THE FIRST WORD
It’s a tough gig writing a shopping list these days, as the list of food no-no’s just seems to be getting longer. Red meat is the latest food
to be put under the health microscope and that’s the topic of this week’s cover story. Don’t despair – you probably don’t have to throw out your barbie just yet.
Also this week, you can have a quick chat with the woman behind the Sunshine Coast mayor, talk with the local university researcher who has made an amazing breakthrough on Ebola, travel to the deserts and decadence of Dubai and get the secrets to a perfect marriage from Sami – her suggestions may surprise you.
Get your fashion fix in My Style and Star Style, keep up to date with the best local news in News Summary, see who’s been out and about in Socials, and discover what it’s like to play hide and seek with a chameleon in The Last Word.
As usual, there’s plenty of property, including all the latest real estate, planning and housing awards.
Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? I have had many great days but one that stands out is the day our family moved on to our farm “Cashelmara” at Preston near Toowoomba in 1995, so the kids could have animals. We still own the property today and it is a very special family place.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Don’t yearn for the unearned.
Life changes considerably when you become a mother with all the associated responsibilities.

12 My Weekly Preview | November 13, 2015 myweeklypreview.com.au
It’s just after one on the afternoon I visit DB Meats in Dicky Beach. A wooden cutout of Sam Kekovich greets me outside the butcher’s. He’s
holding a blackboard; on one side it says ‘Ask about our XMAS side of pork’, while the reverse trumpets a special on Turducken – a deboned chicken stuffed into a deboned duck, stuffed into a deboned turkey.
Inside the shop, Shaun McIlwaine, a butcher for 11 years, welcomes me.
“I didn’t actually want to become a butcher, I fell into the position and found out I was pretty good at it so I just continued, and this is a really good shop to work in, customer based, getting to know everyone and having a connection with that other side of the counter.”
It’s an approach that seems to be working, with more than a tonne of meat going out the doors each week to the public, pubs, clubs and local restaurants.
“Everything is in carcass form so you’ve got to break it all down to its primals (rumps, rib fillets) and then it goes from your primals to your secondary cuts so it’s saleable. We still break all our beef, pork, lamb. We try and steer away from carton meats.”
McIlwaine is proud of what he does for a living, and is sceptical about recent warnings on the dangers of red meat.
“I think in large quantities, maybe [it could cause cancer]. The big thing is the nitrates they use in the cures and that sort
of stuff, but that would only effect you in a large quantity. If you were to sit there and eat that every day for 20 years, then you may expect some sort of abnormalities in your body.
“But it all comes down to genetics as well in the human body. You don’t know what’s been passed down from generation to generation. There could be something that triggers that in your body that causes cancers and stuff. I think it’s a bit of a joke to be honest.”
If you are a butcher, or someone who simply loves barbies, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) latest warning would be as welcome as gristle in a sausage.
After considering more than 800 studies covering a 20-year period, 22 experts from 10 countries classified the consumption of red meat as probably carcinogenic to humans, and linked it to colorectal, pancreatic and prostate cancer – but this was based on limited evidence.
The link between processed meat and cancer was stronger. WHO says processed meat is carcinogenic to humans, causing colorectal cancer.
“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer because of their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed,” says Dr Kurt Straif from the WHO.
“In view of the large number of people who consume processed meat, the global

or processed meats cause cancer, what it’s saying is you should eat red meat and processed meat within the dietary guidelines. That’s the key issue; it’s to do with consumption.”
The Australian Meat Council says the risk of developing cancer from meat is low and points to research which suggests Australian women should eat more red meat, particularly beef and lamb, which are rich in iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3.
Cottrill says meat, just like any other food, needs to be eaten in moderation.
“If you go to extremes in anything then you are likely to damage your system, and with a damaged system you are more likely to get things like cancer. Prevention is the answer. Eat in moderation. Eat a balanced diet and keep yourself fit.”
Forty-five year old Andy Pether from
impact on cancer incidence is of public health importance.”
The experts found that just an extra 50 grams of processed meat each day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 per cent – about six pieces of salami.
WHO says if the association of red meat and colorectal cancer is proven to be causal, the risk of colorectal cancer could increase by 17 per cent for every 100-gram portion of red meat eaten daily – which is the equivalent of a steak about the size of a deck of playing cards.
Kevin Cottrill from the Australian Meat Council, which represents about 2000 retail butchers and abattoirs across the country, has called for calm.
“It’s not new information. What it’s really saying is the consumption of red meat is something that people should take note of and in particular they should stay within the Australian dietary guidelines [about 65 grams of lean red

COVER STORY
Maleny is someone who is deadly serious about his diet. Six years ago he suffered a heart attack and it was the start of his new life. He went from 130 kilograms to just 80 by adopting a strict vegan diet, which means no meat, no dairy and no eggs.
He’s since opened a vegan restaurant in Maleny, Live Foods Café, and says the WHO findings are long overdue. He says numerous international studies have linked meat to cancer.
“It’s been a long time coming. It’s amazing it has taken this long for WHO to come up and say, hey look, processed meats are a category one carcinogen.”
The World Health Organisation says it is not yet fully understood how that cancer risk is increased by red meat or processed meat. It says when meat is cooked it creates a range of different chemicals, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens.
But for Pether, there is more than enough evidence to support his choice to enjoy a lifestyle free of animal products and he encourages others to do the same, dismissing suggestions people have to eat red meat to have a balanced diet.
“What I say to people is what do cows eat? And what do lambs eat? They eat green stuff. So predominately we get our vitamins and nutrients from animals second hand. So we get it from them and they’re getting it from vegetation and plants. So with a vegan lifestyle we go to the source like the animal does.”
Sunshine Coast nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara, who warned about the dangers of eating processed meats in her 1998 book Changing Habits, says it’s not necessarily the meat itself which is causing the problems, but what’s being added to it.
“I like to look back at history. We were hunter gatherers, we did eat meat, we were never vegans. So to say red meat may cause the cancer, I think there has to be more to it than just eating red meat. Are we looking at our wild meats or our domestic meats? They have a vastly different fat profile and chemical profile,”
Q. What is considered red meat?
A. Red meat refers to all mammalian muscle meat, including, beef, veal, pork, lamb, mutton, horse and goat.
Q. What is considered processed meat?
A. Processed meat refers to meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance fl avour or improve preservation. Most processed meats contain pork or beef, but processed meats may also contain other red meats, poultry, offal, or meat by-products such as blood. Examples of processed meat include hot dogs (frankfurters), ham, sausages, corned beef, and biltong or beef jerky as well as canned meat and meat-based preparations and sauces.
Q. Red meat was classifi ed as probably carcinogenic to humans. What does this mean?
A. In the case of red meat, the classifi cation is based on limited evidence, which means positive association has been observed between exposure to the agent and cancer but that other explanations for the observations (technically termed chance, bias, or confounding) could not be ruled out.
Q. Processed meat was classifi ed as carcinogenic to humans. What does this mean?
O’Meara says.“Processed meats today compared to
the old-fashioned way and the traditional ways of preserving our meats, they’re vastly different.
“Looking at the way the Spanish still preserve their meat, which is salt and hanging, nothing else. They don’t use nitrates and nitrites and everything else. I think it’s not so much the old-fashioned way of preserving our meats, it’s the new way of preserving our meats that’s causing the problem.”
“When you consider there are cultures in the world that eat 90 per cent animal foods and 10 per cent plants and they don’t have these cancers, you have to question the validity of what meats it [World Health
A. There is convincing evidence it causes cancer.
Q. Tobacco smoking and asbestos are also both classifi ed as carcinogenic to humans. Does it mean that consumption of processed meat is as carcinogenic as tobacco smoking and asbestos?
A. No. The classifi cations describe the strength of the scientifi c evidence about an agent being a cause of cancer, rather than assessing the level of risk.
Q. How many cancer cases every year can be attributed to consumption of processed meat and red meat?
A. About 34,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide are attributable to diets high in processed meat.
Eating red meat has not yet been established as a cause of cancer. However, if the reported associations were proven to be causal, it’s estimated that diets high in red meat could be responsible for 50,000 cancer deaths per year worldwide.
These numbers contrast with about one million cancer deaths per year globally due to tobacco smoking, 600,000 per year due to alcohol consumption, and more than 200,000 per year due to air pollution.

She has a simple message: “Seek out wild meats or grass fed cattle if that’s available. If you sit down to a meal, think a fistful of meat and four fistfuls of vegetables, as long as you have no health issues. And when you are looking at processed meats, look at the ingredients.”
Back at DB Meats, Shaun McIlwaine Shaun is taking the whole issue with a pinch of salt. Business is good, the best it’s been for a years. He’s just sharpening his knives for the Christmas rush and making sure he has plenty of those man-made birds, the Turducken – after all there’s no health warning about them.

USC STUDENT PIONEERS NEW EBOLA TESTMolecular biologist Ameh James from the University of the Sunshine Coast has developed a groundbreaking Ebola test that
could save thousands of lives in the event of another outbreak. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
In 2014, West Africa experienced the largest Ebola outbreak in history. As of October 18 this year, the World Health Organisation has reported a total of 28,512 suspected cases and 11,313 deaths, though
the WHO believes this substantially understates the magnitude of the outbreak.
A primary cause of its rapid and lethal spread was lack of early detection, but a University of the Sunshine Coast student has developed a groundbreaking test that could help prevent another epidemic.
Nigerian molecular biologist Ameh James was a world away from the chaos when it hit, having come to Australia to undertake a PhD in infectious diseases and molecular diagnostics at USC. Watching the news in the safety of his Mooloolaba home, he felt moved to help.
“I started hearing the news of the Ebola outbreak and I thought I can do something about it,” James says. “The outbreak was so enormous because of lack of early detection, lack of testing. If there were to be early detection, I believe it wouldn’t have spread as fast as that. So I thought, okay, let me come up with a rapid test that will detect the virus.”
He went on to develop a fingerprick test that can detect Ebola virus in less than 30 minutes as accurately as the gold standard test. Currently, samples are sent to central facilities in Africa and results take two days to come back.
“Hopefully the test can be used in results limited settings where they don’t have the equipment to do the usual testing for Ebola virus. The gold standard for testing Ebola is very expensive and not affordable, so what I did was to develop a test that is comparable with the gold standard and that will be used across Africa or where there is limited resources for testing Ebola virus.”
James’ work resulted in him being awarded a competitive sponsorship to attend the esteemed UNESCO Merck Africa Research Summit (MARS) held in Geneva,
PROFILE
Switzerland on October 19 and 20. He collaborated with like-minded researchers and delivered a presentation to leading scientists and academics.
“The response was very good,” he says. “Other scientists were highly impressed with my approach and what I did. They said yes, this is what Africa needs at the moment.”
James has validated his test in CSIRO laboratories in Geelong and Dr Joanne Macdonald, James’ PhD supervisor, says she believes the test could have a major impact on disease monitoring in Africa. In December, he will travel to Nigeria for three months to test his techniques in clinical settings.
“At the moment, Nigeria doesn’t have any cases, but recently there has been an Ebola scare,” he says. “People get panicked, especially hospital workers. So while I’m there, I’ll be able to respond to such an Ebola scare. I will train laboratory staff on how to use my test and whenever they have a case, provide an intervention.
“There are reports that there could be future outbreaks in about 15 countries as a result of climate change and vegetation in some parts of Africa. At the moment it’s not a major concern, however we need to prepare for future outbreaks; the recent outbreak was so massive because we weren’t prepared for it. The damage it caused, nobody expected it to happen. What I’ve done is develop one of those prevention strategies.”

KEN MILLS TOYOTA PRESENTS
THE NEW FORTUNERTURBO DIESEL 4WD
The fiery red sun is sinking beneath the desert dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see in every direction.
We are taking part in one of Arabian Adventures’ Sundowner Desert Safaris – a magical evening that begins with a thrilling journey over the sand dunes in
the Dubai Conservation Reserve and ends with a Middle Eastern feast under the stars at a traditional Bedouin-style camp.
Although we had arrived in the United Arab Emirates only a few hours before, the forest of shiny skyscrapers, network of busy highways and hustle and bustle of the city that greeted us now seems a
million kilometres away.“Largest in the world” and “world
record holder” are phrases I hear quite often on my five-day trip to Dubai.
Construction work is taking place everywhere, and it has even been suggested that 25 per cent of the world’s cranes are situated in the city.
But despite being the world’s fastest growing urban area, Dubai is still in touch with its traditions and Arabian way of life, and visitors can easily find areas rich in history and culture, as well as modern luxuries that will not break the bank.
Of course, it is free to visit Dubai’s old town, but for just 155 dirhams ($60) a person, an Arabian Adventures guide will take you on a Merchants’ Tour around the cobblestoned streets of the Fahidi Historical District and on to the famous spice and gold souks.
Almost everything you can think of is for sale at these markets, some of it authentic and valuable, but most not.
However, it is great fun finding out what is what – bartering and bantering with the shopkeepers, and trying out the local delicacies, including camel milk chocolate.
At the Sheikh Mohammed Centre For Cultural Understanding (SMCCU), we join a pair of Emirati hosts for a traditional

Nevertheless, despite Dubai’s rich history, it is the 21st-century hotels, shopping malls, beaches, clubs and bars that have made the city into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.
And although many visitors are bound to make a beeline for the high-rise hotels down on Jumeirah Beach or at the Marina, boutique hotels such as Manzil Downtown Dubai and Vida Downtown Dubai offer a similar level of service, luxury and comfort, but in a more scaled-down fashion.

On our final day, we leave the steaming hot city, desert and old town behind, and head to Jumeirah Beach for a cooling afternoon of watersports at Watercooled, adjacent to the Doubletree By Hilton Hotel.
We cruise around the bay on a Hobie catamaran, while the others try stand-up paddleboarding, all in the shadow of the enormous Manhattan-style skyline created by the luxury big-name hotels.
A London Eye-style ferris wheel is being built just off Jumeirah Beach, but as with the Big Ben replica and most other things in the city, it will be significantly bigger than the original.
And speaking of size, on our final evening in Dubai, we see what all the fuss is about - and take the 124 floors up to the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa.
Neighbouring Saudi Arabia is in the process of building something even bigger - the Kingdom Tower. But if there is one thing I learn from my weekend in Dubai, it is that no expense will be spared to topple the world record again.
And that is the thing about Dubai, although there is cash, construction and sheer extravagance everywhere, Arabian adventure and affordable luxury is also within your grasp.
* Richard Jones was a guest of Dubai Tourism – AAP.

Cat lovers across the globe are banding together to create an album featuring music scientifically proven to enrich cats’ lives. Yes, you read that right. The Kickstarter campaign has raised a whopping $170,000 with almost 5000 people backing the project. There is still about two weeks left of fundraising for the project.
The creator is David Teie, a cellist in America’s National Symphony Orchestra. Seven years ago he wrote two songs that the Washington Post stated: “would have been major hits on the cat-music Billboard charts”. The songs gained positive reactions from 77 per cent of cats that heard them, according to a study. It was the first time music had been created specifically for animals.
Did you know mould has the ability to control the minds of certain living organisms, making them leave their homes to go where the mould wants to go? Researchers who discovered mould’s medical powers in regards to penicillin valued it so much that as the Second World War approached, they dusted the inside of their clothing with spores so that if something happened to their lab, the fungus would survive.
Uncovering the awesome facts behind everyday subjects like mould is the aim of Gimlet Media’s latest podcast, Surprisingly Awesome.
The show, which premiered this month, is hosted by New York Times Magazine economic columnist Adam Davidson and former head writer for Saturday Night Live Adam McKay.

Make sure you have your say on the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project - Additional Information to the Environmental Impact Statement before 30 November.
Visit council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
The expanded airport will:
• contribute $4.1 billion to our economy
• result in 3500 fewer dwellings affected by noise
• ensure the region has a fully compliant runway into the future
• boost tourism and export businesses
• generate more than 2230 jobs in the operational phase.
The Sunshine Coast’s popularity as a business and tourist destination and a great place to live, work and play is continuing to grow. Sunshine Coast Airport’s airline partners have introduced new flights to cater for this increased popularity.
And there’s so much more potential.
Sunshine Coast Airport has been operating and evolving for more than 50 years. Now, more than ever, Australia’s fastest growing airport needs to expand to meet the needs of our community and to continue to support the development of the region’s economy.
The current airport runway is too short and too narrow.
The expansion project will deliver a longer, wider runway to cater for larger, fuel efficient aircraft which can travel further – to Perth, Asia and the Western Pacific to name just a few destinations – connecting you to the world.
Your Sunshine Coast Airport is going from
strength to strength
You will enjoy the benefits of flying from Sunshine Coast Airport rather than Brisbane:• save travel time and avoid highway traffic
• save money on affordable parking
• gain access to hundreds of connecting destinations.

LEND LEASE LOOKS HEALTHYTroy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
Lend Lease is an international property and infrastructure group with operations in Australia, Asia, Europe and the
Americas. The company’s core lines of business are designing, developing, constructing, funding, owning, co-investing in, operating and managing property and infrastructure assets. Lend Lease has a big presence on the Coast as the owner and manager of Sunshine Plaza, and also is a member of the Exemplar Health consortium responsible for the design and construction of the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital project.
Lend Lease shares have had a significant pullback over the last six months, and we have an “Accumulate” rating on the shares. The shares trade on an FY16 p/e ratio of 10.4 times, and offer a dividend yield of 4.8% (based on Ord Minnett forecasts).
Despite the stock underperforming
the broader market for a period of time, management proclaimed at a recent investor day that Lend Lease had the best earnings visibility it has ever had. The company spent some time during the presentation discussing how the business is well-positioned to respond to factors influencing the current operating environment.
By many accounts, the impetus in the Australian residential market is easing, following macro-prudential policy changes and less demand from China-based investors.
Lend Lease has pre-sold $5.2 billion of residential property, which underpins cash flow over the next few years, with 45% of this amount due to settle before June 2017. Of these, 20% of apartment pre-sales represent buyers from mainland China, of which 30% are due to settle before June 2017. Settlements over the next few years are supported by 10% deposits that have already been

Gateway cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne, are now the epicentre for economic growth as housing density continues to increase, a trend in other key markets overseas in which Lend Lease also operates.
This points to urban regeneration sites, which form the majority of Lend Lease’s residential portfolio and provide delivery flexibility to match market timing. Behind all this, Lend Lease has a sound balance sheet.
Lend Lease also notes a pick-up in domestic infrastructure spending, driven by population growth and the need to improve urban liveability and productivity. The company is heavily involved in a solid pipeline of projects
across the east coast, such as the North Connex motorway in Sydney’s north west.
Infrastructure also serves an important role in replacing any potential slowing in other parts of the economy. This will lead to a greater number of large-scale, complex projects being undertaken that will drive further construction growth, such as the second Sydney airport.
In commercial property markets, there is still strong demand for prime assets. From local and offshore buyers. Lend Lease has a strong track record of selling assets at cyclical peaks and has the opportunity to sell positions in existing assets at attractive pricing.
These trends also exist overseas, which supports Lend Lease’s geographic diversification in major overseas economies as well.

MY OPINION
Let me just put this out there at the start: I am very happy in my marriage.
As I have pointed out in the past, this Golden Husband even brings me a coffee every morning.
My friends’ partners all hate my bloke because they say he makes them look bad with his ‘hunting and gathering’ of the coffee bean on a daily basis. But I have earned my good guy, as I used to have a super special gift of attracting every deadbeat loser who was allergic to work/having kids/responsibility/growing up, etc. There was one fellow who slept under a Spiderman doona cover. Another was a drug dealer. One told me he did not want children and then had them with my good friend. And the best one let me take a bank loan to pay for a trip to Thailand for the both of us only to tell me he had a girl in every port.
So this current coffee collector is a keeper. But do you ever wonder, are you as happy as everyone else? New studies have found some startling results. Top of the list is that people who cheat have more fulfilling relationships. I know, right! How can this possibly be true?
Well, most self-admitted cheaters described themselves as ‘happy’ in their home relationships. And according to a study by Rutgers University, in the United States, 56 per cent of married men who had affairs said they were happy in their marriage. Of course they are happy. They are getting roast dinner at home and their washing done for
them and then feasting on lamb outside the marital household. The sly pigs.
The second surprising gem came from another American study that found couples in good relationships have on average one doozy of an argument every week. But men and women draw the line at being sworn at by their partner. These people obviously do not live by the rule that what you say in the hallways between midnight and 4am when you are sleep deprived with crying babies does not count.
And yet another report claims couples without children are happier in their relationships. When I read this I thought it could not possibly be true. But then I thought, what if on a Sunday morning my husband brought me breakfast in bed with a single pink rose and we then spent hours in bed reading our favourite magazines and blogs? And then I came hurtling back to reality because my three-year old threw sand into the eyes of the one-year-old who started screaming so much he vomited. But to be honest, I would be so bored without my little minions.
So none of these results make much sense to me. Forget affairs and fighting and even breeding: if you want a happy marriage it is truly easy. You just have to whip up that Nescafe to the bedroom nice and early every morning.
For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
Whether you ask the mayor, a developer, a greenie or the average resident, almost
everyone on the Coast will agree that in planning for our future we need to look after our environment.
But what does that actually mean? Does it mean we want parks or a patch of trees? Or does it mean room for flora and fauna species to call home? If it is the latter, are we concerned with vulnerable and iconic species (like koalas) or do we also care about common species such as lorikeets or sedge grasses?
I think that most people want to see all local species thrive, yet thriving ecosystems cannot be preserved in a patchwork manner. It requires a connected network of natural areas and careful management of the land, water and atmospheric resources that support them.
For example, the biodiversity in the mouth of the Maroochy River is adversely affected by pollutants coming downstream off land along the river, while many bird and mammal species move between the coastal plains and the ranges – a path increasingly obstructed by towns, roads and railway lines.
This is not to say that preserving the environment is not possible. Indeed the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme and Biodiversity Strategy provide a blueprint that allows for
economic and urban development as well as long-term preservation of the natural environment.
Effectively implementing this vision requires that our expectations of what we want to achieve are matched by our expectations of how we can achieve this.
This means developers will need to ask themselves questions like: How can I contribute to connectivity on this site? How can this development help improve water quality? Or indeed, should this site be developed at all?
It also means that residents who care for the environment and are worried about development need to ask themselves: What are the actual environmental impacts that will result from this development? Are those impacts local or do they impact on the broader conservation network in the region? How do the impacts from the proposed development compare to impacts from the current land use?
The Sunshine Coast is a fantastic place to live, with fantastic people and a fantastic environment. Virtually all people who live here care for that environment and want to make sure it continues to be part of our fantastic future.
What we’ll need to do to achieve this is make sure our expectations of what we want to achieve, match how we think. This can be achieved – a challenge that needs to be taken up by both sides of the argument.
A GREEN PATCH DOESN’T CUT ITConservation requires a change of mindset,
writes Wiebe ter Bals from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council.
FANCY AN AFFAIR?
Sami Muirhead knows the secret to a happy marriage – and it’s not cheating.

MY OPINION
The Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is about as far from Queensland as you can get. This
was the first colony of the British Empire, and the last province to join Canada – not until 1949.
The Province’s location in the North Atlantic has shaped its industries, society and culture. Recent changes in all of these are presenting new challenges and opportunities for the half a million people who call NL home.
Unlike the Sunshine Coast, NL is not adjacent to a large metropolis like Brisbane. The capital city of St. John’s is part of a growing region which dominates the province in terms of population, with about 40 per cent of the provincial population within the drive-to-work area (about 212,000).
St. John’s has been described as a ‘Metropolis on the margins’, as its distance from larger cities on the mainland of
Canada means NL’s capital city possesses attributes usually only found in larger cities. Memorial University, the only university in the province, has more than 18,000 students. Memorial includes a research hospital, most professional schools and all the faculties found in a comprehensive university.
Recent growth in the St. John’s region has mirrored the rise of the offshore oil and gas industry, particularly the takeoff in offshore oil exploitation in the 2000s that reversed the province’s financial fortunes. It boomed in the first decade and a half of the new millennium, surviving the global financial crisis along with the rest of Canada better than most countries – much like Australia did – because of its oil and mining riches.
And then, in 2015, oil prices plummeted. The provincial government is ‘suddenly’ facing a billion dollar deficit – as if boom and bust was something new.
The key – always – is to build on
KEY TO A THRIVING COASTA province that borders the North Atlantic may appear to have little to teach the
Sunshine Coast, but Canadian academic Dr Robert Greenwood says the places may have more in common than you think.
resource endowments – fish, minerals, oil (sandy beaches and blue skies if you are the Sunshine Coast, not to mention agriculture and marine industries).
Memorial University has been at the forefront of the development of an ocean technology cluster in the St. John’s region, the engineering faculty is being doubled in size, and students have landed well-paid positions as soon as they graduate.
Memorial has also been seen as a critical component in addressing the province’s demographic time bomb – aging baby boomers, rural communities
suffering out-migration and a dramatic drop in fertility rates as young families have fewer than two children.
Immigration is now critical. Universities are a prime attractor of new people to a region, and offer a community which supports integration.
Perhaps most important, universities, collaborating closely with governments, industry and community must advance research and expertise which contributes to innovation and productivity gains in all sectors.
Resource booms come and go, but smart people, smart enterprises and resilient communities maximise their opportunities and diversify their markets. NL is a world away from the Sunshine Coast – but in the ways that matter, it is exactly the same.
Dr Robert Greenwood is a keynote speaker at the Sunshine Coast Futures Conference on October 31 – visit sunshinecoastfutures.com.

Todd Widdicombe gears up for the next Bond movie with a new brew.
TODD’S GROG
ASHAI SOUKAI 3.5% AV, 330ml bottle.
Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. You can hear Todd Widdicombe on Mix FM.
When I go to the fridge, I often imagine my food coming to life like Woody and Buzz in Toy Story. The
steak looks me in the eye and I look it back in the eye fillet and it says, “pick me, I’ll make you strong”. The broccoli and beans yell out, “pick us we are fully healthy you’ll love us…oh pleeeeaase…”. Then the beer looks my way, winks Rob Brough style and says: “You know me champ, we go way back. I can make you dance…”.
Beer wins hands down every time. As I knock the top off that refreshingly frothy chop, I hear him calling back to the other foods in the big LG double door unit, “Don’t wait up losers, its gonna be a biggen, so long suckers”.
When I mentioned this to my wife Michelle, she simply suggested I’m nuttier than the Nobby’s factory and said it’s as weird – if not slightly weirder – than how I always stop the microwave with just two seconds to go.
But you see, that’s part of the fantasy, that I’m a dashingly debonair international spy and I’ve just diffused a bomb in the nick of time. “No really your majesty, it was nothing, all in a days work. Another brandy and dry Liz, or do you fancy an unfiltered lager and a pipe of A-grade Scandanavian tobacco? What was that? All of the above then a spot of fox hunting? Well you really are a saucy minx your majesty.”
Pity about the Diana stuff though. Apart from that lapse in judgement, if you believe in conspiracies, she goes all right. The old bird even jumped out of a plane for the London Olympics a couple of years back. I would love to have been in that

event planning meeting where they came up with that concept. “So Gordon, we’ve got this dead brilliant idea to get Danny Craig, as James Bond, to jump outta the plane and land at the opening ceremony. What ya fink?”. “No way Jeffrey, bollocks to that, let’s get Danny Craig, as Bond, tux and all, to jump out a plane with none other than the friggin’ queen in tow!” “That’s just brilliant an’ mental all at the same time Gordo, it’s, it’s brental! Quick, someone call Buckingham hook it up, then let’s do more drugs and go to lunch. Sorted.” Surely that’s how it played out, or at least I’d like to think so.
Funnily enough, the new Bond movie is out this week and I’m as excited as a fat man in a cheese shop who just found out there’s a sale on wheels of brie and he’s got dibs on the last two. Arguably, JB is the most famous spy in the world, although I can’t help but think he’d have been a much better spy had he not told everyone his name all the time. “Bond, James Bond. That’s B-O-N-D. Bond, James Bond”. Isn’t the whole secret agent gig about being just that, secretive?
Of course, all the Bond jokes are back too. Sean Connery goes to the doctor with a lump on his forehead. The doctor says, “Mr Bond what happened to your head?” Bond says, “Well I was in my library and one of my books fell down and hit me. Really I only have my shelf to blame.” The there’s the yarn about Sean Connery’s agent ringing to let him know he has an audition in the morning. His agent says, “Come in around tennish.” To which Sean Connery replies, “Tennish? Tennish? But I don’t have a racquet.” What does Sean Connery call it when he snaps a photo of
himself? A shelfie. Yep that’s enough. So although it’s Bond week and it’s a
week to be drinking fancy – think martinis and exotic booze – well because my last urine sample had an olive in it and upon doctors orders, I’m taking it easy, I’ve found a cracking mid-strength beer to celebrate with.
I’m pretty open minded when it comes to mid-strength these days. I count Rogers, Stone and Wood garden ale and Sunshine Coast brewery’s summer ale as my favourites, but there’s a new cat in town boasting a clean, crisp, refreshingly full flavoured hit and his name’s Asahi Soukai. Soukai is Japanese for refreshing and this low carb brew is just that.
It’s a slightly cleaner, milder taste to the rest of the Asahi range and will be well placed at your joint across the upcoming festive season when the occasion calls for a sessional beer. Bond may be the buzzword of the week, but Asahi Soukai has a licence to chill. Yep, I went there.
I give the new Asahi Soukai mid a solid four out of five thumbs up.

REAL ITALIAN FOOD
Take a trip to Little Italy with the new Rozzi’s Italian Canteen at Sunshine Plaza. Rozzi’s aims to share the wonderful things real Italian food is all about – good quality produce that is cooked simply and enjoyed with family and friends.
The Zoink Zoink pasta has double smoked ham tossed in gorgonzola, porcini mushrooms, tomatoes, peas and parsley, $19.90.
A lifetime collection of antiques, furniture, ceramics, sculptures and books will go under the
hammer in aid of the Sunshine Coast University this weekend.
The estate auction is in memory of Richard and Arija Austin. Richard died in the year 2000 and when Arija passed away this year, she listed the university as a beneficiary in her will.
Auctioneer Shane Pfeffer says in his 40 years of dealing with major collections of antiques and rare collectibles, this would be by far the most comprehensive and important private collection he has seen.
“This wonderful collection warrants worldwide interest with many museum, private collector and investor pieces represented in the listing.’’
Richard Austin led an interesting life. He studied law at the University of Sydney before he served in the Second World War. He spent three years as a prisoner of war near the Burma railway.
The auction is on November 14 and 15 at the Innovation Centre University of the Sunshine Coast. Viewing is at 10am each day and the auction starts at 1pm.

MY LIFE
GETTING YOURBEAUTY SLEEP
Sleep deprivation can cause mood swings, fatigue, weight gain and a host of other health problems, writes Jodi Chapman.
Sleep deprivation can leave you feeling sluggish, fatigued, unhappy, unmotivated, intolerant of others, and
struggling with your weight. It is crucial to get quality sleep for a great mood, a positive attitude toward the people around you, to deal with stressful events in a calm and positive way, to remain energetic, full of life, and motivated.
When poor sleep habits begin, energy lags, making it difficult to get adequate exercise, and to get through the day, not to mention you will crave carbohydrates to make up for the energy loss, leading to poor diet choices. Ultimately, staying fit and healthy can then be a challenge.
Sleep onset insomnia may be caused by emotional stress or hormonal imbalance, producing high levels of cortisol which is also increased by excess consumption of caffeine.
Maintenance insomnia – difficulty staying asleep – may also be stress induced, though is more likely to be caused by low hormone levels, digestion or liver problems, in which case improving diet and lifestyle will get you through the night well rested.
Resolve stressful issues, improve the balance in your life, take a week to sleep for nine hours a night to catch up, and do what you can to include time for rest in your day.
Be aware that doing too much of a good thing, such as working too much or exercising too much, can create problems also. Sleep should be just as much of a priority as every other aspect of your life, helping you achieve the emotional balance that you deserve.

If you want to introduce a coastal theme into your interior design without going down the path of the traditional nautical style, there are plenty of other options. When Sunshine Coast teenager Adem Crosby was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia in 2011 he was determined to make a difference with his life. The result was Team Adem, a not-for-profit organisation that raises awareness and funds for cancer causes.
More than $500,000 has now been given to help organisations that care and accommodate patients, families and seriously ill children. It’s estimated Team Adem has also saved more than 24,000 lives through it’s amazing efforts to encourage people to donate blood.
Sadly, Adem passed away on May 4, 2013 but his last wish to help others continues through Team Adem.
To find out more about how you can help visit teamadem.com.au.
On Saturday, November 14 at 11am on the Centre Stage just
outside of The School Locker, Todd Widdicombe will be hosting a

According to the Google Maps, Korea is more than 8000 kilometres from Europe.
But in the motoring world it’s getting closer all the time.
As evidence, I offer Kia’s new upmarket SUV, the Sorento Platinum.
A car that might be designed and built
in southeast Asia, but one whose heart lies much closer to Germany, Sweden or Britain.
Sit inside the Kia’s cabin and you could easily be sitting inside a Volvo with its plump, two-tone leather seats (internally heated and ventilated) and its stylish ambience.
From the outside, its crisp proportions and athletic stance could just as easily belong to a Mercedes-Benz, so self-assured is the styling.
And on the road, its quiet, punchy diesel engine and sharp, direct handling are surprisingly reminiscent of a BMW.
Yet despite features and technology
you’d expect in a car costing twice as much, this recently-upgraded Korean SUV costs just a tick more than $55,000.
It seems in their ambitious rush to challenge the Europeans, these Korean makers might just have leapfrogged Japan in the process.
This is the third generation of the Sorento and it lifts Kia to impressive new levels of refinement, comfort and technology.
Of course, the big European makers would no doubt argue that their corresponding models offer better technology in some areas, better features or finish in others. And they’d most likely be right.
But you’d need to be looking pretty hard to pick the shortcomings of this very accomplished family machine.
It’s good to look at, equally good to drive, is fuel-efficient, adequately powerful and feels plush yet practical.
Japanese makers asking $60,000-plus for their top-of-the-range SUVs of comparable size must be shifting uncomfortably in their seats. Because while they once could justifiably claim a quality edge over the previous generation Sorento, that’s no longer the case.
Keep in mind that Kia offers an industry-best seven-year new car

HOW BIG? This is the biggest Sorento to date even offering the option of a seven-seat configuration. Its longer and wider than the previous model, with interior space to match.HOW FAST? The turbo-diesel variant we tested was impressively quick off the mark with ample torque, a thumping 441 Newton metres, for mid-range acceleration. It’s no racing car, but its’s also reassuringly sturdy around corners.HOW THIRSTY? Our test machine took almost 200km to move the fuel needle off full, although that may indicate a large filling chamber. Official fuel consumption is a reasonable 7.8L/100km.HOW MUCH? Entry-level models start from just over $40 grand, but if you can afford the extra, the Platinum includes a long list of equipment for its $55,990 price tag.
KIA SORENTO PLATINUM
warranty and this new model boasts a five-star safety rating.
The new Sorento is available in three trim levels Si, SLi and Platinum, with the choice of a new 3.3-litre petrol V6 or upgraded 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel both coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission and push-button all-wheel-drive system.
Lesser-priced petrol models deliver power via the front wheels only.
Prices start from just over $40-grand for entry-level models up to $55,990 for our tested model – the fully-optioned, seven-seat Platinum diesel.
Kia claims improvements in quietness and handling, both evident in our week-long test.
As well as being impeccably finished, we were impressed with the quality and quietness of its interior and the nimbleness of its handling.
Leather seats are stylishly finished, heated in winter and internally ventilated in summer, with electronic adjustment in the front.
The seven-seat option is clearly more than an afterthought the third row having its own climate-control switches to adjust the temperature and flow of air from the roof-mounted vents.
Cargo area is 605 litres with the back
seats folded flat, reducing to 142 litres when they’re deployed.
The rear cargo hatch opens and closes electrically and boasts a sensor system to allow remote opening when the car’s key is detected nearby.
Dynamically the Kia impressed us with its solid, reassuring handling matched to a compliant, extremely quiet ride.
The 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel is hard to fault as well. It’s extremely quiet in operation, feels smooth and crisp (possibly more so than some German options) and delivers impressive fuel efficiency.
We were more than 200 kilometres into our road test before the fuel gauge
shifted off full. Its official thirst is a frugal 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle.
At the wheel, the driver is supported by a very comprehensive instrument cluster, with a scrolling series of information icons including audio controls, compass, trip computer with a digital
speed readout, plus separation settings for the radar-guided cruise control.
That adaptive cruise is part of an impressive suite of electronic safety aids, including Lane Departure Warning that gives an audible alert if you drift across the lines; Blind Spot Detection (with a visual alert in the wing mirrors); Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a speed limiter.
The frontal radar also delivers a warning and will automatically deploy the brakes if it senses a collision is imminent.
That might sound like an equipment list straight out of a European marque.
And if Kia keeps moving in its current direction, they might just have to redraw the map.

Hyundai Motor Company has announced an all-new global luxury brand – Genesis – that will focus on luxury through a range of new models that feature the highest standards of performance, design and innovation.
Genesis will be a stand-alone brand operating alongside the company’s popular Hyundai marque.
Hyundai will launch six new Genesis models by 2020 and will compete with the world’s most renowned luxury car brands.

The updated models of the Ford Ranger MKII, Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series and the Lexus IS all continue to hold the safety rating.
ANCAP chief executive officer James Goodwin says it’s encouraging to see more five-star vehicles on Australian roads.
It has been a long wait between revised models, but Mazda Motor Corporation is set to premiere the all-new CX-9 later this month. It will replace the original seven-seat SUV, which launched in Australian in 2007. The second generation CX-9 will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show held from November 20 to 29.
Fully incorporating the latest SKYACTIV Technologies and KODO design, it is a high end model of Mazda’s new-generation line-up.

BIG NIGHT TO CELEBRATE A BIG YEARIt was all smiles at the Next Property Group Awards, which raised more than $42,000 for Bloomhill Cancer Care. Words: Candice Holznagel
A stunning Noosa Heads home has taken out the prestigious Home of the Year title at the annual Housing Industry Association’s Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Awards.
The Paul Clout Design home was described by judges as “a finely detailed home exploring the upper limits of engineering and design’’.
It is the second year the Noosa-based business secured the coveted Sunshine Coast award.
Hundreds of the industry’s leading designers and builders gathered on November 6 at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort to celebrate the region’s best in residential construction.
The awards recognise building and
design excellence and are known for raising the bar in contemporary design, construction, innovation and housing technology.
Grant McDonald Homes took out the hotly contested My Weekly Preview and AD Marketing People’s Choice Award.
A total of 42 awards were distributed at the event, with other major winners including Ryan Designer Homes, Brad Read Design Group, Stylemaster, JW Construction, Jon Mees Homes, Craig Cleary Constructions, Vantage Building Group, Total Concept Homes, Glen Watson Building and Design, Update Cabinets Saltair Constructions, Contemporary Landscaping and Beach Homes.

NOOSA DESIGNER WINS HIA ‘BEST HOME’ AWARD FOR SECOND YEARthe awards attract an outstanding array of entries across a number of different housing forms.
“It is difficult enough selecting finalists, let alone winners, such is the high calibre of the entries received in 2015,’’ Collins says.
“This healthy level of competition ensures that new standards in design, workmanship and innovation are achieved across all award categories.
“The awards are a strong statement of the commitment and dedication of HIA members in Queensland to delivering exceptional housing outcomes that will stand the test of time.”
The winners will now compete at the HIA Queensland titles next month. HIA branch manager Stuart Collins says
Sunshine Coast charity Bloomhill Cancer Care was the big winner at the annual Next Property Group Awards with more than
$42,000 raised for the organisation. The awards doubled as a charity
auction for Bloomhill, which supports Sunshine Coast people of all ages who are living with cancer.
Held at Mooloolaba Surf Club, the night was attended by 80 people who joined together to fundraise and also celebrate the Coast’s largest independent real estate brand’s night of nights.
General manager Christie Turner says the awards recognise the top performers across four categories including Top Rentals Performer, Top Support Performer, Top Rookie and Top Sales Performer.
Next Rentals Sunshine Coast senior property manager Karen Stehr presented the Top Rentals Award to Rochelle Te Puni.
“Next Rentals was established three years ago and started with not a single property,’’ Turner says.
“Since inception, Karen has established a large portfolio of rental properties and now employs a team of seven staff, Rochelle being acknowledged for her contribution to the success of that team.’’
Top Support Performer was won by Aimee Berridge, who in the previous 12 months has played a pivotal role in launching a new website and developing a range of marketing materials.
Rookie of the Year went to Alan Riley who has impressed with his record waterfront sales.
The most prestigious award of the
night, Top Sales Performer, was awarded to Jodie Hedley-Ward for the second year running.
“Jodie outsold her colleagues across the group to take out the grand prize,’’ Turner says.
“Jodie has established herself in the Kawana Forest area and has shown how hard work and determination are the key to success.
“Somehow Jodie manages to juggle her office, family and a thriving sales

Hedley-Ward also won the Top Lister Award while Karen Jones secured the Top Marketer Award.
“The group was pleased to share an evening where we could all come together and not only congratulate rising stars but also spend the time together as a team and appreciate the collaborative and unified culture within the organisation,’’ Turner says.

Developers have long touted Sunshine Cove as a unique Queensland development. Now
they have the accolades to prove it.The Chardan Development Group’s
106-hectare central Maroochydore project won the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Queensland award for residential subdivision.
The 21st annual awards were held at the Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove Resort at the Gold Coast on the weekend and recognise projects that create sustainable and unique communities.
Sunshine Cove development manager Glen Cassidy says the group is proud of its achievement, particularly given the residential community was launched during the financial crisis.
But with 400 dwellings approved and several hundred more to be constructed, the estate has succeeded.
“The financial crisis came as we released our first stage, despite that, it never stopped selling,’’ Cassidy says.
The project is halfway through development, with a projected eight to 10 more stages to be developed.
Land continues to sell and Cassidy
SUNSHINE COVE LEADS THE WAY
says there will be another 70 title deeds come through in December and another 75 in early February. On completion there will be about 6000 residents living in Sunshine Cove, including a Living Choice retirement village.
Cassidy says Sunshine Cove is essentially one of a kind.
“It’s a true multi-use development,’’ he says.
“Central to the vision has been the delivery of urban terrace style housing individually titled and constructed by purchasers.
“This has provided a fresh alternative to traditional townhouse and apartment living – one that is well suited to the Sunshine Coast lifestyle.
“Sunshine Cove offers something unique: compact housing with an urban character offering a low maintenance lifestyle surrounded by parkland, water, lush planting and all the convenience of a central location.
“This vision has seen the emergence of some of the most dynamic and modern living options in Australia.
“Innovative allotment solutions have
opened up more room for lifestyle community facilities including parks, boardwalks, walkways and bikeways that combine to enhance an enviable Sunshine Coast lifestyle.
“The experiment has been a success.’’ Cassidy says the UDIA award is a
great honour and testament to the ongoing dedication from the Sunshine Cove team.
They secured the award against finalists including Lendlease’s Stonleigh Reserve and Ausbuild Pty Ltd and BMD Group’s Kinross Estate.
“This vision has seen the emergence of some of the most dynamic living options in Australia”

Next Property Group recently embarked on a fundraising mission that saw the group hold their inaugural Charity Auction event to support Bloomhill Cancer Care as they enhance the quality of life for people who are affected by cancer. The real estate company set a goal across the group to raise a grand total of $20,000, all of which would be donated to Bloomhill Cancer Care. The Charity Auction was inspired by the company’s Owner and Founder, Loren Wimhurst – a two time cancer survivor herself. Loren knows the struggle that people suffering cancer endure, she also knows the impact it has on those around the patient and understands why the support offered by Bloomhill is not just important for the patient but also the family as this amazing charity offer services above and beyond others, providing help to those suffering cancer and their families.
The event was held at the Surf Club Mooloolaba on Saturday the 24th of October from 6pm. The crowd that
inspiring Raelene Boyle, three time Olympic athlete opened the event with a touching introduction about how much Bloomhill Cancer Care do to make the cancer journey more bearable. David Holmes of David Holmes Property led the auction with enthusiasm and rapidly cleared items under the hammer as the event grew in
enjoyed the spirit and the atmosphere. Alongside the auction, ran a silent auction with some amazing packages of prizes that people could bid on throughout the night. There were over 50 local businesses that supported this event donating items from hampers, to free tickets and vouchers through to a jetski and a Fiat 500.
The Charity Auction itself was a huge success with every single item being sold under the hammer! While the team were focussed on raising on $20,000 for Bloomhill Cancer Care, they were proud to have raised a grand total of $42,578 – more than double the original target. The event was a team effort with members of the local community attending to bid on and purchase items, the local businesses that supported the event through donations for items to auction and was simply coordinated and facilitated by the enthusiastic team at Next Property Group. The team aim to hold a similar event each year in October and will aim to beat the total raised
lives for the better during some of the hardest days they face.
A massive thanks on behalf of the Next Property Group team for all that supported, attended and contributed to the event.

Hey peeps! I’m currently in North Sumatra at a little place called Treasure Island. I had to escape the onshore winds. Has been perfect 4-6 ft for three days - it is a right hand break that is long and fast with three barrel sections.
Currently anchored at an amazing spot called Turtle Bay with quite a powerful little left hand break peeling to the beach.
I’m afraid the news is not so good where you are – a few small waves over the weekend but get in early. Now where’s my Bintang?

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Close relationships are highlighted, and you’ll find there’s much satisfaction to be gained from cosy conversations, joint ventures and shared interests. You’re always butting in with advice but don’t help others unless they ask you first.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The sand Mercury pair up in your partnership zone so it’s time to get talking with loved ones; reconcile differences; and nip problems in the bud before they get any bigger. The more energy you pour into close personal relationships, the more they will blossom.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Tuesday and Wednesday are wonderful for talking about the numerous ideas that are buzzing around in your head. But avoid jumping to conclusions – communicate clearly and check the facts before you make firm commitments.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] There’s one way to describe this week – it’s complicated! Creative projects and friendships are highlighted, but do your best to steer clear of power plays and mind games. Avoid the tendency to be physically clingy or manipulative.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] You love shining in the solo spotlight but the more you communicate and collaborate with family and friends, the better the week will be. It’s not all about you Leo! Take the time to tap into the exceptional creative talent that is around.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] If you can balance right brain creativity with left brain logic, then you’ll have a satisfying and productive week. You’re keen to communicate with a wide range of people. Others will sit up and take notice of your comments, so choose your conversation companions wisely.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Your natural charm is boosted as Venus and Mars both visit your sign. So it’s the perfect week for some playful flirting, as you call in a few old favours. But – by the time Friday and Saturday come around – you may pay the price for procrastinating
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The sun/Mercury hook up is fabulous for study, research and self-reflection, as you get to know yourself even better. If you have a problem that’s bothering you, then tune into your inner wisdom for the answers you are looking for.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Don’t blame others for your (perceived) shortcomings. Saturn (the Teacher) is moving slowly through your sign (until 2017) which can be challenging. The best way to use this transit/energy is to train yourself to be the person/persona you most want to be.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] It’s time to broaden your professional perspective or absorb important information from a colleague. There’s always more for a curious Capricorn to learn! But avoid aggravating workplace problems, and be careful that your business-like approach isn’t misinterpreted.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Prepare for a busy week, as the stars accelerate your ability to connect with others, especially professionally. The sun/Mercury conjunction boosts your confidence, creativity and communication skills. Looking for employment? Now’s the time for Aquarians to act!
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] With Jupiter jumping through your relationship zone for the next 10 months, partnerships are favoured. But resist confusing others with long rambling Piscean explanations – strive to be more verbally precise! Partnerships and joint ventures are also highlighted.

THE LAST WORD
NOW YOU SEE ME, NOW YOU DON’TThe art of camouflage ups the stakes in a game of hide and seek, writes Richard O’Leary.
Have you ever wondered how you play hide and seek with a chameleon?
It goes like this. You close your eyes and count to ten. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight, nine, ten, ready or not.”Now, it’s fair to say my five-year-old
isn’t the best player of hide and seek in the world.
Most of the time he just follows the other person who is hiding and gives up their spot by giggling if the search takes more than a minute.
But it is with an unusual air of confidence that he challenges me to a game of hide seek this particular day, so when I start the search I’m more interested than usual about where he will be.
I am a little taken aback when I see him lying as stiff as a board in the middle of the doorway to the spare room with a huge smile on his face.
Not wanting it to be the shortest game
“You can’t see me, I’m camouflaged.”Oh. I didn’t expect that. “OK, so how can I possibly find you?”“Well you’ve ruined it now,” he says as
he gets up, “so we’ll have to play again”. Which we do, and not only is he still
‘camouflaged’, but he hides in the same spot every time.
After a while, we agree to play just one more game and he takes his turn at counting to ten from the big brown chair, which is the traditional home base for such games. He opens his eyes to see me lying on the sofa across the room.
He comes and jumps on me.“Found you”, he says.“No you haven’t,” I say, “I’m
camouflaged.”He giggles that little boy laugh and
this parenting thing seems like it’s the best thing in the world. I now just have to work out why he wore 12 shirts to school the other day.
in history, I feign looking in other areas of the house before returning to the spare room and stepping over my youngest son to explore behind the door and under the bed. Only on my return to the doorway do I ‘discover’ him.
“Found you,” I say.No response. Just a big smile and his

“No you haven’t.”“Yes, I have. You are lying in the
