Cosenza National Gallery is on the hill Triglio in the square Gian VincenzoGravina in Cosenza, and is housed in the premises of one of the mostimpressive buildings linked to the history of the city of Cosenza: Palazzo

 Arnone.

It plays a crucial role in the recovery of the cultural identity of theregion, perfectly connecting to the wider national and Europeanhistorical and artistic phenomenology, thanks to the works of itspermanent collection, starting with the first room, dedicated to thepainting of Sixteenth century painters from South of Italy .

In 1982 the building of Presidi or Palazzo Arnone passed to theMinistry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage with the main aimof establishing a National Gallery for the city of Cosenza.

 A large collection of paintings has recently been given to the National Gallery by theBank Carime including an altar piece by Giovanni Bellini where we find the Christ atCalvary and Cyrene and St. Francis of Assisi by Gerrit Van Honthorst.

The two biggest halls of the National Gallery of Cosenza are dedicated toMattia Preti, the Calabrian Cavalier of contemporary sources, and Luca

Giordano.

Painted by Mattia Preti, The Sofonisba receives the cup of poison, SanSebastian and other paintings as Mary Magdalene with the crucifix by LucaGiordano, the vast and impressive view with classical ruins and allegorical

figures, Jezebel eaten by dogs, the Death of Cleopatra.
