ITU-T NGN Definition (Y.2001)
Next Generation Network (NGN):
A packet-based network able to provide telecommunication services and able to make use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It enables unfettered access for usersto networks and to competing service providers and/or services of their choice. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users.

Mobile Multimedia Today
We have “universal” voice telephonyInternationalTo and from many devices (PSTN and VoIP)Some service continuity
We have fractured multimedia services being delivered in many different waysVideo telephony is “catching up” but is still plagued by
Handset penetrationService coverageUser knowledge and acceptanceOnly 3GPP 3G324M (v. rare interworking)Strong interest in video value added service over-shadowing person to person interactive calls
Starting to see almost universal data accessRates are too slow for any multimedia in most cases

Regardless of whether circuit- or packet-switched, customers of mobile networks face a number of quality of experience issues:
Service accessibility (call completion)Video qualityVideo corruption on air interfaceEnd-to-end delaysVideo/audio lip-synchVideo start-up time
Known Issues Affecting Mobile Multimedia Customer Experience
The issues can be in the handset, in the network infrastructure or in their interaction

Challenges for Video Quality
Video quality can be significantly improved on a “better” network
Sustained Bandwidth3G/UMTS started to offer higher bandwidth (HSPA more so)PS Overheads still not solved in the real world (RoHC)
Latency3G/UMTS could not meet conversational requirementsHSPA can meet requirements in the lab but not yet “in the wild”
NGN promises concepts and architectures to provide better networks, but challenges remain in mobile access technologies

Video Blogging, Sharing, PublishingOverview
Enables mobile operators to play in the User Generated Content value chain.
Almost all 3G handsets are equipped with video cameras and are capable of making video calls.
Subscribers can publish their video content from anywhere/anytime by simply dialing a number and pressing a key. No browser/WAP waiting.
3G video quality is improving steadily – AVC/H.264 capable phones are around the corner.
Mobile operators can position themselves in the user content generated market and deliver a killer app to their subscriber.

Video Push
Subscription Push:Customers can subscribe to event based video push
News, Sports, Weather, Finance, Telemarketing, TV Programs, …Daily briefs, highlights, …Breaking news (e.g. sports score, …)
When an event triggers (e.g. breaking news, sports score, horse race finishes) – VAS platform initiates video call to subscriber
If subscriber is busy, videos can be forwarded to Video Mail or subscriber folder (locker) for later viewing so they are never missed.
Additional Notification:SMS, Email, URL, …

Video Push Services
Service accessible from 3G Mobile networks, IMS and Broadband.
When not sponsored by ads service can be billed by minute-of-use or by event/transaction.
Service can also be sponsored by Ads. A brief ad (e.g. before seeing the pushed content) is shown prior to pushed content.
Web portal for user preferences and feature selection. Subscriber can select:
Notification service (e.g. Sports, News, etc…)Notification features (e.g. daily highlights, briefs, breaking news, …)Notification schedules (e.g. time, recurrence, …)
Subscribers can set and alter their preferences using a standard browser.

What could mobile endpoints do on the NGN?
Finally reaching a point where the environment provides capability beyond simple meeting minimum requirements for mobile multimedia
The NGN defines transport of data and aspects of mobility. Its limitations will define the boundaries of the services we can provide over NGN
NGN applications must be capable of filling the space up to those boundaries in order to extract the full value of the NGN.No other restrictions need be therePushing up to these limits will enable innovation and further evolve or create revolutionary services

What could endpoints do on the NGN? AMS/H.325?
People will demand (and pay for) niche applications, but we can’t reinvent the wheels every time a new application is launched
Transport/QoS issues mainly solved by NGNApplications should be simple to build on top of that
AMS (“H.325”) can offerApplications independent of access network on loosely coupled collections of devices (“endpoints”)More innovation in the applications, less work in work on repeating work (and re-making the same old mistakes)System protocols friendly to emerging video services, mobile and fixed.
Thankyou!
