When autowipers is selected, thewipers will cycle once regardless ofwhether the windscreen is wet or dry.

Thereafter, or when the ignition isswitched on with autowipersselected, the wipers will not cycleuntil water is detected on thewindscreen. Alternatively, move thelever to another position and thenselect autowipers, or operate thewasher.

The rain sensor will continuouslymeasure the amount of water on thewindscreen and adjust the speed of

the front wipers automatically (singlewipe, intermittent, normal or highspeed wiping).

protected by an airbag in front of it!

Original text according to ECER94.01: Extreme Hazard! Do not

use a rearward facing child restraint

on a seat protected by an air bag infront of it!

There is a risk of death orserious injury when the airbag

deploys.

Always have the rear row headrestraint raised when a child

restraint is being installed or

occupying the seat, provided doingso does not move the child restraintaway from the vehicle seat.

Note:If the vehicle has beeninvolved in an accident, have the childsafety seat checked by an expert asit might be damaged.

Note:Do not leave children

unattended in the child safety seat orin the vehicle.

Note:When installing a childseat/restraint with the seat belt,always ensure belts fit without slackor twists.

WARNING

There is a risk of death orserious injury when the

manufacturers instructions are notfollowed properly or when the childseat/restraint is modified in any way.

Whenever installing a childseat/restraint, always read and follow

the manufacturers instructions.

WARNING

Do not hold a child on your lap

while the vehicle is moving.

Children of height 150 cm or underor aged 12 years or under should besecured in special restraints forchildren, such as baby seats, childsafety seats or booster cushions in

the rear seats.

A choice of ECE approved childrestraints is available at your FordDealer. Please ask for therecommended child seats. Togetherwith the adult seat belt, theserestraints help to provide maximumsecurity for the children.

Child restraints for differentmass groups

The correct restraint to be useddepends on the childs age andweight:

Baby safety seat

Babies under 13 kg (approximately18 months) are best protected ifproperly restrained in rearward facingbaby safety seats(Group 0+) on

the rear seat.

Children weighing between 13 and18 kg (approximately nine months to

four years old) should be carriedproperly restrained in child safety

seats(Group I) in the rear seat.

You should never use a boosterseat with only a lap belt.

Never put the shoulder beltunder a childs arm or behind

the back.

Never use pillows, books, ortowels to boost a child.

Children weighing more than 15 kgand under 150 cm should use abooster seat or booster cushion.

Ford recommends using boosterseats that combine a boostercushion and a back rest into one seat

for children between 15 and 25 kg.The raised seating position ensuresthat the adult seat belt can becorrectly guided over the centre of

the shoulder instead of along theneck, the lap belt lying tightly across

the hips instead of the stomach.

Make sure that your child sits in anupright position.

Integrated booster cushion

Note:Do not use the raised boostercushion together with a child safetyseat.

The booster cushion should be usedfor children from approximately 6 to

12 years, with a height of up to 150cm and weighing between 22 and36 kg.

Vario child safety seat

The Vario child safety seat should beused for children from three and ahalf years up to seven years andweighing between 15 and 25 kg. Itmust be secured with an inertia reel

three-point seat belt. The child safety

seat may be used in any seatingposition in the rear seats including thecentre.

Note:Refer also to the instructionsprovided with the child safety seat.

Once the child is seated on thevehicle seat, put the Vario child safetyseat in front of the child. Secure it as

follows with an inertia reel three-pointbelt:

1. Insert the tongue into the buckleuntil a distinct click is heard.

2. Place the lap strap in the mouldprovided and tighten it.

3. Place the shoulder strap over thelap strap and tighten.

Do not modify the front of thevehicle in any way, as this can

adversely affect the airbagdeployment.

Note:A loud bang will be heardwhen an airbag deploys and it isnormal to see a cloud of harmlesspowdery residue.

The airbag system comprises the

following:

dual-stage inflatable nylon bags(airbags) with gas generators.

crash sensors.

a warning lamp in the instrumentpanel.

Repairs to either of the frontseat covers, the sensors

attached to the seats as well as tothe roof lining should only be carriedout by properly trained technicians.Injuries may result if the side airbagsare triggered inadvertently.

Do not block, obstruct or coverthe airbag because it may

prevent proper deployment. Do notpoke any sharp objects into the areas

where airbags are fitted. This coulddamage the airbags.

Do not use any accessory seatcovers that are not specifically

designed for seats with side airbags.These seat covers must be fitted byproperly trained technicians.

Always wear the seat belt and

keep sufficient distancebetween the driver and the steeringwheel. Only when the seat belt isused properly, can it hold the bodyin a position which allows the airbag

to achieve its optimum effect. Thereis a risk of injury when the airbagdeploys.

The seat and back must be setcorrectly for the airbags to beoptimally effective. See Sitting in the

correct position (page 90).This is the ideal seating position forthe driver and front passenger andhelps reduce the risk of injury fromsitting too close to an inflating airbag.

The front airbags activate duringsignificant collisionswhich areeither frontalor up to 30degreesfrom the left or the right.

The airbags inflate within a fewthousandths of a second. They willdeflate on contact with the front

occupants thus cushioning forwardbody movement.

During minor collisions as well asoverturns and rear or side collisions,

the front airbag system will not beactivated.

WARNINGS

Repairs to the steering wheel,

steering column and airbagsystem should be carried out byproperly trained technicians.

Always keep the areas in frontof the airbags free. Never affix

anything to or over these areas.

These areas should only be wipedwith a damp cloth, never with a wetcloth.

Dual-stage strategy

A system of sensors in the vehiclemonitors vehicle speed, the status of

the seat belt and the position of thedrivers seat. In case of an accident,

the system is able to analyze differentcrash and occupant conditions andactivate the appropriate safetydevices.

In most airbag deployments, the firststage is deployed to provideoccupant restraint. The second stageis deployed afterwards. In the mostsevere crash events both stages aredeployed to provide occupantrestraint.

The system increases the safetypotential particularly for drivers who

are not of a standard height or not ina standard seating position.

Side air bags

A label on the seatback indicates thatside airbags are fitted. The sideairbags are fitted on the side of the

seatbacks of the front seats. In caseof a severe lateral collision, the airbagon the side affected by the collisionwill be inflated.

The airbag will inflate between thedoor panel and occupant. Once theoccupants body contacts the airbag,

the propellant escapes, therebycushioning the impact.

The side airbags are not activatedupon minor lateral collisions nor uponfront or rear impacts.

Curtain air bags

Moulded writing on the door pillarsover the seat belts indicates thatcurtain airbags are fitted. The curtainairbags are fitted over the front andrear side windows inside the rooflining. In case of a severe lateralcollision, the air bag on the sideaffected by the collision will beinflated.

The curtain air bags are not activatedupon minor lateral collisions nor upon

front or rear impacts.

Seat belts

WARNINGS

Use seat belts at all times.

Never use a seat belt for morethan one person.

Avoid wearing thick clothing.

The seat belts should fit tightlyaround the body.

Seat belt pretensioner

WARNINGThe belt pretensioners must notbe removed. If the

pretensioners deployed during anaccident, they must be replaced.Have the pretensioners serviced anddisposed of by specially trainedpersonnel only.

The restraint system, with beltpretensioners in the front seat, helps

to reduce the risk of serious injury in

a head-on collision. During a seriouscrash the seat belts are pretensioned

to help reduce slack in the belt.

The pretensioners are triggered infrontal and side collisions providedthe threshold is reached. In rearcollisions the pretensioners are not

triggered. The passengerspretensioner is also disabled if thepassengers seat is empty, even if

the passengers buckle is latched.

SEAT BELT REMINDER

When the vehicles speedexceeds 7 km/h (4 mph),

the seat belt reminder lampwill illuminate and a chime will soundif the drivers safety belt is unbuckled.

The chime will stop after 10 minutes.The lamp will not go out until thedriver has fastened his/her safetybelt.

WARNING

Never sit on top of a buckledsafety belt to avoid the seat belt

reminder function. The restraintsystem can only work properly if

passengers have buckled up theirsafety belts.

Note:The seat belt reminderremains in standby mode after thedriver has fastened his/her safetybelt. It will be reactivated if the driverunbuckles his/her safety belt.

Deactivating the seat beltreminder

To deactivate the seat belt reminderfor one ignition cycle, buckle andunbuckle the seat belt within 3seconds with the ignition switchedon.

Contact your dealer to deactivate theseat belt reminder permanently and

to reactivate it afterwards. Yourdealer will either provide you with therelevant information or will carry out

the deactivation/reactivation for you.

Pregnant women must wear acorrectly positioned seat belt; it

is safer for mother and unborn child.

Never wear just the lap strap ofa lap/shoulder diagonal seat belt

and never sit on the lap strap usingjust the shoulder strap. Both of theseactions are extremely dangerous andmay increase your risk of seriousinjury.

The lap strap should be fittedcomfortably across the hips, lowbeneath the pregnant abdomen. The

diagonal part of the seat belt shouldbe placed between the breasts, andworn above and to the side of thepregnant abdomen.

Always wear seat belts without slackor twists. For optimum protection,

the seat belts should fit tightly aroundthe body. Do not recline the frontseats excessively, as the beltsprovide maximum protection when

the seats are in the near uprightposition.

confirm that the system is

operational.

WARNINGS

The radio frequency used by theremote control can also be used

by other short distance radiotransmissions (e.g. amateur radios,medical equipment, wirelessheadphones, remote controls, alarmsystems etc.). If the remote control

frequencies are jammed, you will notbe able to use any remote functions,

the vehicle will not lock or unlock, norwill the alarm be armed. However,

you can lock/ unlock with the key.

The vehicle or luggagecompartment will be opened if

the buttons are pressedunintentionally, without the remote

control being directed towards thevehicle (e.g. in your pocket).

The range between transmitter andvehicle is environmentally influencedand varies greatly.

PROGRAMMING THE

REMOTE CONTROL

A maximum of four remote controls(including the ones supplied with the

vehicle) can be programmed.

If the indicator lamp flashes forapproximately one minute and thenrepeatedly at irregular intervals, thesystem did not recognise the keycode. Remove the key and try again.

If a key with an incorrect code was

used, a waiting period of about 20seconds is required before starting

the vehicle with a correctly codedkey.

If the engine does not start, a systemmalfunction has occurred. Have thesystem checked by an expertimmediately.

ARMING THE ALARM

Note:If the vehicle is locked with the

key, this does not activate the alarmsystem (vehicles with 3.0 l Duractec

VE/-ST or 2.5l DuractecVE engineand enhanced security).

The system is armed as soon as thevehicle is locked and acts as adeterrent to unauthorised personswho attempt to open the doors,bonnet or luggage compartment, or

remove the audio system.Interior sensors

Note:The interior sensors functioncorrectly only if all windows and thesunroof are completely closed. Inaddition to this, the sensors must notbe covered up. The system shouldnot be activated if any persons,animals or other moving objects are

inside the vehicle.

Note:Do not activate the interiorsensors if an additional heatingsystem is used, as the alarm couldotherwise be set off.

The interior sensors monitor anymovement within the vehicle.

The interior sensors are activatedtogether with the double lockingsystem.

Automatic arming delay

Up to 20 seconds after activating the

anti-theft alarm system, it is stillpossible to open the vehicle againwithout triggering the alarm. After

that, the anti-theft alarm system willmonitor all doors, the bonnet and the

tailgate, provided that they areclosed.

If a door, the bonnet or the tailgate isclosed later, the system will monitorit after 20 seconds.

Alarm

The alarm sounds for 30 seconds ifan unauthorised person opens adoor, the luggage compartment or

the bonnet, or if the interior sensors(optional) register any movementinside the vehicle.

The hazard warning flashers will flash

for five minutes.Any attempt to start the engine or toremove the audio system sounds thealarm again.

DISARMING THE ALARM

The anti-theft alarm system can bedeactivated at any time even when

the alarm is sounding by unlockingthe drivers door with the key or withthe remote control.

Note:The autowipers feature isintended for use during wet weatherconditions only and is very sensitive

When autowipers is selected, thewipers will cycle once regardless ofwhether the windscreen is wet or dry.

The rain sensor will continuouslymeasure the amount of water on thewindscreen and adjust the speed of

Window anti-trapprotection

WARNINGSAnti-trap protection is not activewhile the electric window

memory is being reset. Make surethat there are no obstacles in the wayof the closing window.

Careless closing of the electricwindows can override the

anti-trap protection and causeinjuries.

All electric windows are equippedwith anti-trap protection. Thewindows will stop automatically whileclosing and reverse some distanceif there is an obstacle in the way.

To override anti-trap protection whenthere is a resistance, e. g. in thewinter, proceed as follows:

Close the window twice until itreaches the resistance and let itreverse. Close the window a third

time to the resistance. Briefly releasethe switch and press againimmediately. The window will override

the resistance and can then beclosed fully.

Resetting the electricwindow memory

Engine warning lamp

The engine warning lamp

should extinguish as soonas the engine starts. If itilluminates with the engine running, itindicates a malfunction. Have thischecked by an expert as soon aspossible. If it flashes, when driving,reduce the vehicle speedimmediately. If it continues to flash,avoid heavy acceleration ordeceleration. The engine will continue

to operate but it will have limitedengine power. Have your vehiclechecked by an expert immediately.

Frost warning lamp

WARNING

Even if the temperature rises toabove 4C there is no

guarantee that the road is free of

hazards caused by inclementweather.

For ambient temperaturesbetween 4C and 1C, theorange sign warns of

possible ice on the roads. From 0Cand below, the red sign warns of anincreased danger of icy roads.

Glow plug indicator lamp

If the glow plug indicatorlamp illuminates, wait until

the it extinguishes beforestarting.

Headlamp indicator lamp

Illuminates when the

headlamps are on dippedbeam or when the side andtail lamps are on.

Ignition warning lamp

WARNING

If the charging system drive belton the diesel engines is loose,

torn or broken, the servo assistance

for the braking system also no longeroperates.

If it illuminates whilst driving,switch off all unnecessaryelectrical equipment and

If the lamp stays on after

Outside air

Always keep the air intakes forwardof the front windscreen free of snow,leaves etc., to allow the system to

function effectively.

Recirculated air

Note:It is not recommended to use

recirculated air for more than 30minutes as there is no air exchangeand the windows may mist up.

When recirculated air is selected, onlythe air currently in the passengercompartment will be circulated.Outside air will not enter the vehicle.

Fresh air filter/activecarbon filter

The fresh air filter removes mostpotentially harmful particles such aspollen, industrial fallout and road dust

from the air entering the vehiclesinterior. The active carbon filterremoves odours.

In an automatic car wash, you shouldswitch off the ventilation blower toprevent the filter collecting wax

deposits.

Blower

The blower motor may emit noises.

Heating

The heating depends upon the

coolant temperature and is thereforeonly effective when the engine iswarm.

Air conditioning

Note:The air conditioning systemonly operates when the temperatureis above +5 C, the engine is runningand the blower is switched on.Operating the air conditioning leads
