PreparationTrace the Orange Peel Appliqué shape onto template plastic and cut out.

CuttingWOF = Width of Fabric; HST = Half-square Triangle; OPA = Orange Peel Appliqué

Fabric A, cut:(4) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (32) 5” (7.62cm) squares (4) 41⁄2” x WOF (11.43cm x WOF); sub-cut (32) 41⁄2” (11.43cm) squares

Fabric B, cut:(5) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (2) 5” (7.62cm) squares and (32) OPA(6) 21⁄2” x WOF (6.35cm x WOF), for binding

Fabric C, cut:(5) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (6) 5” (7.62cm) squares and (28) OPA

Fabric D, cut: (4) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (14) 5” (7.62cm) squares and (16) OPA (2) 41⁄2” x WOF (11.43cm x WOF); sub-cut (16) 41⁄2” (11.43cm) squares

Fabric G, cut: (4) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (10) 5” (7.62cm) squares and (16) OPA

Interfacing, cut: (33) 5” x WOF (12.70cm x WOF); sub-cut (132) 5” (7.62cm) squares

Sewing All seam allowances are 1⁄4” (.64cm) and pieces are sewn right sides together.

HST Background Blocks 1. Select (1) 5” (7.62cm) Fabric A square and (1) 5”

(7.62cm) Fabric D square. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the Fabric A square (Fig. 1).

4. Trim each HST unit to 41⁄2” (11.43cm) square (Fig. 4).

5. Repeat Steps 1-4 to create a total of (20) A/D HST units and the number of other fabric HST pairings shown in Figure 5 “Fig. 5” on page 5.

Appliqué6. Pair a Fabric B OPA with a 5” (12.70cm) interfacing

square, placing the Fabric B OPA right side together with the fusible side of the interfacing and pin in place. Stitch a 1⁄4” (.64cm) seam around the shape (Fig. 6).

7. Using pinking shears to reduce bulk, trim the fusible interfacing seam allowances to 1⁄4” (.64cm) and clip the points blunt. Using small sharp scissors, cut a 2” (5.08cm) slit in the center of the interfacing layer only (Fig. 7). Turn the OPA right side out through the slit and ensure that the edges and points are fully formed. The fusible side of the interfacing should now visible on the underside of the OPA shape.

9. Place the OPA shape diagonally on the right side of the 41⁄2” (11.43cm) HST units and squares indicated in Figure 9. Fuse the OPA to the square. With a coordinating or monofilament thread, edgestitch the OPA shape in place. Repeat the above step to secure and create the total number of units indicated.

Quilt Top Assembly10. Following the Quilt Layout diagram “Quilt Layout”

on page 7 for block placement and orientation, lay out the quilt top in (14) rows of (12) blocks each.

11. Stitch the blocks together in each row. Press the seams in alternate directions for adjacent rows. Stitch the rows together in order to complete the quilt top. Press all the seams in one direction.

Finishing12. Sew together the (6) 21⁄2” (6.35cm x WOF) Fabric

B binding strips end to end using diagonal seams. Press the seams open. Press the binding strip in half wrong sides together.

13. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Trim excess batting and backing even with the top after quilting is completed.

14. Leaving an 8” (20.32cm) tail of binding, sew binding to top of quilt through all layers matching all raw edges. Miter corners. Stop approximately 12” (30.48cm) from where you started. Lay both loose ends of binding flat along quilt edge. Where these two loose ends meet, fold them back on themselves and press to form a crease. Using this crease as your stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding together right sides together. Trim seam to 1⁄4” (.64cm) and press open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.

15. Turn the binding to the back of quilt and hand-stitch in place.
