At the moment, as you drive into Churchdown from the Elmbridge Court roundabout, you see fields on both sides. As you drive you are greeted by a ‘Please drive carefully through the Village’ sign. Being close to the motorway and to Cheltenham and Gloucester has always appealed to me for its convenience, and the view from Chosen Hill has always taken my breath away, even after fifteen years. As Churchdown residents, we are lucky to live in such a beautiful area yet its proximity to Gloucester and Cheltenham now appears to be its main downfall.

The Joint Core Strategy (JCS) (comprising Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and Tewkesbury Borough Councils) details that 33,200 new homes are required across the JCS area up to 2031. The JCS document p14 states that this development is to be concentrated in and around the urban areas of Cheltenham and Gloucester as “areas of the borough which lie at the edge of Gloucester and Cheltenham will play an important part in accommodating development through urban extensions to meet the needs of all three authorities”. In the original proposals, 845 new homes would be built in North Churchdown from Westover Court to the Golden Valley bypass, and 639 in South Churchdown off Cheltenham Road East. When the Joint Core Strategy consultation period closed, the final decision was that the total number of new houses required would be 30,500, and the housing requirement for Churchdown would be 532 homes for North Churchdown and 868 for South Churchdown.

Both these developments are on greenbelt land, and the proposed developments will mean Churchdown will no longer be a village. The JCS document p32 states that the fundamental aim of green belt policy is to “prevent urban sprawl”, yet this is exactly what will happen as Churchdown will become joined up with Gloucester. On p10 it also promises that “the character of individual communities will have been retained.” Other issues with these new homes include: increased traffic congestion, further risk of flooding, over-

population and lack of investment in infrastructure e.g. no planned additional schools or surgeries. Justin Munro from Save Gloucestershire Green Belt and a resident of Parkside Drive said “some home insurers would not accept me due to flood risk. My home has never been flooded and won’t be as close to the brook as the new houses will be! The South Churchdown urban extension is a very water logged area of land. If houses are built here then this situation may become worse with localised flooding especially since run off will increase. I know for a fact there are houses by the north Churchdown development site and in Longlevens that either can’t get home insurance or struggle due to flooding risk.” If you would like further information, to see the JCS document, or to help set up a protest group, please email Isabel Fielden: [email protected]

£16,000 FOR HOLLIE GAZZARD TRUST£16,000 has already been raised by a trust set up in memory of Churchdown hairdresser, Hollie Gazzard.

The 20-year-old was killed as she worked in a Gloucester salon in February this year.

The Hollie Gazzard Trust was formally set up just weeks ago and has already raised an incredible amount of cash.

Its first major fundraiser saw around 700 people walked from Gloucester to Cheltenham last month.

It proved such a success, her family want to make Hollie’s Walk an annual event.

Her dad Nick, a former Cheltenham Town footballer, said

“It was inspirational for the family. The trust will help support, train and fund a young hairdresser in Gloucester each year, as well as support other charities, including Increase the Peace, which targets youngsters away from knife crime. While we are devastated and

can’t change what happened to Hollie, the funds raised will go towards worthwhile charities with the intention of helping others.”

Several other fundraisers are in the process of being planned at the moment.

Mike Hannis from the Gloucestershire-based 1 Rifles will be running 20 miles and cycling another 20 from the Beachley Barracks in Chepstow to the King Teddy pub, where Hollie used to work.

A charity fun day took place at The Bumble Bee pub at Waterwells Business Park in Quedgeley on Sunday, May 25.

Her former work colleagues at Fringe Benefits and La Bella Beauty salon held a Summer Hollie Day on Sunday, June 1 from 10am to 4pm at the Southgate Street.

Churchdown Parish take County Sunday Premier Cup with penalty win over White City

Churchdown Parish 1 White City 1 (Churchdown win 4-3 on penalties)

GOALKEEPER Rich Dunn was the hero as Churchdown Parish made it fourth time lucky in their quest for a GFA Sunday County Cup success.

They saw off the challenge of White City on penalties to take the Premier Cup at Tuffley Rovers’ Glevum Park.

Churchdown, who had lost their previous three finals, took the lead in the 68th minute through Ryan Rennebach’s goal.

But White City levelled deep into stoppage time when Joel White raced through on goal and was brought down by Dunn.

A penalty was awarded and White dusted himself down to convert, but Dunn escaped without a card and was therefore able to pull off the saves for Parish which secured the silverware.

Each team had six spot kicks, with Churchdown emerging 4-3 victors.

It is congratulations all round for a fantastic season! Not only have we kept a solid player membership of almost 300, we also have some silverware to add to the trophy cabinet.

U13 League and Cup Runners-UpIt has been an “almost” season for the U13s. They finished runners-up in the league to a strong Severnside team, and just missed out in the League Cup Final to the same team. There is plenty of hope and optimism for next season.

U14 League Winners, League Cup Winners and County Cup ChampionsThe U14 team could not have asked for more, comfortably winning all 3 competitions that they were entered

for. They took maximum points in the league, winning every fixture. On the 4th May at Cheltenham Town FC Abbey Stadium, they defeated Painswick 4-2 in the final of the League Cup. That was a repeat of the County Cup final played in Bristol between the same 2 teams, with the same result and scoreline.

CYFL League Champions – U14 GFA County Cup Champions – U14U15 League ChampionsYet more success, as our U15s, with 17 wins from 18 played, easily secured the CYFL league title. Fantastic effort by this team too.

CAFL Division 2 League ChampionsAnd finally, it is the league title for our Mens team.

This was a tighter affair and despite having 17 wins and 3 draws from 21 games, the Panthers still need a point from the final game to claim the title. In a nail-biting final game, the team managed to hold on to get the 1-1 draw that was needed. Now for Division 1!!

If you would like to get involved with Churchdown Panthers, as a youth player, senior player or coach, then please get in touch: [email protected].

LAPSED TENNIS PLAYER OR ‘RETIRED’?Well why not dust your racquet off and have a bit of fun & gentle exercise? Churchdown Club has a Tennis Section with two courts. We play mixed social tennis Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. In the summer there is a men’s night on Tuesdays. Want to be a bit more competitive? The men have a Tennis team and the Ladies would if there was sufficient interest. Juniors: well if there are enough then there could be coaching on Saturday morning

as there has been in the past. Want to get a bit of private practice? Normally the rest of the time the courts are available for members to play as they please. Feel too young or old? There are probably people younger and older than you playing in the club already (not true if you have had a telegram from the Queen). Cost? You have to become a member of

the Churchdown Club (around £10 p.a.) with its social facilities & bar, and the Tennis Section is £40 p.a. Total is less than 20% of the cost of a typical Gym !! Come along as a visitor and see if you like it! Contact: John ([email protected]) or

INDIGO KINGS NEW ALBUM OUT NOW!Fresh from their Arena show at Cheltenham Jazz Festival, we catch up with Churchdown resident and vocalist with The Indigo Kings.

So tell us, how was the Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2014?

It was amazing – we played to a full house in the Arena, with proper sound, lighting and stage management teams running around looking after us – I could definitely get used to that!

How did you get the gig?

We have played on the festival fringe ‘free stage’ for the last couple of years and we were approached by The Oldham Foundation to feature in a showcase of two of the best fringe artists from last year.

Did you see any other acts?

I really wanted to see Jools Holland but couldn’t get tickets, but I saw him and his band jamming in the green room before their show. I was just stood in the doorway watching in total disbelief about how great they were and that I was only about 6 feet away from him.

So the show coincided with the release of your second album CONTOTALLYFUSED. Where did that name come from?

CONTOTALLYFUSED is the name of one of the songs on the album. It’s a song about being confused by someone giving you mixed signals. We had other names in mind for the album but decided to go with CONTOTALLYFUSED after seeing the photos that we had done, it just seemed to fit in with all the craziness of us all trying to squeeze into a bubble car and having a polystyrene alligator – it’s weird and wonderful.

Ah yes, what’s the alligator all about?

The alligator is Charlie. He’s become sort of a mascot over the years. When we were doing the photo shoot for the album it was

the end of the day and we were all tired and a bit delirious and decided to add Charlie to the shot. When we saw the images back we all thought it was a bit mad but quirky.

This album is quite different from your debut ‘against a brick wall’ in 2012. Was that intentional?

I suppose it was intentional but without realising it. We knew we wanted more members of the band to add to the song writing process and

I suppose by default that means it will be different, as everyone has different influences.

So what’s next for The Indigo Kings?

We will be supporting the new album launch with a summer tour, taking in several of the big jazz festivals including the famous Upton Jazz (28th June), Marlborough Jazz (18th July) and culminating with a main stage appearance at the Twinwood Vintage Festival on 25th August. Locally, we will also be at Jumpin at the Woodside Festival at Dowtys Staverton on 23rd May and Huntley Beer and Music Festival on 1st August.

Where can everybody get the album?

It can be downloaded from iTunes or Amazon, plus lots of other smaller online retailers and Spotify. Hard copies which show all the artwork inside including us all squeezed into a bubble car are at Rise Records in Cheltenham or just find us online and we’ll post you one.

And how can people find out more?

Our website is www.theindigokings.co.uk and has links to everything you need. By far the best thing is to follow us on facebook, as then you’ll get all the gig listings, stories, photos and competitions.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE AIRPORT NEWSJET AGE MUSEUM OFFICIALLY OPENSJet Age Museum volunteers worked tirelessly putting the finishing touches to their new museum at Staverton, ahead of the official opening.

Former Royal Navy test pilot, 95-year old Captain Eric Brown, the last surviving pilot to have flown the Gloster E28/39 first Allied jet, will unveil a brass plaque at the museum to invited guests on Friday, followed by a gala weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Museum chairman, John Lewer said: - “Our team of volunteers worked hard to put our new exhibits on display. We’re very excited to have officially opened our doors to the public. We’ve had great feedback during our preview openings to date and visitor

numbers have far exceeded our expectations. CHURCHDOWN HEALTH CENTRE DEBATEFierce debate over a potential site for a new Churchdown Health Centre is likely to be ignited again, once a ruling on a village green application has been decided next month.

Residents living near to Churchdown Community Centre off Parton Road have been determined to block plans to build a new health hub there since the idea was first mooted two years ago. The existing surgery serves 14,000 but is in urgent need of expansion. And a saga to determine where that centre should be built has dragged on for more than a decade, frustrating many patients and residents. Land at Buttermilk Lane was first earmarked as a potential plot, but the hopes of private healthcare developer Pembark Ltd and residents were dashed when discussions with NHS bosses broke down.

Peter Bryant, who lives nearby the proposed plot in Dowding Way, has led the campaign objecting to the second proposed site, adjacent to the community centre.

He said: “We have had the village green status hearing with the planning inspector and are hopeful of a

positive outcome. All the residents are aware there is a need for a new health centre in Churchdown, but it has to be in the right place. We have proved that the green space has been used consistently over the last 20 years, not just by clubs connected to the Churchdown Community Association, but by all resident who live nearby. It is used for cricket, football and picnics.”

Other sites to have been considered include playing fields at ChurchdownSchool, land at Pirton Lane and behind Town Cars at Cheltenham Road East. Land has also been considered for the development behind Evergreen Nurseries.

At the time of the Village Green application, Churchdown Parish Council, said: “The council objects to the application as it considers there is strong evidence that the usage made of the site has not been use ‘as of right’ but is and has been permissive use. There are many other facilities within a short distance of the site which can be used freely.”

On Saturday 10th May, Simon and Scott Wildsmith – accompanied by 13 others from Churchdown – embarked on a journey which would see them tackling the highest mountains of England, Scotland, and Wales within a 24 hour period.

They took up the challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, who provided care and support to their mother, Sue – a much loved character of the village - before she sadly passed away in February this year having been diagnosed with the illness in December.

They set off on a mini-bus in the early hours, taking with them numerous bottles of water and a few kit bags as they head towards Fort William.

They battled through awful weather conditions – snow on Ben Nevis, followed by gale force winds and torrential rain up Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon – and had to navigate their way up through the darkness.

They did not quite manage to complete the challenge in 24 hours due to the conditions and a little mis-navigation, but you cannot take anything away from the courage, commitment and strength required to reach these peaks.

They have received a great deal of support from family and friends, raising a fantastic £2,300 in total so far on their JustGiving page. Can you help tip them over £2,500?

To support the team and contribute towards the wonderful work of Macmillan Cancer Support, you can do so by visiting justgiving.co.uk/trekking4sue.

Gluten Free BreadIngredients

325 ml semi-skimmed milk2 large free-range eggs

1 teaspoon white wine vinegar450 g gluten-free brown bread flour, plus extra for dusting

½ teaspoon sea salt

2 tablespoons golden caster sugar1½ x 7g sachet dried yeast3 tablespoons olive oil

MethodPreheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6. Warm the milk in a small pan over a low heat, then leave to cool slightly. Crack the eggs into a large bowl, add the vinegar, then gradually stir in the warm milk until combined.

Combine the flour, salt, sugar and yeast in another bowl, then, using a wooden spoon, stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until it forms a sticky dough. Add the olive oil, then bring it together with your hands into a ball, adding a little flour if it’s too sticky. Place onto a lightly oiled baking tray, cover with a damp tea towel, then leave to prove in a warm place for around 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Once risen, place the tray in the hot oven and bake for around 35 minutes, or until golden and cooked through. Leave to cool slightly on a wire cooling rack, then slice and serve. Delicious with hearty stews and soups, or toasted and served hot with butter and jam.

We have had a busy and fun time at school in the last couple of months: Two of our school teams competed in the schools tennis competition at Oxstalls Sports Park. One of them got through to the finals – we are so proud of themall the children have loved watching the chicks hatch and grow in our new chicken coop – we even held an art competition to draw a chick and we had some fantastic entries. Year 1 pupils visited Gloucester Folk Museum to learn about Victorian times – never again will they complain about their teachers at school after learning about how strict teachers used to bethe whole school enjoyed a great cake sale and a buzzing school disco, helping to raise funds for the school. Frozen Frenzy To celebrate our Friendly Association helping us to buy a new school projector, we are holding a movie night after school on the last day of term. Children will watch the ever-popular Frozen and popcorn and snacks will be served to them in the

‘cinema’ (school hall). What a lovely way to end the term! Summer Fayre Our fantastic summer fayre is on Saturday 21 June – put the date in your diary as it is not one to miss. There will be a bouncy castle and slide, pony rides, go-karting, pets at home, a juditzu demonstration, a BBQ and lots of fabulous stalls, as well as Pimms and lemonade to refresh the adults. Everyone is invited and we look forward to welcoming you into our school.

New pupils and parents Our website is a good source of information, but if you want to have a look around our school, do contact me at:

Carole Walmsley, Headteacher

More than 1,000 angry residents in Churchdown have signed a petition to keep their bank open.

Churchdown Parish Council chairman Pearl Stokes, who has lived in the area since 1966, said: “Shops, small businesses, schools and voluntary groups all use the bank on a regular basis. If they have to go into Gloucester, Cheltenham or Bath Road they have the added expense of petrol, parking or bus fares. If people are carrying money in heavy bags it makes it obvious what they are carrying. Some people will have to leave their place of work in Churchdown to travel to another branch. The service that customers receive at the HSBC bank in Churchdown is excellent with helpful and friendly staff.”

A spokesman for HSBC said: “Our branches are a very important way for our customers to bank with us and we have spent more than £100million in recent years upgrading and improving them. However, we need to ensure our branches are in the right locations for our

customers and, on occasions, this means we need to close a branch where customer footfall has fallen dramatically or there has been a shift in customer shopping patterns. Our branch in Churchdown is a case in point. Customer usage of the branch has fallen very significantly over the past few years. Customers habits are changing – Our network has to be fit for purpose and we have to ensure that our branches are located in areas where they are used. Decisions like this are never easy but we are working with the small number of customers who use the branch to help them reorganise their finances ahead of the planned closure on June 20, 2014.

Customers will have access to their accounts, to withdraw and pay in cash at any UK post office and residents of Churchdown have access to a fee-free ATM within the immediate area. Members of staff who man the branch will transfer to our other HSBC branches in the area.

CHEESEROLLERS COMPETITION REVIEWI was lucky enough to win a meal for four at the cheese rollers on the Shurdington road by entering a competition featured in the MyChurchdown magazine . I went with my partner Simon and friendsLorraine and Ian on Saturday 10th May.

When we arrived we were greeted with a ‘down to earth’ friendly welcome.

There is a menu and ‘specials board’ to choose your meal from, featuring dishes that range from the traditional cod and chips to chilli, for starters, two of us had pate and our friends opted for the breaded mushrooms, for mains we opted for scampi, cod and chips and the leek and potato pie, our food was well presented,

reasonably priced and the portions were generous. We did not have to wait long either. All in all a very good evening was had by all and we would all definitely recommend a visit.
