Spring is full of transformations as Mother Nature wields her power to revitalize the once dormant. There is a sleepy opportunity on our shore that has been waiting a long time for its chance for renewal - the old rail trail connecting Porters Lake and Musquodoboit Harbour. Together with the help from the community, we can wake it up from its long slumber and transform it into a useful and vital community asset. This 15 kilometre stretch of undeveloped trail represents a critical gap in the areas Active Transportation Plan and S.A.T.A. has begun the process of closing the gap with a feasibility study. We will soon learn how to best develop the first section of trail which crosses the Chezzetcook marsh. Following this, a construction plan can be generated. The long term goal is to develop the entire trail into a signed, safe, non-motorized transportation route, which would be an important accomplishment for our community. Just imagine being able to get to every day amenities and services by using a healthier means of travel, like walking or cycling. This will naturally make using the trail fun and even tourists visiting our area will feel encouraged to check it out, which is good news for local business. View the proposed route here http://shoreat.ca/images/cmtrail.jpg. To reach this goal, S.A.T.A. will require the voice of the community to power its progress because, after all, active transportation is about the betterment of community. We invite you to join the conversation at our AGM where we will re- introduce you to this beautiful trail, discuss some of the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead, and let you know how to get involved.
