Politicians, stars, sportsmen, businessmen, from all around the world are promoted by the mass-media as individuals who deserve more or less our attention. But sometimes it happens to discover a person who is not a public figure that amazes us by his/her character and achievements. I'm honored to present you Valentina Zaharia, she is running the “Children in distress" NGO.

I met her during a visit for one of United Way projects and from that moment she made me understand what a wonderful change we can bring in someone's life with not too much effort. She responded patiently to all our questions with no intention to deplore the hard work but to evoke sometimes the moments when obstacles had to be overcome.

As in this place children suffering from incurable diseases and with low life expectancy rate are brought, it is not out of the ordinary that one of them dies in this hospice. When this occurs, a police investigation starts trying to clarify if the child was well nursed and if in any way this tragedy could be avoided. It sounds very professional but this repeated "crime scene" scenario may be truly traumatizing for the employees that are already highly challenged.

For me, the working person’s engagement there is unquestionable, as each of them has to offer care to those broken lives and, at the same time, great responsibilities make this job more difficult to deliver.

What revolted me more was to hear that people who should support Valentina’s efforts proved to be stone-hearted. As there were many cases of patients who pretended to be ill, a new law establishes that all persons with handicap must be revised by specialists.

Valentina tried to explain that those children's diseases have no cure, so this procedure is useless. But the doctors in charge of these procedures decided to make the required examinations not directly at the hospice but at his surgery. This visit to the doctor requires a great effort as every child must be permanently nursed and the car driver should make plenty of journeys between the hospital and the hospice. I don't know how the story looks from the other side but I'm convinced that with some understanding the situation could be avoided.

The people from the hospice set in my mind an example of tenacity and the words of my boss sound in my head: "When you find yourself very miserable, think to these people and you will find out how lucky you are to be able to trace your own destiny".

Outside the hospice I met the mother of one of those children who told me that her daughter receives here a better care than she would be able to offer by herself. With the help of the people from the center this woman may now have a job that allows her to raise another child.

Although I’m trying, it’s impossible for me to describe you in words that mother’s feeling of gratitude, but I fully perceived it back then.

When Valentina told us that United Way supported this hospice even from the beginning, I had an inner smile and this is why I tell you, my Accenture team, a sincerely “Thank You”. You offer your support to those people in need and make them understand that they are not alone in this challenge to offer a decent existence to their children.

This year one of our colleagues danced Macarena, we had funky shoes in the office, we ran for the marathon and we made many other wonders like the one that I just have told you, possible.

Thank you for making me believe that we are still good people!
