    Cotton crochet thread Art. 42P by Elmore-Pisgah, Inc or size 10 crochet cotton thread:

    200 yds. American Beauty #76 (red)

    100 yds. Ecru #4 50 yds. Baby Pink #47

    (lt. pink) 50 yds. Rose #46 50 yds. Lt. Green #55 55 yds. Holiday Green #65

    (dk. green) 2 cream 5" doves #1300-25

    2 pieces each of 27" long flat 6 mm strung beads

    45 Lt. Green seed beads

    GAUGE: We are not responsible for lack

    of materials due to project not being worked to gauge. Gauge for this pattern: Hold two strands of thread together as one, 6 cross sts = 2"; 4 cross st rows and 3 sc rows = 2".

    BASIC STITCHES: Ch, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr.

    SPECIAL STITCH: For cross st (cr st), skip next st, dc in next st, dc in st just skipped.

    NOTE: Hold two strands of crochet cotton thread together as one throughout unless otherwise stated.

    BOOKEND COVER (make 2) Front Row 1: With red, ch 33, sc in sec

    ond ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (32 sc made)

    Row 2: Ch 3, 15 cross sts (see Special Stitch), dc in last st, turn.

    Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

    Rows 4-19: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately.

    Row 20: Ch 1, sc in first st, skip next 2 sts, 4 dc in next st, 12 cross sts, 4 dc in next st, skip

  • next 2 sts, sc in last st. Fasten off (top section made).

    Row 21: Working on opposite side of starting ch on row 1, join red with sc in first ch, sc in each ch across, turn.

    Rows 22-27: Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately.

    Row 28: Ch 1, sc in first st, skip next 2 sts, 4 dc in next st, 12 cross sts, 4 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts, sc in last st. Fasten off (bottom section made).

    Back Rows 1-20: Repeat rows 1-20 of

    Front on page 35. Rnd 21: Working around outer

    edge, matching ends of rows and sts on Back to top sections of Front; working through both thicknesses, join red with sc in end of first row, (2 sc in end of next dc row, sc in end of next sc row) 9 times, sc in each st across row 20; working in ends of rows, sc in end of next row, (2 sc in end of next dc row, sc in end of next sc row) 9 times; working around bottom section, working sc in each sc row and 2 sc in each dc row around and sc in each st across row 28, join with sl st in first sc.

    Rnd 22: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 4, (sc in next st, ch 4) around, join. Fasten off.

    Rnd 23: Join ecru with sc in any ch-4 sp, ch 4, (sc in next ch sp,

    4, (sc in next ch sp, ch 4) around, join. Fasten off.

    DOGWOOD (make 10) First Petal Rnd 1: With lt. pink, ch 5, sl st in

    first ch to form ring, ch 3, 4 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch-3. (5 dc made)

    Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st, turn.

    Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, ch 1, sc in last st, do not turn. Fasten off.

    Next Petal Row 1: Join lt. pink with sl st in

    same ring as First Petal, ch 3, 4 dc in ring, turn. (5 dc made)

    Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st, turn.

    Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, ch 1, sc in last st, do not turn. Fasten off.

    Repeat Next Petal two more times for a total of four Petals.

    Petal Trim Working around outer edge of

    Petals, join rose with sc in end of rnd 1 of First Petal, sc in end of each row around each Petal and in each st across each Petal, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

    Arrange and glue 9 beads (or less depending on the size of beads used) to center of each Dogwood flower.

    LEAVES (make 20) Row 1: With lt. green, ch 3, 3 dc

    Row 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in last st, turn.

    Optional: Using dk. green, embroider straight stitches (see illustration) on Leaves forming a stem look.

    Evenly spacing, sew two Leaves to back of each Dogwood (see photo).

    BUD (make 2) With rose, ch 4, yo 2 times, insert

    hook in fourth ch from hook, yo, pull through, (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook, *yo 2 times, insert hook in same ch, yo, pull through, (yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) 2 times; repeat from *, yo, pull through all lps on hook. Fasten off.

    For leaves, with lt. green, ch 3, dc in third ch from hook (leaf made), ch 6, sl st in same ch as dc, ch 3, dc in third ch from hook (leaf made). Fasten off.

    Sew leaves to Bud (see photo).

    STEM (make 2) With Christmas green, ch 100.

    Fasten off.

    FINISHING 1: Cut one piece of cardboard to

    same size as top portion of each metal bookend.

    2: Place one crochet Bookend Cover over each metal bookend inserting cardboard between metal and crochet piece at back.

    3: Glue strung beads to fit over rnd 21 on Front side of each Bookend Cover (see photo).

    4: Arrange and glue five Dogwood flowers, one Bud, one Stem and one Dove to bottom and top sections on Front side of each Bookend Cover (see photo).
