How do we define international education?

Think in terms of three dimensions….

How we relate to a shared

humanity

How we relate to our own culture

How we relate to others

Service as action

• MYP learning extends beyond the intellectual to include not only socially responsible attitudes but also thoughtful and appropriate action, initiated by the student as a result of the learning process.

• This action will extend the student’s learning, or it may have a wider social impact.

• Both inquiry and action will clearly look different within and between each age group.

• MYP schools can meet the challenge of offering all learners the opportunity to choose to act; to choose not to act; to decide on their actions; and to reflect on these actions

These visuals should be available. We can make them download them and fill them out individually (i´ve included the template in the file) but ideally these would be on a "wall" that participants simply write on and they can see each other’s comments.

This could be a visual template that participants can write on. If not possible, we can have a Venn diagram that participants can fill out and upload (as in module 3).

Module 5, part 4 – Practical application 1. MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their

developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community2. Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3. Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the

classroom and what they encounter in the community4. When we learn by doing, we remember.

This activity is based on Bono´s famous book, “The Six Thinking Hats” that explores six distinct thinking directions that challenge the brain. Some “hats” encourage us to think in ways we are conformable, while others might feel unnatural. Underneath each hat you will find a question about action. “Wear” at least three hats and respond to the stimulus question. For the case of the red hat (based on intuitive or instinctive reactions ), you must post your response in less than 30 seconds.

Gabriela Gonzalez Vaillant
Ideally participants will only see color hats in the screen. Once they click on the hat, they are taken to the specific forum where the question is posed.I do not have copyright over image of hat. We might have to make our own!

Module 5, part 4 – Practical application 1. MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self

and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community2. Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3. Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn

in the classroom and what they encounter in the community4. When we learn by doing, we remember.

Action can become part of the MYP unit-planning process at several points:

adding specific learning engagements to meet curriculum objectives through principled action,

through service with others; providing students with ideas and opportunities through which they might

choose to take or organize action themselves through service with others.

Go back to the unit you designed and ask yourself:

1. To what extent does this unit engage my students in principled action? 2. What can I do to use this unit to initiate service? 3. Make necessary amendments and make sure to register the changes in

another colour

You will need to consider stage 2 of the unit planner, which includes: Content, Learning process and resources. Need more information on stage 2? Click here.

This is the same feedback as in Module 1 and 2. It would be good to keep this consistent at the end of each module - it provides feedback for both participant and facilitator.
