“Our goal is to expose the com-munity as much as possible to thewealth of the art in our commu-nity and outside to get them a

broader art experience. MoorArtshas TALENT is a little way for usto showcase the talent of thesepeople who have performed inour productions,” said CandaceColeman, a MoorArts communi-cation trustee.

MoorArts, often mistaken for atheater company, is a non-profitorganization started more thantwo decades ago that providesunique artistic entertainment

and educational opportunities forMoorestown citizens in all areasof the arts. Living up to its tagline“inspiring creativity” and its mis-sion, MoorArts is an advocate forarts education systemwide. It be-lieves education in the artsshould be regarded as a necessity, not a luxury.

Year round, it provides a widevariety of events and opportuni-ties to experience the arts. It of-fers entertainment, concerts, workshops and classes forMoorestown residents, young andold. It also partners up with localorganizations such as the Depart-ment of Parks and Recreationand Moorestown Township Pub-lic Schools in these ventures.

“I think it is amazing. I wasconsidering this yesterday: if they weren’t here, who wouldoffer these cultural experiences?

They don’t provide just entertain-ment, they offer social servicesand opportunities for people of all ages and all abilities,” saidJoseph Thomas, MoorArts hasTALENT production manager.

Instead of its usual summertheater production, MoorArts de-cided to change things up a bitand show off the talent the youth

The First Baptist Church of Moorestown will be holding a RecoveryWorship Service on July 12 at 10 a.m. Theservice is open to everyone, and especiallyto those struggling with or impacted by ad-dictions.

"This service gives those in the recoverycommunity a chance to worship in a wel-

coming, safe space," said Rev. Linda Pepe, pastor of FBCM. "Our church building ishome to various 12 Step Recovery and sup-port groups throughout the week; andthose groups refer in their literature andpractice to a 'Higher Power.' Our aim is to

offer the people in those same communi-ties a space to worship God that is judg-ment-free.

“There are many people who haven'tbeen to a church in years, for a variety of reasons; from the church not being accept-ing of their illness, to shame, to fear," Pepesaid. "But when it comes right down to it,

we all struggle with something. All of usare addicted to one thing or another, whether its substance abuse; or being ad-dicted to food, TV, working, shopping orgaming – we can even be addicted to ourown ego. The recovery service gives all of

us a chance to come as we are, to encour-age one another, and to enjoy the love andforgiveness of the one who accepts us un-conditionally – no strings attached."

Future Recovery Worship Services in2015 will be held on Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11,Nov. 8 and Dec. 13.

located at 19 West Main St.For more information or to speak to

Special Recovery Worship Service planned for July 12

    What was possibly the worst-

    kept secret in New Jersey

    politics was finally revealed

last week: Gov. Christie will officially

be running for president of the United

    States in 2016.

Christie threw his hat into the ring

last week, and now he’ll have to con-tend with the apparent 1 million other

    people running for the Republican

    nomination – notable among them

Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry,

Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and

    Scott Walker.

    Christie’s prospects of winning the

    Republican nomination are consider-

ably lower than they were back in 2012,

when he decided to not run for the tick-

et that was heads-up with Barack

    Obama’s re-election campaign. Howev-

er, despite this – and whether you

    think he’d make a good president –

Christie will probably make a strong

    candidate.

In 2009, Christie won the gubernato-

    rial election over incumbent Jon

Corzine. He collected 48.5 percent of the vote that year, the largest margin

for a first-term Republican in New Jer-

    sey since 1969.

    Four years later, he overwhelmingly

    won re-election over Barbara Buono

and other challengers with 60 percent

    of the vote.

Today, after a few scandals, his ap-

    proval rating has dipped significantly,

    and other strong Republican rivals

have entered the race as well.

But that doesn’t mean he can’t turn

    things around, and make Republican

voters forget – or overlook – his defi-

    ciencies.

    Christie has always thrived during

campaigns, and he has always done

well with all voters, regardless of polit-

ical party affiliation. That has long

been his attraction as a potential Re-

    publican candidate for presidency. In

    his nomination speech, he already

    blasted both parties, saying Republi-

cans and Democrats alike “have failed

    our country.”

Could that be enough by itself tomake Republican voters throw their

support behind him, instead of Bush

    and the others?

    Could he overcome recent negative

press received with the pension fight

and the bridge scandal by focusing on

his accomplishments and plans for our

    country?

Maybe. It wouldn’t be the first time it

    happened.

The next few months of electioneer-

ing should prove interesting before the

first primaries are held in February.

Next year will be the 100th anniver-

sary of Woodrow Wilson winning re-

election as president. He was the last

candidate from New Jersey to win.

    Could Christie be the next?

    in our opinion

A president from New Jersey?Chris Christie is of ficially a candidate, and he could be a good one

    Your thoughts

What do you think about Chris Christie’sbid for the Republican nomination forpresident? Share your thoughts on this, and other topics, in a letter to the editor.

     Dept. of Parks & Recreation

July is National Parks andRecreation Month. This year, theMoorestown Department of Parks and Recreation is takingpart in the national recognition of recreational programs and theentities that make its servicespossible. Over the last eightyears, the Moorestown Depart-ment of Parks and Recreation hasexperienced what can be called a

holistic transformation. The lastdecade has seen shrinking publicfunds and diminished publicservices across the board – na-tionally, regionally and locally. The Moorestown Department of Parks and Recreation saw thistrend and began to investigateways recreation initiatives couldbe broadened and services ex-panded, to meet the needs of the

    Moorestown community and to

“re-create recreation.” Since Jan-uary 2013, previously dwindlingprograms and activities have notonly regained strength, but manyare experiencing record levels of attendance and new programsare being developed every season.

To be able to provide the widerange of activities and servicesnow available to Moorestonians, the department has created a spi-der-web of support that allowsrecreation programs to grow, de-

velop and better serve theMoorestown community. Thefirst step was to embrace relation-ships with the growing number of private sports programs and ath-letic leagues. By creating a win-win relationship by which munic-ipal fields and facilities supportlocal athletics and by which part-nership programs and feeder pro-grams are established, the depart-

ment found that working in uni-

son brought the best level of serv-ice to local residents. The sup-portive nature and ability toshare services meant that athleticopportunities were available toathletes at all levels. Moorestownboasts a wide variety of privateand “rec” programs that supportone another and provide resi-

dents with athletic outlets.Additional relationships with

local non-profits has also allowedfor greater collaboration andmore opportunities for residents. The department collaborates

with MoorArts for a wide varietyof arts programs and activitiesthat touch every member of thecommunity. From MoorMotionand sponsoring the District ArtShow to the Holiday Arts Festi-val, Moor Arts creates arts oppor-tunities for the community. TheFriends Enrichment Program, alocal non-profit with Quakerroots and traditions, suppliesscholarships for local youth to at-tend summer camp programs andother recreation programs

throughout the year. Founded bylocal Quaker, Monique Begg, thisprogram offers tremendous op-portunities not just to youth butto their families as well.

A partnership established withlocal non-profit, Live Civilly in2012 offers nutritional and educa-tional assistance to local, under-served youth in Moorestown.Daily after-school, healthy snacksat the Recreation Open Gym pro-gram and Live Civilly HomeworkHelp twice each week operate inthe Church Street RecreationCenter. This partnership alsoprovides daily lunches to scholar-ship camp-goers each summer.

Local partner Sean FischelConnect donates funds raisedfrom its annual run to provide avariety of services to the Depart-ment of Parks and Recreation. Most recently, their generous do-nation to the summer SpecialNeeds Camp has made the expan-sion of the camp possible. This

expansion is especially importantas many of the special needs stu-dents were “aging out” of theoriginal program. Additionally,

SFC provides Youth Soccer TeamShirts and WIFI to the RecreationCenter so that visitors may accessthe Internet and teens can enjoythe Third Floor CommunityRoom.

MooreKids, assists the Recre-ation Department through theprovision of scholarships forlocal youth to participate in activ-ities from Summer Parks Pro-grams to Special Needs Support

Outings. The partnership withMooreKids has allowed the localspecial needs population the op-portunity to build relationshipsthrough fun, family friendlysports outings.

Newer, youth-driven organiza-tions such as The Perfect Gameand Moorestown Youth OutreachAssociation provide local servic-es as well. The Perfect Game pro-vides gently used sports equip-ment to families needing itemslike soccer cleats, baseball bats

and hockey sticks. The MYOAvolunteers on the Third Floor of the Recreation Center to providethe “Chillin’ at the Rec” programduring summer months to givearea youth a safe and supervisedplace to recreate with peers.

Over the last several years, theMoorestown Education Founda-tion have supported the depart-ment with a grant to assist thespecial needs summer program. This allows for children and teensages 5 through 18 years enjoymany wonderful field trips andspecial events.

So as you mull over all of theopportunities and partnershipsprovided to the Moorestown Com-munity, help us celebrate Nation-al Parks and Recreation Month.Attend a concert, sign up for aprogram or volunteer with one of the organizations that helps tomake these opportunities possi-ble. “With so much news to cover, events like the earthquakes inNepal are slowly covered less andless. Too soon after, we forgetthere are people still in greatneed. They (the third-graders)wanted to share this story, so kidslike them would help and Nepal

    would not be forgotten,” Morkensaid.

The third graders took the ini-

tiative and started a fundraisingproject for Nepal with the goal of raising $360. Within four weeks, the class surpassed its goal byleaps and bounds, earning$3,000.01.

The moment Morken heardabout the Nepal earthquake, shethought of her students. She de-cided to put it into the curricu-

lum to help teach them about cur-rent events and empathy, and gaincareer and life skills. She felt cer-

tain her students would be moti-vated to do something by hearingthis news.

“Children are capable of doinggreat things if they are given theright information and tools. Ihoped that by teaching themabout Nepal, they would feel com-pelled to do something to help, and in doing so learn invaluablelife lessons,” Morken said.

After reading a moving articleabout the earthquakes in “TIMEfor Kids,” the class was inspiredto do a fundraising project forNepal. The children were ener-gized from the start, setting a goalof $360 to be raised in only fourweeks.

“Nepal desperately needs ourhelp because a lot of people’shomes crashed, and they needfood and water,” third grader Syd-ney Parks said.

As a class, the students brain-stormed fundraising ideas, whichincluded doing extra chores

around the house, walking neigh-bors’ dogs, washing cars and hav-ing lemonade and snack stands. Then, the students set to work, planning with one another on thebus and playground and arounddinner tables with their families.

“I loved the idea of the classwanting to raise money for theNepal victims. My daughterMegan came home from school soexcited to tell me what they weredoing to raise money. Many of the children worked together as a

team and had a fun time in theprocess,” said parent Colleen Leo,whose daughter had a lemon-ade/snack stand that raised $360.

“I baked and sold baked goodsfor my family, friends and neigh-bors. Some of my products werecookies, blondies and brownies. Imade about $600! It made me feelreally good that I could help thepeople suffering in Nepal,” thirdgrader Zoe Yurkewicz said.

    After the fundraisers were

completed, the students sent pho-tographs and videos to Morken, which were shared with the class. They gleaned ideas from one an-

other about how best to markettheir events and price their items, learning important career skillsalong the way.

“Many career readiness skillsare taught and reinforcedthrough fundraising – if childrenare given the chance to lead andbe hands-on throughout the en-tire process. They learned how tofind the best locations forfundraising, effective marketingand the importance of lookingtheir customers in the eyes, thanking them and teachingthem about their cause,” Morkensaid.

“This activity was differentthan activities we do with text-

books and worksheets, becausewe didn’t just learn what hap-pened or how someone else

helped. We did something tohelp,” student Jacob Tom said.

“When the children raisedmore than expected, I was ecstat-ic, but not at all surprised. Thisclass demonstrated creativity andhard work from the very first dayof school. They supported one an-other the entire way and tackledthis project with abounding ener-gy,” Morken said.

“I enjoyed that we had to workfor the money for Nepal. It wasworth it,” said Mark DiMarino.

Morken said she couldn’t havedone the project without the sup-port of the parents; they knewwhen to help their children andwhen to step back. Colleen saidMorken is a great teacher andshould be recognized for the suc-

cess of the fundraiser. Both com-mended the students and every-one who donated.

“It was great to see how muchpeople care and were eager tohelp with this positive cause,”Colleen said.

According to Morken, the stu-dents wanted to share their storyand get the word out about theearthquake. As much as theyhelped, they want others to learnmore and help, too.

“If someone said, ‘Nepal mustbe doing fine. I don’t see anythingabout it on the news,’ I would say,‘Even though it is not on thenews, they still need a lot of help,’” Megan Leo said.

“I think other kids should help, because it is going to take a lot,not just one person to healNepal,” student Rebeca Gillespiesaid.
