IhavewaitedthewholeyearbeforesendingoutaNashFlashinordertopaytributetoourpreviousHeadofHousePeterRaney.Itisnownearlyayearsincewereceivedthetragic

newsofPetersfatalaccidentandIwantedthisFlashtobeaspecialone.Itisalsoa

bumperissueandIhopeyouallenjoyit.

TheRemoveCamp

GaryPlayeroncesaid:ThemoreIpractice-theluckierIget.andthisishowIfeelabouttheRemoveCamp.The

moreIdoit,themoreexperienceIgainandthebetterIbecomeinlookingaftertheboys.FortunatelyIhadhelp

frommyHeadofHouse-TinayeTengendewhotooktheboysunderhiswingandmadethemfeelwelcomeand

veryspecial.ThisyearsRemovesareawonderfulbunchofboysandfromtheminutego,theygrabbedthebullby

thehornsandeachandeveryoneofthemparticipatedfully.VerysoontheybecameNashbrotherswho

thoroughlyenjoyedthecampandthatisthereasonwhytheyarestillaverytightlyknitunit.

Unfortunatelywecouldntmakeitthreeinarow,buttheboys

madeupforitbywinningthespiritcupintheend!Aspecial

thankstoallthematricswhoensuredthattheboysstayed

focussedandwellbehavedthroughouttheeventandin

particulartoJodySwartz,JacquesOosthuizen,Matthew

Holliday,TinayeTengende,NkululekoPhakathi,JamiePretorius

andAndrewTuma-Waku,whokeptthespiritsandthesingingupuntiltheveryend.

Iwouldalsoliketothankeveryboywhogaveofhisbest,filling

upthelanesineveryraceandearningvaluablepointsforthe

houseevenwhentheyknewtheyarenotaCameronvandenBurgh.

InterhouseMusic

Afterwinningthiseventin2011,witharecordbreakingscore,theboysknewwhatitwilltakeinordertowalkawaywiththespoilsagain.Theyworkedhardandpracticedmanytimesduring:breaks,afterschool,afterprephoursand

evenearlymornings!Theygaveabsolutelyeverythingonthenightandtheythoughtitwasgoodenough,buthadto

settleforthirdspot.

Itfeltlikeavictorytome,fortheOlympicCreedsays:Itisnotaboutwhetheryouwinornot,butaboutthewayyou

playthegame.andIcanhonestlysaythattheboysplayeditwell.IwassoproudofthemandIwouldliketo

congratulateDavidArnotfordoingasuperbjobincoordinating/directingthesmallgroup,instrumentaland

individualperformancesandalsoTinayeforlookingafterthemassitem.

IwasveryimpressedwithmyboysattendanceonGaudyDay.Onlyafewboysdidnotattendbuttherestofthe

boyswerehere.Mostofthemjustwanderedaroundbutquiteafewboysparticipatedinthemorningsactivities.

Wehadtwobrothers(JohnandGregAlexander)competingagainstoneanotherintennisandwehadtwobrothers

(BradleyandTyroneDial)playingsquashagainsttheoldboys.

NabeelagaindebatedfortheCollege,others

playedhockey,soccerandbasketballagainstthe

oldboysandparents.

Listeningtowhattheboyshadtosayaboutthe

day,Iknowthattheythoroughlyenjoyedtheday

andallagreedthatthegamebetweenthestayers

andtheleaverswasthehighlightoftheday.

Iwanttothanktheboysandalltheparentsfor

enjoyingthedaywithus.

InterhouseSevens

Ourweekdidnotstartoffwellasourjuniorteamwasbeateninthefirstroundofthecompetition.Thissentthem

intothelosersbracketorthebottomfourbracket.Fortunatelytheteamwonthenexttwogameswhichplacedus

fifthinthejuniorsection.ThismeantthatourseniorshadtowinonGaudyDayinorderforustohaveachancein

winningtheoverallcompetition.

Iaskedtheboystodeliverandtheysuredid.Oneofmyhighlightsthisyearwaswatchingtheseniorrugbyfinals.It

wasntbecausewewonthefinalbutbecauseofthewaytheboysplayed.Itwaspurepoetryinmotion.Themoves

wereplanned,thehandlingwasslickandthetrieswerewellexecuted.Itwasarealjoytoseehowtheseboyshave

progressedsincethedaysIhadthemasU14Aplayers.

Congratulationstoalltheboyswhoplayedsowellandforwinningtheoverallinterhousesevenscompetition.

InterhousePlays

InthelastnineyearsatStJohns,IhaveneverheardofNashwinningtheinterhouseplayscompetition,butthereis

alwaysafirsttimeforeverything.SboNenewroteabrilliantplay,co-produceditwithAndrewTuma-Wakuand

walkedawaywithtophonours.AuditionstookplacenearlytwomonthsbeforePlayNight.Thecastrehearsedoverandoveruntilitwasperfectandthethreetrophieswewon,isproofofit.CongratulationstoSboforreceivingthe

BestPlayAward,AndrewandSbofortheBestDirectorsAwardandtoPhilBaloyifortheBestJuniorActorsAward.

AfterthewonderfulachievementsonPlayNight,MarioletteandIdecidedthatit

istimeforMcDonaldsagain.Theboysreallylovedtheirtreatsandweretheenvy

ofalltheothercollegeboys.Iwanttothankmytutorsforhelpingmein

distributingtheburgers,chipsandmilkshakesinaveryorderlyfashion.

Anotherfirst!Yes,inthelastnineyearswealwaysplayedsecondfiddletoHodgsonbutnotin2012.Inordertowin

tabloidsoneneedsnumbers.Themoreboysparticipatingthebiggeryourchancesareofwinning.Ofcourseyou

stillneedtheboystotrytheirbestateverystation.Earning5pointsperstationarefarbetterthangetting1andthis

boilsdowntoattitude.Thebetteryourattitudeistheharderyouwilltryandneedlesstosay,ourNashboyshadthe

bestattitudesbyfar.Highfivesboys,Iamveryproudofyou!

InterhouseAthletics

Okay,closebutstillnocigar.ItisnowthethirdyearrunningthatwegetsecondspotattheInterhouseAthleticsbut

wewillnotgiveuptrying.NashdoesnothaveaUsainBolt,YohannBlake,JustinGatlinoraTysonGaybutwedo

haveaGarethHarvett,DevonHenson,TyronDialandBonganiMolale(allwinners)

andwiththerestofthehousepullingtogetherwemanagedtosecure2nd

spotagain.Welldoneboys,Iamstillveryproudofyou!Butoneday,maybesoonerthanweall

think,wellgetthere

CrossCountry

Ifwekeepondoingwhatwehavebeendoingthepasttwoyears,Nashshouldbe

winningtheinterhousecrosscountryforthenext5years.Thesecrethereisthatall

theboyshavetopitchfirst.Withnoabsenteesthehousewillnotreceiveany

penaltiesandwithoutpenalties,thehousewillwin.Thesecondsecretisthatallthe

boysshouldbejoggingandnooneshouldbewalking.Thisensuresthatalltheboys

willendupinthetop200andthereisnowaythatanyotherhousewillbeatyou.

Needlesstosay,theNashboysdidbothandweagainearnedvaluablepoints

towardstheLeSueurCupcompetition.

Academics

ThisisourAchillesheel.Wewillbewayaheadonpointsintheinterhousecompetitionbutassoonastheacademic

marksareadded,thegapbetweenusandtherestofthehousesarenarrowedsubstantially.Ourboyswillhaveto

dosomethingaboutthis.WedonothavestupidboysinthehousebutIknowtheyarenotgivingoftheirbestwhen

itcomestoacademics.WekeeponmotivatingtheboysandIampositivethatwewillseeaturnofthingsinthe

nearfuture.

MatricDance

Ahighlightforeveryboyinhismatricyear!Theboys

pulledouteverystoptoensurethattheywerethe

talkofthetown.Flashycarsandsuits,beautifulgirls

ormodelsattheirsides,haircutinthelateststyles,

lotsofblingandsharppointshoesandofcoursean

invincibleattitude!Thehallwasstunninglydecorated

andsowerethetables.Thefoodwasofahigh

standardandthemusictops!MrCameroneven

showedtheboyshowtofistpump.Theboysmust

haveenjoyedthemthoroughlyforitwasthefirsttime

inmanyyearsthattheyonlystartedtoleavethegroundsafterhalfpastelevenandnotaminute

earlier.

ThisistheacademichighlightoftheyearandaspecialoccasionforeveryCollegeboy.ThisyearwecamebacktoSJC

andwedidnotgointotownagain.AhugemarquiswaserectedonBurgerfield,decoratedtastefullyandeverybody

wascomfortablyseated.Theweatherplayeditspartandtheeveningwasahugesuccess.DrMampeleRampelewas

theguestspeaker,BradDialwasannouncedasHeadofHousefor2013andNashwasawardedtheLeSueurCupfor

thethirdyearrunning.Iwouldalsoliketothanktheboysforbehavingverywellduringtheevening.

BoardersChristmasDinner

Thisistheonefunctionwherethewholehouseisnotinvolvedin,asitisafunctionforourboardersonly.Askany

boarderwhatthehighlightofhisboardinglifeatStJohnsis,andhewilltellyouwithoutblinkinganeye.The

ChristmasDinner,Sir.

OnceagainMatrondidnotfail,thethemewastheOlympics,thehallwasdecoratedaccordinglyandthefood

magnificent!DarrenWackheadSimpsonwasverygoodasentertainerandhecapturedtheaudiencesattentionfor

anentire45minutes.Whatimpressedmemostwasthathedidthat,likeTrevorNoah,withoutusinganyswear

wordsatall.

IfyouhaventbeentoaMorgantheBeatBoxershow,youdontknowwhatyouaremissing.Thisyoungmanis

phenomenalandwhenhestartsperforming,youwillgetgoosebumps.Theonlyhumanbeingintheworldwhocanproduce8soundssimultaneouslyandthereforitisnosurprisethatheiscurrentlytheworldchampionbeatboxer.

Alltheboysandgirls,aswellastheboardingandkitchenstaffhadawonderfultimeandIwouldjustliketothank

mywife,Mariolette,onbehalfofusallforthespecialevening.

Valedictory

Theemotionalfunction.NeverhaveIbeentoafunctionwithsomuchmixedfeelings.Ontheonesideyouareso

proudofyourmatricboys,yourbuttonsonyourshirtjustwanttopopbutontheothersideyouhavethebiggest

lumpinyourthroatandyoushyawaysonobodycanseeyourtears.Now,ifthatishowI,ashousemasterfeel,can

youimaginehowthematricparentsmusthavefeltandimaginehowyouasparentsaregoingtofeelin1,2,3or4

yearsfromnow!

Onerememberswhattheseboyslookedlikefiveyearsagosmall,shy,uncertainandfrightenedboyswhohave

changedintobig,tough,confidentandmaturedboys.Theyhaveallachievedcertainmilestonesintheirlivesand

youknowtheyhavetouchedyourlife,theyhaveinfluencedyou,shapedyouandeventaughtyousomelifelessons.

Thatisthereasonwhyyourchestwantstoburstthroughyourclothes.

Whenyousitdownandyourealisethattheyarenotgoingtowalkthroughyourdooranymore,youarenotgoingto

seethemperformonthesportfieldsoronstagesanymoreandyouwonderwhetheryouhavehelpedtoshape

them,haveyoubeenaninfluenceintheirlives,haveyoutaughtthemanyvaluablelifeskillsandyouwonder

whethertheywillrememberyou?Thatiswhenyoucantfaceanyparentsorpupils,foryouknowyouwillnotbe

abletotalktothem.

Asagolfer,thisismysportinghighlightoftheyear.Toseethefathersandmothersplayingagameofgolfwiththeir

sons,isasensationonecannotputintowords.Thebondingwhichtookplacebetweenfatherandson,thecheers

afteramonsterdrive,thelaughterforabadshot,theadvice(whichtheboysgavetheirparents)andthestoriesat

the19th

holeoftheloooooongputtswhichdropped,wereabsolutelypriceless.

GolfClub.Westartedteeingoffat11:00andthelastoftheseventeenfourballsteedoffat12:04.Theteamsweregreetedwith

hadwhentheinvoicearrived.IwantedtoknowwhyitwassuchahugeamountandIwas

informedthatthemasterkeysystemwasresponsibleforit.Thekeyscannotbecut

locally,butonlyinCapeTownandthepriceperkeyisR120,00!Itisquiteclearthattheboysmaynotloseakey

anymore.Fromnowon,ifaboylosesorbreakakey,hewillhavetopaythemoneyupfrontbeforethekeywillbe
