Modern Art

Modern Art is a term that refers to artworks produced from the late 1800s through to the 1970s.

Traditions from the past have been rejected in favour of experimentation and fresh ideas.

This work is often abstract or surreal. Abstract - emphasizing lines, colours or general

shapes. Surreal - strange, not real, resembling a dream.

Different types of Modern Art Surrealist - Dream like, surprising,

imaginative, not “real.” Cubist - Objects are broken up and put

back together in an abstract or random way. Use of shapes.

Impressionist - Visual brush strokes, use of light, ordinary subjects.

Expressionist - Distort or change reality to show emotions. Anger.

Pop Art - Use of popular cultural items. Comic books and advertising.
