Teaching & Collaboration with

technology

● Teachers and trainers are

professional communicators

● High definition sound and

video are opportunities

● As a professional trainer use

two devices

○ Laptop for content, virtual

machines, ...

○ Specific client system for

sound and video streaming

○ Refurbished (1K) or new (4K)

● My experience in online teaching goes

back nearly ten years, starting in an

international project with Finland

● Tools experimented with:

○ Adobe Connect

○ Webex

○ Zoom

○ Skype

○ Microsoft Teams

● My preference goes to the opportunities

offered by the Webex Suite & Devices

○ Webex Meetings

○ Webex Training

○ Webex Events

○ Webex Teams

Course Organization & Planning -- Example

Example Course

CCNA-2 SRWECourse: Routing, Switching

and Wireless Essentials

Credits: 8 ects

Number of hours: 200-240

Total duration: 5 weeks(*)(*) If courses are planned one after the

other, students can focus on one topic

during a fixed amount of time. After three

or four courses an integrated project can

be organized.

If students have two courses in the same

period, this course will be planned across

10 weeks, alternating with other courses.

If students have four courses of a similar

weight in the same period, this course

will be planned across 20 weeks,

alternating with other courses.

● Class activities

40% - (2/5) -- e.g. two days a week

● Individual and small group study and preparation activities

20% - (1/5) -- e.g. one day a week

● Practical activities & Team Work

40% - (2/5) -- e.g. two days a week

● Most activities in the table are feasible remotely. Two out of

fourteen activities (in red) are more difficult with remote

instruction and learning

Page 7: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Online Training & Coaching

Remote instruction is efficientRemote instruction is fantasticbut it is extremely intensive and exhausting

Online sessions

● Teacher assists in structuring, planning and setting the goals● Online interaction is important● Involve the audience in online sessions● Students should be prepared before the lesson begins (based on the agenda

sent to them before each session)● Plan interactive activities, breakouts and options to motivate students● The duration of one coherent part of a session is like a 40 min briefing

Allow breaks● Class management is easier when teaching online

Page 8: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Online Training & Coaching --2

How to keep learners motivated and involved

● Be interactive

Interaction is definitely possible online

● Use more than only voice (listening) and text (reading)

○ Screen sharing enhances student focus

○ Visuals can enhance the sessions

○ Use a digital whiteboard

● Give students opportunities and challenges to do something

● Plan breaks more often than in a physical class environment

● Leave the session open at the end giving students opportunities to

interact after your session

Page 9: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Online Collaboration

One2One -- One2Many -- Many2ManyAn online environment creates opportunities for intensive collaboration and

information sharing

SynchronousOnline team meetings (planned or ad hoc)

Brainstorming with chat messages or voice

AsynchronousCollect and share information in team spaces: messages, reactions, uploaded files,

images, overviews, lists, TODOs, recordings, …

Next Slide: Collaboration with Webex Teams

Networking Academy Curriculum Facilities for Learning

The Cisco Networking Academy Curriculum is oriented to the student’s point-of-view

and offers numerous opportunities for interactive and self-directed learning

Students have to learn how to make use of interactive possibilities and feedback

● Videos

● Schemas and visual representations

● Interactive activities*

● Quizzes*

● Syntax checkers*

● Simulation exercises and labs*

● Online tests*

(*) with individual feedback

Networking Academy Curriculum Facilities

Page 12: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Make students aware of the facilities within NetAcad

● Explain to students how to learn through an interactive course

● Organize briefings to show students examples of (deep) content exploration

● Motivate your students to make intensive use of interactive possibilities and

become a self-directed learner

● Also explain how to efficiently use feedback coming from the online learning

system

● Allow students to connect in small groups (of two to three students) to get

acquainted with the concepts and skills in doing interactive exercises and

simulation labs together online (with Webex Teams)

● Teach students how to organize and document their learning

● Explain to student the value of creating a portfolio

Course Sequencing● The Cisco Networking Academy courses are offered in a sequential manner

● In many situations the exact sequence of activities is not important

● The sequence of materials in Networking Academy courses is flexible

● There are numerous opportunities to break with the sequence

● There are many possible ways for students to navigate through a Networking

Academy course, explore the content and practice the concepts and skills

Freedom and Options● Students are given a degree of freedom for exploring and learning the

concepts and practical skills in any consistent order that fits them best.

Many students like options

● Freedom offers possibilities to differentiate

Page 14: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Navigating through NetAcad Courses --2

How to allow options and choices to students● Student needs to find out what is important and what is less important

● Most important is to understand the concepts and to be able to apply the

knowledge and skills in a professional context and in new situations

What is really important in a career-oriented Networking

Academy course● What are the requirements of the certification exam?

● What are the requirements of the professional world?

○ Understand the concepts and apply the concepts in real situations

○ Understand the practical hands-on labs and apply your skills in real situations

○ Design and implement a solution for a new problem

● Challenge your students with case studies and project ideas

Page 15: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

Don’t “teach” all the content in class

● Before teaching a class think about what the students are going to do (and

so you know what you have to say or explain)

● It is not necessary to explicitly teach all the course content. Teach just enough for the students to understand the course when they will be reading the

online content and for them to be successful in practical activities and tests

● There is a large choice of presentation formats to facilitate the work of a

teacher: videos, images, schemas, process flows, lists, texts, interactive

exercises, …

● Choose the best time and place for all sorts of information sharing

● Motivate students to create a portfolio showing the results of their

learning and practical activities. Explain how to process the feedback from

the course

Tips for Students

● Break with the sequence, focus on the essential concepts and

skills

● Test your understanding of the concepts by doing quizzes and

taking online exams

● Practice your skills by doing interactive exercises and

simulation labs

● Focus on the feedback!

● Follow up your work by creating a portfolio of all things

learned, all things created and all the things still to do

Page 17: Motivating Learners Remote Instruction & Learning

It may be the first time for your students

● Your students may never have had an interactive course like

the courses in Cisco Networking Academy before

● It is not obvious for students how to use the freedom of

choice

● Coach students how to learn (in groups and individually)

● Be a coach first, instructor secondNot a single Source of truth: students have to see that the course content does not have to

originate from the instructor
