The slide presentation has been the cornerstone of family, educational, and business presentations for decades.

The term "multimedia" was coined by Bob Goldstein (later'Bobb Goldsteinn') to promote the July 1966 opening of

history "LightWorks at L'Oursin" show at Southampton,Long Island.

In the 1970s, the slide show format was introduced tospecialized computers, designed to control slide shows.

In the 1980s, personal computers were

introduced that allowed graphic elementsto be “cut” and “pasted” from onedocument to another.

In the 1990s, computer manufacturersmade their systems more accessible tothird-party developers who were anxiousto design and distribute their wares to the

marketplace. During this phase, industryrolled to the launching pad.

a. Creative industries

Creative industries use multimedia for a variety of purposes ranging from fine arts, to entertainment,to commercial art, to journalism, to media and software services  provided for any of the

industries.

An individual multimedia designer may cover thespectrum throughout their career. Request fortheir skills range from technical, to analytical, tocreative.

a.1.Commercial

Much of the electronic old and new media used bycommercial artists is multimedia.

Exciting presentations are used to grab and keepattention in advertising. Business to business, and

interoffice communications are often developedby creative services firms for advancedmultimedia presentations beyond simple slideshows to sell ideas or liven-up training.

Commercial multimedia developers may be hiredto design for governmental services and nonprofitservices applications as well.

a.2. Entertainment and fine arts In addition, multimedia is heavily used in the

entertainment industry, especially to develop

special effects in movies and animations.

Multimedia games are a popular pastime andare software programs available either as CD-

ROMs or online. Some video games also usemultimedia features.

Multimedia applications that allow users to

actively participate instead of just sitting byas passive recipients of information are calledInteractive Multimedia.

b. Education

In Education, multimedia is used to producecomputer-based training courses(popularly called CBTs) and reference bookslike encyclopedia and almanacs.

A CBT lets the user go through a series of presentations, text about a particular topic, andassociated illustrations in various information

formats. Edutainment is an informal term usedto describe combining education withentertainment, especially multimediaentertainment.

c. Engineering

Software engineers may use multimedia in

Computer Simulations for anything fromentertainment to training such as military orindustrial training. Multimedia for softwareinterfaces are often done as a collaborationbetween creative professionals and softwareengineers.

 d. Industry

In the Industrial sector, multimedia is used as a

way to help present information to shareholders, superiors and coworkers. Multimedia is alsohelpful for providing employee training, advertising and selling products all over the worldvia virtually unlimited web-based technologies.

e. Mathematical and scientific

research

In mathematical and scientific research, multimedia are mainly used for modeling and

simulation. For example, a scientist can lookat a molecular model of a particularsubstance and manipulate it to arrive at anew substance. Representative research canbe found in journals such as the Journal of

Multimedia.

f. Medicine

In Medicine, doctors can get trained bylooking at a virtual surgery or they cansimulate how the human body is affectedby diseases spread by viruses and bacteria

and then develop techniques to prevent it.

g. Document Imaging

Document Imaging is a technique thattakes hard copy of an image/document andconverts it into a digital format.

DOING MULTIMEDIA...

You to have a strong knowledge of what hardwareand software products are going to work for you.

Be prepared by knowing your software.

If your choice is to use a computer-basedpresentation program, such as MicrosoftPowerPoint, you can use the predesignedtemplates, artwork, sound and other features thatthese programs have to offer.

Multimedia PresentationTips...

Make sure that the proper software is installed.

This includes the version that you used to prepareyour presentation.

Having the proper fonts that are used in yourpresentation is mandatory. Without matching

fonts, your presentation text will not conform toyour original design.

Computer compatibility

Sound quality will differ from system to system

Screen colors will vary from monitor to monitor

Color depth can also be an issue

The Effectiveness of apresentation is based on three

things:

1. The content presented

2. The quality of the image

3. The effective communication skills

of the presenter
