The mandate of man-making education our beloved Vidyamandira is committed to impart is : live for others.And Einstein is to be prominently seen on a wall in Principal Maharaj's office as saying: 'A hundred times a dayI remind myself that my inner and outer life depends upon the labours of other men, living and dead, that I mustexert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.'

These ignite many a young mind as they come out of the portals of the Vidyamandira. The inspiration hardlydies with the passage of time. Thus even after fifty long years of their golden days at this temple of learning,some alumni of 1958-60 and 1959-61 batches felt recently that the system here of taking meals by sitting onthe floors of the dining hall and the assistCEnts serving food with their backs heavily bent, is unhygienic,uncomfortable and at times painful, too. They felt an urge to do something to correct the scenario and took upa Dining Hall Modernisation Project under which the dining halls of two bhavans (notionally of Sree and VidyaBhavans, the hostels they used to put up in during their stay at Vidyamandira) were to be furnished with low andhigh benches of suitable dimensions to take food from and food-serving trolleys for the convenience of theservers. A good many of the alumni of these two batches came forward with their mite for seeing the projectimplemented. An amount of Rs. 2,48,058 thus collected was handed over to Principal Maharaj by the representativesof these two batches on 15 August, 2010.

The 1968-71 and 2002-2005 batches showed the path. The 1958-60 and 1959-61 batches followed suit.A feat certainly worthy of emulation by other batches of alumni too-isn't it?

Creation of a new Chair: With the help of generous donation

from Dr. Chandrasekhar Brahma, an alumnus (1956-58) of the Vidyamandira, "Nalini Kanta Brahma Memorial

Chair" has been created. Prof. Gopal Chandra Khan, retired Professor, Department of Philosophy, Burdwan

University has been awarded this prestigious Professorship for the session 2010-11. The inaugural lecture was

delivered by Prof. Khan on 27 November 2010. The topic of his discussion was: "Greek Conception of Justice".

College Foundation Day: The College Foundation Day was celebrated this year on 6.7.10. Swami Prabhanandaji

Maharaj, General Secretary, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission and an Ex-Principal of the college,presided over the function and delivered the Foundation Day Speech. Swami Atmapriyanandaji, Vice-Chancellor,

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University and the immediately previous Principal also delivered a lecture

on this occasion. Swami Shivamayanandaji, another former Principal of the college was also present on the

occasion. This year the celebration was more remarkable as the college completed fifty years of its undergraduateteaching and started its journey as an autonomous college.

Felicitation: Prof. Gouranga Chakraborty of the Department of Physics had completed fifty years of his teachingin the Vidyamandira. After his formal retirement, he served the college as an honorary lecturer for almost 16

years. The college felicitated Prof. Chakraborty on the occasion of the celebration of the Foundation Day and

expressed gratitude to Prof. Chakraborty for his selfless service.

NSS Activities : A Blood Donation camp was organised

under the auspices of Haemophilia Society, Kolkata Chapteron 10 October, 2010 when about 96 students donated blood.

On the occasion of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the

NSS unit of the College organised a cultural competition withfinancial support from the University of Calcutta.

As in previous years, free distribution of new clothes and

garments was arranged for about 180 children/women ofthe locality on 10 October 2010 on the eve of the Pujas.

An NSS camp was organised at Sandelerbil (Sunderban)

24 Parganas (North) during 25-29 December, 2010. Altogether44 students in two batches participated in the camp. The

volunteers donated blankets and some reading and writing

materials to the poor students of the locality.

New appointment: Swami Abhishtanandaji (Prabir Maharaj) joined Vidyamandira in August 2010. He formally

took charge as superintendent of Sree Bhavan from 1st Sept. 2010.

Retirement: Dr. Dipak Ghosh retired from the Physics

Dept. of the College after completing thirty nine years of

service on 31.07.10. A farewell meeting was organised

in appreciation of his valuable service to the Vidyamandira

in general and to the Dept. of Physics in particular. Dr.Ghosh is still rendering his service to the PhysicsDepartment as a Guest teacher.

Condolence : Babulal Mallick, Staff member of

Vidyamandira Hostel passed away on 10.12.10. He hadbeen suffering from kidney failure for the last few days.

A short condolence meeting was held at AshajyotiConference Hall on 13 December.

Seminar and Other Lectures: Dr Purnendu Bikash Sarkar delivered a lecture on "Geetabitan Archive: Rabindra

Sangeet-er Sangrakshan" on 17.7.10. On Aug. 30, Dr. Jayanta Roy, Fellow, Cerebrovascular Disease, University

of Calgary, Canada talked on "Advances in Neuro Sciences and service to Mankind" Ambica Sarkar and Jadunath

Majumdar Memorial Lecture was delivered this year by Acharya Srivatsa Goswami of Gambhira, Vrindaban on

13.11.10. Topic of his lecture was "Sri Ramakrishna and Vaishnava Sadhana". On 4.12.10 Dr. Gopal Chandra

Khan, Nalini Kanta Brahma Professor of Vidyamandira delivered a lecture on "Anandabardhana and Kant-a

Comparative Study". A half-day seminar was organised by the Industrial Chemistry Dept. on 22.9.10 on "The

Prospect of the Non-Conventional Energy". The Reynote address was delivered by Sri Rudrendu Basu, Asst.Director, WEBREDA, Kolkata.

Tours: Tours have been conducted by the departments of Mathematics, Economics, Chemistry and Physics,

Educational tour have been conducted by the Dept. of Microbiology to Sikkim, the Students has visited some

industries there. Dept. of Bengali also organised an educational tour to Ajanta, Elora and Shegaon and had an

interactive programme at D. M. Burugalee College of Arts & Science, Shegaon.

Examination Result: The results of the Calcutta University Examinations have been announced.'
