+PRESIDENT’S COLUMN03

A word from the President... Hiya,How quick has this term gone?! Can’t believe it. Still a couple of weeks left though and plenty go-ing on so I hope you all enjoyed seeing the works of Butler’s Fashionistas at our second ever fashion show, and look forward to enjoying watching some classics during the film festival next week as well as STAB’s production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ on Friday and Saturday. Then in the last week we look at celebrating Butler’s sporting achievements at the Sports Formal, don your entrepreneurial hat at the Dragon’s Den Final, dress in green for St Paddy’s Day, and support Charity Comm’s last event of term on Red Nose Day. What more could you want?! (If there actually is just let us know!)

The excitement of the past week has been caught up with hearing we’ve got the go ahead for the Sports Court!! This is something Butlerites have been asking for since the College first opened and we are so excited it is on its way….however, we’re not quite there yet. The Court is expected to cost around £150,000. As a College we only need to raise £25k, but this is still a challenge. We have until the summer to raise the money, so let’s get together and rise to the challenge! More details later on…

Finally, congratulations to those elected at the recent round of Exec elections, and good luck to anyone standing in the last round! Mel

NEW WIZARDS ON THE BLOCKMound investigates the newest additions to butler societies board

Butler is ever acquiring a wealth of new societies, and Epiphany term is to be no exception. Mound caught up with the latest 3 to be ratified.

1. Harry Potter SocietyDraco Dormiens Nunquam Titilandus. If this phrase elicits feelings of happi-ness and excitement then this society may just be for you (and even if they don’t, it’s always good to try new things)! As a Harry Potter society, inevitably our activi-ties will revolve around the world of Harry Potter. We’ll partake in the watching of the films, concocting food

inspired by the series, Harry Potter-related trips out and about (Edinburgh, perhaps?) and we might even give Quidditch a go!Contact: [email protected] or [email protected].

2. Cycling SocietyCycling society is also new this term and we’re planning to have rides weekly or fortnightly on Sunday mornings. We’re open to all abilities and are going to organise different styles of rides to suit all; road, tracks, (flat!) etc. The rides will be very relaxed, no pressure to be the next

Lance Armstrong or come every week, it’s just a great way to get some fun exercise, de-stress about all those deadlines and meet some new people. So if you have a bike and want to get out of Durham and see some of the gorgeous countryside, get in touch!Contact: [email protected].

3. Casual Book ClubNew this term, the Casual Book Club aims to give its members a relaxed environ-ment to chat about a variety of books and short stories free of any academic pressure. Students of any subject (even science students who aren’t sure what a book is) are free to participate in our chilled fortnightly meetings with a beverage and some nib-bles. Possible socials could include lairy book club nights out, or sophisticated cinema and theatre trips. We’re new, experimental and inexperienced so come along without any fear of being judged, ‘cos we’re nice like that.Contact: [email protected].

If you are interested in setting up a society, e-mail [email protected] or [email protected].

+BUTLER SPORTS COURT

BUTLER SPORT NEEDS YOUSPORTS OFFICER ANDREW hodgetts reveals college's big challenge

We have finally been given the go-ahead for a Sports Court to be built up at Butler!Various sports will be able to be played on the court – football, hockey and various others. This is a fantastic move forward for the College, and will really enhance our sporting participation and performance! Just imagine how good it would be to have this court at Butler...

The court, however, does not come cheaply. The cost will be around £150,000. This is where you come in. As a College, we only need to raise £25,000, by August. It is planned that a combination of the University and Ustinov will pay the rest. So essentially, for every £1 that a Butler student raises or donates, we get an extra £5 from elsewhere. £25k is a daunting figure, but if we all put in a real effort, we can do it.

There will be various fundraising activities going on over the rest of this year, so please

get involved and support the cause. The first of these fundraisers will be the Sports Formal, the black-tie event of this term, on Monday 14th March. The cost of the Sports Formal is £15, which includes a £5 discretionary donation to the court. After the Formal, there will be various activities in the bar, including an auction (of both items and people). Keep your eyes open for other fundraising events too! Please get on board and help to make this court happen!

We’re also looking for is sponsorship from companies, so if you have any contacts at companies who may be willing to donate to this cause, please let me know! They would be recognised at the Court for helping us reach our target. If anyone has any ideas, or wants to get involved in this exciting venture, please get in touch with me at [email protected].

What do you want the legacy of Butler College 2010/11 to be? I’d say a Sports Court would be a damn good legacy.

‘WE CAN BE AS GOOD AS WIGAN’FOOTBALL PRESIDENT SIMON MARSH REVIEWS BUTLER'S FOOTBALL SEASON TO DATE

At the end of last year, tak-ing over from the inaugural president of the football club, Rich Monaghan, I was left looking at a club whose spine was being ripped out. The majority of the A & B team were to graduate from respective degrees, and there were not enough footballers left to cover our three 11 a side league teams.

The club needed a strong influx of new blood to be able to properly compete in the University leagues. Not only did we get the num-bers, but there were over eighty freshers at the trials and over half of them went on to become integral parts of the squad. Dom Williams and Nathan Fagan have slotted straight into the A team squad with minimal fuss, whilst a number of freshers have ensured that the B & C teams are also equally competitive.

There have been surprises in a weather-sodden, Maiden Castle interfering season to date, with regular appear-ances from some rather unexpected people. Shining lights in an otherwise miser-able season start for the C team have been night-porter Dave Lawson, T-Pain and Big Stu Drayton. Ali Poll and Alex Bailey have also made themselves a regular

and deserved part of the B team setup, whilst Alix Beese has made the transi-tion from C team extraordi-naire to pacy B team wing dynamo with flying colours, if a little questionable on the shooting front.

Despite a mixed season on the pitch, with both B & C teams having early exits in the cup, and the A team being knocked out of the floodlit trophy to Mildert A, team spirit could not be higher, with a number of memorable socials. High-lights of the year include

crowd surfing in Digital, a successful ‘football legends’ social, Alex Trembath’s questionable chat and Hugo Proffitt’s prolificacy twinned with Eddy Newbould’s persistence.

With more than half of the football season still to play in a term and a half, the future promises much, including an elusive promotion for the A team to the promised land of the Premiership. Hopefully there is much more in store for the football club in the weeks to come.

+SPORT: BUTLER CRICKET UPDATE11

ti m 'ch ris gayle' picku p ON TH E EXPLOITS OF BUTLER'S CRICKET SEASONThe unsung heroes of Butler Sport have put a stamp on their bid for success this year with a strong start to the Indoor Cricket campaign with 3 consecutive wins and a squad full of enthusiasm and ambition that would make Andrew Strauss himself very aroused.

Butler Cricket since the birth of its existence has shied away from widespread recognition and notable prowess. But this is no more.

This term the lads (about 25 of us) have been working hard at Sunday nets at Durham School (4-5 if you’re interested in popping down), and this hard work and commitment has been reflected in the indoor performances – including ruthless batting from Ben Cullen and Ali Poll, Glenn McGrath–like bowling accuracy from Will Evans and the sheer raw pace of Matt Devine. All of which have made life seemingly easier for an inspired skipper, in yours truly.

Other important contributions have come from George O’Brien from behind the stumps, David Bartlett who swings the ball around corners, Josh Mason, Martin Head, Alix Beese, Marcus Wickwar and Daniel Easom.

After qualifying for the Indoor Cricket League knockout stages after finishing 3rd in our group, we face Van Mildert B in the quarter finals, played this Saturday 5th March.

From a skipper’s point of view, if I may, our squad depth and performances thus far in the indoor competition is setting up what I’m sure will be a cracking outdoor season. Without any shadow of doubt, Butler Cricket this year is a force to be reckoned with.

5 FILMS SO BAD THEY’RE GOODKI M EVANS AN D H ELEN LAM B O U R N E QU OTE SO M E I N FAM O US TITLES

1. EvolutionNot a film to be taken seriously - a ‘Ghost Busters’ spoof. Aliens hit earth and it’s American Pie’s ‘Stifler’ left to sort it out - need any more be said?

Block: Whoa, doc! Don't take the leg!Ira: Isn't there anything else you can do?Nurse: Dr, Look!Doctor: It's headed for his testicles.Block: Take it! Take the leg!

2. CamelotA Dragon with two heads, a chicken with one (but it’s an axe) and enough songs to fill Disney’s back-catalogue. Truly a kids classic that we’re still laughing at.

Devon: Anyway, cheer up. When we get to camelot, we'll be kissed by the world's most beautiful women.

Cornwall: Yeah, we're a giant talking lizard with two heads. We're gonna have to beat them off with a stick.

3. The Fith ElementSet in the future, with Bruce Willis’s taxi driver the lead, and as many rub-ber masks as any sci-fi film can handle. Watch out for Rush Hour-star Chris Rock’s cameo as the colourful ‘Ruby Rhod’.

Police: Are you classified as a human?Korben: Negative, I am a meat popsicle.

DJ Ruby Rhod: Quiver ladies, quiver.

4. LabyrinthDavid Bowie as a ‘king of goblins’ setting a child the task of navigating his labyrinth and dancing with puppets all the while? More than slightly surreal, but holds some incredible one-liners.

Didymus: I have sworn with my life's blood, none shall pass this way without my permission.Sarah: Well, may we have your permission?Didymus: Well, I, uh.. that is, hmm.. Yes.

'Fiery': When your thing gets wild, chilly down!

5. From Dusk til DawnQuentin Tarentino’s films are not known for their comedy, but looking past the appalling special effects and George Clooney’s suspiciously fake neck tattoo, it’s a cracker.

Kate: Where are you taking us?Ritchie: Mexico.Kate: What's in Mexico?Ritchie: Mexicans.
