Hardware Setup

The mainboard supports AMD® Athlon64 / Athlon64x2 / Sempron AM2 processors. Themainboard uses a CPU socket called Socket AM2 (940-pin) for easy CPU installation.W hen you are installing the CPU, make sure the CPU has a heat sink and acooling fan attached on the top to prevent overheating. If you do not have theheat sink and cooling fan, contact your dealer to purchase and install them beforeturning on the computer.For the latest information about CPU, please visithttp://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=cpuform

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

Important

1. Overheating will seriously damage the CPU and system. Always makesure the cooling fan can work properly to protect the CPU from overheating.

2. Make sure that you apply an even layer of heat sink paste (or thermal tape)between the CPU and the heatsink to enhance heat dissipation.

3. While replacing the CPU, always turn off the ATX power supply or unplugthe power supply’s power cord from the grounded outlet first to ensure thesafety of CPU.

CPU Installation Procedures for Socket AM2

1. Please turn off the power andunplug the power cord beforeinstalling the CPU.

2. Pull the lever s ideways awayfrom the socket. Make sure toraise the lever up to a 90-de-gree angle.

3. Look for the gold arrow of theCPU. The gold arrow shouldpoint as shown in the picture.The CPU can only fit in the cor-rect orientation.

4. If the CPU is correctly installed,the pins should be completelyembedded into the socket andcan not be seen. Please notethat any violation of the correctinstal lat ion procedures maycause permanent damages toyour mainboard.

5. Press the CPU down firmly intothe socket and close the lever.As the CPU is likely to move whilethe lever is being closed, al-ways close the lever with yourfingers pressing tightly on top ofthe CPU to make sure the CPU isproperly and completely embed-ded into the socket.

Installing AMD Socket AM2 CPU Cooler SetW hen you are installing the CPU, make sure the CPU has a heat sink and acooling fan attached on the top to prevent overheating. If you do not have theheat sink and cooling fan, contact your dealer to purchase and install them beforeturning on the computer.

Mainboard photos shown in this section are for demonstration of the coolerinstallation for Socket AM2 CPUs only. The appearance of your mainboardmay vary depending on the model you purchase.

2. Then press down the other end ofthe clip to fasten the cooling set onthe top of the retention mechanism.Locate the Fix Lever and lift up it .

1. Position the cooling set onto the re-tention mechanism.Hook one end of the clip to hookfirst.

3. Fasten down the lever. 4. Attach the CPU Fan cable to the CPUfan connector on the mainboard.

* While disconnecting the Safety Hook from the fixed bolt, it is necessary tokeep an eye on your fingers, because once the Safety Hook is disconnectedfrom the fixed bolt, the fixed lever will spring back instantly.

Installing Memory Modules1. The memory module has only one notch on the center and will only fit in the right

orientation.2. Insert the memory module vertically into the DIMM slot. Then push it in until the

golden finger on the memory module is deeply inserted in the DIMM slot.

3. The plastic clip at each side of the DIMM slot will automatically close.

Important

You can barely see the golden finger if the memory module is properly insertedin the DIMM slot.

Volt Notch

Important

- DDR2 memory modules are not interchangeable with DDR and the DDR2standard is not backwards compatible. You should always install DDR2memory modules in the DDR2 DIMM slots.

- In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules of thesame type and density in different channel DIMM slots.

- To enable successful system boot-up, always insert the memory modulesinto the DIMM1 first.

- Due to the chipset resource deployment, the system density will only bedetected up to 7+GB (not full 8GB) when each DIMM is installed with a 2GBmemory module.

1. Maker sure that all the connectors are connected to proper ATX power sup-plies to ensure stable operation of the mainboard.

2. Power supply of 350 watts (and above) is highly recommended for systemstability.

ATX 24-Pin Power Connector: ATX1This connector allows you to connect an ATX 24-pin power supply.To connect the ATX 24-pin power supply, make sure the plug of thepower supply is inserted in the proper orientation and the pins arealigned. Then push down the power supply firmly into the connector.You may use the 20-pin ATX power supply as you like. If you’d liketo use the 20-pin ATX power supply, please plug your power sup-ply along with pin 1 & pin 13 (refer to the image at the right hand).There is also a foolproof design on pin 11, 12, 23 & 24 to avoidwrong installation.

Mouse/KeyboardThe standard PS/2® mouse/keyboard DIN connector is for a PS/2® mouse/keyboard.

HDMI PortThe High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is an all-digital audio/video interfacecapable of transmitting uncompressed streams. HDMI supports all TV format, includ-ing standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on asingle cable.

VGA PortThe DB15-pin female connector is provided for monitor.

DVI PortThe DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connector allows you to connect a LCD monitor. Itprovides a high-speed digital interconnection between the computer and its displaydevice. To connect an LCD monitor, simply plug your monitor cable into the DVIconnector, and make sure that the other end of the cable is properly connected toyour monitor (refer to your monitor manual for more information.)

1394 Port (optional)The IEEE1394 port on the back panel provides connection to IEEE1394 devices.

LANThe standard RJ-45 jack is for connectionto single Local Area Network (LAN). Youcan connect a network cable to it.

USB PortThe USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is for attaching USB devices such as keyboard,mouse, or other USB-compatible devices.

Audio PortsThese audio connectors are used for audio devices. You can differentiate the colorof the audio jacks for different audio sound effects.

Line-In (Blue) - Line In, is used for external CD player, tapeplayer or other audio devices.

Line-Out (Green) - Line Out, is a connector for speakers or headphones. Mic (Pink) - Mic, is a connector for microphones. RS-Out (Black) - Rear-Surround Out in 4/ 5.1/ 7.1 channel mode. Entering Setup

Important

1. The items under each BIOS category described in this chapter are undercontinuous update for better system performance. Therefore, the descrip-tion may be slightly different from the latest BIOS and should be held forreference only.

2. Upon boot-up, the 1st line appearing after the memory count is the BIOSversion. It is usually in the format:

A7368AMS V1.0 041607 where:

1st digit refers to BIOS maker as A = AMI, W = AWARD, and P =PHOENIX.2nd - 5th digit refers to the model number.6th digit refers to the chipset as I = Intel, N = nVidia, and A = AMD.7th - 8th digit refers to the customer as MS = all standard customers.V1.1 refers to the BIOS version.122506 refers to the date this BIOS was released.

Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On Self Test) process.When the message below appears on the screen, press <DEL> key to enter Setup.

Press DEL to enter SETUP

If the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to enter Setup,restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the RESET button. You mayalso restart the system by simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys.

Getting HelpAfter entering the Setup menu, the first menu you will see is the Main Menu.

Main MenuThe main menu lists the setup functions you can make changes to. You can use thearrow keys ( ↑↓ ) to select the item. The on-line description of the highlighted setupfunction is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Sub-MenuIf you find a right pointer symbol (as shown in the rightview) appears to the left of certain fields that means asub-menu can be launched from this field. A sub-menucontains additional options for a field parameter. Youcan use arrow keys ( ↑↓ ) to highlight the field andpress <Enter> to call up the sub-menu. Then you canuse the control keys to enter values and move fromfield to field within a sub-menu. If you want to return tothe main menu, just press the <Esc >.

General Help <F1>The BIOS setup program provides a General Help screen. You can call up this screenfrom any menu by simply pressing <F1>. The Help screen lists the appropriate keysto use and the possible selections for the highlighted item. Press <Esc> to exit theHelp screen.

LBA/Large ModeThis item allows you to enable or disable the LBA (Logical Block Address, thelogical block size in hard disk) mode.

DMA ModeThis item allows you to enable or disable the DMA (Direct Memory Access) mode.

Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T.This allows you to activate the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis & ReportingTechnology) capability for the hard disks. S.M.A.R.T is a utility that monitors yourdisk status to predict hard disk failure. This gives you an opportunity to movedata from a hard disk that is going to fail to a safe place before the hard diskbecomes off line.

Full Screen LOGO DisplayThis item enables you to show the company logo on the bootup screen. Settings are:

[Enabled] Shows a still image (logo) on the full screen at boot.[Disabled] Shows the POST messages at boot.

Quick BootingSetting the item to [Enabled] allows the system to boot within 5 seconds since it willskip some check items.

Boot Up Num-Lock LEDThis setting is to set the Num Lock status when the system is powered on. Setting to[ON] will turn on the Num Lock key when the system is powered on. Setting to [OFF]will allow users to use the arrow keys on the numeric keypad.

Boot Sector ProtectionThis function protects the BIOS from accidental corruption by unauthorized users orcomputer viruses. When enabled, the BIOS’ data cannot be changed when attempt-ing to update the BIOS with a Flash utility. To successfully update the BIOS, you’llneed to disable this Flash BIOS Protection function.You should enable this function at all times. The only time when you need to disableit is when you want to update the BIOS. After updating the BIOS, you should immedi-ately re-enable it to protect it against viruses.

IOAPIC FunctionThis field is used to enable or disable the APIC (Advanced Programmable InterruptController). Due to compliance with PC2001 design guide, the system is able to run inAPIC mode. Enabling APIC mode will expand available IRQ resources for the system.

MPS Table VersionThis field allows you to select which MPS (Multi-Processor Specification) version tobe used for the operating system. You need to select the MPS version supported byyour operating system. To find out which version to use, consult the vendor of youroperating system.

HPETThe HPET (High Precision Event Timers) is a component that is part of the chipset.You can to enable it, and will provide you with the means to get to it via thevarious ACPI methods.

ACPI FunctionThis item is to activate the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power ManagementInterface) Function. If your operating system is ACPI-aware, such as Windows 2000/XP, select [Enabled].

ACPI Standby StateThis item specif ies the power saving modes for ACPI function. If your operatingsystem supports ACPI, such as Windows 2000/ XP , you can choose to enter theStandby mode in S1(POS) or S3(STR) fashion through the setting of this field. Set-tings are:

[S1/POS] The S1 sleep mode is a low power state. In this state, nosystem context is lost (CPU or chipset) and hardware main-tains all system context.

[S3/STR] The S3 sleep mode is a lower power state where the information of system configuration and open applications/filesis saved to main memory that remains powered while mostother hardware components turn off to save energy. Theinformation stored in memory will be used to restore the sys-tem when a “wake up” event occurs.

S3-related functions described in this section are available only when yourBIOS supports S3 sleep mode.

Power Button FunctionThis feature allows users to configure the Power Button function. Settings are:

[Power Off] The power button functions as a normal power-on/-off button.[Suspend] When you press the power button, the computer enters the

suspend/sleep mode, but if the button is pressed for morethan four seconds, the computer is turned off.

Restore On AC Power LossThis setting specif ies whether your system will reboot after a power failure orinterrupt occurs. Available settings are:

IRQ Resource SetupPress <Enter> to enter the sub-menu and the following screen appears.

IRQ 3/4/5/7/9/10/11/14/15These items specify the bus where the specified IRQ line is used.The settings determine if AMIBIOS should remove an IRQ from the pool of avail-able IRQs passed to devices that are configurable by the system BIOS. Theavailable IRQ pool is determined by reading the ESCD NVRAM. If more IRQs mustbe removed from the IRQ pool, the end user can use these settings to reservethe IRQ by assigning an [Reserved] setting to it. Onboard I/O is configured byAMIBIOS. All IRQs used by onboard I/O are configured as [Available]. If all IRQsare set to [Reserved], and IRQ 14/15 are allocated to the onboard PCI IDE, IRQ 9will still be available for PCI and PnP devices.

Important

IRQ (Interrupt Request) lines are system resources allocated to I/O devices.When an I/O device needs to gain attention of the operating system, it sig-nals this by causing an IRQ to occur. After receiving the signal, when theoperating system is ready, the system will interrupt itself and perform theservice required by the I/O device.

CPU Smart FAN TargetThe mainboard provides the Smart Fan function which can control the CPU fan speedautomatically depending on the current temperature to keep it within a specific range.You can select a fan target value here. DRAM TimingThe value in this f ield depends on performance parameters of the installedmemory chips (DRAM). Do not change the value from the factory setting unlessyou install new memory that has a different performance rating than the originalDRAMs.

CAS# Latency (Tcl)When the DRAM Timing is set to [Manual], the field is adjustable. This controlsthe CAS latency, which determines the timing delay (in clock cycles) beforeSDRAM starts a read command after receiving it. Smaller clocks increase sys-tem performance while bigger clocks provide more stable system performance.

Min RAS# Active Time (Tras)When the DRAM Timing is set to [Manual], the field is adjustable. This settingdetermines the time RAS takes to read from and write to a memory cell.

RAS# Precharge Time (Trp)When the DRAM Timing is set to [Manual], this field is adjustable. This settingcontrols the number of cycles for Row Address Strobe (RAS) to be allowed toprecharge. If insuff icient time is allowed for the RAS to accumulate its chargebefore DRAM refresh, refresh may be incomplete and DRAM may fail to retaindata. This item applies only when synchronous DRAM is installed in the system.

RAS# to CAS# Delay (Trcd)When the DRAM Timing is set to [Manual], this f ield is adjustable. This fieldallows you to set the number of cycles for a timing delay between the CAS andRAS strobe signals, used when DRAM is written to, read from or refreshed.Fast speed offers faster performance while slow speed offers more stableperformance.

FSB/Memory RatioThis setting control the ratio of CPU FSB / DRAM Clock Ratio to enable the CPU &DRAM to run at different frequency combinations. Please note that the setting optionsvary according to the CPU FSB Clock preset.

Adjusted DDR Memory FrequencyIt shows the adjusted DDR memory frequency. Read only.

Auto Disable PCI FrequencyWhen set to [Enabled], the system will remove (turn off) clocks from any empty PCIslots to minimize the electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Processor/ Memory Voltage (V)These items allow you to adjust the processor/ memory voltage. Adjusting the voltagecan increase the speed. Any changes made to this setting may cause a stabilityissue, so changing the voltage for long-term purpose is NOT recommended.

Spread SpectrumWhen the motherboard’s clock generator pulses, the extreme values (spikes) of thepulses creates EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). The Spread Spectrum functionreduces the EMI generated by modulating the pulses so that the spikes of the pulsesare reduced to flatter curves. If you do not have any EMI issue, leave the setting atDisabled for optimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued by EMI,set to Enabled for EMI reduction. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum if you areoverclocking because even a slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clockspeed which may just cause your overclocked processore to lock up.

Important

1. If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the setting at [Disabled] foroptimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued by EMI,select the value of Spread Spectrum for EMI reduction.

2. The greater the Spread Spectrum value is, the greater the EMI is reduced,and the system will become less stable. For the most suitable SpreadSpectrum value, please consult your local EMI regulation.

3. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum if you are overclocking becauseeven a slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clock speed whichmay just cause your overclocked processor to lock up.

BIOS Setting Password

When you select this function, a message as below will appear on the screen:

Type the password, up to six characters in length, and press <Enter>. The passwordtyped now will replace any previously set password from CMOS memory. You willbe prompted to confirm the password. Retype the password and press <Enter>. Youmay also press <Esc> to abort the selection and not enter a password.To clear a set password, just press <Enter> when you are prompted to enter thepassword. A message will show up confirming the password will be disabled. Oncethe password is disabled, the system will boot and you can enter Setup withoutentering any password.When a password has been set, you will be prompted to enter it every time you tryto enter Setup. This prevents an unauthorized person from changing any part of yoursystem configuration.

Multi-Stream FunctionALC888 supports an outstanding feature called Multi-Stream, which means you mayplay different audio sources simultaneously and let them output respectively from theindicated real panel or front panel. This feature is very helpful when 2 people areusing the same computer together for different purposes.

Click the button and the Mixer ToolBox menu will appear. Then check the Enableplayback multi-streaming and click OK to save the setup.

AMD south bridge SB600 integrate SATA host control-ler that supports four SATAII ports and RAID functionfor performance and reliability.SATA RAID provides support for RAID 0 (Striping), RAID1 (Mirroring), RAID 0+1 (Striping & Mirroring). RAID 0greatly improves hard d isk I/O performance byconcurrently striping data across multiple drives. RAID1 makes sure data is not lost if a drive fails as data issimultaneously written to two drives. Drives configuredfor RAID Striping are said to form a RAID 0 set, whiledrives configured for RAID Mirroring are said to form aRAID 1 set. RAID Configuration

Creating and deleting RAID set and performing other RAID setting up operations aredone in the RAID BIOS. During bootup, a screen similar to the one below will appearfor about few seconds. Press <Ctrl-F> to enter the FastBuild utility.

The Fast Build Utility menu screen will appear. The Main Menu is used to choose theoperation to be performed.

Important

Be sure to set the OnChip SATA Type to “RAID” in BIOS (the path is :Integrated Peripherals => IDE Devices Configuration => OnChip SATAType) before configuring the RAID BIOS.

Define LD (Creating RAID)

The selection of the RAID configuration should be based upon factors includingperformance, data security, and the number of drives available. It is best to carefullyconsider the long-term role of the system and plan the data storage strategy. RAIDsets can be created either automatically, or to allow the greatest flexibility, manually.

1. Press 2 on the Main Menu screen to enter the Define LD Menu.2. Press the arrow keys to highlight an logical drive number you want to define

and press Enter to select it.

4. On the Drives Assignments window, use the arrow key to choose the harddrives which you want to make part of the LD, use the space key to changethe assignment to “Y”. Then press [Ctrl+Y] to save the configuration.

5. A message will show up on the bottom, press any key to save the configurationor press [Ctrl-Y] to allocate the RAID capacity manually.

6. The LD creation is done, the screen shows the LD information as below.

1. The default capacity is the full capacity of the selected hard drives.2. If you allocate the first LD capacity manually, you can create second LD with remaining capacity of the selected hard drives.

Installing the RAID Driver (for bootable RAID Array)1. After you complete the RAID BIOS setup, boot from the Windows CD, and the

Windows XP Setup program starts.2. Press F6 and wait for the W indows Setup screen to appear.

4. For Windows Vista:During the Operating system installation, after selecting the location to installVista click on “Load Driver” button to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.

5. When prompted, insert the floppy disk or media (Floppy, CD/DVD Or USB) andpress Enter.

6. You should be shown a list of available SCSI Adapters.7. Select “AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller -x86 platform” when the

system is 32-bit version or “AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller -x64platform” when the system is 64-bit version and then press ENTER.

8. The next screen should confirm that you have selected the AMD RAID controller.Press ENTER again to continue.

9. You have successfully installed the AMD RAID driver, and Windows setup shouldcontinue.

10. Leave the disk in the floppy drive until the system reboots itself. Windows setupwill need to copy the files from the floppy again after the RAID volume is formatted,and Windows setup starts copying files.

DOT (Dynamic Over Clocking)

Dynamic Overclocking Technology is an automatic overclocking function, included inthe MSITM’s newly developed Dual CoreCenter Technology. It is designed to detect theloading of CPU/ GPU while running programs, and to over-clock automatically. Whenthe motherboard detects that the loading of CPU is exceed the default threshold for atime, it will speed up the CPU and fan automatically to make the system run smootherand faster. When the graphics card detects that the loading of GPU is exceed thedefault threshold for a time, it will speed up the GPU, memory, fan and voltageautomatically to make the system run smoother and faster. When the CPU/ GPU istemporarily suspending or staying in low loading balance, it will restore the defaultsettings instead. Usually the Dynamic Overclocking Technology will be powered onlywhen users' PC runs huge amount of data, like 3D games or video process, and themotherboard/ graphicd card need to be boosted up to enhance the overall performance.There will be several selections when you click the DOT rate button (include increaserate and decrease rate buttons), to select the DOT level, then you have toclick the DOT button to apply the DOT function.

Important

Even though the Dynamic Overclocking Technology is more stable thanmanual overclocking, basically, it is still risky. We suggest user to makesure that your CPU can afford to overclock regularly first. If you find the PCappears to be unstable or reboot incidentally, it's better to lower the level ofoverclocking options. By the way, if you need to conduct overclockingmanually, please do not to apply the DOT function.

Clock

In the User Profile sub-menu, click the setting button that besides the user profilebar, and the next screen will appear.

Use the draw bar to set the max system temperature. When the system temperatureexceeds the threshold you defined, the system will pop up a warning message andshut down the system.Use the draw bar to set the minimal fan speed. When the fan speed is lower than thethreshold you defined, the system will pop up a warning message.

Finally, you can choose the user profile by click the button in the left side and click theApply button to load the user profile.

After setting all values you need, you can change the user profile name in the boxthen click the save button to save all changes in a profile.
