Greetings to All.
First Friday is always a great time in
Multnomah Village, but this May 2, two great
events are going to be worth checking out.
The MAC Youth Arts Show from 5-7pm will
be a great family event (page 2). Then for the
grown-ups we are having a storytelling event
Truth Be Told (page 21). We hope you’ll join us!
Thanks to grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council and
the Oregon Arts Commission, we are developing final design and business plans for the Arts Cottages. This summer we’ll begin
developing MAC’s woodworking cottage we support from four local
woodworking/turning/carving groups. And we’ve welcomed Print
Arts Northwest as our newest tenant. More to come in the fall!

Love to write but don’t feel so sure about talking in person? Love telling stories but not sure what to do with a blank page? You can do both. Whether you want to write memoir, do a great interview, pitch your book project, create a play, or simply give your grandchildren (or parents!) the stories they should know, this is the class for you. WritingforTransformation&healingAges16&Up
Writing can be a remarkable tool for restoration and healing. In times of personal upheaval, grief, stress or transition, writing can be a vehicle for change while it also becomes art, something separate from us, touching and assisting others in the process. Whether you have written all your life or never written before, you can transform difficult life struggles into wonderful stories, poems, creative vignettes or memoir.

CreatingVelocityAges18&Up
Imagine sitting at the airport on the hood of your car, watching a plane take off and feeling the fast and faster moving air against your cheek, hair, and eyes. That’s velocity, and fine pieces of prose and poetry can create this same effect. Read others’ work, write your own, and get swept up in the energy of fine writing while observing the physics of it as well. All genres. Some experience recommended.

Recast&RevisionAges18&Up
A single detail, use of tense, description, or approach can entirely change the feel of a piece of writing. Experiment with others’ completed pieces by casting each piece with a particular difference. Watch how one strong choice can strengthen the overall piece of writing, and bring this back to your own work. All genres.

“We see achievement as purposeful and monolithic, like the sculpting of a massive tree
trunk that has first to be brought from the forest and then shaped by long labor to assert the artist’s
vision, rather than something crafted from odds and ends, like a patchwork quilt, and lovingly
used to warm different nights and bodies.” —Mary Catherine Bateson
“Exercise the writing muscle
every day, even if it is only a
letter, notes, a title list,
a character sketch,
a journal entry.
Writers are like dancers,
like athletes.
Without that exercise,
the muscles seize up.”

Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP & R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.
hOWITWORKS
1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.
2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a PP&R site, or online at www.PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.)
3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.
IMPORTANTDETAILS
A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be flexible and creative. Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through age 12.
If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
