THEMUSICEDUCATIONDEGREEREQUIREMENTSTheMusicEducationportionofyourdegreeplanincludesavarietyofcoursesdesignedtoprepareyoutoteachmusicinthepublicschoolsandtobecertifiedbytheStateofTexas.Inadditiontotherequiredmusiceducationcourses,youwillalsotakeatotalofeighteen(18)hoursofProfessionalEducationcourses(ofwhichsix[6]hoursareinmusic).Theseeighteenhoursaretheequivalenttoaminorinotherdegreeprograms.

CanIgraduateinfouryears?Yes,itcanbedone,butfiveyearsismuchmoretypical.Inordertograduateinfouryears,youwilltakenearly18hourseveryfullsemester,inadditiontoapproximatelyfoursummerschoolsessions.Asampleplanofhowtograduateinfouryearsisenclosedinthishandbook.IfyoucometoUNTwithcredithoursbytransferorexamination,youhaveabetteropportunitytograduateearly.However,donotrushthroughyourclassesjusttograduateinfouryears.

RequiredMusicEducationCourses:MUED2310MusicianshipforTeachingI-Anoverviewoffoundationalprinciplesinmusiceducation.Thecourseexploresthesefoundationalprinciplesintermsoftheskills,characteristics,andattributesofthemusicianteacher.AprerequisiteforMUED3100and3200.MUED 3100Musicianship for Teaching II - Comprehensive study ofmusical elements, structures, forms, genres and exemplaryliterature as related to basic principles of child development. The course explores instruction of the child in terms of the skills,characteristics,andattributesofthemusicianteacher.Prerequisite:MUED2310orconsentofcollege.MUED3200MusicianshipforTeachingIII-Teachingmethodsandresponsibilitiescommontochoralandinstrumentalinstructioninsecondaryschools.Thiscoursecoverssuchaspectsaspsychologyofyoungadults,recruitmentprocedures,rehearsalmanagement,concertprogramming,performancepreparation,fundraisingandadjudicatedevents,aswellasfurtheringthemusicalandinstructionaldevelopmentofthemusicianteacher.Prerequisites:MUED2310and3100orconsentofcollege.

FieldExperienceintheSchoolsTheDivisionofMusicEducationrecognizestheneedforundergraduatestobeabletolinkthetheoryofmusicteachingwithitspractice.We find it imperative thatpre-servicemusiceducatorsconduct theirobservations in theschool classroomsunder theguidanceofexperienced,exemplarymusiceducators.

Atthistime,MUED2310,MUED3100,andMUED4203incorporatefieldexperiencesintheschools.Additionally,MUED4103andMUED4109aresite-basedclasses.Studentsenrolledintheseclassesmeetinalocalpublicschoolwheretheygaininvaluableteachingexperiences.

• BeforeyoutakeyourProfessionalDevelopmentCourses,youmustbeadmittedtotheCollegeofEducation.ThisrequiresanoverallG.P.A.of2.75.

• Inordertostudentteach,youmusthaveanoverallG.P.A.of2.75intheUniversityofNorthTexas.

• Inordertostudentteach,youmusthaveanoverallG.P.A.of2.75inallcourseworkincludingUNTworkandtransferwork.

• Inordertostudentteach,youmusthaveanoverallG.P.A.of2.75inyourprofessionaldevelopment/certificationcourses:MUED4103orMUED4109,MUED3200,DFST3123,EDSE3800andEDRE4820.

OtherRequirements

MusicEducationstudentsmustcompleteaminimumof7semestersoflabensemble“ontheirprimaryinstrumentorvoicepart”.Oneofthe7creditsmaybeusedforajazzlabensemble,withpermissionofthedepartment.Aspartoftheir7semestersoflabensemble,instrumentalbandstudentsmustcomplete3semestersofmarchingband.Thoseinstrumentalbandstudentswhoareontheinstrumental/elementarytrackarerequiredtotakeaminimumof2marchingbandcreditsand2vocallabcredits.ChoralMusicEducationMajorswith60hoursofcompletedcourseworkanddesignatedatthejuniorclasslevelarerequiredtoparticipateinRecitalChoir.Thereisnocoursesign-uporaddedtuitionexpense.RehearsalsareheldTuesdaysandThursdays(12:00-12:50)Room:MU232OrchestraHall.Everylongsemester,choralmusiceducationstudentsareexpectedtoparticipateinthepedagogychoirforchoralmusiceducation,UpFront!Firstsemesterfreshmanareexcusedfromthisexpectation,butareenthusiasticallyinvitedtoparticipateiftheirscheduleallows.MeetingtimesareTuesdaysandThursdaysfrom12-12:50.Forattendanceconflicts,ameetingwithDr.McClungandDr.Rohwerisrequired.Thereisabasicattendancepolicyforallmusiceducationcourses.Studentscannotmissmorethan3classesinagivensemesterforeachmusiceducationcourse(notcountinguniversityexcusedabsences).Ifmorethan3classesaremissed,thestudentwillearnan“F”forthesemestergradeforthatcourse.Instructorsmayhavemorestringentpoliciesthanthisbasicpolicy.Pleasecheckindividualclasssyllabiforanyadditionalattendancerequirements.

Thoseinstrumentalbandstudentswhoareontheinstrumental/elementarytrackarerequiredtotakeaminimumof2marchingbandcreditsand2vocallabcredits.

ADVISINGPROCEDURESANDFILINGFORADEGREEPLAN

AdvisingProceduresYoumustbeadvisedeverysemester.YouwillmeetwithbothamusiceducationFacultyAdvisoraswellasaCollegeofMusicAcademicAdvisor.Facultyadvisorsarefacultymemberswhohelpyoudeterminetheclassesyoushouldtakeeachsemester.Advisorscanalsohelpyouwithwhateverproblemsyoumighthaveconcerningyourdegreeplanortheclassesyouaretaking.Alistoffacultyadvisorsandtheiradviseeswillbepostedonmusiceducationfacultydoorsandonthemusiceducationbulletinboard.Theselistsappearnearthetimeofearlyregistration.Lookonthelisttofindyourfacultyadvisor.Ifyournamedoesnotappearononeoftheselists,pleasecontactadministrativespecialistMr.JamelJackson(Room216A).Whenitistimetoregisterforclasses(usuallyOctoberandFebruary),youneedtosetupanappointmenttomeetwithyourfacultyadvisor.Inordertoregisterforclasses,youmustvisityouradvisor.YouthenbringtheadvisingpaperworktotheUndergraduateAdvisingOffice(260)togetyouradvisingclearancecode.Youcannotregisterwithoutthiscode.YoualsomustobtainarestrictioncodefromMusicEducationadvisorMrs.AnaWhiteforallthe4000levelMUEDcourses.Whenyougotoyouradvisingappointment,bringyourdegreeplanandalistofclassesyouwanttotake.

PROFICIENCIES

ConcentrationProficiencyRequirements

Concentrationassessmentshappenattwopointsinthedegree:oncetopasstheupperdivisionexam,andoncetopasstheconcentrationproficiency.Studentteachingmaynottakeplaceuntilthefinalconcentrationproficiencyispassed.Studentsshouldseetheirprivateinstructorregardingproficiencyrequirementsandpreparation.**ConcentrationProficiencytypicallytakenattheendofthe6thsemester**

MusicReadingOpen-ScoreReading:Youaretoreadaminimumoffourpartsinanopen-vocalscoreataslowtempowithaccuraterhythm.Youwillbegivenfiveexcerptsandyourexaminerwillchooseoneoftheexcerptsforyoutoperform.SightReading:Youaretoreadatsightinaconsistenttempoasoloofmoderatedifficulty.Youshoulddemonstratetheabilitytosimplifywhennecessarytomaintainstyleandcontinuity.Transposing:Youaretoreadandtransposeatsightasimplemelodyandaccompanimenttoanykey.

STUDENTTEACHINGAPPLICATION

1. You need to have an overall grade point average of 2.75with aminimumof a C in all of yourmusic classes. The education

departmentrequiresa2.75inyourprofessionaleducationcoursesandaminimumofCinallEDXXcourses.YoumusthaveanoverallGPAof2.75inallMUXXcourses.

2. YoumusthavesuccessfullycompletedALLProficiencyexaminationsbeforeapplyingforStudentTeaching. This includesthePianoandConcentrationExaminationsaswellastheComputerrequirement(maybemetwithsuccessfulcompletionofcomputerpackagegiveninTheoryIII),MusicEducationStudentReview,andTASP/THEA.
