    Generation Gap Interview Assignment

My Grandfather Bryce is an amazing person. I have the opportunity to spend a fare

amount of time with him, but never really knew about his childhood until I interviewed

him. His childhood was both simple and interesting, especially since I am is grandson.

My grandfather, Melvin Richard Bryce, was born on May 4, 1932 in Fort Thomas

Arizona. He was born into a farming family and lived accordingly. His father believed that

an idle child, especially boys, were bound for mischief so he kept his children busy doing

farm work on the family farm in Ashurst, Arizona. Melvins job in particular was to milk the

cows. Every morning and evening, Melvin was required to milk the small family herd that

supplied a small income for the family as well as their source of milk. Through this work

Melvin became a hard worker, a trait that would greatly benefit him throughout his life.

Melvin attended the Fort Thomas Elementary School. Every day during the school

year after doing his morning chores, Melvin would catch a ride on the school bus to school.

There he studied throughout the day until about two-thirty in the afternoon when he

would return home to do the evening chores. Melvin did have an interesting experience

while in elementary school that is definitely worth telling. One day while in school, Melvin

had happened upon a piece of copper wire and like most young boys would do, he played

with it. In the course of playing with it, he happened to tie the wire from the leg of his desk

to the leg of another desk across the aisle. By and by, he forgot that he had the wire tied

between the desks and returned to his work. Eventually, misfortune struck in the form of

his teacher. As his teacher walked down the aisle to reach the front of the class, she tripped

over the wire and crashed to the floor. Immediately the teacher leaped to her feet and

began to serve out a severe tongue lashing to the boy who occupied the other desk, as my

Grandfather watched from off to the side in silent fits of laughter. Eventually Melvin

confessed to his innocent crime much to the teachers furry. Obviously, he got in severe

trouble and spent the next three weeks out in the hall.

Eventually, Grandfather moved on in his schooling to Fort Thomas High School. In

high school, Melvin participated in several of the high school sports such as football and

basketball. An interesting fact I learned about my grandfathers basketball team was the

lack of size. One day, I was complaining to him about the lack of size my team had

compared to other teams. Laughing, he informed me that he played center for his team at

five feet ten inches. This greatly changed my outlook on my teams stature.Another

important event in my Grandfathers early years was that he was married at a young age. At

eighteen years of age, he married my then seventeen-year-old Grandmother.

My grandfathers childhood was very intriguing. I am glad for the opportunity that I

had to interview and learn more about him and his life.
