RICH IN ISLAND HISTORY

Built in 1938 for the YMCA, Hale O Aloha was a beautiful ten acre retreat that housed thousands of Hawai‘i’s children during their Volcano camp explorations. Harold Lucas, Secretary of the local branch of the YMCA in the 1930s, came up with the idea for The Fireplace of Friendship. Harold had many friends associated with the YMCA, Rotary International, and the Lions Clubs. During camp construction, Harold sent letters all over the world, asking for rocks or coins to embed in the fireplace. He received responses from across the U.S. and from dozens of countries and territories including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Scotland, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Malaya, India, Canada, Turkey, Thailand, the Philippines, Norway, and the Holy Land.

He received over 500 coins from over 50 countries, rocks of granite from Yosemite, rhyolite from Yellowstone, and novaculite from Hot Springs, Arkansas. Embedded in the fireplace are Hawaiian poi pounders, dinosaur vertebrae, the Hawaiian salt stone, the huge section of a petrified wood log, stones picked up in front of George Washington’s tomb at Mount Vernon, small stones from the Dead Sea, and the Mount of Olives. Some stones, such as the round stone from the ruins of the Acropolis in Athens, and a cave formation from Carlsbad caverns.

Seventy-five years later, Kilauea Lodge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

LOVINGLY CARED FOR

Purchased by Lorna and Albert Jeyte while on their honeymoon in 1986, The Lodge buildings were refurbished and converted into a popular country inn and restaurant to serve the community, and welcome visitors from all over the world.

Architecturally significant for its representation of late 19th - 20th century designs in the Craftsman Style, the guest rooms reflect upcountry charm with a commitment to warmth and peacefulness.

HAWAI‘I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Offering miles of scenic overlooks and trails, stunning vistas and both hot and cold lava, make touring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park an experience to remember. Within the park and surrounding areas are native Hawaiian species and endangered birds such as the Nene, ‘I‘iwi and ‘Amakihi. Popular day hikes include the Kīlauea Iki Trail, Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs, and Nāhuku - Thurston Lava Tube.

VOLCANO GOLF COURSE

Play golf on Pele‘s Course, one of the world’s most unusual courses, located in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Situated on the rim of the Kilauea volcanic crater, Volcano Golf Course lies in the cool highlands 4,000 feet above the sea, with sweeping vistas of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea (both snowcapped in winter). The course is 18 holes, par 72, and a total of 6,547 yards of playing area.

LUSH RAINFOREST

Surrounded by native ‘Ōhi‘a and Hāpu‘u forest (both endemic to Hawai‘i) and protected, rare native birds, the Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant remains a landmark in the small artist community of Volcano Village on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The mountain air and fern-shaded ecosystem create a cozy serene mountain ambiance, worlds apart from the quintessential Hawaiian vacation of white sandy beaches and palm trees yet close enough for a day tour.

FUTURE VISION FOR EXPANSION ON THE FIVE ACRE LODGE SITE

Looking to the future, the owner’s vision is to build 6 fourplexes for a total of 24 units, of approximately 1,200 square feet each. The design and aesthetics would be in keeping with the current architecture. These units could then be sold to individual owners. Part time owners could then engage the new Kilauea Lodge owners to manage and produce rental income by using the units as an extension to rooms in The Lodge.

FUTURE VISION FOR EXPANSION ON THE BACK FIVE ACRES

The zoning for the five acres is RS-20 meaning future subdivision may bepossible. If subdivision were successful, the addition of ten to fifteen cottagesmay be possible. These again could be sold to private owners who may thenplace their homes in a management relationship with the new owners of thelodge. This is another potential scenario for expanding occupancy rates inThe Lodge.
