Moody’s Corporation – What do They do?
John Moody (1868-1958) founded Moody’s in 1909. After the stock market crashed in 1907, he had an idea
that instead of, “simply collecting information on the property, capitalization, and management of companies, he now offered investors an analysis of security values.”
He decided that his company would publish a book that analyzed the railroads and their outstanding securities. Moody's Analyses of Railroad Investments shows the analytic principles that Moody used to assess the railroads.
The manual quickly began to be used by investors. In 1913, he expanded what companies they analyzed, launching his evaluation of industrial companies and utilities.
