A Fully Integrated Channel In A Box

Multi-Functional Universal Servers SD/HD/Ultra HD 4K High Frame Rate

SL NEO 3000

The main purpose of Channel-In-A-Box technology is reduction of the many parts of traditional playout system and master control (graphics, ingest-playout servers, routing, audio, channel branding) into a single integrated software application that operates on generic IT-based hardware.

According to proponents, this integration simplifies installation and maintaining, besides, it is cheaper to buy and operate it.

Fully integrated SL NEO 3000 Servers have on-board automation control, media storage and media database, graphics engine, file/line/VTR ingest, file playout, time shift, DVB IP/ASI TS encoding tools, DVB subtitling & closed captioning tools.

Multi-Channel Ingest and Batch CaptureSL NEO 3000 supports real-time multi-channel ingest to a wide range of codecs and file containers.

For ingest from tape, tape players are connected to the servers through RS-422/IEEE1394 server ports. Batch capture mode is used when working with a VTR according to record-lists events.

Automated Local Insertions

Multi-Channel Playout with Automated Source Switching

“External” Switching Mode. During the playout process, the servers carry out frame-accurate routing in accordance with the events in the playlists, controlling the external routers through RS-422/232/Ethernet interfaces using Harris/Leitch, Evertz, Network, Snell, Miranda and other protocols. This is an "external" program switching mode.

Using of “external” program switching mode is a classic and popular way of broadcast system creating, but it requires installing of additional hardware DSK/LOGO and separate graphic servers.

“Internal” Switching Mode. As long as the “Channel-in-a-Box” technology’s popularity grows, servers begin to carry out more and more functions, what simplifies the scheme of broadcast system creating.

SL NEO server is now not only a source, it is capable to implement internal “clean switching” of the “not-in-sync” input signals with those ones that are generated during files playback, according to the play-lists. This server also creates graphic design of several channels.

The main and backup servers & routers work simultaneously and synchronously, graphics is also backed up.

Graphics and Channel Branding

The SL NEO 3000 series servers allow to pass signals from its inputs directly to the outputs and perform "internal" program switching.

For instance, after playing back an ad-block the server can be configured to automatically switch the output from file content to the input's signal.

This function allows performing local insertions into the signal from a central station. The SL NEO media-server may trigger ad-block playback in manual mode as well as fully automatically by means of decoding DTMF cue tones, GPI in VBI commands and by video sample matching.

Being a part of broadcasting or live-production studio, the SL NEO server may be used as a multi-functional graphics design & playout station, which will tie graphics into the propagating video and format multi-layered compositions consisting of captions, scrolling text, video effects, on-screen graphics, logos, animated banners, live video fragments, Chroma Key, and DVE effects.

Each output (program) channel of SL NEO 3000 contains up to eight simultaneously functioning virtual channels for graphics output. Each channel contains its own playlist, with playing back graphic events.

Each event may contain a multi-layered combination (without limitation on the number of layers) of text/graphic events. Logos, captions, scrolling and crawling text are played back on dynamic backgrounds.

The content of scrolling text may change dynamically due to the reading of RSS information. Functions for the automatic parameterization of text objects contained in compositions have been implemented in SL NEO 3000 server line.

SL NEO 3000 servers allow using different options for visualization based on the dynamic reading of information from RSS resources or text files: SMS chats, weather and currency exchange panels etc. Visualization of various sensor indications (temperature, humidity, pressure, background radiation, etc.) is implemented through the technology of periodic reading of measurement results from text files at the required intervals.

Channel In A Box Based Broadcast Automation System Concept Diagram

SL NEO servers permit the full automation of graphics playout. Associating graphic events with time markers in events in the main playlist is implemented through the secondary events and special marker technology.

SL NEO graphics playout technology is designed for Branding, Promo, TV News, Weather Forecasts, Economic information, Music Channels, etc.

Real-time graphics for Channel Branding & Live Production

Real-Time Broadcast Graphics Servers

SL NEO 5000

As a part of the broadcasting or live-production studio, the SL NEO server may be used as a multi-functional graphics design & playout station, that associates graphics with the propagating video and format multi-layered compositions consisting of captions, scrolling text, video effects, on-screen graphics, logos, animated banners, live video fragments, Chroma Key, and 2D DVE effects.

Every output program signal (Fill) is accompanied by a key signal (Key). An audio signal may be presented in Fill outputs. The system inputs may be used either for the creation of 2D effects and live video compositions or for material recording, as it can be done with a normal video server.

Dynamic Compositions TechnologySL NEO 5000 server line maintains dynamic compositions technology, designed for Branding, Promo, TV News, Weather Forecasts, Economic information, Music Channels, etc. In addition to text and animation, compositions may contain 2D effects, elements of PIP, video, live sources from server inputs and audio track mixes. Functions for the automatic parameterization of text objects contained in compositions have been implemented.

Each output (program) channel of SL NEO 5000 contains up to eight simultaneously functioning virtual channels for graphics output. Each channel contains its own playlist whith graphics events. Each event may contain a multi-layered combination (without limitation on the number of layers) of text/graphic events.

RSS, visualization of sensor indicationsSL NEO 5000 servers allow using different options for visualization based on the dynamic reading of information from RSS resources or text files: SMS chats, weather and currency exchange panels etc. Visualization of various sensor indications (temperature, humidity, pressure, background radiation, etc.) is implemented through the technology of periodic reading of measurement results from text files at the required intervals. The limitations on sensor type and model are therefore removed.

TemplatesWhen formatting broadcast channels, real-time programs, and television news broadcasts, formatting templates are used. For this purpose, the general formatting design is generated, and the text data are entered themselves and loaded separately. This permits the text information to be “disconnected” from the graphics, so that the text can be replaced.

Logos, captions, scrolling and crawling text on dynamic backgroundsYou can create unlimited number of these objects, besides, upon generation of the format, they may be created free-form with any other graphic objects. In addition to text, images may be used as moving objects. The content of scrolling text may change dynamically due to the reading of RSS information.

TV Clock allows showing visual current time in the form of digital and analogue clocks (full or partial screen) of any design with sound. Collages may be created from “digital” and “analogue” clocks with animated backgrounds for several time zones, as well as direct and reverse counters.

Live VideoUsing live inputs as part of a design is an everyday task. SL NEO 5000 lets you apply live input sources to any object and animate the result in real-time, without the use of external scaler equipment.

The integrated real-time chroma keyer completes a very cost-effective set of tools for creating eye-catching virtual studio productions. Using the color-picker, you can simply select the color to be keyed before fine-tuning its parameters. Multiple chroma keyers can be used within a single scene.

Built-in Multi-Functional Graphics Editor

The client software package for 3000/5000 series servers contains a multi-functional graphics editor which permits the creation and editing of captions and graphic compositions.

All initial materials and work results are archived in the server array under the management of a database, which facilitates joint work by several users and instant broadcasting of the compositions created.

FontsSL NEO servers support work with any fonts and encoding accessible to Microsoft Windows, including Arabic fonts and movement of text from left to right.

FormatsThe servers support all widespread compression formats and file containers for graphics and audio/video files.

Software modules connection diagram

The very important feature of SL NEO 7000 server line is that when producing real-time materials and spots for television news broadcasts the servers’ options allow non-linear editing at network work stations with the use of low-resolution proxy copies, but with no need in copying media files to the editing stations and back to the server.

The created editing solution can be put on the air instantaneously from the server without file copying and rendering, by means of using access to the server archives and proxy copies.

The result of the edit is saved in the server’s database as a text XML description of the editing decision, and it is immediately accessible for playout.

If necessary, the result of the editing may be rendered in a media file and saved on the network client’s work station or on the server itself.

Built-in NLE Client Software

NLE Client is similar in many ways to the function selection of standard NLE editors, including Adobe Premiere.

It allows collecting complex, multi-track compositions on timeline, adding simple X/V or Mix/Wipe transitions and tying graphic layers (texts, on-screen graphics, backgrounds, videos with free-form transformations, and translucent animation), as well as changing to the broadcast speed and the implementation of Chroma Key and Voice Over functions.

SL NEO 7000 is a client/server system designed to be scalable. The system can have arbitrary numbers of servers and clients, the configuration of clients and servers is unconstrained allowing for flexibility in deployment and use.

Base Software Modules

Built-in MultiViewerBuilt-in MultiViewer support two modes of signal monitoring: the encoder may be equipped with additional HD-SDI or HDMI outputs which can be used for "multi-image" side-by-side monitoring of all server inputs on a HD-SDI monitor or flat panel with HDMI inputs. This technology can be used as an alternative to a set of control monitors when working with the server and allows to reduce costs on the server environment: signal distribution and conversion, monitors and so on. MultiViewer output supports up to 16 of input channels. The output resolution is user defined and can be both SD and HD.

The MultiScreen Client software from the SL NEO Client Software bundle allows a number of users to simultaneously monitor over network all the signal at the inputs and outputs of the encoder. The signals are displayed in small preview windows that are updated once per second taking virtually zero network traffic. When the user is interested in a particular channel he may select this channel for view in preview quality.

SL NEO Program Player is a server module that automatically conducts events contained in the playlist. The resulting “program” uncompressed stream is a composition consisting of several layers: The BG layer (which may be, for example, the signal from the server

input - from AV/TS Capture module); The main program layer, which covers the BG in accordance with the

playlist events. The main layer is generated by the full-screen file materials being played;

Graphic layers – clips or managing individual playlists (from 1 to 8). In each layer, the composition may, in turn, contain several layers. There may be a total number of several dozen layers. Management of the broadcast of “graphic” events may be connected to each other and to events in the main program playlist;

The logo layer, which may be run from any playlist.

During playout process, the SL NEO Program Player carries out routing in accordance with the events in the playlists, control the external SDI routers through SL NEO Device Server Software Module.

The rendering of all graphic layers takes place in the on-fly mode directly within the playout process.

Ingest Client manages the recording channels for one or more SL NEO servers according to schedules (rec lists). The user interface contains a certain number of windows which execute rec lists by number of recording channels. There is a set source for each recording channel and each event in the recording management window, this source may be either an external line or a videotape player. VTR devices are controlled using RS-422/IEEE1394 server ports. Batch capture mode is used when working with a VTR according to record-lists.

The SL NEO Recorder ingests materials on the server storage in accordance with the event order indicated in the rec-list being executed. Various operational modes are possible: recording from a server/network folder or recording with registration in the server database. Recording can take place simultaneously in one or more profiles, for example, Full Resolution XDCAM HD 422 + Full Resolution DV25 + Proxy.

Recording lists are either loaded from the media planning system or are prepared on the recording list editor, which is a part of the software package. There are functions for the insertion of individual lines or a rec list file during the recording schedule being implemented, as well as for setting the exact time at which the materials will be deleted. Constant verification of the presented materials listed in the lines of the rec lists in the server archive is conducted during the whole recording process.

Broadcast Client allows user to organize full control of an on-air channel. In the window there is a playlist that shows an assigned source for each broadcast event, either it is a server playout channel, or external line.

In accordance with the order of events indicated in the playlist being implemented, the SL NEO Program Player module sets up file materials for broadcast and generates the corresponding commands for the servers, it also gives all the necessary commands to the routers for source switching.

Broadcast playlists are either loaded from the media planning system or are prepared on the built-in playlist editor.

Broadcast Client implements several important functions: insertion of separate lines or playlist files in the schedule being implemented in the broadcasting process, constant verification of the presented materials listed in the playlists in the server storage.

Broadcast Client also contains a wide selection of functions for editing of a list and events being played, including emergency transfer to any event on the list, Hold, Alarm Clip, and much more.

Each major event in the playlist may be assigned so-called “subsidiary” or “secondary” events. A subordinate event may be, for example, a graphic composition with broadcast start linked to the main event start time. Graphics and captions may be generated by the server itself or by a separate graphics station.

The number of Broadcast windows is unlimited and is set by the user in the configuration process according to the number of playout channels.

Media Client

Media Client is a module for digital assets management in the SL NEO Server storages. Media Client displays the content of the storages for each server that has a network connection. There are displayed the following attributes of the material: an icon with the beginning TC in accordance with the IN marker, the name of the material, duration, commentary, source name, creation date, and date and time of automatic deletion. Processes have been implemented for the addition (import) of media files, search, filtration, “lifetime” settings, and export materials such as graphics, animation, audio and video materials, graphic compositions made using Graphics Client and XML clips, or as the result of editing in NLE Client. Media data management also includes services for the management of the list of import and export media data tasks.

Working with materials in Media Client, users can undertake operations involving audio and video sequences: change the aspect ratio and resolution, turn audio channels on/off, change or normalize the sound level with the goal of implementing parameters for materials with unified corporate standards before broadcast, if necessary.

Media data management on SL NEO servers is implemented in the form of a virtual file system. In combination with a user-friendly graphic interface, it permits the user to find the necessary material quickly, view it in a separate window as a proxy or with full resolution, mark the necessary fragments, save them, export them, edit the parameters, etc.

Graphics Client is a multi-functional graphics editor that permits the creation and editing of captions and graphic compositions. All initial materials for and results of work, as a rule, are archived in the server storage, which facilitates joint network operations by several users and instant broadcasting of created compositions. The SL NEO server does the rendering in online mode directly during the broadcast process.

Graphics Client permits operations with static graphics files, as well as 32-bit video. The composition may contain sound; the relationships between the sound levels may be set for every layer.

Graphics Client also contains an exhaustive collection of instruments for the fast creation of graphics with 2D DVE effects and titles, including “drums”, scrolling titles, teletype, TV clocks, and display of data from RSS sources. For all types of captions, marking of the original texts may be marked with tags that permit an automatic color change of the text and the background, as well as the insertion of an image. It contains 2D animation management functions for key points for each object.

multi-screen mode with the possibility of full-screen viewing of one selected channel online with audio. Both the server itself and some network work stations may be controlled simultaneously.

Even if there is no recording on a disk at the moment, the SL NEO Recorder module facilitates constant encoding and low-speed streaming to the network of signals entering the server inputs.

The Multi-Viewer client application sends queries to servers, accepts flows from the SL NEO Recorder, and displays them on the monitor of a client PC in the form of small preview windows that change their image once per second.

During playout, the SL NEO Player modules also generates a low-speed stream in the network for each broadcast channel. Multi-Viewer works in the same way with playout channels as it does with recording channels, and forms the corresponding preview windows.

If the user wishes, any of the preview windows may be expanded to fill the entire screen and switched to online viewing mode. This technology was developed for user viewing of all input and output channels directly on their work PCs, and permits them, in many cases, to do without cumbersome racks with many monitors, plasma panels, and multi-screen processors.

To prevent overloading the network, Multi-Viewer Client uses proxy profiles with a speed of no more than 1 Mbit/s.

Multi-Viewer Client

NLE Client

The very important feature of SL NEO server line is that when producing live materials and spots for television news broadcasts, the servers’ options allow non-linear editing at network work stations with the use of low-resolution proxy copies, but with no need in copying media files to the editing stations and back to the server.

The created editing solution can be put on the air instantaneously from the server without file copying and rendering, by means of using access to the server archives and proxy copies.

The result of the edit is saved in the server’s database as a text XML description of the editing decision, and it is immediately accessible for broadcast.

NLE Client is similar in many ways to the function selection of standard NLE editors, it allows collecting complex, multi-track compositions on timeline, adding simple X/V or Mix/Wipe transitions and tying graphic layers (texts, on-screen graphics, backgrounds, videos with free-form transformations, and translucent animation), as well as changing to the broadcast speed and the implementation of Chroma Key and Voice Over functions.

Routing Client

The Multi-Viewer Client provides multi - screen control of input and output streams of all SL NEO servers in the local network. This permits the facilitation of visual control on workstations of all inputs and signals being generated in

Routing Client is a client application designated for manual remote control of Audio/Video or SD-HD SDI Routers of any dimension, as well as for management interface switching.

Routing Client has an intuitively understandable graphic interface and permits users to make switching at their work stations in real time, observe the condition of the commutation fields, preserve the condition of commutation layers and load them in the future.

The application is universal and allows operations to be conducted with all series of SL NEO servers, in which the SL NEO Device Server module is activated.

Multi-Channel Playout with Automated Source Switching

4x ch. Broadcast Automation System Concept Diagram

Server - Client TechnologyThe main advantage of SL NEO series is the possibility to combine traditional broadcast technologies with new Channel-In-A-Box technology by supporting the most popular Third-party devices, such as: routers, switchers and VTRs.

Modular architecture and distributed nature of the SL NEO software allows user to find the optimal balance of the number of server systems and functions performed for any workflow and budget.

The concept of the SL NEO media platform’s construction presupposes combined operations on the server platform by basic program components that facilitate the required server functionality.

The number and settings of each server module may differ depending on the SL NEO server series and model. SL NEO server software facilitates the functioning of the server platform: management of data archives, recording and playback operations, file coding and decoding, online calculation with graphics tie-in, and device management.

Client software facilitates the transfer of server requests and the receipt of its replies, due to which users’ commands may successfully implement the management of content, one or several broadcast channels, and recording channels.

The server-client technology used at SL NEO fundamentally differs from Remote Desktop technology, and unlike that technology, it is capable of facilitating cooperative operations of a user group after dividing the corresponding rights and roles between them: ingest (materials recording and capture), content management, caption and graphics creation, real-time editing, search, viewing, layout, pre-broadcast material preparation, and broadcast management.

4 Ch. Broadcast Automation System Concept Diagram Example

Multi-Channel Ingest & Playout with Automated Source Switching

"Internal" Switching Mode.

As long as the “Channel-in-a-Box” technology’s popularity grows, servers begin to carry out more and more functions, what simplifies the scheme of broadcast system creating.

SL NEO server is now not only a source, it is capable to implement internal clean switching of the "not-in-sync" input signals with those ones that are generated during files playback, according to the play-lists. This server also creates graphic design of several channels.

The main advantage of this approach is essential money saving, since there are no requirements about genlock of all external sources with REF: only one server implements the frame synchronizing function by jointless "clean" switching of the input signals with playback files. This scheme requires no sync generators, DSK/LOGO modules or extra graphic design servers.

The main and backup servers & routers work simultaneously and synchronously, graphics is also backed up. Routing switchers implement only preliminary switching to server inputs and switching to server rec-channels (automatically or manually).

Automated Local Insertions

The SL NEO 3000 series servers allow user to pass signals from its inputs directly to the outputs and perform "internal" program switching. For instance, after playing back an ad-block the server can be configured to automatically switch the output from file content to the input's AV signal. This function allows performing local insertions into the AV signal from a central station. The SL NEO media-server may trigger ad-block playback in manual mode as well as fully automatically by means of decoding DTMF cue tones, GPI in VBI commands and by video sample matching.

Graphics and Channel Branding

Dynamic compositions technology is designed for Branding, Promo, TV News, Weather Forecasts, Economic information, Music Channels, etc. In addition to text and animation, compositions may contain 2D effects, elements of PIP, video, and live sources from server inputs, and audio track mixes.

Functions for the automatic parameterization of text objects contained in compositions have been implemented in SL NEO 3000 server line. A flash video shows an example of the composition using PIP and simple captions. Animation may be played in the form of a file chain or from avi/mov files from alpha-channel.

Logos, captions, scrolling and crawling text are played back on dynamic backgrounds. Number of these objects is unlimited; upon generation of the format, they may be combined free-form with any other graphic objects. In addition to text, images may be used as moving objects. The content of scrolling text may change dynamically due to the reading of RSS information.
