Meet Our Cover Stars Megan Smith and Lee-Roy Adams recently had a baby girl, named Angelee Megan Adams–herfirstnameisacombinationofMegan’s late mom’s name and Lee-Roy’s. Angelee is two months old.
Megan is anHR practitioner and Lee-Royis a civil engineering technologist. Megan saysshewillbereturningtoworkafterhermaternity leave is over.
“We have been blessed with a good support system and have had the help of family. Lee-Roy and my dad have been a pillar of strengthtome–alwaysassistingmeinanyway possible,” said Megan.
Megan also said that becoming a mom hasfilledher lifewith somuchmore joy,love and happiness, despite the sleep deprivationanddifficultmoments!
“The hardest aspect of being a new mom is being sleep deprived, as well as trying to understand why the baby is crying or upset –thiscanbeachallenge!”
Advice for new moms
“You will receive a lot of advice from many people–howevereverychild isdifferent,so choose to do what works best for you and your baby. Also, get a lot of rest and sleep while pregnant, and spend lots of quality time with your partner before
baby arrives. Lastly, although it seems like a wonderful idea to stare at your beautiful princesswhile she sleeps, rather get some rest so you can be refreshed when she wakes,” c o n c l u d e d Megan.

Antbear Lodge
Antbear Lodge is an owner run eco lodge in the Drakensberg Mountains that just oozes hospitality. The en-suite rooms are smartly appointed with fireplaces and Jacuzzi spa baths. There is a luxury cave with glass doors opening onto to a wooden deck with hammock chairs and a panoramic view of the Drakensberg Mountains. Meals are prepared with real South African flare and the organic vegetable garden contributes a lot to the ingredients that are used. There is lots to do in the area which includes Bushman rock art, hiking trails, horse trails on the property ideally suited for beginners and the Midlands Meander. We have 15 accommodation units and can accommodate up to 45 persons at the lodge. We have a chapel, and are able to cater for weddings up to 100 people.

There’s not a week that passes when I’m not attendingalaunchoranetworkingmeeting,orafunctionofsomesort,thereforealongweekend away in the Berg came at a very opportune time – I was totally shatteredafterourannualhighteaandneededtogetawayfromeveryoneandeverything! My family and I set out for Antbear Lodge in the rural countryside overlooking the Drakensberg Mountains. It is a small owner-runestablishmentwith15separateaccommodationunits.Westayedinatwobedroom cottage,with the kids’ having aloft roomupstairswhich they loved (theirownteenpad).TheJacuzzibathwasahitwithmywholefamily(notallatthesametimeofcourse)! Antbear Lodgealsooffersa luxury “cave”,whichisanaccommodationunitbuiltundera rock overlooking a gorge. Glass doors open onto a wooden deck with hammock chairs and an uninterrupted view of the
Peace and Quiet in the BergDrakensberg Mountains. Shared/communal dining is encouraged which creates a great atmosphere. Everything is cooked from scratch and they use vegetables from their own organic veggie garden. They have their own chickens for eggs, cows for milk, bake their own bread and even make their own cheese. Theyofferhorsetrails,microlightflightsandhot air balloon rides. I slept like a log and the peaceful surroundings were just what the doctorordered.

It is one of your biggest fears as a parent – being called by the school and told that your child is being disruptive in class andstruggling to concentrate. Before you know it, you are being told your child should be medicatedtohelpwiththeirconcentration. Thisisperfectlyfineifthechildisolderthanseven, has been thoroughly assessed by an educational psychologist, and a treatmentplan has been set out by the child’s doctor. Sadly,thisisoftennotthecase. The question is why? Simply put, beforethe age of seven it is nearly impossible to definitively diagnose a child with ADHD/ADDastherearetoomanyotherconditionsthatpresentinexactlythesameway.Theseinclude anxiety and problems with thechild’s motor development. One of the big culprits on the motor development front is low muscle tone. Muscle tone refers to the resting tension
inherent in the muscle. It is this tension that helps to stabilise and balance the body during activities. If the muscles have lowtone, then they are not stabilising the body properly, so the child will want to slouch, lie or lean against something to help stabilise themselves. If theycan’tdothat, thenextbest thing is to move around. This means jumping up during a lesson or movingaround,whichisseenasnotconcentratingorbeingdisruptive. The biggest challenge is always accurately identifyingwhattheproblemis.Fortunatelythere are child kineticists, educationalpsychologists and occupational therapiststhat can help with this.

When the doctor called with test results, he told me not to go up inanaeroplanewithanunqualifiedpilot–Iwas only to act as a safety pilot. Simply put, myjobasaflyinginstructorandmydreamstoflycommercialjetswereshattered. I have since read for a commerce degree, married an awesome man and have two gorgeous daughters. I found myself highly motivated tomaintaintightcontrolofmyblood glucose (BG) during pregnancy, butIfinditextremelydifficultnowtoachievethatsamecontrol.Mychildrenarenow16and 11 years old. DoesitmatterifmyBGreadingsareslightlyhigh?Ofcourseyes!No-onewantsamotherorwifewhoisgrumpy,unfitorunhealthy.This is the result of being a poorly controlled Diabetic,inmyexperience.
