    MODERN GREEK 1

The recorded portion of the reading materials for Modern Greek 1 will be found at the end of the program. There are seventeen Reading Lessons, and you can do them as is most convenient for you --- individually, after every other unit or so, or all together, after the full thirty units. Instructions on how to proceed with the readings are contained in the audio portion of the course.

Greek is written using an alphabet that is based on, and quite similar to, the ancient Greek alphabet. However, some differences do exist, so even if you have some familiarity with ancient Greek letters, you should not assume that their modern counter-parts will have the same name, pronunciation, or appearance. Like the Roman alphabet used to represent the English language, the Greek alphabet is a phonetic system, in which the letters represent specific sounds. Some Greek letters resemble letters in the Roman alphabet, but have quite different sounds. For example, the Greek letter H resembles the English capital h, but in Greek this letter is pronounced with an ee sound. Therefore, we recommend that you take the Reading Lessons at your own pace, repeating each until you feel comfortable proceeding to the next.

    MODERN GREEK 1

    Introduction (continued)

With a little effort, you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you are reading Greek.

The Greek alphabet has twenty-four letters which are listed in order on the following pages, along with a guide to the sound or sounds represented by each. Certain combinations of letters have their own sounds; some of them are shown in a separate chart following the alphabet. As in English, some letters or letter combinations can have more than one sound, depending on the amount of stress with which they are pronounced and / or their position in the word.
