army is ended. All of us are South Africans who have left their homeland under the duress of military consription and white minority rule. All of us are conscripts who could be liable for initial service, camps or "Dad's Army" reserve duty if we returned to South Africa.1. MIKE HUMPHREY, 35, ecomomist. Completed initial service."I refuse to murder my fellow South Africans. I refuse to participate in the pillage of the rest of southern Africa. It is a total waste of South Africa's economic resources"2. DAVID VAN WYK, 33, teacher. Still liable for initial service. "I am a conscientious objector living in temporary exile. I am not willing to fight in a war upholding the rule of a racial minority. I am not prepared to fight in a war upholding the rule of an exploiting ruling class, unless the fighting requires the overthrow of this class. I therefore believe tha the war in South Africa fought by the SADF is an unjust war"3. ROB BORLAND, lecturer in Computer Science."I am not prepared to serve the apartheid's army. I have spent most of my life in South Africa and intend to return one day".4. KEVIN LAVE, 40, lawyer. Completed initial service. Liable for reserve service."The SADF hs been used, and is still being used, as an instrument of repression, both inside and outside South Africa. I cannot be part of the military machine designed to uphold the apartheid system - a system which is a crime against humanity".5. G R STRACHAN, 36, teacher. Completed initial service and camps. Liable for further camps."Having served in the SADF and witnessed at first hand the brutalities and unjustices perpetrated in defence of apartheid, in defence of an inhuman and criminal system which is universally condemned as a crime against humanity, I have resolved not to serve further in the SADF".6. ROD CARGILL, 38, conference consultant. Completed initial service."Why serve in an army of repression?".7. MISH MIDDELMAN, 31, teacher and trainer. Completed initial" I ^ d ^ n o ^ w i s h to fight for an army that defends the system of apartheid, destabilises neighbouring states and has turned

guns on the people of South Africa".8. LAWRENCE BARTLETT, journalist."The SADF is an instrument of reprssion in the service on an undemocratic system of government".9. GERRIT JOHANNES KOTZE, 32, engineer. Completed initial service."I abhor apartheid in any form and I will not fight to maintain it under any cirmustances".10. PETER WELLMAN, journalist. Still liable for reserve service. "The SADF is used to enforce apartheid. It is used to enforce other repressive and undemocratic legislation. It is used to stifle democratic protest, to try to eliminate legitimate protest, to crush entire black communities. The SADF thereby brutalises thousands of young whites involved in the above, it is the hammer of the regime's racist policies. The SADF raids into neighbouring peace-loving states endangers the entire region".11. ANDRE PROCTOR, 35, teacher. Completed initial service."I cannot serve in an army under the control of an illegitimate and oppressive regime that engages in the acts of aggression against its neighbouring states, sponsors bandit armies that have devastated huge areas of southern Africa, and violently suppresses its own citizens who desire to build a non-racial and democratic South Africa".12. ANTHONY WADDELL, 26, information systems manager. Still liable for initial service."Apartheid is unjust. The SADF defends apartheid. To service for the SADF means to serve and defend apartheid. I cannot do that".13. STEPHEN DYER, 28, musician. Still liable for initial service. "Apartheid kills, The racist South African government supports apartheid. The SADF is a tool of the South African government. The SADF believes it has a right to destabilise the whole southern African region. Who wants to fight in a "defence" force tha sows destruction wherever it treads, and after telling you how superior their fire-power is, loses battles where they count the most? (Remember Cuito Cuinavale?)".14. ROBERT McLAREN, lecturer. No service. Still potentially liable."I have never contemplated serving in the regime's defence force because I totally oppose the apaprtheid system".15. ROBERT LINDEN, journalist. Completed initial service."I refuse to kill my fellow South Africans to enforce a wicked system".16. PETER ROUSSOS, 32, company director. Still liable for initial service."I have no intention whatsoever of bolstering an unjust and unstable society".17. RICHARD GUY WICKSTEED, 30, independent film and video maker. Still liable for initial service.

"The SADF is an racist, unrepresentative army involved in invasions, attrocities and attacks on the ANC. It suports terror in Angola and Mozambique by Unita and the MNR. It collaborates with fascist states. It refuses to sign the Geneva Convention dealing with wars of national liberation. It has nuclear warfare capacity. It brutalises and indoctrinates young conscripts".18. STELIOS COMNINOS, 35, educational administrator. Still liable for initial service."I am opposed to apartheid. The SADF upholds apartheid".19. DEREK ANDRE HANEKOM, 36, farmer, administrator. Completed initial service. Held for a year in detention and then jailed for two years in Pretoria Central Prison for charges under the Defence Act. It was alleged he recruited an SADF conscript, Roland Hunter, into ANC to collect information of the SADF's role in training Renamo in the Northern Transvaal. Left South Africa last year when his wife, Trish, was deported to Zimbabwe."I see no moral justification for any South African to serve in a defence force which upholds a brutally unjust system. The SADF defends the apartheid system. The SADF has caused devestation in the entire southern African region through is policy of destabilisation and through direct acts of aggresion against the frontline states. The SADF has murdered many of my own countrymen."The SADF is correctly perceived by the majority of South Africans as the enemy of the people of our country. By serving in the SADF I would be declaring myself a supporter of apartheid. I would be declaring war against my own people. I can not do that."I do not believe it should be viewed simply as a matter of individual conscience. I would like to see ALL white male South Africans refusing to serve in the SADF in ANY capacity".20. BRETT MYRDAL, 29, lecturer in chemistry. Still liable for initial service. Publicly objected to his call-up in 1983 and was charged. Trial postponed at last minute to allow change in law to come into effect, making him liable for six years rather than two years imprisonment. Went into exile in 1984."I cannot, in good conscience, serve in the SADF because it is a an anti-democratic force which upholds white minority rule. I have witnessed the role of the SADF in crushing resistence to apartheid in South Africa. I have witnessed in exile the role of the SADF in destabilises the sub-continent. I support the Freedom Charter and those forces working for its realisation. I am therefore not prepared to wear the uniform of apartheid, but would be prepared to defend a united, non-racial and democratic South Africa".21. CHRIS BROCK, 36, cooperative adviser. Completed initial service.22. MIKE SLAYEN, 30, town planner. Still liable for initial service.23. EDWIN ANGLESS, 30, film producer. Still liable for initial service.
