Service to the Community

It is important to note that as most of my more recent research has been participatory in nature, there is a service element to the work. Indeed, the integration of new and innovative scholarship with community priorities and goals is a crucial element of contemporary social science research with Indigenous Communities. Much of the scholarship reported below has significance in both the community and the academy, and intentionally so. In part, the work we have been doing with both the Métis and the Urban Aboriginal communities has national and international significance precisely because of the way scholarly and community priorities are balanced.

Other Relevant Information

Some of my more recent work straddles the domains of traditional scholarly activity and more applied/professional contributions. Essential to my role as an applied social scientist is a core concern for participatory values in terms of both research process and research products. Indeed some of my traditional scholarly work is directed at these issues. Much of my time over the last 5 years has been focussed on research products that reflect a concern for community accessibility – this is a form of professional practice that is increasingly de rigour in Indigenous studies. My CV reflects professional activities in two other ways as well. The fruits of my partnership with Stephen Foster and other videographers (see section “Artistic Works, Performances, Designs” below) are artistic ones. Although not a professional artist myself, I contributed centrally to in conceiving, developing, and executing research that has led to new ways to create and then present images of Aboriginal communities. The impetus for these range from concerns for facilitating knowledge translation to a desire to facilitate community participation in self-representation (Evans at el 2009). Though these pursuits are not universal among social scientists, they fall within the scope of traditional practice of academically based artists, and reflect my commitment to interdisciplinary work.

Even more squarely within the scope of professional practice is my collaboration with the Métis Nation BC around the creation of web-based tools for governance. The MNBC has struggled to develop forms of governance appropriate and responsive to its dispersed citizenship. The Web 2.0 applications that we have developed to support MNBC governance also have core functions for knowledge translation and community based research. Indeed, taken together the databases described below facilitate research in ways barely imaginable 20 years ago. The MNBC – UBC research collaboration provides remarkable resources for students and communities; it is also growing into a framework for generating research and research/knowledge translation through active and ongoing partnership. The research has already developed some tools for this, while also developing human capacity in the form of students and community participants. The databases described below are part of an iterative process based in respectful and mutually advantageous relationship, and have synergistic consequences. For example, the recently awarded CIHR research grant (Hutchinson PI) is predicated on data that comes directly from the MNBC Harvester Database, and the appropriate partnership with the MNBC to allow the use of that data.

All of the databases below have similar potentials. The MNBC Historical Document database is inherently iterative, community based, and interactive, But the others, and most centrally the relationship I have developed with the MNBC as an organization is mutually respectful, responsive, and designed to meet BOTH community and scholarly goals. The strength of the relationship is demonstrable in the resources the MNBC have committed to supporting it, and the tools and capacity developed; more scholarly products are pending.

Databases

2006-2010 “Métis Nation of BC Historical Document Database”. This is a large database (currently there are over 11000 files within it) mounted on Knowledge Tree software, consisting of a combination of primary and secondary historical documents (census indexes, vital statistic records, church records, maps, HBC archival material, etc.) pertinent to the understanding of the Métis presence in BC and western Canada. The database is integrated into the Métis Nation of BC Citizenship Registry, and both receives files from, and contributes to, Métis Citizens applying for registration as a Métis at that registry. It is also networked throughout the Province of BC via MNBC regional registry clerks, and serves as a resource for Métis Locals and Métis people throughout the Province. The database is currently restricted to MNBC staff, but a significant portion of the database was made publicly accessible in March 31, 2008. See http://document.bcmetiscitizen.ca/ **

2007-2010 “Métis Nation of BC Land Use and Harvest History Database”. This is a Google map based database currently containing the harvest histories of some 75 individual Métis harvesters. The database is designed to calculate and map harvest densities on the basis of these individuals; it also includes the capacity to map the harvesting activities of family units. Access is currently restricted.

2007-2009 “Métis Nation Harvester Database and Management Tool.” This database includes the capacity to manage and record the activities of individual harvesters on a yearly basis, including the management of harvests by species and location. Access is currently restricted.

2008-2010 “Lives Lived West of the Rockies: A Biographical Dictionary of the Western Fur Trade to 1858.” This database is the product of collaboration with historian Bruce Watson, and includes over 3000 entries of fur trade related biographies. Access is currently restricted.
