The Warsaw Conference onMiddle East Security, led bythe United States, showed

once again that Israel isn’t theproblem when it comes to peace inthe Middle East, but that the rootof the problem is much deeper. Not long ago, it was unthinkablethat representatives from Israelwould sit down with representa-tives from the Arab nations to dis-cuss the problems in the MiddleEast. They were brought togetherby a common enemy; the IranianShiite-Muslim Republic.Bahrain’s foreign minister re-

leased this statement about theconference: “It’s the poisonousIranian money that is blocking theresolution of the Palestinian con-flict. Our country is also under aconstant threat.”

Bahrain isn’t the only countrythat feels threatened; the UnitedArab Emirates, Oman, Yemen,Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan allhave that same feeling.America’s Secretary of State,

Pompeo, stated, “You can'tachieve stability in the Middle Eastwithout confronting Iran. It’s justnot possible. Iran has a maliciousinfluence in Lebanon, Yemen,Syria, and Iraq.” The three H’s—Houthi, Hamas and Hezbollah—are a real threat, but there areothers, too.According to Pompeo, America

is determined to develop a newcollaboration among all inter-ested nations. It won’t follow thetraditional patterns, but will instead seek new ways to bringnations together to solve the

problems. No country can affordto miss out, because it involvesthings that affect everyone. At the following security con-

ference in Munich, Iran was alsoat the center of the debate. Therewere differences of opinion be-tween the United States and theEuropeans with regard to Iran, asthe Americans pointed out thatthe threats to peace that Iran iscultivating in the Middle Eastaren’t just provoking the nearbyArab countries. Those threats arehaving a much wider influence. From a biblical perspective, the

events that are now being ob-served in and around the MiddleEast, where coalitions andtreaties are being formed, are areminder of the prophecies inEzekiel 38. One group of Sunni-Islamic nations, lying south of Is-rael and led by Saudi Arabia andEgypt, feels threatened by Iran.Another coalition is developingnorth of Israel, led by Iran. It’snot quite clear where Russia andTurkey will end up in these devel-opments, because their differingconceptions of the Islamic reli-

gion aren’t particularly suited toeach other. It’s easy to envision, however, that their common in-terests could eventually bringthem together. Is it possible that the two en-

emy factions that are formingwithin Islam, represent the kingof the north and the king of thesouth, as described in Daniel11:40-45? After all, these versesbegin with, “At the time of theend…”We are commanded to pay at-

tention to the signs of the times, especially when they have to dowith events in the Middle Eastand of which Jesus warned us. Hesaid we are not to fear, when wehear of wars and rumors of wars, because all of that must happen. In other words, nothing is goingto happen that He doesn’t allow, and He will care for His own.In the knowledge that God is

present in all these threateningdevelopments, and that He is ful-filling His plan and His purposes,Shalom,

We’re often asked reproachfully, what gives us the right to relate the prophecyof the gathering of Israel to the present? There have always been return migra-tions to Israel, even if they were on a smaller scale (e.g. from the Babyloniancaptivity). An explanation.

BY JOHANNES PFLAUM

The prophet Isaiah announced,“And he shall set up an

ensign for the nations, and shallassemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersedof Judah from the four corners

of the earth” (Isaiah 11:12).There’s only one single chapterof world history where we canspeak of a worldwide return toIsrael from all four directions. Ifthe Jews returned to their land

before the time of Christ, thisalways happened from one direc-tion (Babylon) and to a compar-atively small extent. But at theend of the 19th century, as a resultof the sudden emergence of Zion-ism, the worldwide return of theJews began, just as the Bible hadpredicted. At first, this streamwas still relatively small, but afterthe terrible events of NationalSocialism, it swelled rapidly. It was January 5, 1895, on the

parade grounds of the MilitaryAcademy in Paris. A French officerwas publicly stripped of his armyrank. His badge was torn fromhis uniform and his sword wasbroken with a drastic gesture.Additionally, the enraged crowdthat had gathered shouted, “Deathto the Jew!”What was going on? Highly

explosive confidential documentsfrom French counterintelligencehad been delivered to the Germansfrom somewhere within the Gen-eral Staff. Colonel Sandherr, headof the French counterintelligence

unit, was a staunch anti-Semite.When he came across the Jewishname Dreyfus while lookingthrough the agency’s list of names,it was clear to him: “Only Jewscould have committed such atremendous betrayal!”Alfred Dreyfus was convicted

in a scandal-ridden trial withoutreal evidence and banished toDevil’s Island, where he sufferedfrom the tropical climate andpoor prison conditions. Picquart, the new head of French counter-intelligence, later uncovered thereal culprit. Although he provedDreyfus’ innocence, no one wasinterested in hearing it. The Jewhad to stay on Devil’s Island. Pic-quart didn’t let up. In 1906, hefinally succeeded: In place of hisdegradation, Dreyfus was reha-bilitated and appointed a Knightof the Legion of Honor.A correspondent from a Vien-

ing raised many questions forhim. He began to think abouthis people scattered all over theworld. No homeland, no stateto defend or advocate for theinterests of its citizens. And sothe Viennese correspondent,Theodor Herzl, wrote The JewishState, the pamphlet which madehim the founder of Zionism and, from a human perspective, thespiritual father of Israel’s nationalrebirth. After Titus destroyed Jerusalem,

Israel’s structure had apparentlygone up in smoke. Since then, under foreign occupation, there

was also no longera Jewish state. Butnow the predictionsof Ezekiel 37 seemedto emerge withTheodor Herzl. Thedried bones werestirring. Accordingto prophetic testi-mony, God usedHerzl to begin the

event which would usher in thecoming of the Messiah: the gath-ering of Israel!Theodor Herzl’s Zionism her-

alded the spiritual birth of aJewish national homeland. Butit said nothing about the locationof this homeland. So, it wasbrought to the Zionist Congressin Basel, Switzerland. FritzGrünzweig gives the report ofa visitor: Jews from all overEurope came together for thisCongress (merchants, bankers,etc.). They discussed variouspossibilities for a Jewish home, such as Madagascar or Africa.

Cover StoryIn the midst of the discussion,an old rabbi called out the wordsof the Psalm: “If I forget thee,O Jerusalem, let my right handforget her cunning” (137:5).Then these astute men rose, fellweeping into each other’s armsand said, “Come, let’s go to theland of the fathers.” So, ratherthan founding a Jewish nationalhomeland, the State of Israel wasresurrected in its original land.In 1895, the czarist secret

police in Paris also fabricatedthe so-called Protocols of theElders of Zion. The fake writingsrecorded the purported plans ofthe Jews for conspiracy andtakeover of world government. These supposedly secret proto-cols served as an excuse forpogroms against Eastern Euro-pean Jews. They are an anti-Semitic “standard work” thatwould also play an importantrole in the Third Reich. To thisday, the Protocols are still readin Arab countries. They alsomention alleged Enlightenmentbooks on Freemasonry as sup-porting “evidence.”

In 1905, the Jews were blamedfor Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, and later alsobecame the scapegoat for the out-break of the Revolution. Between1917 and 1920, at least 75,000Jews were slaughtered in Ukrainealone. During this time, the ter-ritory of Israel received a waveof Jewish immigration from Rus-sia and Europe. Tel Aviv wasbuilt, and the first kibbutzimwerefounded. In addition, the FirstWorld War broke out. TheOttoman Empire (what was leftof it) went under. For 400 years, the land of Israel had been underOttoman rule; now it became asort of no-man’s-land under theLeague of Nations. Englandreceived the Mandate for Palestinein 1920. This was the first pre-requisite for the founding of Israel. The Jews had been given the

right to a national homeland inthe area designated “Palestine”under the Balfour Declaration of1917. As a consequence, a newwave of immigration beganbetween 1919 and 1932. Withthe increasing return of Jews to

their homeland, the Jewish-Arabconflict developed. In the shortspan of time between the twoWorld Wars, the English dividedthe territory of Palestine for polit-ical reasons. Transjordan emergedfrom the larger of the two partsin 1922.Then the Nazi regime in Ger-

many plunged the world into acatastrophe that far exceeded thecruelty and casualties of the FirstWorld War. Anti-Judaism reachedits peak during this time. Hitler’sterrible Holocaust aimed to com-

pletely annihilate the Jews. He hadsix million Jews gruesomely mur-dered in concentration camps, including one million children.Theophil Wurm, bishop of theregional Protestant church in Würt-temberg, was one of the few whotook a clear stand against the Naziregime. When the terrible carpetbombing of German cities began,he said, “Why is this fire comingfrom heaven? It’s the punishmentfor what we’re doing to the Jews.”The result of the Second World

War was exactly the opposite ofwhat Hitler wanted. Instead ofthe total annihilation of the Jews, the state of Israel experienced itsnational resurrection three yearslater. Ezekiel 37 became a reality:Out of the field of dead bones(Auschwitz, Dachau, Bergen-Belsen, etc.) came the nearly-deadsurvivors. It was like the openingof the graves (vv. 11-12). Six hun-dred thousand Jews founded theState of Israel—the tenth part ofthe Jewish victims murderedunder the Hitler regime.

Cover StoryThe founding of the State of

Israel shows us how the livingGod, in His sovereignty, used thevery things directed against Himin order to achieve His purpose. The man who wanted the totalannihilation of Judaism was aninadvertent contributor to Israel’sresurrection. And when the neigh-boring Arab peoples attackedthe still-young Jewish state inthe 1948 War of Independence, the First Israeli air force fighterplanes were modified Messer-schmitt 109s of Czech produc-tion. Thus, the standard fighterplane of Hitler’s air force had asignificant share in the defenseof Israel’s existence. As Psalm 2states, “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vainthing? The kings of the earth setthemselves, and the rulers takecounsel together, against theLORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bandsasunder, and cast away their cordsfrom us. He that sitteth in theheavens shall laugh: the LORD

shall have them in derision” (vv.1-4).We see an impressive sign of

the fulfillment of Biblical prophecyin the resurrection of the Stateand people of Israel. The firstphase of Ezekiel 37 has becomea reality. The bones of the deadhave come together, and fleshand skin have grown on them. With this, we wait for the fulfill-ment of the second phase: Israel’ssalvation and the consequent con-version and spiritual renewal bythe coming Lord. Our Lord willalso redeem His Word here—andthis could happen very soon.“And ye shall know that I am

the LORD, when I have openedyour graves, O my people, andbrought you up out of yourgraves. And shall put my spiritin you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your ownland: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it, andperformed it, saith the LORD”(Ezek 37:13-14).

The Jews had rejected Jesus and paid no heed to the witness of the

Holy Spirit during the time of the Apostles. Therefore, God put them

on the sideline. They were not condemned, merely set aside for a

period of time. Israel’s attitude of rejection and continuing lack of

repentance led to God allowing them to go their own way.

The first persecution of Chris-tians and Jews took place in

37 AD, during the rule of Caligula.By the year 44 AD, the kingdomof Judea was completely underRoman control. In 54 AD, whenNero was Emperor of Rome, socialunrest and discord erupted inIsrael. At this time, Jews took partin the persecution of Christians.Gessius Florus, cruel and greedy, was the Roman procurator inJudea from 64—66 AD. When hetook gold from the temple treasure, claiming it was for the emperor,a great outcry arose among thepeople. Chaos and plunder pre-vailed, and the usual tribute toRome was withheld. Rome retal-iated during this time, by incar-cerating and crucifying many ofthe Jews. All of these factors ledto the Great Jewish Revolt. A rad-ical group called the Zealotsdecided to drive the Romans outby force. They took the CastleAntonia and invaded the FortressMasada. In 68 AD, the Romans under

Vespasian initiated a campaignagainst Israel, seizing everythingexcept Jerusalem and Masada. In

April of 70 AD, the Roman armyof 100,000 men advanced throughGalilee and Judea to Jerusalem, against fierce Jewish resistance.Jerusalem was besieged andstarved. Within the city itself, threeJewish factions—one of them theradical Zealots—fought amongthemselves, thus diminishing theirown strength and resources.Unimaginable conditions soondeveloped, with such terriblefamine that it induced parents toeat their dead children in orderto stay alive. These were the daysforetold by the Lord Jesus 40 yearsearlier, when he shed bitter tearsfor Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-44;21:20-24).Titus, leader of the massive

Roman forces, called several timeson the city to surrender, but thebesieged population declined. Theybelieve that God would neverallow the holy city and the mag-nificent temple, the very house ofGod, to fall into the hands of theenemy. When a final offer fromTitus was rejected and laced withinsults, he refused to take respon-sibility for any of the consequences.Following a siege of roughly five

months, the Romans stormed thecity and Jerusalem went up inflames. The city was destroyed tothe very ground. The temple alsofell victim to the soldiers, whowere drunk and crazed with vic-tory, even though they had beenexpressly commanded to sparethe splendid temple, which wasnumbered among the wonders ofantiquity. Barely 40 years after Christ’s

words concerning the temple, itcame about just as He said: “VerilyI say unto you, There shall notbe left here one stone uponanother, that shall not be throwndown” (Matt 24:2). The Jewswere expelled from their country, their cities razed, their orchardslaid waste, and their wells filledwith stones. Everything possiblewas done to render the land unin-habitable, so that probably noteven 15,000 Jews remained. Therest of the people were scatteredthroughout the then existingworld.

The Jewish historian FlaviusJosephus writes about this timeas follows: “2,700,000 people hadgathered together in Jerusalem forthe last Passover feast. Thus, thenumber of people who perishedwas greater than that of any othercatastrophe ever devised by manor God. The Romans killed partof the population, so that one hadto climb over corpses in the streets. The remaining Jews were takenprisoner. Then the Romans set fireto the whole city. Jerusalem fellat the exact hour in which sacrificeswere normally offered. Jerusalemitself was now the sacrifice!” (TheJewish Revolt VI: 4-5).Several centuries earlier, Daniel

had already prophesied that thepeople of the coming ruler (Rome)would destroy the city and theholy temple (Dan 9:26). Four yearslater, Masada was seized as well;Judea became a Roman province.Since Jerusalem as well as the tem-ple had been destroyed, a newspiritual center developed in Jam-

nia. By 132 AD, the Jews, havingrecovered in military strength, renewed their revolt against theRomans. Their leader was BarKokhba, and many thought thathe was the Messiah to finally freethem of the troublesome Romans. However, this uprising wassquelched by Hadrian in 135 AD.Jerusalem was once again ran-sacked and renamed Aelia Capi-tolina by the Romans, so as tofinally wipe out anything thatcould be a reminder of the Jews. For the same reason, Judea washenceforth called Philistia, in LatinPalaestina. The Jews themselveswere given over into slavery, andwere thus totally cut off from theland promised to their fathers. The Jews’ hypothesis had been

in error. They had assumed thattheir God would never allowJerusalem and the temple to bedestroyed, nor for them to bedriven from the land of theirfathers. But had they not turnedtheir back on this God a long timeago? And now they expected Hishelp?Jerusalem, the city of David,

lay in ruins, and the temple, where

God once lived in the midst ofHis people, was now a place ofdevastation (see Micah 3:9-12;Jer 7:1-11). Here, centuries later,Israel’s archenemies erected theirmosques, a grievance to manyJews unto this day. These mosquesmight also serve as a reminderand memorial of their rejectionof the Messiah. The Jews, whowere meant to testify of the onetrue God among the nations, werenow slaves of those very heathenpeople.Should Satan be victorious,

after all? No longer an Israel, aJudea or a God? Definitely not!It is simply fascinating to readand observe how God writes his-tory. And He foresaw the eventualreturn of his people: “For thechildren of Israel shall abide manydays without a king, and withouta prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and with-out an ephod, and withoutteraphim. Afterward shall thechildren of Israel return, and seekthe LORD their God, and Davidtheir king; and shall fear theLORD and his goodness in thelatter days” (Hosea 3:4-5; cf.

Deuteronomy 28:64; Ezekiel36:19-24).The second exile began in 70

AD, and was on a far greater scalethan the first one in Babyloniancaptivity. The Romans at that timeslaughtered hundreds of thousands, and further took hundreds of thou-sands captive, sending them asslaves in all directions. Propheciesonce again precisely fulfilled. Jewswere not allowed to set foot intoJerusalem until the 4th century, and circumcision was prohibited.

Absolutely nothingshould be left to bringthe Jews to mind. Yetdespite the worldwideDiaspora, this nationhas never lost itsunique identity. Andthis, too, had been fore-told (Numbers 23:9).Usually, when whole

nations are vanquishedand scattered, the peo-

ple enter into mixed marriagesand become integrated with thenew society in which they live. Itis generally accepted that it is notpossible for a nation in exile tomaintain its identity for longerthan 200 years. Yet the Jews, dis-persed into many directions, con-tinued to be Jews—by now forover 2,000 years. Whether inEurope, Asia, America, Africa orAustralia, they retain their lan-guage, culture and religion. Overthe centuries, Jews were maligned

Yet despite the worldwide Diaspora, this nation has never lost its unique identity. And this, too, had been foretold (Numbers 23:9).

as a sect and deprived of legal rightsas citizens. They were seen as totallyresponsible for and guilty of cru-cifying Christ. The Church nowconsidered itself Israel’s spiritualheir, and taught that Israel had lostits special status to Christendom.Around 1,000 AD, persecution ofJews sprang up everywhere. In1096, a holy war was declaredagainst Israel. Jews were killed ifthey did not submit to Christianbaptism, and were burdened withheavy monetary fees, which wereused for financing the Crusades. In France all Jews, estimated at100,000, were robbed of their prop-erty and expelled from the countryin 1306 AD. Their wealth went tothe king’s treasury. After 10 yearsthey were allowed to return, butwere still persecuted by fanaticalpriests and their followers. When the plague raged in Euro-

pean countries around 1350 AD,25% of the population perished. The Jews, however, had few losses, possibly do to their purificationand dietary laws. Thus, they wereaccused of introducing the plagueand of poisoning food and wells. As a result, they suffered torture

and burning at the stake. Twothousand Jews died this way inStrasbourg. In the year 1560 AD,Jews were expelled from Pragueand their residential area of 3,000houses was incinerated. The valueof their confiscated property cameto 50 million Krone. Spain alsotook a hostile stance toward Jewsfor centuries. The Church perse-cuted, murdered and exiled theJews, while the crown cashed inon their wealth. History aboundswith horrific details of Jewishsuffering. The last example of hate for

Israel is the unique and shamefulone of Germany, during the years1933—1945. About six millionJews were exterminated in a dev-ilish manner, and 1.5 million ofthese were children. Still, the Jew-ish path of suffering is not yet atan end. As long as Israel doesnot repent and accept the Messiah, its circumstances will not change(1 Thess 2:15-16; Jer 5:19). Butwith giant steps, we are approach-ing that day—the day in whichthis nation will finally recognizeand accept its Messiah.

It also states that Jews and Christians were “mostlytreated well” by Arabs throughout history. It does not mentioncapital taxes and many pogroms perpetrated against Jewsin Arab countries before and during the flight of at least800,000 Jews from those countries in the 20th century. Today,

states that David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, declared statehood after “Jewish militias carried out murdersin Arab villages, and hundreds of thousands of Palestiniansfled and settled in refugee camp across the border.” That bookdoes not mention Arab atrocities during the same conflict.

The Dutch education ministry has a relatively liberal policyas to which textbooks may be used as teaching materials, placing such choices at the discretion of schools and, attimes, individual teachers.

Commentary: With the birth of Israel, so-called inter-national law changed. If one were to apply this law toGermany, then East Prussia would still be part of Ger-many, instead of Lithuania, Russia, and Poland. Thisis applicable also to many nations, in particular on theEuropean continent. Here we see camouflaged anti-Semitism. It seems

that in all circumstances, Bible prophecy must notbe fulfilled. That is the spirit of Antichrist. Wayback at the beginning, God made this promise toAbraham’s descendants: “And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou

art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; andI will be their God” (Genesis 17:8). 6947(See Why Jerusalem Is Jewish, Item #1070,

Today’s Iran has a population of about 82 million, compared to Israel’s 8.3 million. These figures areknown to Iran, yet their chance to beat Israel militarilyis virtually zero. But there is more, and that is in the unseen world.

Prophecy is being fulfilled continuously, and the Godof Israel today is the same as in Elisha’s day: “And heanswered, Fear not: for they that be with us are morethan they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, andsaid, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see.And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; andhe saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horsesand chariots of fire round about Elisha. And whenthey came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord,

and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote themwith blindness according to the wordof Elisha” (2 Kings 6:16-18). 6933(See ISIS, Iran, Israel and the End of Days, Item

Government TellsFamilies, ‘Two IsEnough’As Egypt’s population headstowards 100 million, the govern-ment is trying to change theminds of people. “Two IsEnough” is the government’sfirst family-planning campaignaiming to challenge traditions oflarge families in rural Egypt.

Egypt’s population is growingby 2.6 million a year, a high

rate for a country where water and jobsare scarce and schools and hospitalsovercrowded. President Abdel Fattahal-Sisi says the two biggest threats toEgypt are terrorism and populationgrowth.

“We are faced with scarcity in waterresources ... scarcity in jobs, job creation, and we need to really control this popu-lation growth so that people can feel the

benefits of development,” Minister of Social SolidarityGhada Wali told Reuters.

“Two Is Enough” is mainly financed by Egyptian money, with the Social Solidarity Ministry spending 75 millionEgyptian pounds ($4.27 million) and the U.N. providing10 million pounds, according to the ministry.

The two-year campaign targets more than 1.1 millionpoor families with up to three children. The Social SolidarityMinistry, with local NGOs, has trained volunteers to makehome visits and encourage people to have fewer children.

Deeply rooted traditions and lack of education explainwhy many Egyptians have big families. Al-Azhar, Egypt’stop Sunni Muslim authority, endorses family planning, butnot all Egyptians agree.

Some view children as a future source of support.Others who only have girls keep having more until theyget a boy who can carry on the family name.

Commentary: Egypt was the first Arabcountry to sign a peace agreement withIsrael. Although this agreement seemsto be more theoretical than real, it doessave Israel’s military resources signif-icantly; funds can be prioritized moreto the enemies in the north and east. How successful Egypt’s program

“Two Is Enough” will be is a matterof time. Communist China, for example, which implemented a one-child policy, now has authorized two. Some 3,700 years ago, Israel’s pop-

ulation exploded in the land of Egypt.“And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multi-plied, and waxed exceeding mighty;and the land was filled with them”(Exodus 1:7). Pharaoh, the ruler ofEgypt, resorted to cold-blooded murder.“And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shallcast into the river, and every daughterye shall save alive” (verse 22). During

those days, the end result was thedestruction of Egypt and the liberationof the children of Israel. What’s new today is that the pres-

ident of Egypt encourages Jews tocome to his land, and he promisesto build them a synagogue. For Jewsto return to the land of Egypt, how-ever, is most unlikely. Repeatedly, the Lord God of Israel warned theJews not to do that. Obviously, somewill. Regarding the future, theprophet Isaiah has this to say: “Inthat day shall there be a highwayout of Egypt to Assyria, and theAssyrian shall come into Egypt, andthe Egyptian into Assyria, and theEgyptians shall serve with the Assyr-ians. In that day shall Israel be thethird with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of theland” (Isaiah 19:23-24). 6953(See Israel’s Threefold Exodus, Item #1088,

It is heartbreaking when one readsthe prophet Jeremiah. Israel—aswell as Judah—deliberately, pur-

posefully, intentionally, and con-sciously continued to violate God’sgiven law. That was a success for thegreat deceiver, the god of this world.Under any and all circumstances, hewanted to avoid fulfillment of theprophetic Word. If Israel and Judahwere to be 100% rejected—totally an-nihilated—then Bible prophecy couldnot be fulfilled. For example, Jere-miah 31:35-36: “Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light byday, and the ordinances of the moonand of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when thewaves thereof roar; The Lord of hostsis his name: If those ordinances departfrom before me, saith the Lord, thenthe seed of Israel also shall cease frombeing a nation before me for ever.”

Some six centuries later, the words ofJesus would not have been fulfilled,“Salvation is of the Jews.”

We are often too short-sightedwhen analyzing Israel. Decisive is notwhat is happening in our days, norwhat happened many centuries ago.Decisive is what will happen in the fu-ture. There, Scripture makes it crystalclear; nothing is impossible with God.

In the meantime, we see Israel rac-ing ahead of many nations, some ofwhich are Muslim. Azerbaijan, for ex-ample, a country of 10 million—and97% Muslim—has established a goodrelationship with the nation of Israel. Why? Wikipedia states:

Many Azerbaijanis express the hope

that friendship with Israel may help to

resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute

and expedite Azerbaijan’s integration

with the West. The Azerbaijan-Israel

Rawda’s kingdom is deepin the bowels of EbenezerHome. From two rooms

in the basement, she transformspiles of dirty laundry into stacksof fresh-smelling, ironed clothes, which she delivers in person tothe residents.

When I met Rawda in my of-fice at 8:00 am, she had alreadyloaded and set her industrial-sized washing machines in mo-tion. As Ebenezer’s longeststanding worker, I was curiousto know more about her.

Rawda comes from an ArabCatholic background, and cameto a personal faith while workingat Ebenezer Home. She remem-bers the exact date she startedwork at Ebenezer, the 8th of Jan-

The housemother at the timesaw the potential Rawda had,and encouraged her that she hada future at Ebenezer. Rawda tookon more responsibility in thekitchen, and eventually becamethe cook for more than 11 years.

During her time in thekitchen, she worked with May, ayoung lady from an Arab Ameri-can background. May tookRawda along to meetings at the

Arab brethren church in Haifa. It was there that she came to aliving relationship with Jesus, her Messiah.

“It is only by God’s strengththat I get through the days,”Rawda says, with tears glisten-ing in her eyes. “I don’t knowhow I would have managedwithout Him.” This is a phrasethat she repeats often in the halfhour we are together, and as I listen to more of Rawda’s story,I understand why.

Rawda’s only son, Rami, diedat the age of 22. At the age offive, he started having epilepticfits, and a neurologist discov-ered a brain tumor. It was con-sidered to be benign, and lodgedin a part of the brain that madeoperating very risky. Finally, atnine years old, Rami underwentan operation, and the tumor waspartially removed. He continuedto have frequent fits, and at-tended a school for specialneeds. His symptoms got worse;the tumor had transformed frombenign to malignant. The sameneurosurgeon performed the

second operation; however,Rami died five months later.

Rawda’s grief is raw. A fewyears back her husband died, leaving her a widow with threegrown daughters. “It is only byGod’s strength I keep going,”she repeats. The strength andjoy that Rawda draws from herfaith, radiates in her friendlysmile and her concern for oth-ers. Rawda enjoys the quiet rou-tine of the laundry room and thefellowship with other workersduring break times. “It is goodto have work,” she said. “Re-cently, the local authoritiesraised the property tax, whichhas made it very difficult for meto manage. It is impossible with-out God’s help.”

After the interview, I reflectedthat being God’s child certainlydoesn’t give us immunity fromall the troubles of this life; sick-ness, bereavement and financialdifficulties. But, for believers,we have taken refuge under thewings of our Heavenly Fatherand experience His daily, lovingcare.
