Deception Island in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest for a whale-watching excursion, the sleuth arrives to find Katie's tour boat heavily vandalized. A threatening note warns Katie to "stop meddling." As Nancy investigates, she learns that the town of Snake Horse Harbor is up in arms over an orphaned Orca whale that recently appeared in the channel and has apparently decided to stay.

is a man of frustratingly few words. When he does speak, he’s all-business. He is truly a “modern” cowboy, equal parts ESPN, MTV, and the Outdoor Channel. He is not above trying to use his looks to charm his way out of awkward situations.

• Tex Britten

• Tex , the forty-something head wrangler, is an old-fashioned cowpoke. His weathered face and cynical attitude reflect the fact that he feels much more at home with horses and cattle than with humans. As Nancy makes her way to the cozy lodge, an explosion rocks the quiet night, destroying a bunkhouse. A wolf howls mournfully in the distance. • Gilbert Buford Gilbert Buford found the unconscious body of his friend, Bruno Bolet.  He also happened to be Bruno’s personal physician and declared that no autopsy was necessary.  And as Bruno’s confidant, he knew that Bruno owned a mystical artifact believed gave him immortality. In his old age, Gilbert certainly could use a crystal skull to improve his own chances of cheating death…
