Michael A. Stelzer, Ph.D. “Electrical research is my favorite task, as it permits new technology to be created.” Michael Stelzer Dr. Stelzer’s passion for academics is clear upon examining his impressive foundations of degrees, certifications, and research history. One of his most recent accomplishments was becoming the first student at Old Dominion University to earn a Ph.D. in electrical engineering with an emphasis in marine-related energy generation. He utilized his extensive background in engineering, and his U.S. Navy experience to complete his dissertation: “Evaluation of Ocean-Energy Conversion Based on Linear Generator Concepts.” As a graduate research assistant for the department of electrical and computer engineering at Old Dominion University, Dr. Stelzer completed simulation studies that looked at the possibility of extracting electrical energy from ocean waves as a green and renewable energy alternative. Dr. Stelzer continues his affiliation with the Old Dominion University as an adjunct professor. He is currently seeking a full-time position as a college professor. He offers expertise from more than two decades of engineering experience in the academic setting and the public sector, as well as from his time served as an aviation electronic technician and supervisor for the U.S. Navy. Additionally, Dr. Stelzer is an extremely well-rounded person, having made many achievements in the areas of martial arts, bodybuilding, publication, Web design and development, and more. Q. On what topic(s) do you consider yourself to be an expert? A. Electrical/thermal modeling, alternative energy sources, electrical engineering, research, design and repair, technical writing, and martial arts.

Q. What characteristics help to separate you from your competitors? A. My experience working in various fields from within my engineering discipline separates me. I worked for nine years in repairing electronic circuits in the U.S. Navy for the aviation community, and have experience in the shipbuilding industry in the engineering/design profession. Additionally, I have research experience working as a research engineer for Old Dominion University.

Q. What is the most significant issue facing your profession today? A. The depletion of natural resources, which gives rise to the creation of unique methods for generating alternative “green” energy.

Q. What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of your profession? A. Exploring new territory in my field and creating methods to overcome any shortcomings or difficulties.
