Thank you Mr. Johal for all the support you have provided our students and staff. You will be missed. Mr. D. Drmanic will be joining us in September as acting Vice Principal. This school year has gone by so quickly and I have certainly enjoyed my first year, working with the students, staff and parents of Mississauga Secondary School. The spirit of the LIONS is second to none. The positive energy at this school is a credit to the enthusiasm of our staff and students, and a tribute to the support of parents. The accomplishments have been many and varied this year, certainly too many to outline in this newsletter but many of which are captured in "Fantasy 2015—2016", the school’s yearbook. My sincere thanks to Ms. Ohri and the yearbook crew who have worked a tremendous number of hours to capture the spirit of the Lions. This newsletter outlines a few announcements for year end and some key dates for the next school year, including our school council meeting dates. We encourage all parents to attend, so please mark your calendars. Next year, we will be welcoming students from GTA-Prep basketball academy to MSS. We look forward to working alongside external coaches who are committed to helping high-performing student athletes achieve excellence ‘on the court ’ while we support their academic success. Also next year, we will be gaining a new program, Section 23 - TRE-ADD and we look forward to working alongside our community partner, Surrey Place Centre. Some additional exciting news is that MSS will be offering parents the convenience of paying online for all school related fees, including registration fees. Please see our enclosed memo on how to register online today (on the reverse side of our student registration information letter)! Accompanying this newsletter, is your son/daughter’s final report card. I trust that they have had a successful year. Please review your son/ daughter's progress and future educational plans with them. To those students returning in September, I hope you have an enjoyable summer and that you return to school ready to do your absolute best. To those not returning, I wish you much success in your future endeavours. Have a restful and safe summer! June 2016

New Peel District School Board program offers flexible school options for student athletes and artists

Does your child/teen have an intense sports or arts training and competition schedule that makes it difficult to attend school regularly? The Peel District School Board's new Peel Region High Performers Program will offer flexible timetabling to accommodate student athletes and artists with demanding practice, competition, rehearsal and/or performance schedules.

Peel Region High Performers Program will open in September 2017, and will be offered at Britannia Public School (grades 4 to 5), Dolphin Sr. Public School (grades 6 to 8) and Mississauga Secondary School (grades 9 to 12). Students will have the opportunity to participate in school activities and will be supported as they work towards meeting the expectations of the Ontario curriculum. Students' learning programs will be determined based on each individual's training schedule and education needs.

To qualify for the program, high-performing students must be recommended by a coach, agent or instructor who can verify the students' levels of competitiveness, training hours and schedules.

Information about the registration process and the number of spots available in the Peel Region High Performers Program will be posted on www.peelschools.org/HighPerformers as the information becomes available this fall.

Applications, including a $40 application fee, will be accepted beginning fall 2016—intake into the program will be ongoing and students can apply at any point during the year. Additional details will be sent to families in October/November. There is no cost to attend the program.

Questions? See the Peel District School Board’s website FAQ for answers to frequently asked questions or contact the Peel board's curriculum and instruction support services department at 905-890-1010 ext. 2854.

INFORMATION FOR PDSB PARENTS REGARDING SCHOOL

START UP TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES FOR SEPTEMBER 2016 If your home address will be changing during the summer, please notify the office staff at your child’s school prior to June 30. Late requests will not be reflected in the planned bus routes to commence in September and may result in transportation services not being available for your child during the first weeks of school. Parents will be responsible for their children getting to and from school until appropriate transportation service is arranged.

The distance criteria for transportation eligibility is: 3.8 kilometers for Grades 9 – 12

If your child is moving to grade 9 in the 2016-2017 school year, their eligibility status for transportation may be changing. Eligibility information can be accessed at the website noted below.

Parents who received letters in April and May of this year indicating that the transportation eligibility status for their children is being revised due to eligibility reassessment are reminded that this change will occur effective September 6, 2016.

All transportation operations issues are the responsibility of STOPR and not either Board or individual Trustees.
