Mindfulness
About MindfulnessMindfulness is a practice of paying attention, of being deeply connected to yourself, to others and to the world around you. It is a state of being mind–focussed and aware. Although rooted in the ancient art of meditation, mindfulness is secular and can be drawn on by anyone no matter what their religious or cultural background.
Mindfulness for Stress Reduction (MBSR) was devised by Jon Kabat Zinn at the University of Massachusetts over 30 years ago. Since then Mindfulness meditation skills have been taught in many settings including hospitals, schools, prisons, universities and corporate environments.
How is it helpful?Mindfulness meditation is becoming increasingly popular in the United Kingdom as research is finding that it can help: • reduce depression, anxiety and stress• manage chronic pain, long term illness, blood
pressure and migraines.
In 2004, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended Mindfulness as a significantly effective treatment for recurrent depression.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction CoursesThe University Counselling Centre runs MBSR courses designed to help you learn new ways of handling difficult physical sensations, feelings and moods. The key skill that you will learn is ‘Mindfulness,’ a means of giving your attention consciously and without judgement to what is happening in the present moment in your body, your mind and the external world.
Mindfulness can open you up to a new way of seeing things, of sensing the world. It can increase your sense of personal confidence, support you to identify a wider range of possible choices and connect you to your own strength to face the different challenges in your life. Most people who complete the MSBR course report that they gain lasting benefits such as:
• More energy and enthusiasm• A greater capacity for relaxation• Expanded awareness and vitality• An increased ability to handle stressful
situations
Ongoing Drop-In Mindfullness: This weekly drop-in will provide a space to practice and develop an appreciation of mindfulness, and explore ways to apply this to emerging life challenges.
