The WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project

3

WSMA State Honors Music ProjectThe Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Music Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented youth with the opportunity to rehearse and per-form with the nation’s finest conductors in a professional and highly disciplined setting. In 1995, WSMA proudly sponsored the first-ever Middle Level State Honors Band. A WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir was added in 1996, and in 1997, the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Orchestra made its debut performance.

Students in grades 6-8 who attend WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project. Auditions include an individual performance and an ensemble class taught by a WSMA certified adjudicator. This year, nearly 1,200 students applied to audition for the privilege of being one of the 316 students selected for membership in the three prestigious WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles.

Music teachers, parents, administrators and the WSMA staff contribute time, talent and encouragement for every student involved in the State Honors Muisc Project. Young musicians selected for these ensembles discover new levels of individual and group performance. Most importantly, the effort and dedication required of each Honors participant results in a lifelong memory of their initiative, achievement and commitment to excellence as musicians and as our future leaders.

ProgramAdoramus Te Quirino Gasparini ed. Rod Walker Alliance AMP 0274

The career of Italian composer Quirino Gasparini culminated with his appointment as maestro di capella of the Turin Chapel from 1760 until his death. Much admired during his day, Gasparini met Wolfgang Mozart and his father, Leopold Mozart, in 1771 and they established a friendship. Adoramus te was mistakenly attributed to Wolfgang Mozart until 1922, when it was ascertained that the work was really a copy in Leopold’s hand of a work by Gasparini. That the composition was thought to be from Mozart’s pen is a testament to its musical integrity.

Three Moravian Duets Antonin Dvorak ed. Henry Leck I. Allegro – Dyby Bula Kosa Nabrosena Hal Leonard 08744978 II. Allegro – Slavikovsky Polecko Maly III. Allegro Scherzando – Holub Na Javore

Set by Antonin Dvorak in 1876, these duets are from a group of 13 which can be sung by treble or SATB choirs. The mixed-voice arrangement was later completed by Czech composer Leos Janacek. Dvorak wrote 23 Moravian Duets in all, between 1875 and 1880. The texts, which use folk poetry from the villages and towns of Moravia, are rich in folk symbolism and Czech folk dance rhythms.

Alleluia Brazilian Psalm Jean Berger Hal Leonard 5048596

Composer Jean Berger (1909-2002) was born to a Jewish family in Hamm, Germany. From 1939 to 1941, he was assistant conductor of the Treatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro and on the faculty of the Conservatoire Brasileiro de Musica. In “Psalmo Brasileiro,” Berger embraces the South American rhythms and language with which he was so familiar. The text is a compilation of Psalm fragments and a prayer to the Blessed Virgin. These are followed by much rejoicing on that word which, of all words in any language, must be the word most often heard in choral music: Alleluia!

Holy Holy Holy Jeffrey La Valley Hal Leonard 08551643

A Wisconsin native, Jeffrey began his musical career at the age of five on a piano purchased for his older sister. Jeffrey studied journalism at Pennsylvania State University in Monaca, Pennsylvania, and at Marquette University in Milwaukee. In 1986, he began his formal musical studies, and enrolled in the music studies program at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. His greatest accomplishments have been in the field of gospel music. As a writer, musician, director, and/or producer, Jeffrey has appeared on over 160 albums. In 1987, he was commissioned to compose a song for Pope John IV during his Papal visit to Detroit, and in 1989, was awarded the G.M.W.A. Excellence Award for Song of the Year-Contemporary, “No Greater Love.”

Animal Crackers Eric Whitacre I. The Panther Hal Leonard 08746973 II. The Cow III. The Firefly

An accomplished composer, conductor and lecturer, Eric Whitacre has quickly become one of the most popular and performed composers of his generation. Though he had received no formal training before the age of 18, his first experiences singing in college choir changed his life, and he completed his first concert work, Go, Lovely, Rose, at the age of 21. Eric went on to the Juilliard School, earning his Master of Music degree and studying with Pulitzer Prize- and Oscar-winning composer John Corigliano.

Many of Whitacre’s works have entered the standard choral and symphonic repertories and have become the subject of several recent scholarly works and doctoral dissertations. His works “Water Night,” “Cloudburst,” “Sleep,” “Lux Aurumque” and “A Boy and a Girl” are among the most popular choral works of the last decade, and his “Ghost Train,” “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas” and “October” have achieved equal success in the symphonic wind community. He has received composition awards from the Barlow International Composition Competition, the American Choral Directors Association and the American Composers Forum. In 2001, Whitacre became the youngest recipient ever awarded the coveted Raymond C. Brock commission by the American Choral Directors Association.

Amavolovolo Traditional arr. Rudolf de Beer Hal Leonard 08749217

Rudolf de Beer, former conductor of the Drakensberg Boys Choir of South Africa arranged this popular Zulu traditional song. The arrangement stands as a vivid connection to the people and culture of South Africa. Authentic percussion and movement suggestions give this selection great visual appeal.

ProgramFinlandia Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) Belwin Mills

Throughout the 19th century, Finland was ruled by Russia and by the 1890s, Russian control was becoming increasingly oppressive. The tension reached its breaking point in February of 1899, when the Russians dissolved Finland’s legislature.

It was during this turbulent year that Sibelius composed the music for a series of patriotic tableaux presented at the Swedish Theater in Helsinki. It was customary to close such a series with the National Anthem, but Sibelius broke the tradition and composed a patriotic tone poem entitled Finlandia, which became a symbol of Finland’s struggle for independence.

Sea Songs Ralph Vaughan-Williams (1872-1958) Luck 31559

Sea Songs is a collection of three short British songs: “Princess Royal,” “Admiral Benbow” and “Portsmouth.” Vaughan-Williams originally arranged the piece for military band in 1923 and then transcribed it for orchestra in 1942.

Enigma Variations op. 36 Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Variation No. 9, “Nimrod” Luck 37539

Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra, Op. 36 is commonly referred to as the Enigma Variations. One of Elgar’s best-known compositions, the work is a set of a theme and fourteen variations. The composer dedicated the piece to “my closest friends pictured within,” each variation being a portrayal of one of his closest friends.

The Variation No. 9, “Nimrod,” represents Elgar’s friend and publisher A. J. Jaeger. In this music, Elgar recalls a moving conversation in which he and Jaeger discussed the greatness of Beethoven’s slow movements.

Hungarian Dances No. 1 and 5 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Carl Fischer

The Hungarian Dances are a set of 21 lively dance pieces based on Hungarian themes. They were originally published as piano duets in 1869 and in 1872 Brahms wrote a version for solo piano. In 1873 he orchestrated three of the dances.

Both dances No. 1 and No. 5 are written in a three-part form (A-B-A). They both have sudden dramatic changes of tempo, rhythm, character and tonality. Dance No. 5, originally in F-sharp minor, is the most celebrated of the entire set.

ProgramVelocity Larry Neeck Barnhouse

Striking sonorities and driving rhythms characterize this fast-paced opener, a mixed-meter composition with a “driving intensity” from start to finish. Splashes of percussion color and alternating sonorous and jagged melodies and harmonies in the winds sustain interest and intensity throughout the work.

Mr. Neeck holds a B.A. in Music from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.M. in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), and the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA).

In addition to composing, Mr. Neeck teaches instrumental music in the Webster (NY) Central School District. He directs concert bands, jazz ensembles, and is co-founder and director of the Willink Middle School Student/Parent Band.

Divinum Mysterium Prudentius arr. James Swearingen Birch Island Press

Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, a Roman Christian poet, was born in 348 in the beautiful province of Tarraconensis, Spain. Early Christian authors, such as Tertullian and St. Ambrose, as well the Bible, had a profound influence on his poetry. His Christmas plainsong hymn “Divinum Mysterium” continues to be extremely popular and is often performed throughout the year in various church settings.

Where the River Flows James Swearingen Barnhouse

This three movement work tells the story of a pioneer family in the late 1700’s that settles in the Ohio River Valley. The first movement depicts not only the beauty of their dreams, but of the land they decided to settle in. Remembering the conflict with the Shawnee Indians, two of the young boys are abducted by the Indians and one boy willingly goes with the Indians to save his brother. The second movement opens and closes with the sad cry of the mother to “Bring Back My Child.” The young boy never returns, but is raised by the Shawnee and becomes the great chief Blue Jacket because of the coat he was wearing when captured. The third movement depicts his rise to leadership and his struggle to keep his tribe alive. Blue Jacket and the Shawnee are no match for the white army and are eventually defeated and are forced to leave their home.

Rough Riders Karl King Barnhouse

This is a true American march, with all the drive and toe tapping you would expect. Karl King wrote over 290 works for band and is considered a march legend. This march is reminiscent of King’s early days with the Barnum and Bailey Circus Band.

The Message on the Rock Robert Sheldon Alfred

This piece is a musical representation of a rather unique artwork that can be found in a field west of Des Moines, in Adair County, Iowa. Artist Ray Sorenson of Greenfield, Iowa discovered a rock that had, for some time, been painted with graffiti. He decided that the rock should be properly painted once and for all, and did so with remarkable skill. He emblazoned the sides of the rock with battle scenes from our nation’s history, including Washington’s crossing the Delaware and a scene from 9-11. Fragments of speeches from American presidents are included and an American flag drapes the rock – now known as “Freedom Rock.”

WSMA State Honors Music Project Endowment Fund

In October 2006, the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music announced its most ambitious campaign to date, a $6 million goal to endow each chair and conductor of the WSMA Middle Level and High School State Honors Music Project. With each chair endowed, a student’s cost to participate would be minimal or paid for entirely and the costs to bring in nationally renowned conductors would be covered through this endowment.

WFSM is proud to recognize the following people who contributed generously to name a chair in the Middle Level State Honors Music Project:
