TAU PSI CHAPTER
ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.
MISS BLACK & GOLD SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT
ALPHA PHI ALPHA HISTORY
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. the first intercollegiate Greek-
lettered fraternity established for Black college students, was or-
ganized at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in 1906. The
seven visionary founders at Cornell, known as the “Jewels” are:
Dr. Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle
Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert
Harold Ogle and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The fraternity initially
served as a study and support group for minority students who
faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cor-
nell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity suc-
ceeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha‟s princi-
ples of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of
humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other col-
leges and universities, many of them historically black institutions,
soon after the founding at Cornell. The first Alumni Chapter was
established in 1911. The fraternity integrated it‟s racial member-
ship in 1945. Since the fraternity‟s inception, it has expanded to
approximately 700 chapters scattered throughout the U.S., Carib-
bean Islands, Africa, Asia, Europe and the West Indies. Its mem-
bership is world-wide. To date, the fraternity has initiated over
200,000 members.
While continuing to stress academic excellence among its mem-
bers, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educa-
tional, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-
American. The purposes of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are:
To stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the
greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity
of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of
manhood, and to aid down trodden humanity in its efforts to
achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.
Our Mission Statement:
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. develops leaders, promotes broth-
erhood and academic excellence, while providing service and ad-
vocacy for our communities.
Our Motto:
First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All
Our Aims:
Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind
The founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. were no ordinary achiev-
ers. Given racial attitudes in 1906, their accomplishments were monumen-
tal. As founder Henry Arthur Callis euphemistically stated—because the
half-dozen African American students at Cornell University during the
school year 1904-05 did not return to campus the following year, the incom-
ing students in 1905-06, in founding Alpha Phi Alpha, were determined to
bind themselves together to ensure that each would survive in the racially
hostile environment. In coming together with this simple act, they preceded
by decades the emergence of such on-campus programs as affirmative ac-
tion, upward bound and remedial assistance. The students set outstanding
examples of scholarship, leadership and success—preceding the efforts
even of the NAACP and similar civil rights organizations.
Henry Arthur Callis became a practicing physician, Howard University Pro-
fessor of Medicine and prolific contributor to medical journals. Often regarded
as the “philosopher of the founders,” and a moving force in the Fraternity‟s de-
velopment, he was the only one of the “Cornell Seven” to become General
President. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., he was a medical consultant to
the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon his death in 1974, at age 87,
the Fraternity entered a time without any living Jewels. His papers were donated
to Howard‟s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.
Charles Henry Chapman entered higher education and eventually became
Professor of Agriculture at what is now Florida A&M University. A university
funeral was held with considerable Fraternity participation when he became the
first Jewel to enter Omega Chapter in 1934. Described as “a Brother beloved in
the bonds,” Chapman was a founder of FAMU‟s Beta Nu Chapter. During the
organization stages of Alpha Chapter, he was the first chairman of the Commit-
tees on Initiation and Organization.
Eugene Kinckle Jones became the first Executive Secretary of the National
Urban League. His 20-year tenure with the Urban League thus far has exceeded
those of all his successors in office. A versatile leader, he organized the first
three Fraternity chapters that branched out from Cornell—Beta at Howard,
Gamma at Virginia Union and the original Delta at the University of Toronto in
Canada. In addition to becoming Alpha Chapter‟s second President and joining
with Callis in creating the Fraternity name, Jones was a member of the first
Committees on Constitution and Organization and helped write the Fraternity
ritual. Jones also has the distinction of being one of the first initiates as well as
an original founder. His status as a founder was not finally established until
1952. He died in 1954.
George Biddle Kelley became the first African American engineer registered in
the state of New York. Not only was he the strongest proponent of the Fraternity
idea among the organization‟s founders, the civil engineering student also be-
came Alpha Chapter‟s first President. In addition, he served on committees that
worked out the handshake and ritual. Kelley was popular with the Brotherhood.
He resided in Troy, New York and was active with Beta Pi Lambda Chapter in
Albany. He died in 1963.
Nathaniel Allison Murray pursued graduate work after completing his under-
graduate studies at Howard. He later returned home to Washington, D.C., where
he taught in public schools. Much of his career was spent at Armstrong Voca-
tional High School in the District of Columbia. He was a member of Alpha
Chapter‟s first committee on organization of the new fraternal group, as well as
the Committee on the Grip. The charter member of Washington‟s Mu Lambda
Chapter was a frequent attendee of General Conventions. He died in 1959.
Robert Harold Ogle entered the career secretarial field and had the unique
privilege of serving as a professional staff member to the United States Senate
Committee on Appropriations. He was an African American pioneer in his
Capitol Hill position. He proposed the Fraternity‟s colors and was Alpha Chap-
ter‟s first secretary. Ogle joined Kelley in working out the first ritual and later
became a charter member of Washington‟s Mu Lambda Chapter. He died in
1936.
Vertner Woodson Tandy became the state of New York‟s first registered ar-
chitect, with offices on Broadway in New York City. The designer of the Frater-
nity pin holds the distinction of being the first African American to pass the
military commissioning examination and was commissioned First Lieutenant in
the 15th Infantry of the New York State National Guard. He was Alpha Chap-
ter‟s first treasurer and took the initiative to incorporate the Fraternity. Among
the buildings designed by the highly talented architect is Saint Phillips Episco-
pal Church in New York City. He died in 1949, at age 64.
The Brothers of the Tau Psi Chapter of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorpo-
rated would like to welcome you to our
2nd Annual Miss Black & Gold Pag-
eant. The theme this year is, “Reign of
the Greek Goddess,” and we are ex-
tremely thankful to all of those that
have put in hard work to make this pag-
eant a success.
This has been a very successful year so
far for the chapter as we have stepped
up or involvement in service projects
and have implemented new initiatives
that align closely to our fraternity‟s stra-
tegic plan.
The brothers and I are thankful for the support that you continuously
provide, whether it be at a social function or a service project. Your
support motivates this brotherhood and allows us to fully devote much
effort into servicing our 14 county service areas: Weakley, Lake,
Obion, Dyer, Lauderdale, Tipton, Crockett, Gibson, Carroll, Henry,
Madison, Haywood, Fayette, and Hardeman. Our personal motto this
year has been to “STEP UP OUR „A‟ GAME” and I truly believe that
we are putting that motto into action; making it a priority to be of ser-
vice to ourselves, our university, and our surrounding communities.
Once again, we thank you for your support and hope that you enjoy this
event.

“My Queen” By: Brother Anthony Prewitt
I‟ve yearned for you with ages times
Patiently awaiting your arrival
I knew that the success of my kingdom
Rested with your survival
I saw your outer shell for years
But I couldn‟t interpret that part
Didn‟t recognize the queen you were
Until you read to me your heart
And like a Phoenix you rose from out the ashes
And blinded me with your soul
A spirit so bright, I craved the light
You made my future whole
And when you speak
I‟m speechless
When you smile
I‟m frozen
Because your beauty has no name
It‟s bred from a genuine heart of gold
I bask in your presence eagerly awaiting
Insight from your past...untold
And the wonders that lie behind your eyes
Intrigue me enough to stay
The experience of loving a pure soul
Won‟t let me turn away
My life, my every being
I offer in trade for your mind
Because I know if I could spend only seconds with you
A true Queen, I would definitely find
I humbly ask will you walk with me
Let me sit for hours, hearing your voice
Oh sweet music to my ears…
Give you my heart...I have no choice
So just sit on your thrown with an air of elegance
With pose in your black, fitted gown
And watch as an Alpha...makes his way
To place upon your head...a crown
As the brothers clasp hands and circle about
We realize our dream has come true
Because we know in our heart, this vision is clear
There will never be another Queen like you!
The
Goddess Of
Harmony
The Brothers of Tau Psi would like
to give a special tribute in simply
recognizing our 1st Miss Black &
Gold:
Miss Leslea Robertson
THE MISS BLACK & GOLD PAGEANT
The first national Miss Black & Gold Pageant was held during Alpha‟s 1976 Gen-
eral Convention in New York City. Miss Denise Smith, representing Georgia State
University, Atlanta, Georgia was awarded the first prize. The pageant was de-
ferred following the first event and reinstated during the Fraternity‟s 1982 General
Convention in Los Angeles, California.
The Tau Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha held it‟s very first Miss Black & Gold
Scholarship Pageant on November 13, 2009 in the University Center Ballroom.
Six young women participated, but only one stood out to become the first of
many...Miss Leslea Robert- son. The Miss Black and
Gold Scholarship Pageant is an event whose primary
purpose is to highlight and foster the inextricable con-
nection between success and etiquette amongst young
women. This pageant spot- lights the young women‟s
poise, self-confidence, communication skills, intelli-
gence, and beauty. In all, the Miss Black and Gold
Pageant encompasses true womanhood, success, and
confidence. Academic ex- cellence and scholarship are
greatly stressed in the com- petition with the Fraternity
providing the contestants with scholarships to assist
with the financial obliga- tions associated with post
secondary studies.
The pageant aims to portray African-American women in a strong, positive and
beautiful light. The pageant is not just a beauty contest, it is also is a scholarship
competition, and the top three winners earn an academic scholarship toward their
next semester. The winner of the Miss Black and Gold pageant will compete for
Miss Black and Gold of the Area, Western Region, and ultimately, the Nation.
The Miss Black and Gold Pageant is our way of showcasing the intelligence, tal-
ent, excellence, and unparalleled beauty of Black Women on the campus of the
University of Tennessee at Martin. We give our sincerest and most heartfelt thanks
to each of the young ladies who have participated. Each of you are truly a queen.
We thank you for representing yourselves, your families, your people, and last but
not least the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc in a very ladylike and re-
spectable manner.......Without further adue........
WHAT IS A GODDESS? by Genie Webster
A goddess invents her own life, and lives according to her own vision. This quality requires the
companion qualities of imagination and courage.
A goddess is autonomous. She seeks no one's approval, but listens to her own counsel. She an-
swers to no one. She does not try to impress anyone. Her work speaks for itself. She never
makes excuses and rarely offers explanations for her actions. She is not defensive for she is not
threatened by what other people may think of her. She is the queen of her own life and this is
reflected in her demeanor.
A goddess is passionate (not to be confused with manic). She has a palpable energy and enthu-
siasm that is contagious and beneficial to those around her. In esoteric terms, she raises the vi-
bration in a group situation. She inspires others.
A goddess is continually learning and evolving.
A goddess is authentic. The mask she presents to the outside world is the same as her innermost
heart. She has learned to express her emotions cleanly and healthily. What you see is what you
get. A goddess knows her own truth. She does not impose her truth on others, but will share her
wisdom when invited to.
A goddess takes care of herself. She does not expect others to take care of her. She treats herself
as well as she would treat her best friend. She is compassionate and forgiving with herself and
others. She gets enough rest and gives her body the right fuel -- both in oxygen and in food and
water. She knows what she needs. She feeds her soul.
A goddess is committed to healing the earth and works towards peace and understanding --
whether it is on a large scale or simply within her family and closest circle of friends. She con-
tributes to cleaning up the environment and teaches the next generation to do likewise.
A goddess sees her body (and the earth) as sacred, and is in tune with natural cycles. She is
comfortable with her sexuality.
A goddess has learned balance and patience. Flow and ebb. Waxing and waning. A goddess
does not freak out during ebb or waning times. She uses it wisely for rest, reflection, and plan-
ning.
A goddess has learned to trust her intuition and inner knowing. She has learned to tap into this
source at will.
A goddess has learned to let go of the need to control the flow of the river. She has discovered
the futility of trying too hard. She has learned to ride the wave and go with the flow, to ask for
and accept help when required. She is flexible, fluid, and adaptable. She has given up the need
to control or manipulate. She does not pout or whine when she does not get her way.
A goddess communicates her boundaries. She is gentle but firm when her boundaries are vio-
lated. She respects others' boundaries. She asks for clarification when necessary.
A goddess recognizes and honors other goddesses and gods. She lends her support to the work
of other god/desses. She does not feel competitive or threatened by other goddesses and under-
stands that what is good for one is good for all, and that when one shines, the light benefits all.
A goddess knows how to share and is generous of spirit, but she knows her limitations and does
not give more than what she can afford -- emotionally, financially, physically, or energy-wise.
A goddess's natural state is one of joy and gratitude. She is also at home with her shadow, and
will honestly mourn her losses and explore her fears. She understands that everyone experi-
ences pain -- it is part of life on earth. Therefore she works through her own pain with courage
and dignity, not trying to sidestep it, or numb it, but to get through it and learn from it.
A goddess is comfortable with death, and has learned to let go.... of relationships, concepts, and
material possessions that are worn out, or that no longer serve her growth.
" A woman who is in the process of learning to know, accept and love
herself on all levels, Mind Body and Spirit. A woman who, be-cause she focuses on personal growth and self awareness, experiences a
life, increasingly filled with peace, love, joy, passion and fun. A woman that understands that she has unlimited capacity to make her life anything she wants. A woman who is inspired to give to those
around her our of her sense of gratitude and abundance."

A Goddess for Me Marcus Blake
I love everything about you Yet, saying all that
I can never picture myself Telling you how much
"I love you" Your soft presence gives the air life
You lift up the seldom that brings me down So having you around me
Couldn't make me anymore happy Your a rose that shines more than the moon
Like a soft warm breeze in the month of June You make everything seem perfect While i gaze at your diamond eyes My reflection is erased, and hidden
Lost in your void of complexity Your a goddess in disguise, I see A divine present from the gods for me
What better than to have something so divine To love and cherish throughout all of time

Sickness is easier to take when

Laughter is often found when the
day is sunny and bright
Yet everyone needs it most once
day has turned to night
The levels in our lives will never
equal out
But isn’t that exactly what life is
all about
So why is it so hard evolving with

Or finding new perceptions to

I want to find uniqueness on every

Dominique Wilson
The Queen A Queen is proud of herself. She respects herself and others. She is aware of who she is. She neither seeks definition from
the person she is with, or does she expect them to read her mind. She is quite capable of
articulating her needs.
A Queen is hopeful. She is strong enough to make all her dreams come true..... She knows love, therefore she
gives love. She recognizes that her love has great value and must be reciprocated.
If her love is taken for granted, it soon disappears.
A Queen has a dash of inspiration, a dabble of endurance.
She knows that she will, at times, have to inspire others to reach the potential God gave them. A Queen knows
her past, understands her present and
moves toward the future.
A Queen knows the Creative Energy. She knows that with
this the world is her playground, but without she will just be played. A Queen does not live in fear of the future
because of her past. Instead, she understands that her life experiences are merely lessons, meant
to bring her closer to self knowledge
and unconditional self love. Queen,
