Hallo my blom Charlene

jou dag of jou terapie was nie.

As Ouma in die oggend

Ouma Carin

“LOVE BEGINS BY TAKING CARE OF THE CLOSEST ONES, THE ONES AT HOME.” - MOTHER TERESA.

There's a very old song called "A House is Not a Home". It goes on to say "...when there's no one there..." Simply put, I believe the artist means that a house is just a structure, but a home is where your family, your love, your memories are, where strong relationships are created and bonds with your children develop.

Parents, home is the single most important place for our children to feel loved and accepted. We must embrace our children with love and acceptance for being exactly who they are. Home is the first place our children learn about being accepted and accepting others. Parents have the privileged responsibility to create a nurturing environment where each child feels wholly valued, safe and loved. A consistent structure is really the key ingredient in promoting a positive,

healthy lifestyle for children. Kids feel safe and secure when they have structure, as knowing what to expect on a regular basis is calming. Part of creating a positive home environment is creating a routine that your kids can count on, showing love and affection and making sure your kids feel that home is a place of happiness.

Step 1: Eliminate clutter and make use of your space in a constructive manner. Clutter and disorganization in your home and life can cause you to feel stress. When you feel stress, it can cause your kids to feel stress as well. By ridding yourself of clutter and organizing your home so that it is functional and inviting, you can eliminate some of your own stress and create a positive environment for your entire family.

Step 2: Generate a schedule that works for your family. Kids feel comfortable with routine and that helps them gain confidence and self-

esteem. Make sure that most days follow the same pattern. That pattern does not have to be the same as anyone else’s. Create a routine that your kids can count on, from waking up to doing chores to getting ready for bed.

Step 3: Set rules and limits, and let your children know what you expect of them. While your kids will undoubtedly attempt to test their limits as well as your patience, rules, expectations and consequences for misbehaviour help make a positive home environment. When your kids know that they can expect to lose a privilege or go to time-out when they misbehave, it’s a positive reminder that they are loved and cared for.

Step 4: Make time for family and affection. A positive home environment is one in which families spend time together, whether you play a game, watch a family movie together or just sit down and eat a meal as a family

while discussing your day. Give lots of hugs and show affection. Tell your kids you love them and make sure they know that even when they misbehave they are loved. “When it comes to developing character strength, inner security and unique personal and interpersonal talents and skills in a child, no institution can or ever will compare with, or effectively substitute for the home’s potential for positive influence.”StephanCovey

Page 6: Mom's notes augsept

Ankers aanslaan.

Dit laat ‘n mens goed voel, sê hy.

Buying your dream home is an excitingprospect for most people, especially ifthat home is your first home you are hunting for. But, the excitement can soon turn to dismay if you are not equipped with the correct information to assist you in making educated decisions on the buying process. You need to know, not only your limits, but your rights.

Do your homework to determine whatyou can afford, and what the actual costsof purchasing a property entails. In additionto the purchase price of the property, youwill also pay transfer duties and costs to the transferring attorneys, as wellas bond costs to the bond attorneys. Theamount of these costs can be obtainedfrom conveyancing attorneys, estate agentsand various property web sites. These costs will vary according to the purchase price of the property bought.

If the property is situated in a secureestate or sectional title complex, leviesto the Home Owners Association or theBody Corporate is payable in addition to your rates and taxes payable to themunicipality. If you are well informed about the bond payments that you can afford every month, as well as the additional costs, it will make your house hunting experience less time consuming and stressful. The next step in the process of finding a property is to make use of reputable and reliable estate agents. Make sure that the agent you deal with is properly qualified and has a solid reputation.

It is recommended that you visit various property websites too, as this willgive you a good idea of not only the available properties, but also the type of property and in which areas they are situated.

Find out from your bank or a bondoriginator what documents are requiredto apply for the bond. Make a file withall these documents, as well as a copy ofyour ID and ante nuptial contract if you aremarried out of community of property. If you are self employed, instruct yourbookkeeper or auditor to finalize yourfinancial statements and prepare a set of management statements as back up.

If you have a judgment on your name or a bad credit rating, take steps to have this fixed and attended to, as this will create complications with your bond application.Make sure what you marital status is,are you married in- or out of communityof property, or according to the lawsof another country such as Zimbabwe,Swaziland or the United Kingdom.

If you are married in community of property, the bond will be applied for in both your names, and thus all the information required by the bank will be applicable to both parties. If you are married out of communityof property or according to the laws ofanother country, the property will beregistered in the name of the person whosigns the offer to purchase.

This can be one or both of the marriage partners. This is also the case with partners in a relationship but not married, or married according to a civil union. In case of a traditional marriage, all such marriages concluded are regarded as in community of property, and the offer to purchase as well as the bond will have to be signed by the husband as well as the wife.

You will also be required to furnish thetransferring attorneys with a certificateof the Department of Home Affairsconfirming that the marriage wasregistered. If you want to buy the property in the name of a company or trust, make sure that you have an updated Letter ofAuthority that reflects the correct Trustees, and that the correct persons are registeredas directors of the company or membersof the Close Corporation.

It can take more than six weeks to register a company or Trust, which can severely delay a transfer. It is thus recommended

that you immediately attend to any registrations of trusts and companies if you decide to start hunting for a property.

Ensure that your tax and vatreturns are filed up to date and that you are registered as a tax payer, unless you areexempted from registration. Home Owners who purchase a propertyfor the sole purpose of using it as theirprimary residential property are exemptedfrom the payment of Capital Gains Tax inrespects to the first R 1,5 million profitmade from the sale of the property.

This exemption does not apply to Companies, Close Corporations and Trusts. It should be a consideration if you buy a property for the first time, and this will be your primary residence.

Becoming a first time home owner can bestress free if you are well informed and prepared.

People the world over prefer cooking with gas - and once you’ve cooked with gas, you’ll understand why.

It’s fast, efficient and delivers just the right amount of heat with utmost control for all types of cooking.

While electricity is still the most commonly used energy source for cooking in South African homes and guest houses, more and more people are starting to make the switch to gas. This is largely due to the changing energy landscape, marked by electricity supply constraints and rising costs. And, with the wide array of attractive built-in hobs and free standing stoves available today, gas cooking is a growing trend.

There are over nine million electric hotplates and stoves in use in households in South Africa. When all of them are in operation during peak periods, it places major strain on the country’s power supply. By using alternative fuel sourcesfor cooking such as Liquid

Petroleum Gas (LPG), you can help reduce the national electrical load. More importantly, you’ll be helping the environment. For every kWh of electricity you save by not using electricity for cooking, you’ll save 0.56kg of coal and 1.5 litres of water that would have been used to generate that power, andharmful CO2 emissions will be reduced by 1.03kg.

CAMP & GAS

WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE THE SWITCH• You won’t be so heavily dependent on electricity. Plus, if you keep a spare cylinder of LPG on hand, you are assured of an uninterrupted, reliable source fuel for cooking.

• Using alternative fuel sources helps reduce the negative environmental effects of producing electricity.

• You can shrink your cooking carbon footprint by as much as 50% simply by switching from electricity to gas for cooking.

• LPG is well suited for use indoors because it is inherently clean and burns without smoke or residual particulate matter.

• LPG is highly controllable and efficient with instant heat and immediate heat reduction for faster, more economical cooking.

• You’ll be doing your bit to save electricity and lighten the load on the country’s over-stretched supply – especially during peak usage times.

• LPG is completely safe like electricity, when used correctly.

• LPG is versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, from cooking and heating to refrigeration and even lighting.

• LPG is becoming an affordable alternative to electricity.

Vandag het ek vir my 'n klipkoppie opgesoek.

Hier waar alles aan my bekend is. Hier waar die ander diere my ken en aanvaar. Hier waar

my familie is.

Dis net woorde, maar my wêreld draai daarom. My HOME SWEET HOME.

ROBIN'S NESTDis byna soos 'n spel. 'n Skaakspel. Jou volgende skuif beïnvloed iemand anders se volgende strategie.

In my tweede-laaste twintig jaar verskaf ek

ONS IS ALMAL GROOT VISSE IN ONS EIE DAMMETJIES, DIS NET DIE GROTE VAN DIE DAM WAT VERSKIL.

Is your monthly budget dedicated mostly to plugging holes in outstanding debt? Do you find yourself having to make new debt in order to cover existing debt. Fuel price hikes and rising costs of living becoming a burden too heavy to carry?

Debt Solutions have a hassle free solution to rid you of overburdening debt. Fortunately the tables have now turned in favour of the consumer. This was confirmed with the implementation of The National Credit Act 34 of 2005. This Act is also the lifeline of all over-indebted consumers.

The implementation of the Act allows for a consumer to apply for debt review in terms of The National Credit Act. The Act in short is to promote social and economic welfare for all South Africans, a responsible, efficient, effective and accessible credit market and it is also to promote equity in the credit market.

What is the next step and how is the Act implemented?

STEP 1Schedule an appointment with our Registered Debt Counsellor. Couples married in Community of Property are required to jointly register and both need to sign the application. STEP 2An assessment will be made to determine if you are over-indebted, and to assess to what extent. This assessment, and whatever decisions emerge, will be derived from the information furnished to us. STEP 3You will complete and sign an application form for Debt Counselling, whereupon we will make immediate application for Debt Restructuring on your behalf.

HOW MUCH DEBT IS TOO MUCH AND WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

STEP 4Notification of your application will be submitted to all Credit Providers, the National Credit Regulator as well as Credit Bureaus. • All outstanding balances will have to be

verified with Creditors. • No additional applications for new credit is

permissible whilst under Debt Review. STEP 5A debt repayment plan will be discussed, thereafter a formal proposal will be sent to Creditors, as well as to a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA). Your Debt Review Application will also be referred to the Magistrate’s Court.

Our fundamental aim is to strive towards the Creditors agreeing to and accepting the re-structured terms. However, Creditors are not obliged to accept our settlement offer in which case our Debt Counsellor will submit the proposal to the Magistrates Court, thereby requesting an Order of the Court to enforce the restructuring. STEP 6The Debt Counsellor completes all administrative requirements, in compliance with the agreed re-payment structure. STEP 7A Clearance Certificate will be issued once all Debt Obligations are settled as per the Granted Court Order. The Debtor’s name will be cleared from the Credit Bureau listings.

Essential Benefits of Debt Counselling:Debt Solutions will strive towards creating affordable solutions, in the form of a planned and budgeted repayment strategy. The repayment strategy will be formulated to enable the Debtor to still maintain essential family cost-of-living and other necessary day-to-day expenses.

A FEW EXAMPLES OF THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS:• A slow draining tub when

you’re in a hurry to drop-off the kidz at school

• A running toilet while you try to sleep at night

• A flickering light in the kitchen while cooking

• A gate motor getting stuck in the drive-way when coming home after a hard day’s work

Here are a few tips to help you getting that feeling of “Home Sweet Home” back into your life…”

PLUMBING:A slow draining tub is another very common plumbing problem that can be easily fixed. Often the tub drain is full of hair which slows the water down as it drains out of the tub. If there is a tub stopper in the drain you may have to remove the tub stopper before getting to the hair clog. It is a good idea to clear out the debris in the tub drain on a regular basis even if the tub is not draining

slowly. If it is left too long it could end up clogging the drain completely.

Another common plumbing problem that many people are familiar with is a running toilet. There are various things that can be causing the toilet to run but they are easy to fix. The first step is to figure out what is the cause of the running toilet. Once you know which of the working parts of the toilet is causing the problem you can replace it or repair it and stop the running water.

PROBLEMS WITH LIGHT BULBS AND FIXTURES:Light bulbs are burning out at a high rate. There can be various reasons for this, depending especially on how widespread the problem is in your home and whether the bulbs you buy are ideal for your situation. Some lights are flickering or blinking.

This represents a poor connection somewhere along the circuit. If the blink

happens through much of the home, a main wire connection could be the one having the trouble.

AUTOMATIC GATE TRACKS:Sliding gates are the most common gates used for domestic and/ or commercial use. Sticks, leaves, stones and other obstructions could cause the gate to stick, and keep the motor from working smoothly.

Sliding gates tend to get these obstructions in or around the gate track, but a simple garden broom will do the trick in removing them.

“When we enter our homes, we want to get the feeling of “Ah, Home Sweet Home….” It is sometimes the most common and smallest problems that can cause the biggest headaches and can turn “Home Sweet Home” into “Nightmare on Elm Street”

Purpose, meaning, we strive to either attain or derive it. Society dictates that every one of us should at a certain stage have reached the point in our lives where we can look back and recognize that “aha” moment.

The great writer philosopher, Mark Twain said that there are two important days in your life namely the day you were born and the day you find out why. We are all supposed to have these in our lives - about our lives.

But do we? Really..?

The more society demands, the more you are inclined to push harder. “I have to do better, try harder and achieve more”. You are expected to be the “perfect” wife. Composed and gracious at all times – the trophy on the arm of your successful man. You are expected to be the “perfect” mother who handles her kids with love.

You also have a career in order to provide for your family and in-between this you have to have enough balance to still take care of yourself. One day you wake up and realise that THE BIG DREAM you had about what you would achieve in your life is destined to be just that. You adjust your dream and justify your failures just enough so that you can carry on with the daily demands being placed on you. In the mean time – life happens.

You are getting older with nothing much to show for it but an average career, a marriage where sentences are left uncompleted , kids that are ill disciplined due to your attempts to overcompensate for your lack of time spend with them, and a body that badly disgusts you because of serious neglect. Just fake it til you make it, you keep telling yourself.

And so we carry on - unhappy, unsatisfied trying keep smiling so that everything appears to be OK. BUT, does it really have to be like this? History has given us examples of people who achieved great things in life without having half of what we are complaining about – Mother Theresa, Mahatma Ghandi, Victor Frankl and Nelson Mandela. Both Ghandi and Mandela spent many years in prison with all their luxuries taken away, even the essentials of what most of us consider detrimental to survival was taken from them.

Victor Frankl –one of the great minds in Psychology, was taken prisoner as a Jew in the Nazi concentration camps. Whilst in prison he famously said, “they can take everything from me, but they will not take my dignity”. He discovered that man can survive almost anything if he has a purpose to live for.

To bring it back to everyday life – we need to re-look at all those annoying balls we are juggling daily. The system we are fighting against for survival and really look and see, what is important and what we can let go of.

Re-evaluate our priorities. We often base our happiness on acquiring possessions. “If I drive that BMW I will be happy… If I live in the ultra luxurious home, I will be happy….”and so we keep on setting unrealistic goals and monetary value to our happiness. If you are involved in a life threatening event, and you get the opportunity to plead for survival, what would you say? “Please spare my life, because I need to drive that BMW”.

We need to click on our own “refresh “buttons and look with fresh eyes and cleansed souls at every tiny detail of our life. We need to experience nature and beauty like a child and really appreciate it. We need to live in the moment, taking nothing for granted, living each day as if it were our last.

Happiness is not really that complicated – happiness is an internally generated process, a process that takes conscious thought and effort. Work at it – you will achieve it!

Alison Blair, is placed somewhere between corporate go-getter and loving mother, she is also known for her successes in the local marketing field with products such as the Red Aloe Awards and the Mark’it Expo for Nelspruit professionals looking to promote their business.

She has leveraged her strengths into that of employer, business owner, marketer and more recently publisher with the launch of the very successful Mom’s Notes magazine. She captains the creative think-engine TwoRedPens from where the magazine is published.

Alison graduated with a Bcom degree in Business Management and Marketing and then joined the Mopani Pharmacy group as Marketing Manager in 2005. Under her guidance the group reaped the benefits of the launch of a loyalty card in 2008 that still forms the backbone of its marketing strategy today.

Two years after the fact she took the bold step to owning her own business and has not looked back since. Through her company, TwoRedPens, the Lowveld has become accustomed to

unrestrained creative thinking with her top class team and sturdy marketing powers continuously raising the bar on competitors in the corporate marketing arena.

Their influence on the market did not go unnoticed and in 2012 TwoRedPens raked in the coveted HTS Business Support (Pty) Ltd/ KLCBT Entrepreneur Award at a prestigious gala event held locally in 2012. Alison, in turn, went on to represent the province as the Mpumalanga Finalist for the South African Business Woman of the Year 2013 Competition, hosted by the South African Council for Business Women.

She currently lives in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, and although she takes the city’s business world by storm, she has a soft spot for family.

She is the loving mother of a 5 year old boy and always finds time to spend with him. A successful business woman and mother, she has managed to balance both roles to perfection. She is an inspiration to all Mompreneurs out there and loved by everyone who knows her.

SERIES 1

10Alison’s topfor a successful balance in life and business.

tips

1. Absolve yourself of “mommy guilt.” Easier said than done, I know. Remember that you are doing the best you can. A desire for a career does not make you a bad mother, nor does a desire for work/life balance make you a bad employee.

2. Accept that there will be good and bad days. Lean on your support group when you need it, that’s what they are there for. Remember to be there when a friend or family member needs you as well. Receiving support in a small way can make a huge difference to your day and vice versa.

3. As Mom’s we instinctively place ourselves last on the ‘taking care’ list. We all know that this is tipping the balance in the wrong direction, but once we’re on that rollercoaster, how do you manage to squeeze in some ‘me’ time? When I do manage to ‘selfishly’ take some time out for myself, I come back to the office with fresh new ideas and energy to implement them. I am also able to spend more time with my son as I had been more productive during work. So give yourself a ‘time-out’ and reap the benefits later, you won’t regret it.

4. I constantly feel guilty for not getting my daily quota of veggies in. The only way I get that right is to - while packing my son’s school lunch - pack one for myself. I love raw veggies, so I chop some up and keep them with me during the day so when I need to snack I have the healthy option readily available.

5. Avoid starting your day on a frazzled note by getting organized the night before. Look over your children’s activities and pack the necessary sport kit and school books needed. Also have a look at your workday and mentally prepare for any meetings and things you need to get done. You can take this one step further and spend 15 minutes each Sunday reviewing the week’s schedule to avoid any surprise changes.

6. Find quality childcare. Start by creating a list of criteria that are important to you and your family and then schedule time to interview qualified childcare providers or to tour local pre-schools or crèches. Let your child spend time in your home with your top candidates, this “play-date” allows you to evaluate how the nanny interacts with your child in a less formal setting.

7. Avoid multitasking while you are spending time with your children. These intuitive little buggers can sense that your attention is divided, and they will try to gain back your full attention in less than appealing ways! Focus on quality rather than quantity, especially when you are juggling work at the same time.

8. Quality time with your family should be planned during the week, weekends and at least one longer holiday per year (if possible). Your children will have something to look forward to and ‘forgive’ the time you are spending at work.

9. Smartphones, can be a pain but I cannot function without mine. Having access to emails that can be checked and dealt with while you’re standing in a queue or waiting for someone is a time saving blessing.

10. Be proactive and creative at work. Many supervisors or employees are open to considering creative solutions (with regards to time etc.) when they are presented to them, but will not be so conscious as to offer them unasked.

Charity starts at home – and so does the beginnings of a healthy lifestyle. Involve the kids and alleviate the dependency on a public school system for education around health and wellness while at the same time spending quality time with them.

Gone are the days of the stereotypical stay-at-home mom, looking after the kids, doing homework and somehow managing to cook the food, sew up those socks and make sure the grocery cupboard stays stocked. Modern moms have careers to tend that steals personal “me time” from the mix.

Living in a high paced environment makes socializing challenging if not impossible to manage. This means health often takes the backseat. But it need not be this way. There are many ways in which you can adjust your daily activities ever so slightly and reap great rewards.

MAKE EXERCISE A LIFESTYLE

So how can small equate to wow?

While it may ring true that mom is just always there, catering to the family’s every need, she does need some time to spend on herself. For general health we need at least half an hour of moderate intensity physical activity for five or more days of the week. Let’s be conservative and call that 30min an hour, which will only take up 3% of your day.

There are another 8 hours of sleep which take 24%, that leaves us with 73% to do our daily activities (that’s quite a lot whereby to get things done). If time does not allow you to join a health club or a gym, take charge in another way and adjust your activities at home.

If you want to exercise to get rid of excess weight, then you’re eating habits are not up to par. You must not exercise to lose weight, you must exercise to improve performance or to improve your quality of life, meaning

to invest in you growing older. More than 80% of your health is based upon diet, not exercise. You really are what you eat.

Here are some simple tips and lifestyle adjustments to become more active in your daily routine.

STANDING IS BETTER THAN SITTING. Get into the shower instead of the bathtub. By standing and washing yourself you will get better balance, coordination and awareness (wet and slippery floor) and use much more effort than sitting in the bathtub and rinse with your own dirty water.

CARRIERS NOT STROLLERSIf you still have a baby that cannot walk yet. Put them in a baby chair and carry them to the car, instead of putting them in a pram and pushing them around. You will build more strength and muscle endurance and burn more calories.

THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOMGo for the basket and leave out the trolley. First you will just put in the necessary and what you went for and not a lot of luxuries and unwanted stuff. Secondly you will also build strength and a better core by carrying the weight one side will pull you to the opposite and start correcting your posture. Even if you did use the trolley, after paying at the till take the bags in your hand and carry it to your car as the same principles apply.

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT Disconnect the electric gate. Get out of the car and push open the gate. Carry the groceries yourself and get off the couch and ask the rest of the family if you can make them coffee and stop giving orders. Use the stairs and not the elevator.

By changing little things in our daily lifestyle we can make a difference in our fitness and health. Start doing these things and then as you progress you will see that the motivation to join a fitness facility will come by itself. One of the world leading fitness guru Arnold Schwarzenegger ones said “Never blame the equipment”.

Why do we always say, “before starting an exercise or fitness program, consult a medical practitioner,” but when we walk into a fast food shop or brewery we do not think of the health consequences?

Have a great change.

Appetite and hunger can vary considerably for kids.Toddlers have changeable appetites. Growth spurts and changing activity levels during the day can result in a large appetite for a while, followed by small and picky eating soon after.

The evening meal may cause the most concern, when children may be tired or not hungry. Restricted diets are not recommended for children, as they may limit the energy and nutrients needed for healthy growth and development

Be a role model for your child. If you eat well, they may copy you.

HEALTHY SNACKSSnacks between meals are an important part of the day for children, so keep these as healthy, nutritious and as interesting as possible.

SUGGESTIONS INCLUDE: • Fresh and dried fruits &

nuts • Whole wheat crackers with

cheese, peanut butter or hummus

• Yoghurt (this can be frozen instead of ice cream)

CHILDREN AND HEALTHY EATING

• Raisin bread, fruit loaf or toasted English muffins

• Marie or digestive biscuits, scones or buns

• Dip and biscuits or vegetable

• Salty popcorn varieties

GLYCAEMIC INDEXWhat are carbohydrates?Carbohydrates are natural substances that we need to ‘get up and go’. Carbohydrates are the only fuel that the brain and body cells can use, and the main source of energy for our muscles.

We get our carbohydrates from starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, cereals, biscuits and potato. Sugars; such as table sugar or the natural sugars in fruit, milk and yoghurt. No matter what your carbohydrate source is, your body will use it for energy.

Any parent knows that too much added sugar in their child’s diet is not good for them. Too much refined starch in their diets is just as harmful, yet it often slips under the radar.

WHAT IS GLYCAEMIC INDEX (GI)?When we eat carbohydrates, our digestive system breaks them down into glucose. The glucose then travels in our blood to the cells of our body. Our cells use this glucose to produce energy.Different carbohydrates are turned into glucose at different rates. This means that different carbohydrates cause blood glucose levels to go up and down at different rates.

The glycaemic index (GI) ranks foods on a scale from 0-100, based on what effect the food has on blood glucose levels:• Foods with a high GI (70-

100) cause a large and fast rise and fall in blood glucose.

• Foods with a low GI (0-55) cause a more steady and long-lasting rise and fall in blood glucose levels.

High-GI foods are useful for a quick energy boost. Low-GI foods are broken down slowly for steady, long-lasting energy. Including more low-GI foods than high-GI foods throughout the day will help keep your child’s energy levels steady.

BENEFITS OF LOW GIBenefits of a low-GI diet include:• longer-lasting energy, which can

improve concentration levels at school and performance during sport

• the feeling of being full for longer, which can help with weight control

• a higher number of essential fatty acids in the blood.

USING GI TO CREATE A HEALTHY FAMILY DIETMaking healthy food choices isn’t just about considering the GI value; healthy eating also includes plenty of low-fat foods and vegetables, salads, high-fibre foods and good quality lean protein sources such as lean beef, chicken and fish.

WHEN TO EAT YOUR CARBOHYDRATES The ideal is to eat three regular meals (and possibly snacks), with an even spread of carbohydrates throughout the day. This will lead to more even blood glucose levels and provide fairly steady energy levels.

MOM'S DRIVING SAFE

I-PLEDGE ~ TO MAKE SURE MY CHILD IS ALWAYS RESTRAINED IN THE CORRECT SEAT BELT BECAUSE...

Adult seat belts are not designed for children as they don't sit across the right parts of the body. If a child isn't in the right booster or car seat, they can be injured by the seat belt in an accident.

The law says that children under 3 are not allowed to travel anywhere in a car without an appropriate child restraint – usually a baby or child car seat. This is also very good safety advice.

Trying to hold a small baby in an accident at 50km/h would be like trying to lift 8 bags of cement at the same time.

Safety reminders – how to stop children from being hurt in and around cars.

A child can legally travel in the front of the car but it’s always safest for them to travel in the back if possible.

Most accidents happen in short journeys close to home so make sure car seats are easy to fit – If it’s hard to fit then it may be tempting not to use it on shorter journeys.

Try a car seat before you buy it, fix the restraint into the car as tightly as you can and check that it doesn’t move to the front or side and make sure the

seat buckle doesn’t rest on the frame of the child seat. If you are having problems with your car seat you can try a different position in the car. If your partner, friend or a grandparent takes your child in their car, make sure that they are using the right seat and that they put your child in it properly on every journey. If you give them your seat when you drop off your child, be sure that it fits their car and they know how to use it.

As children of different ages need different gross and fine motor stimulation to help them achieve their age appropriate milestones the programme is broken into two age appropriate groups:

Tiny Tots (1 to 1½ Years)Tots (1½ to 3½ Years)

Moms come with their tots once a week for two hours of fun and learning. Classes are in the mornings or afternoons (or even Saturdays in some areas), and are limited to 12 Moms with their Tots.

During the Workshops, Mothers are actively involved in a non-intrusive, supportive way which encourages the Tots self-motivation and allows for bonding between them.

The Tiny Tots programme caters especially for little ones in the 12-18 month age group, allowing for their shorter attention span, with special emphasis on gross motor co-ordination. Hands on activities and "action play" are therefore of shorter duration.

As babies of different ages need different gross and fine motor stimulation to help them achieve their age appropriate milestones the programme is divided into three different age-appropriate groups:

Tiny Babes (2-6 Months)Babes (6-9 Months)Busy Babes (9-12 Months)

Mothers attend workshops with their baby once a week for, on average, one and a half hours. Workshops are offered every weekday and some franchises even offer Saturday workshops.

During this time moms get to learn how to stimulate their baby in a hands-on, fun, professional and social environment.

The Programme is designed to provide activities which help to stimulate gross and fine motor milestones; the areas of sensory development; progression of play; emotional and social development and parental education.

Any mother that has read a little bit about babies (even if it is just the label on the formula container), will be aware that breast is best.

But did you know that whilst a baby breastfeeds, they get much more than just the optimal nutrition that breast milk has to offer? In BabyGym, we learn that by simulating breastfeeding any parent can give these benefits to their babies.

HOLD YOUR BABY CLOSEMothers who bottle-feed can, however, also reap the benefits of the fact that babies are comforted by their mothers’ smell. When you bottle-feed, hold your baby close, so that he or she can be surrounded by your smell. Because this smell is familiar, it is calming to the babies and calm babies have a better rhythm when feeding and will consequently feed better and swallow less air.

You can even lay your baby on your bare chest, so that your baby can even

have the valuable skin on skin-closeness he or she would have had, if breastfed.

The distance from a mother’s breast to their eyes is the perfect distance for optimal visual stimulation. Your eyes are the perfect mobile, white and black, it moves and shines. Therefore, when you are feeding your baby, hold them the perfect distance from your face and make eye contact and as a result develop their sight. Eye contact is another way to relax a baby.

DEVELOP LANGUAGEWhen babies feed, they are busy strengthening their mouths, in order for them to be able to talk one day. It is therefore very important to teach babies communication skills when feeding them. Make eye contact and talk to them, while feeding.

DO THEY DRINK CORRECTLY?It is very important to make sure that your baby is sucking correctly. Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding, your baby should latch correctly and have the correct rhythm when drinking. Babies who do not will often struggle from wind, cramps, colic or reflux.

It is good to consult a BabyGym instructor or breastfeeding specialist (even if you do not breastfeed); to make sure that your baby is latching

GET THE MOST OUT OF FEEDING-TIME and not just breastfeeding-time

By Lorraine van NiekerkBabyGym Instructor, Nelspruit

correctly and drinking well. Babies, who have a problem with these, may develop a speech impediment later. If you are bottle feeding your baby’s bottle teat should look like a human nipple and it is also beneficial if it is peristaltic.

OPENING THEIR EARSAnother benefit that correct sucking has for baby is; it clears their sinus passages and accordingly their inner-ears, hence reducing the chances for inner ear infections.

CHANGE SIDESYou would automatically switch sides mid-feeding or from feed to feed, when breastfeeding. BabyGym teaches us that when changing babies from side to side, they will turn their faces to the other side, giving the other side of their necks a good stretch; they will face the world with a different eye and consequently develop a different part of their brains.

So, when you are bottle feeding, remember to swop sides mid-feeding.

In conclusion, whether you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, remember the reason for feeding babies and feed them with love and you will get the most out of feeding!

The sequence and duration of your baby’s development phases hold the key to performance

at school 6 years later? Reaching each milestone indicates a brain development milestone.

BabyGym 2: Firm Foundations

• For five weeks mom and baby share quality time in a structured and fun way

• Only one 1 hour once a week

• Learn a new technique in every session to stimulate baby’s senses, brain & muscles

• Moms, dads and caregivers are welcome

• Babies between birth and walking are welcome too!

Week 1 – The importance of touch and massage

A relaxed baby eats well, sleeps longer and develops better?

Week 2 – The importance of movement and balance

Movement develops stronger muscles and a positive self- image?

Week 3 – The importance of sucking, suckling and neck control

Stimulating the senses of taste and smell helps the development of the eyes and ears to make

reading, writing, spelling and maths easy one day?

A strong and stable neck is a major milestone?

Week 4 – Why both eyes and both ears must work together

Babies prefer the sound of the human voice to any other sound?

The eyes are to the brain what the mouse is to the computer?

Strong tummy and back muscles help the eyes to turn in all

directions – ready to learn and shine with intelligence?

Week 5 – Prevent hyperactivity and poor concentration – coordinate and control those arms

and legs

Babies need to move a lot before they are 2 years old so that they can sit still in school one

day? Week 5 saves you money – please do NOT buy reclining chairs, walking rings or dangling

contraptions – a six-pack and straight back starts with tummy time on a blanket? Low muscle

tone can be prevented?

All you need to know is how to play!

Graduation Day

Mom, dad and baby get their first certificate!

Remember: What you do or don’t do, impacts

on your baby’s braindevelopment

– Do BabyGym and build a better brain!

Baby’s first two years are brimming with

opportunities for movement and play

to ensure optimal development of your baby’s

brain and limbs, social & language skills, feelings,

& thought processes.

Unfortunately, we as parents sometimes

miss these opportunities.

Kindermusik is a music and movement programme for all children from newborn to seven years. Teaching your child early language, literacy, maths, social-emotional,

motor, cognitive and physical skills through music.

By moving and dancing to music and playing simple instruments, children improve their gross and fine motor skills. Activities that encourage freedom within a fun and friendly structure spark their creativity. And of course, they develop a lifelong love of music.
