STORY ON UTERINE FIBROID EMBOLIZATION

The scan confirmed it. I was suffering from uterine fibroids. Internet assured me that I was not the only one suffering (wonder whether I can draw solace from that!). Fibroids are pretty common. These benign tumors occur in more than 70% of women. !!I had heavy irregular bleeding, which was highly unpleasant and inconvenient.

Being a Business Director required me to travel frequently and planning my

trips around my dates was getting bothersome. That was when I decided a trip

to my gynaec was needed. She examined me, did a couple of tests and

informed that I was suffering from uterine fibroids , which required treatment

and put me on medication for temporary relief to reduce the heavy bleeding.

My gynaec explained that not all fibroids require treatment and do not result in health problems. But given my history of

hypertension and obesity, she recommended very strongly that I should have a hysterectomy to remove the fibroids.

I am not sure what I expected to hear but the thought of hysterectomy had me nearly fainting. Friends suggested I take

a second opinion and that was when we contacted Makewell. That I believe was the turning point of my quest for a

I must confide this; I felt it made sense

to directly approach hospitals instead of

routing through a facilitator and directly

contacted a very well known hospital in

India for getting the UFE done. They mailed

me back stating that it is not advisable to

undergo UFE because of my weight and

hypertension as there are high chances of

morbidity and mortality. !

When I shared my dilemma over getting UFE done, I was advised

by Makewell to speak directly to one of their shortlisted Doctor.

The Doctor assured me that UFE is completely safe and suitable

for me. Assurance from a person who has done more than 2000

interventional radiological procedures in UK and India brought

about a sense of relief that I was in right hands.

The procedure was performed under sedation and took just

about an hour. I was told by the Doctor that there might be

moderate to severe pain for the first 6 – 10 hours after the

procedure and was given pain medicine. I decided to stay put

at the hospital overnight just as a precautionary measure.




Three days after the procedure I flew back to my home

country. I was happy that I could get back to my normal

activities and resumed work within a week.

It’s been 5 months since the fibroids treatment, and I must

say I am free of symptoms and have no complaints! My

advice to all women who are on the crossroads about

treating fibroids

TREATING FIBROIDS THRU HYSTERECTOMY

I never thought that I could ever return back to my profession as a runner and fitness trainer”, says 34 year old Yoruba. !

Yoruba is a fitness trainer and runner based in

Nigeria. She underwent Laparoscopic

Hysterectomy in India in the year 2010.

Do what you love and you’ll never work a day. Yoruba’s passion for health and

fitness saw her make a career out of it and become a seasoned fitness trainer. Life as

a trainer was fun and fast paced, until she was diagnosed of fibroids 2 years ago.

“Being in control of your health doesn’t really make you superhuman, or so I figured

out when I was diagnosed with fibroids. Being extremely conscious of my health, I

never saw any health concerns crop up.

In the year 2012, I started to experience excessive bleeding

during my menstrual cycle and sometimes severe pelvic pain.

I had this vague pelvic discomfort, something that I never

experienced before.

That is when my gynaec ran a few tests and confirmed I had

a fibroid measuring about 2 inches. I was put on hormonal

medications to reduce the bleeding and regulate the

menstrual cycle.

Three months of medications didn’t show the kind of

improvement I had hoped for and soon I started to show

symptoms that any woman would dread. The fibroid had

in fact increased in size (grew to 3 inches) and distended

my abdomen that made me look like am pregnant.

Once again I found myself at my gynaec’s office looking

helpless and frantically searching for a solution.

My husband along with me flew down to India on Aug 21st, 2012.

On arrival, we were greeted by a Makewell Representative, who

eased our way through the admission and registration formalities

at the Hospital.

I was operated on the very next day. Surgery went on for an

hour and a half. Post surgery I was shifted to the recovery

room. Laparoscopic Hysterectomy being a minimally

invasive surgery, I experienced minimal pain, which was

easily controlled with medications.

insurance; I started to think about going to India for low cost

surgery without compromising on the quality of treatment.

advised me for this surgery. Nurses and staff were extremely

caring and we did not face any language barrier. The care

and comfort I received made me feel at home and I could

land.





I started with simple walking, slowly graduated to walking on the

treadmill then followed the walk/run routine at 6 weeks post op.

By 12 weeks, I was up and about, started running and there was

no looking back since then! Within few months, I was happy to

be back in my profession as a fitness trainer.

There were four incisions on my body and the scars are hardly

noticeable today and I really feel wonderful to have my life back!”

I was discharged within 3 days and I flew back within a week.

The doctor told me that I would be able to get back to my

exercise regimen post 8-12 weeks.

I was regularly in touch with the Indian Doctor and followed his

instructions to the T regarding my exercise. Getting back to

running was like starting all over. It wasn’t as easy as I had

imagined.

Being a person who doesn’t give up so easily, I worked my way

up slowly, without straining myself.

TREATING FIBROIDS WHILE PRSERVING FERTILITY - MYOMECTOMY

“As a teenager I suffered from irregular menses and the occasional fluctuation of weight

never bothered me much. However, after five years of marriage and 2 miscarriages at the

age of 32, I still yearned for a baby and I needed to find out the reason why?? I consulted

a gynaec, who put me on oral medicines. Taking Clomiphene citrate had its unpleasant

effects and I would have to battle with my bad moods on most of the days but no avail.

The USG report was suggestive of bulky uterus with

multiple intramural masses apparently known as fibroids

(benign, non cancerous tumors of the muscle and fiber of

the womb). The largest fibroid measured around 7 cm x 5

cm. I was advised to undergo a surgery to remove these

multiple masses which reduced my chances of getting

pregnant. It was scary but I was desperate to have a baby

and we wanted to look forward for the possible treatment

options.

A friend from India recommended us to contact Makewell for

Makewell ensured that our arrival was pleasant and made us comfortable. It was my first trip to India .We proceeded

to our 4 day stay at the hospital. On the very first day I underwent a few tests; the hospital staff was very helpful and

provided me with instructions for my surgery next day. I prayed for strength and well being.


On day two as I was taken to the OR, I could hear my heartbeats. Understanding my anxious state , the anesthetist

put me to deep sleep. My fibroids were taken care by Laparoscopic myomectomy along with adhesiolysis

(removing the adhesions), a surgery which required small cut on my abdomen and the scar hence would heal

faster than the conventional method.


I was shown the fibroids which looked the various sizes of small lemons .My abdomen hurt as I

was taken to my room post the surgery. My husband was by my side constantly and I could see

the nurses moving to and fro as I went back into a deep slumber.








Though the stitches hurt me at times, I recuperated well after the surgery. I was discharged as the

doctor was very happy with my recovery. We stayed at the guest house and I was continuously

monitored by the hospital. I followed up with the treating doctor, he advised me medications and

checked my wound healing.

Finally, on the eighth day my stitches were removed and I was ready to fly back home. I received a

complete plan of action about medications and set of instructions to take away .The doctor advised

me to take care of my wound healing.
