Welcome to the 2010 “Green Season” with Mountain Lake Conservancy & Hotel What makes The Mountain Lake Conservancy and Hotel an excellent choice for a green and sustainable destination? Since it was established more than 20 years ago in 1989, The Mountain Lake Conservancy has been doing its part in conserving the unique 2,600 acres of Mountain Lake property. Our historic property offers a variety of rentals from rustic to modern and guests enjoy our 22 miles of multi-use trails and outdoor activities for their entertainment. Families have the opportunity to join Conservancy naturalists in educational programs such as learning about the unique “cycles” and history of the natural lake, wildflowers and trees, Appalachian culture, and hike to the breathtaking vistas of Bald Knob, Bear Cliffs and the Old Golf Course.

New for 2010, The Mountain Lake Conservancy is implementing a Sustainability Plan to take our current green standards to a higher level. We strive to make the best choices for the environment by implementing source reduction and recycling initiatives for our property. We are looking at alternatives for sustainable purchasing for many of our products. Mountain Lake is conscious of energy and water conservation by installing energy-efficient light bulbs and with the operation of our economical waste water treatment system. Our principal goal of the plan is to increase awareness within our community about sustainable outreach and its’ positive impacts. We have incorporated “Green” programming into our agenda to further educate our guests and community about our environmental efforts. Our mission to be a leader in reaching the highest green standards is in place for years to come. We are proud members of Virginia Green, Green Hotels Ltd, and Go Green NRV.

Mountain Lake is an extraordinary ecosystem that appeals to those who seek to enjoy nature at its finest. It is truly one of the Commonwealth’s unique treasures! Bring your family and friends and ‘forge bonds with nature’ at Mountain Lake.

2010 Lake Update: Natural RhythmsThe 2009 season brought us a rollercoaster ride of fluctuating water levels in the lake. A steady rise in water was encouraging throughout the spring and early summer, bringing the lake to about 1/3 full pond. Drier days in the late sum-mer and fall saw the water level slowly recede, though not nearly to the point that occurred in the fall of 2008. With record winter snow totals, we are encouraged by the rising lake level this winter. Much of the grasses in the dried lakebed have flourished to provide new, open habitat for many wildlife animals such as deer and birds. We even saw a return of fish in the lake; many small blue-gilled sunfish could be seen in the lakes shallow edges. Only time will tell what nature has in store for this mountain-top lake in the 2010 season.

INNOVA Frisbee Golf Course – NEW!Our existing Frisbee golf course has been im-proved with the addition of 9 INNOVA-quality holes. Put your disc to the test as you play the challenging course through forested fairways and rocky terrain. Frisbee golf, also known as Disc Golf, is a modern version of golf that has been played since the 1960s. Discs are thrown from tees to chain baskets in the shortest number of throws possible. This game is great for all ages!

Geocaching – NEW!Explore Salt Pond Mountain with the aid of a GPS unit, topographic map, and compass as you hunt for prize geocache boxes. The caches are hidden all over the property and range in difficulty and skill. Hike off the trail and in to the forest with the comfort of technology and basic orienteering skills. In Memory of Mike Riley, a Board Member of the Mountain Lake Conservancy

Mike Riley was Vice President of 1859 Historic Hotels, President & General Manager of Moody Gardens in Galveston and served on the board of The Mountain Lake Conservancy. Mr. Riley was the liason between the Hotel Management Company and the Mary Moody Northen Endowment, owners of Mountain Lake Conser-vancy & Hotel. He was known for his work ethic and good-natured disposition. Mike Riley passed away from an apparent heart attack on November 15, 2009. Mountain Lake General Manager, Buzz Scanland, remembers Mike Riley as a man with a pleasant demeanor, great sense for business and a caring individual. “Mike Riley always had the best interest of Mountain Lake in his decisions while serving on the board. Everyone he met counted him as their friend. He would take time to sit down with our staff and get to know them. He was a positive advocate for the organization and the employees.”

Mountain Lake had a memorial weekend in November and dedicated a stone by the Lake to the memory of Patrick Swayze. We are asking everyone to help raise money to cure Pancreatic Cancer. As you know, the Lake went dry in 2008. Therefore, Mountain Lake is sponsoring a contest that will allow all donors a chance to win a vacation to Mountain Lake (4 days-3 nights for a family of 4). We have marked a column on the boat dock that indicates when the Lake has reached Full Pond. By contributing $7 you may guess what week this will occur or for a $30 contribution, you may guess the month the Lake will be full. In case of a tie, there will be a drawing to determine the winner. All contributions will be made to the American Cancer Society in Honor of Patrick Swayze. Contributions are tax deductible.
