Middle Tennessee Lady Raider Softball

K a r e nG r e e n

Karen Green knows how to build a successful softball programfrom scratch. Middle Tennessee is her second triumph after be-coming the schools first head coach in 1993.

Her first collegiate job was in 1992 at Belmont University in

Nashville, TN, where she also started that program. She was 23-

11 that first year, earning Tennessee Col-

legiate Athletic Conference Coach of the

Year honors while leading the Rebelettes

to a TCAC Championship.

At Middle Tennessee, her Lady

Raider squads have enjoyed comparable

success. After an inaugural year finish of

13-19 and fourth place in the conference,

Green’s 1994 team finished 35-21 and

ranked second in the OVC. Last season

proved to be the most successful yet, as Green led her team to a

school record 38 wins and consistantly received votes for the Top

25.

Green enjoyed another milestone accomplishment last sea-

son, leading the Lady Raiders to their first-ever conference cham-

pionship and appearance at the NCAA Regionals.

With a program that is only eight years old, Green has proven

that she can build from the ground up and take it to the next level.

The proof is in her accomplishments, record, and ability to

recruit. Green has successfully recruited players from Georgia,

Alabama, Florida, Arizona, and

California. She is averaging

nearly 30 wins per season and

has only one sub-.500 record

in conference play, coming in

her first season at Middle Ten-

nessee.

Thirty-one of her players have

either been named first or sec-

ond team all-conference dur-

ing her eight seasons at Middle

Tennessee. She has coached

11 that have been named to

the OVC All-Tournament team

with two being named the tour-

nament MVP.

She also had two freshman players of the year in the OVC. For

the first time in OVC history, a player earned OVC Pitcher of the

Year honors in back-to-back seasons when Jennifer Martinez

accomplished the feat last year.

Not only has Green recruited top tier talent, but she has also

done it while maintaining the integrity of the University's academic

pursuits. No other program at Middle Tennessee can boast about

the off-the-field success that Green's softball team has annually

reached in the classroom.

A Lady Raider has been named to the NFCA Academic All-

American team on 13 occassions. Green has had a least one

Academic All-American four straight years. There has also been

one OVC Scholar Athlete of the Year and one OVC Medal of Honor

winner. This list does not even include the impressive number of her

players that have regularly been named to the Conference All-

Academic team and the Middle Tennessee honor roll.

Her success has not come solely from the collegiate level.

Before she began the Belmont program, Green spent four years as

the head softball coach at Davidson Academy in Nashville. In 1989

and 1990, her teams were regional runners-up to the eventual

state champions. She was named District 7-A and Tennessee

Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 1988.

A native of Nashville and a 1985 graduate of Trevecca

Nazarene College, Green received her master’s degree from

Middle Tennessee in 1990.

Green is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Asso-

ciation and works numerous camps during the summer.

Middle Tennessee Lady Raider Softball

2 0 0 1P r e v i e w

There’s no denying the fact that theLady Raider softball team is coming off theirbest year ever. Opponents – especially thosein the Sun Belt – won’t be happy to hear thatthis year’s team is steadfastly shaping up tobe even better.

Last year’s squad, which cruised to anOhio Valley Conference championship and aberth in the NCAA tournament, racked upa record of 39-21, including a 16-5 recordin the OVC. With even more power, new-found speed and a pitching staff as good asany in the country, the Lady Raiders arelooking to crack the 40-win plateau for thefirst time.

“They’re as close as the group was lastyear,” Lady Raider head coach Karen Greensaid. “We strive every year to make a familyatmosphere and the new kids just fall intothat. With our success, I think [the newcom-ers] bought into that [system].”

Despite the high expectations sur-rounding the Lady Raiders first year in the

Sun Belt Conference, the team is young-returning only three seniors. However, withseven juniors on the roster – almost all ofwhom are expected to make the startinglineup – the Lady Raiders are by no meansinexperienced.

“We’re all here to help each other,”Green said, “and none of us can do it byourselves. We have to rely on each other.”

PitchingOne area Green and the entire

team knows it can rely on ispitching.

All three of the Lady Raid-ers most active pitchers from ayear ago– Jennifer Martinez,Stayc Preator and AmandaKendall – are returning. Seem-ingly untouchable, the LadyRaiders' staff allowed oppo-nents to hit only .219 alongwith an impressive 1.60 ERAfor the combined staff.

“It should be our strongpoint again,” Green said, “ifeverybody’s healthy. We’ve gotpretty good numbers on ourside as well as experience.”

Leading the way is Martinez, last year’sOVC Pitcher of the year and OVC tourna-ment MVP. For the first time in conferencehistory a player was named Pitcher of theYear two straight years. The Fairfield,Calif., native was also second team All-Region. A 20-game winner in 2000,Martinez also threw 28 complete gamesand nine shutouts.

Even more impressive is the fact thatMartinez, only a junior, recorded a stagger-ing 229 strikeouts last year. The LadyRaiders opponents came up empty 424times, compared to just 166 strikeouts bythe Lady Raiders.

“Jennifer is a leader by example,”Green said. “She just quietly gets her jobdone and knows what she has to do.”

Preator, who is returning after havingoff-season surgery, is expectedback at full strength for theteam, while Kendall, theonly senior on the pitchingstaff, will see more actionthis season as well. Kendallwas 6-2 last year, goingthe distance in five of theseven games she started.

InfieldWhile the pitching

staff will have a familiarlook, the Lady Raiders in-field will be the bearer ofsome wholesale changes.

“We have a completelydifferent infield,” Green said.“Talent wise though, thereshouldn’t be a drop off and maybe even a

step up. The advantage we have with ourinfield is that they are very versatile. There

are very few setspots, but we an-swered a lot ofour questions(during thefall).”

At the mo-ment, AshlieWay and KellyCormier are in thehunt for the job atfirst base. Whileboth are more thanadequate fielders, the job will undoubt-edly come down towho is swinging the

bat. Lisa Sherman appears to have theadvantage at second. Wendy Pollock andKristina Hieb will battle for time at thirdbase. Steffi Silva playing shortstop is theonly returning infielder.

“Your starters will always be as strongas your bench,” said Green, of the compe-tition for starting spots in the infield. “Ifyour bench pushes your starters then you’regoing to be a better team, even if [those whodon’t start] don’t play.”

OutfieldLike the Lady Raiders pitching staff,

the outfield is deep with experience andtalent. Returning are Laura Brockman, EricaBuhl, Courtney Wallace, Kip Phillips, andJennifer Polsteen, while Green added fresh-men Katie McGraw and Liz Polfus.

“The outfieldwill be a big plus forus this year,” Greensaid. “We’re loadedin the outfield andwe have morespeed, I think, thanwe’ve had in thepast.”

trademark has always been the fact that itprovides a little “pop in the bat.” WithBrockman leading the cast of returningplayers, speed should once again be a dis-tinct characteristic.

Brockman, Phillips, and Wallace allproved to be steady fielders last year.Brockman recorded 60 putouts against justthree errors for a .955 fielding percentage,Phillips made just one error in the field lastseason, while Wallace led the team with fiveoutfield assists.

“Our freshmen are sophomores now,”said Green, speaking of Buhl and Phillips,“so they’ve gotten over the freshmen syn-drome. The outfield is definitely going to beone of our strengths.”

Offense“I think we should be a notch ahead of

where we were last year,” Green said.“We’ve added some walk-ons who will helpus with speed. So we’ll be a little bit moretwo-dimensional.”

Known in the past for its capabilities interms of hitting the long ball, it’s amazing tothink how many more runs the Lady Raiderswill be able to produce with the added threatof base stealing.

“I like more of the power game,”Green said, “but you have to have the shortspeed game too. We’ve added two or threethat should help us get around the bases alittle quicker, but our power should defi-nitely come into play.”

“It’s going to beexciting,” said Green.

The PreseasonIf the pre-

season fall schedulewas any indication of

how Middle Tenn-essee'syear will go, opponents on

the 2001 schedule had bettercome prepared when they step

on the field with the Lady Raiders.During the nine-game schedule, the

Lady Raiders dropped just one game toTennessee Tech by one run.

"We accomplished what we wanted toaccomplish," remarked head coach KarenGreen.

"We answered some of the questionswe had coming into the fall."

One of the questions was not pitchingas the team's leading returner, JenniferMartinez, had a stifling 0.70 earned runaverage. Courtney Wallace and Amanda

Kendall also pitched well as both earnedthree wins.

Leading the way offensively for theLady Raiders were junior college transferLindsay Acevedo, who hit .464 with onehomerun, and Erica Buhl.

Buhl had the largest impact in the line-up hitting .464 with four homeruns and 14RBIs. Sophomore Kip Phillips hit .388 andswiped seven of the team's 16 stolen basesin the nine games.

Steffi Silva, Laura Brockman, KellyCormier,Wallace, and Kristina Hieb all hitover .300 for the fall season.

"We concentrated more on defenseduring the fall," said Green. "So I'm pleasedwith the way we hit the ball."

As a team, the Lady Raiders hit .346with six homeruns and 16 stolen bases. Theteam scored 48 runs in the nine games.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Middle Tennessee’s softball seasoncame to an end with a 3-1 loss to Illinois State in the losers’bracket of the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

Illinois State scored one in the second on two-out, bases-loaded single from Abbie Scott. The Lady Raiders salvagedthe inning with an unassisted grounder to first base.

Courtney Wallace tied it up with a solo home run to leftcenter in the third inning, herfirst of the season and sec-ond of her career.

The Redbirds finishedthe game with single runs inboth the sixth and seventh in-nings, which the Lady Raid-ers were unable to answer.

Middle Tennessee hadrunners in scoring position inthe first, third, and sixth in-nings but struggled to find thehits it needed to followthrough and put runs on theboard.

Melanie Manley, Carisa Chavez and Kip Phillips each finished thegame 1-for-2 from the plate. Manley and Chavez both doubled.

Nicole Kurth picked up the win for the Redbirds, her 17th of theseason. She gave up only four hits and struck out seven.

“I thought we came out sluggish again today,” said assistant coachMark Mattson. “We had trouble putting hits together again, but ourdefense was solid. I also thought Stayc (Preator) did a great job today.

“Overall we had a great year. We’ll take away a lot of memorablemoments, great plays and big wins. Next year will be exciting with a lotof players coming back and some new players coming in. We hope to go

farther next year and won’t be satisfiedwith just making it back to regionals.

We look forward to competingin the Sun Belt.”

The Lady Raiders finish theseason with a 39-21 record. MiddleTennessee leaves the Ohio ValleyConference as its champion with a111-65 league record during itseight-year membership.

The Lady Raider softball team enjoyed its best season inschool history with a conference championship and theprogram's first trip to the NCAA Championships. Althoughthe Lady Raiders didn't advance to the College WorldSeries, it was a remarkable year and one where a champi-onship foundation can be built. Following are recaps fromthe two NCAA Tournament games, including the gameagainst perrenial national power Arizona, who advanced tothe semifinals.

Lady Raiders leave OVCas its softball championsBy Tony Stinnett / Sports writer

What to give five seniors as going away and graduation pre-sents in one?

Something unique for sure, yet something they will cherish. Agift which will hold memories strong enough to last a lifetime andserve as a constant reminder of some of the best years of their life.

How about a championship? They are tough to come by. Youcan’t put a price tag on them but their value can’t be determinedmonetarily.

Perfect. And so it was.Middle Tennessee’s softball team will be sending the 2000 se-

nior class out in style after winning the school’s first OVC Tourna-ment softball championship with a 3-1 win against four-time defend-ing champion Southeast Missouri Friday night at Lady Raiders Field.

The Lady Raiders, who became the fifth Middle Tennessee teamto win an OVC championship this year, earned the automatic berthinto the 48-team NCAA Tournament for the first time. Middle Ten-nessee will learn of its regional destination during a selection showSunday at 8:30 p.m. at Shoeless Joes Sports Cafe. All fans areinvited to attend.

“This is definitely the best gift our team could have given us,”said senior second baseman Carisa Chavez, who was 2-for-3 with awalk, double, RBI and run scored in the championship game. “Weknow we were the most talented team in the league all year. Youhave to be confident. We led the OVC in offense, defense and pitching. It was obvious.”

And Middle Tennessee’s players went out and proved it in con-vincing fashion as they steamrolled through the tournament field.

They took the hard road and used the most obvious team to

make their statement.SEMO (31-24) had won five of the six OVC softball tour-

naments and had been the OVC’s only NCAA representative.Middle Tennessee (39-19) beat the defending champs

twice, putting them in the loser’s bracket with a 3-1 win earlierFriday, then ending the Otahkians reign in the title game.

Lady Raider pitching allowed just two runs in three games.Tournament MVP Jennifer Martinez pitched complete

games in Middle Tennessee’s first two wins, then coach KarenGreen marched freshman Stayc Preator to the mound for thetitle game.

“Jennifer and Stayc both are calm under pressure,” Greensaid. “In summer ball they are used to playing for champion-ships and that’s one reason we recruited them. They have knownfor a week that this was the rotation we were going to stickwith as long as we were in the winner’s bracket.”

They never had to leave it.Preator showed the composure of a veteran as she breezed

through the SEMO lineup, giving up five hits and striking out10, including last year’s tourney MVP, Kelsey White, three times.

“I’m the rookie and I was just trying to do my best know-ing my team was behind me,” Preator said. “I knew we couldn’tlet up because SEMO is a great comeback team. It was relax-ing out there with the defense making some awesome plays.”

Like the one shortstop Steffi Silva made in the third inningon a ball hit into the hole by SEMO’s Cari Cook. Silva doveheadlong to her right, snagged the ball and threw a perfectstrike from her knees to gun down Cook. It was the showcaseplay of a phenomenal defensive tournament from the Lady Raid-ers.

“The defense was outstanding throughout the tourna-ment,” Green said. “Both of our pitchers did a super job and wegot it going at the plate.”

Middle Tennessee collected 19 hits in the two wins againstSEMO Friday, including eight in the championship game.

The Lady Raiders struck first with two in the third as aresult of heads-up running. All-Tournament performer MelanieManley and Chavez were on second and third with one outwhen Laura Brockman, also on the All-Tournament team, lifteda fly ball to right.

Each runner tagged and advanced but when the relay wasbobbled Chavez never stopped running and scored.

Chavez’ two-out single in the fourth plated Manley, whohad doubled with two outs. Manley was 2-for-4 with two runsscored in the title game. Chavez was 2-for-3 with an RBI andrun scored.

Middle Tennessee had similar success in the winner’sbracket finals win against SEMO.

It was all-tournament picks Tamara Davis and Shay Haskelldoing the offensive damage in that one.

Davis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles that hitoff of the top of the outfield fence.

“I usually crowd the plate and make them come in on mebecause I pull it a lot, so she had to go away on me,” Davis said.“I told (Chavez) to tell me if the catcher set up outside. Bothdoubles (Chavez) gave me the sign and I connected.”

Davis’ fifth-inning double plated Silva and Kerry Allen andstretched Middle Tennessee’s lead to 3-0 at the time.Haskell was 3-for-4 and Silva was 2-for-3 in the winner’sbracket finals.

Of almost 70,000 alumni, ap-proximately 77 percent live in Tennessee.

During 89 years of existence, the Uni-versity has seen some remarkable changes, growing from a 100-acre campus with 125students and 19 faculty members to a 500-acre campus with over 750 faculty.

A comprehensive university, MTSUoffers more than 140 undergraduate pro-grams in its five colleges—Basic and Ap-plied Sciences, Business, Education andBehavioral Science, Liberal Arts, and MassCommunication—and over 55 graduateprograms, including doctoral degrees.

An important component of theAcademic Master Plan was the establish-ment of an Honors College, which wasapproved by the Tennessee Board of Re-gents and became a reality in Fall 1998.

The University’s progress and forwardmomentum is clearly evidenced by the ongo-

ing capital projects on campus. The newfour-story University Library opened forstudent use in January 1999. A new ap-proach to on-campus living, Scarlett Com-mons opened in Fall 1999, and the GreekRow Project was completed for the Spring2000 semester. Over $200 million in con-struction projectswere completed in the1990s or are cur-rently underway.

The Recreation Center

At a cost of $32.75 million, the new University Library is the crown jewel of MiddleTennessee’s building projects over the past 10 years. The library, which opened inJanuary 1999, spans 250,000 square feet and is capable of housing 800,000 vol-umes. The state-of-the-art design features study seating for 2,500 students and has350 public access computers that are connected to a variety of networks for research. In fact, the scope of the library’s network is so expansive that over 150 miles of cableconnects the computer terminals to the network. If electronic research doesn’t lead toanswers, the library subscribes to nearly 3,500 journals and other periodicals that arereadily available for student use. Fifty-three microtext readers and 14 microtextreaders with printers are accessible by students in the periodical section. Space in thelibrary has also been reserved for classroom usage and group study area. Weight Facility It is often said that the path

to athletic greatness leads throughthe weight room. This certainly ringstrue at Middle Tennessee, whereBlue Raider teams have a decidedadvantage over the majority of theiropponents. The addition to Johnny “Red”Floyd Stadium also allowed for a10,000-plus square foot weightroom facility adjacent to the Northend zone for use by all Middle Ten-nessee student-athletes. The endresult is a strength training area thatrivals any in the country. The weightroom has been lauded by many assuperior in the area, including SEC and Conference USA schools. This newest addition to the Blue Raider athletic facilities is thecrown jewel for all Middle Tennessee athletes. The facility, which opened in May of 1999, greets student-athletes with 20,714½ pounds of plates and dumbbells. The sheervolume of weights is not the most impressive aspect of the weightroom. It is equipped with nine Wynmor power racks, nine Wynmorplatforms and nine York half-racks. Hammer Strength equipmentrounds out the room with five ground-base jammers, a dead lift, aleg press, a leg curl and a leg extension. Other Hammer Strengthequipment in the facility includes a bench press, a military press, arow machine, neck machine, pull-up and pull-over. An impressive array of dumbbells is provided for the student-athletes’ use. Two sets of dumbbells ranging from five to 150pounds are kept on racks around the room. Mirrors ring the wallsto help student-athletes ensure that they are using proper formthroughout their workouts. Cardiovascular equipment such astreadmills and stationary bikes is also available for use in the facility. Some fringe benefits found in the weight room include atelevision with cable and a state-of-the-art sound system. Twooffices for the strength coaches are located in the room, along withrestrooms and a small hospitality area. The weight room also provides direct access to the footballstadium and a large meeting room. The meeting room is used notonly by the Blue Raider football team on game days and for filmbreakdown, but also by many others for press conferences, HPERSclasses and other functions. The meeting room is fully equipped withhigh tech audiovisual equipment to enhance the learning of students

using the space. The weight room issupervised by headstrength and condition-ing coach Matt Riley, associate Robb Rogers, assistant DarrenEdgington and gradu-ate assistants CedricWalthaw and Andy Wil-liams. Riley, a formerMiddle Tennessee foot-ball player, oversees theentire operation andwas responsible for thedesign and layout of thefacility. Following hisgraduation from Middle

Tennessee in 1988, Riley was the head strength and conditioningcoach at Tennessee Tech in 1989 and 1990 before taking over thesame role at Southern Miss in 1991 and 1992. Rogers, the National Strength Coach of the Year in 1996, is inhis second season with the Blue Raiders. Rogers, who is thecoordinator for all football strength and conditioning programs, came to Middle Tennessee after serving as the head strengthtrainer for the St. Louis Blues of the NHL. Along with strength training, Rogers is widely known for speeddevelopment and injury prevention. Every member of the strength and conditioning staff is highlyrespected and very knowledgeable in the field, which is a big reasonMiddle Tennessee athletes are in better shape today than in yearspast.

Athletic TrainingMiddle Tennessee's Athletic Training Program handles com-

plete training and rehabilitation for 17 NCAA-sanctioned sports. The athletic training staff is responsible for the day-to-day

health and welfare of each student-athlete at Middle Tennessee. This includes pre- and post-practice as well as game day situa-tions.

The trainers work in conjunction with team doctors and con-ditioning staff in the rehabilitation of injuries from shoulder ten-donitis to complete knee reconstruction.

The training program utilizes two fully-equipped trainingrooms within the athletic complexes at Middle Tennessee. Themain training room is located in the Murphy Center, which is beingrennovated and should be completed before the end of the 2001academic year. The other has been placed inside the Alumni Me-morial Gym.

The staff has three full-time certified athletic trainers andthe addition of up to three graduate assistants this year. The staffalso consists of nine student trainers.

With the new Athletic Training Program in place, Blue Raiderathletes are assured of the best care possible.

Murfreesboro, the home to Middle TennesseeState University, is one of the fastest growing commu-nities in the state of Tennessee. Located just 32 milesoutside Nashville, Murfreesboro has a storied past andan extremely bright future.

The city was founded in 1811, and was originallyknown as Cannonsburgh. The name was changed toMurfreesboro after only 33 days in honor of Revolu-tionary War Col. Hardy Murfree, one of the early set-tlers of the town. Murfreesboro, which is consideredthe geographic center of the state of Tennessee, servedas the state capital from 1819 to 1825. However, thelarger economic base and river port of Nashville drewthe capital status away from Murfreesboro. Murfrees-boro remained a significant economic center due tothe city’s location between Nashville and Chattanooga.

The geographics of Murfreesboro continue to aidits development. It is still an important stop along theNashville/Chattanooga route, but it is not that fact alonethat makes Murfreesboro so desirable. Its proximityto three major interstate routes in Tennessee make itreadily accessible from nearly anywhere in the state. Also, the Middle Tennessee area is located in the de-

mographic center of 70 percent of the population ofthe United States. These factors combine to gener-ate considerable growth in Murfreesboro.

Industry has become an important cornerstoneof the economy of Murfreesboro. Manufacturers suchas Aladdin, Nissan, Bridgestone/Firestone and Geor-gia Pacific have located in the Murfreesboro/Ruth-erford County area and make a continual impact onthe area. Recently, several shopping centers, restau-rants and other diversions have helped Murfrees-boro become one of the most sought-after communi-ties in the Mid-state region.

The city of Murfreesboro is the largest city inRutherford County with an estimated population over60,000. The county as a whole is home to approxi-mately 150,000 residents. Rutherford County hasseen unprecedented growth over the past few years.A state census estimate in 1995 showed that thepopulation of the county had increased 25 percent

since the 1990 census. During this time, Middle Tennessee as a whole has seen tremendouschange. Population increases, continued construction andincreased media attentionhave helped to thrust Nash-ville and the surrounding ar-eas into the forefront of ur-banism. This growth hascome with some problems, butit has also created some tre-mendous opportunities forthe residents of the area.Nashville constructed aworld-class downtown arenawhich opened early in 1997,and it has already attractedtwo professional sports ten-ants. The Nashville Kats ofthe Arena Football Leaguerecently completed their thirdyear of competition and theNHL’s Nashville Predatorsbegan prowling the ice in thefall of 1998. The NFL’s Ti-tans have taken up residencyin Nashville and play in thestate-of-the-art AdelphiaColiseum.

Murfreesboro is grow-ing by leaps and bounds, butit still has managed to retainmost of the small-town charm that made it so appealing years ago. Eventhough the town has gone through massive change in recent times, somethings have stayed the same. It remains a quality place to raise children, work and live. These qualities will keep Murfreesboro growing in a positivedirection.

In mythology, the winged horse pos-sessed superior cunning and speed. Thethundering horse of the gods was entrustedto carry the awesome lightning bolts andcould only be harnessed by a noble one witha pure heart. As with success in all things,it requires character as well as talent andstrength to mount and ride the fabled wingedhorse.

This winged horse is a fitting symbol ofa university that has earned its wings andexcels in many academic arenas, amongthem historic preservation, teacher train-ing, aerospace, political science, horse sci-ence and the recording industry. But thewinged horse is more than a symbol ofphysical accomplishment. It is also a symbolof character and the correct wielding ofpower.

The challenge of all great universitiesand university athletic departments is toadvance student-athletes in character aswell as ability, to allow powerful steeds tosoar at higher levels. This winged horse isa symbol to what Middle Tennessee stu-dents, athletes and alumni represent.

For its nobility and character, thewinged horse was once immortalized in thestars. Now, with breathtaking speed andthundering, unbridled power, lightningstrikes, forevermore, fear in the hearts ofBlue Raider opponents!

In the early days of athletics at MiddleTennessee State University, the teams wereknown by several nicknames. Among thesewere Teachers, Normalities and Peda-gogues.

In 1934, it was decided that the schoolneeded a specific nickname. During thefootball season of that year, the Murfrees-boro Daily News Journal held a contest toname the team.

Charles Sarver, then a Middle Tennes-see football player and later principal atWhite County High School in Sparta, wonthe $5 prize for his entry of “Blue Raiders.”Sarver later indicated he had “borrowed”the nickname of the Colgate Red Raiders, but substituted Middle Tennessee Blue forColgate Red.

Ever since that time, Middle Tennes-see athletic teams have been known as theBlue Raiders.

On January 17, 1998, the the currentmascot, “Lightning,” was born. The mascotwas unveiled along with an attractive eye-catching logo. The introduction of Lightninggave an identity to the nickname Blue Raid-ers.
