MSN Portfolio Instructions

You will compile a portfolio in Blackboard for your MSN program of study. The portfolio will be an ongoing assignment that will be reviewed in NUR 5523 Master’s Project & Practicum. Master’s Project & Practicum is a reflective course completed in your final semester where you demonstrate mastery of the MSN program outcomes. Please read all instructions carefully before attempting to create your portfolio. First, you will Create your MSN Portfolio (typically) in NUR 5033 Concepts of Advanced Practice Nursing. Then, you will Edit your portfolio by adding a page for each course from your program of study. Finally, you will Add Artifacts (required assignments) each time you complete a listed course. You will refer back to the Edit and/or Add Artifacts section of the instructions as you complete your courses.

Create 1. Click the Portfolio link on the left side navigation in your course on Blackboard. 2. Click the Portfolios Homepage link. CAUTION: You may have multiple portfolios in Blackboard if you completed a previous degree program with SBU that also required a portfolio. If you have already created an MSN Portfolio and you are ready to Add Artifacts…click the link to skip to that section. If you have not created an MSN Portfolio… 3. Click the Create Portfolio button.

a. Type a title: ‘Your First Name + Your Last Name’s MSN Portfolio’. Example Title: Peggy Walden’s MSN Portfolio. b. Ignore the Select Portfolio Template. Leave Description text box empty and leave the boxes checked next to Available and Comments are Private. c. Click Submit to create your portfolio. d. Ignore the Portfolio Tour by clicking the ‘No thanks, I’ll explore on my own’ link.

Your portfolio should look similar to the picture below. Using the picture for reference, you will continue editing your portfolio.

Edit Header: The information you add to the header box will be visible from every page of your portfolio.

a. Click the Pencil button next to the ‘Click here to add a header to your portfolio’ box. b. Type in the header box: ‘First Name + Last Name’s MSN Portfolio’. Please also include your credentials such as RN for Registered Nurse. c. Click Save.

Pages: You will add a new page for each course in your program and retitle that page accordingly.

a. Click on Page 1 from the left side page listing to activate the edit mode as pictured below. The blue highlight on Page 1 indicates it is activated for editing. b. Type the title: ‘Portfolio Home Page’ as pictured below. c. Click Save. Please keep the Portfolio Home Page at the top of your page list. Refer to step f to move or reorder your pages, if needed. d. Click the left side Plus Sign button to add a new page for each course listed below in your program of study. e. Retitle each page with a course number and course title until every course listed below has a unique page. f. As you add pages, you may need to move or reorder pages by clicking on the up/down arrows as pictured below.

Edit Sections: You will edit ‘Section 1’ on the Portfolio Home Page and retitle the section accordingly. a. Click on ‘Section 1’ (under Portfolio Home Page) from the left side page listing to activate the edit mode for that section as pictured below. b. Click on the ‘Section 1’ title box and retitle that section to ‘Purpose’ as pictured below.

c. Copy and paste the following description into the textbox that appears below the section title: The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase the work that I have completed during my educational program. The portfolio supports my professional development, documents my clinical competence, and maps course assignments to my program outcomes. The content or artifacts of the portfolio include papers, presentations, and other documents that provide evidence of my progress throughout the program. TIP: Use the Remove Formatting button on the text editor toolbar to clean up the pasted text, if needed. d. Click Save.

Add Sections: You will now add two new sections below the ‘Purpose’ section on the Portfolio Home Page and retitle the sections accordingly.

a. Click the Plus Sign below the ‘Purpose’ section to create a new section. The lower Plus Sign is circled in red in the above picture. b. Retitle the new section as ‘Master of Science in Nursing Program Level Student Outcomes’. c. All MSN students will copy and paste the following five Program Level Student Learning Outcomes into the textbox that appears below the section title: PLSLO 1: Integrate skills in critical thinking, information management, and systematic inquiry into the advanced nursing practice role. (Clinical Judgment) PLSLO 2: Utilize advanced communication processes to influence health care, health care policy, and advanced professional nursing practice. (Communication) PLSLO 3: Synthesize knowledge from concepts, theories, principles and research in nursing in the planning and delivery of holistic evidence based health care that is responsive to changing needs and societal trends for a multicultural population. (Evidence-Based Practice)

PLSLO 4: Assume leadership, responsibility and accountability for value based decision-making in the advanced practice role. (Professionalism) PLSLO 5: Develop a conscious application and assimilation of the principles of Christian discipleship in the implementation of the advanced practice role. (Christian Discipleship) TIP: Use the Remove Formatting button on the text editor toolbar to clean up the pasted text, if needed. d. Click Save. Add another section: a. Click the Plus Sign below the ‘Master of Science in Nursing Program Level Student Outcomes’ section to create a new section. b. Retitle the new section as: If Nursing Education student, retitle as ‘Nursing Education Student Learning Outcomes’.

If Nursing Administration student, retitle as ‘Nursing Administration Student Learning Outcomes’. c. Copy and paste the following five Student Learning Outcomes into the textbox that appears below the section title: If Nursing Education student:

Utilize critical thinking skills to integrate education theories, technology, and professional standards into the design, implementation and evaluation of curriculum. (Clinical Judgment)

Develop research based educational strategies for multicultural diverse students. (Communication)

Determine interventions to evaluate learning and curricular outcomes in nursing education. (Evidence-Based Practice)

Analyze ethical, political, organizational, cultural, technological, and professional influences on nursing education. (Professionalism)

Integrate the principles of Christian discipleship and a Christian worldview into the development of nursing education systems. (Christian Discipleship)

If Nursing Administration student:

Utilize critical thinking skills to determine effective strategies that stimulate change within nursing that lead to a more effective management of health care delivery systems. (Clinical Judgment)

Demonstrate leadership qualities and administrative expertise in making value based accountable decisions in the management, coordination, and delivery of nursing care. (Communication)

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams using advance communication to promote health care systems growth and effectiveness for diverse populations. (Evidence-Based Practice)

Apply the principles of nursing and leadership theories, economic and finance principles, business management practices, and cultural competency to the delivery of health care. (Professionalism)

Integrate the principles of Christian discipleship and a Christian worldview into the management of personnel, health care resources, and access to care and attention to vulnerable populations. (Christian Discipleship)

From top to bottom, the left side page listing should be arranged as pictured.

Top Page – Portfolio Home Page then three sections that fall under the top page. 1st Section – Purpose 2nd Section – Master of Science in Nursing Program Level Student Outcomes 3rd Section – Nursing Administration Student Learning Outcomes

Course Page – There should be ONE page for every course listed above in your program of study. Section 1 – Every Course Page should have ONE section titled ‘Section 1’.

TIP: Move or reorder Pages or Sections by clicking on the up/down arrows next to each Page or Section title as pictured. You can also move a Section to appear under a different Page, if needed. If finished editing your portfolio, click the Done Editing button to return to the My Portfolios page. To continue modifying the layout and color scheme of your portfolio, continue to the next section of the instructions.

Preview and Customize 1. Click the Preview and Customize button in the upper right corner to view your portfolio as a webpage. NOTE: A portfolio is a collection of Pages (webpages) used to display your best course work in a digital format. The Preview and Customize button allows you to view your portfolio as it will appear to your instructors for grading. Please make sure that your portfolio views in an organized and professional manner. 2. Click the Customize Style button to modify the default appearance of your portfolio. NOTE: Only Pages appear as links in the Preview and Customize view as pictured below. Click each Page link to view the Sections for that Page.

3. Click the Layout drop-down menu to modify where the Page links appear (left, right, top). Wait a few seconds to allow the web browser to refresh the display. 4. Click the Color drop-down menu to modify the color scheme of your portfolio. Wait a few seconds to allow the web browser to refresh the display. 5. Once you are satisfied with both the layout and the color scheme, click through every Page link and view all sections to make sure your portfolio displays all information requested. Ask yourself, “Does my portfolio look organized and professional?”

6. Click Save to save the layout and color settings. 7. Click Close to back out of the preview and customize mode. 8. If finished editing your portfolio, click the Done Editing button to return to the My Portfolios screen.

Add Artifacts You will add required assignments as artifacts to each of the Course Pages in your portfolio. 1. Click the Portfolio / Portfolio Homepage link to access your portfolio. CAUTION: If your My Portfolios area does not look like the picture below, click the ‘View As Cards’ button to change how your portfolio(s) display. You may have multiple portfolios for multiple programs of study, please select the desired portfolio.

2. Click the Edit link of the desired portfolio to enter the edit mode. 3. Find the desired Course Page on the left side page listing.

4. Click the desired Course Page on the left side page listing to activate the edit mode. NUR 5033 has been selected in the picture below as an example. CAUTION: If the desired Course page is not in the left side page listing, you will need to add a new page. Refer to the Edit section of this document, if needed. NOTE: Recall that your top page on the left side page listing should be the Portfolio Home Page, then three sections under the Portfolio Home Page, and finally there should be a Course Page with a Section 1 for every course listed in your program of study. TIP: If you have any extraneous Pages or Sections, use the Delete Page/Section trashcan button to delete any unused pages or sections from your portfolio.

5. Click the Add Artifact button in Section 1 of the desired Course Page. 6. Click the Add Personal Artifact button. 7. Please include the following information:

Title your Artifact: Type the title of the assignment as it is listed in the Portfolio Submission instructions of the desired course.

Description: This field is optional and may be left blank.

Content: This field will be used to document the following circumstances. o Video Assignments: Copy and paste the hyperlink to a video assignment in the textbox such as from YouTube or other streaming media. o Transferred Course: If you did not take a course at SBU, please type in the textbox ‘I am a transfer student and did not complete this course at SBU.’ o Different Required Assignments: If the required assignment listed in the Portfolio Submission instructions was not an assignment when you

completed the course, please type in the textbox ‘I completed a different assignment for this course.’

Attach File: Click the Browse My Computer button to select the required assignment file for upload into your portfolio on Blackboard. Be aware of large files such as PPTs with lots of images that may exceed the file size limit. If you experience technical issues, please contact the SBU Help Desk at 417-328-1702 for assistance during normal business hours Monday - Friday.

Click the Submit button. 8. Repeat steps 5 – 7 until all required assignments have been loaded to the desired Course Page. 9. Click the Preview and Customize button to view your Portfolio as a webpage to check for errors. Does it look organized in a professional manner? 10. Click the Done Editing button when finished. Once all required assignments have been loaded to the Course Page, you may now complete the Portfolio Submission portion of the course assignment.
