The MIB is designed for individuals with a strong business orienta-

tion (a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business or a related field

and/or significant work experience in the field) who wish to deepen

their understanding of international business practices and opportuni-

ties. This specialized degree focuses on the key skills, behaviors, and

techniques critical to understanding and succeeding in today’s global

environment.

Our Master of International Business program is flexible, allowing

you to pursue an advanced degree that’s compatible with your work

schedule and family commitments. You can enroll either full-time or

part-time, and you can enter the program at the start of any semes-

ter. You also have the option of completing the MIB as part of a Dual

Degree program with one of our partner schools in The Americas,

Europe, or Asia (see pages 10-11).

We offer joint degree programs with the Master of Science in Finance

(MSF) and with the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program

within the FIU Chapman Graduate School of Business, as well as with

the FIU Law School (JD). Under the joint degree programs, a student

can obtain both degrees in less time than it would take to obtain both

degrees if pursued consecutively.

topics that were important to me.

All of the theoretical training is applied to the real world, I found that to be very useful.

Contemporary Curriculum

Our program’s international and multicultural per-spectives infuse all coursework. In addition to the traditional classroom lectures and presentations by faculty and guest speakers, you’ll participate in case studies, team research projects, and ana-lytical exercises; get involved in class discussions, study groups, and written and oral presentations; and take an active part in computer modeling and analyses, role playing, and global corporate simu-

lations. The result is a dynamic teaching and learn-ing environment for faculty and students alike. It’s a setting that fosters interaction, fresh insights, and lasting knowledge.

There are plenty of opportunities for you to tailor the program to your particular interests. We offer a Dual Degree program where you can earn a second master’s degree at one of our partner institutions, an International Business Trip, and a Master’s Project in which you will serve as a consultant to an international company – all geared to add more value to your experience.

You’ll find your classmates in the MIB pro-gram reflect the imagination and diversity of the global community. The average age of our MIB student is 27, and approximately 42 percent of our candidates are women. In the last 3 years alone, more than 30 countries were represented in FIU’s Master of International Business classes.

PROGRAM CURRICULUM

The MIB consists of 36 credit hours of coursework –10 courses of three-credit hours each, one three-credit hour elective, and a three-credit hour seminar course.The program is designed to be taken as a series of

courses – mostly without a specific sequence –offering optimum flexibility.

Two workshops are required of all incoming students; one in Accounting and one in Data Analysis.

Introduction to International Business (Must be taken at the beginning of the program)

This is a three-part series seminar which includes the following topics: • Introduction to International Business: You will gain a broad perspective of what it means to do business in today’s global economy.

• Current Events: Explore an array of current issues that affect international business through discussions with experts and invited speakers, including senior executives from global companies.

• International Entrepreneurship: Explore the realm of new venture initiation and be challenged to think in entrepreneurial terms by presenting a new international business idea.

Core Courses

International Business Envionment: (Pre-requisite to International Business Policy) Examine the environmental variables that impact the conduct of business across borders. You’ll study both economic and social-political analyses in terms of how they affect and shape the conduct of internatonal trade and investment.

International Management: Explore the managerial practices and functions that characterize successful international corporations. You’ll analyze issues dealing with organizational structure, planning and budgeting systems, management development and human resources, ethics, cross-cultural issues, the applicability and adaptation of culture-bound policies, communications, and the management of multi-cultural teams.

International Accounting: Learn about accounting concepts and practices in different countries and the convergence of international accounting standards. You’ll focus on the problems associated with accounting in multinational corpora-tions, including the transfer of funds and income measurements, consolidation problems, transfer pricing, and issues of international mergers and acquisitions.

Global Financial Strategies: Gain an in-depth understanding of the international financial environment and the policies involved in managing the financial func-tion in multinational corporations. You’ll examine the role of major multilateral financial institutions, international capital flows, international capital budgeting, and the management of financial risks in international markets.

Managing Global Production and Technology: Explore the management of tech-nology and its relationship to the dynamics of globalization of production in both manufacturing and service industries. You’ll study the management of interna-tional supply chains, the coordination of manufacturing and service activities across geographies, and the role of international business process outsourcing.

International Marketing: Examine the role of marketing in the multinational or-ganization. You’ll learn how to plan and execute multi-country marketing strat-egies, manage and control international marketing operations, and evaluate global customers.

International Business Law: Consider the legal environment and regulatory problems facing international business and multinational corporations. You’ll gain an understanding of international regulatory institutions and the framework of international trade and investment law, as well as antitrust law, regulations of technical transfers, securities law, and intellectual property and contracts.

International Business Policy: Learn what it takes to design and implement cor-porate strategies in a rapidly developing and changing world environment, where forecasting, planning, and contingency strategies are key to your success. The course is taught by the case method and stresses the environmental and insti-tutional constraints on decision making within the organization.

International Human Resource Management: This course looks at decisions about how to recruit, train, compensate, and manage global employees. It looks at cross-cultural differences in values, and managing international assignments.

Master’s Project in International Business: (Must be taken in the final semester)This course, which you will take during your last semester, serves as a synthe-sis to the program. See page 8 for a broader description.

Elective Courses (choose one)

International Entrepreneurship: Introduction to entrepreneurship in internationalcontexts and its role in economic development.

Special Topics in International Business (as an option, it can be at a partner institution abroad).

Internship: Allows graduate students to work in jobs significantly related to their major area of study and career goals. This is supervised work with carefully de-signed and monitored work assignments. Specific placement must be approved by the faculty advisor prior to enrollment. Work performed on the current job cannot be used for internship credit.

The Master’s Project –a highlight of the MIB program– gives you the in-valuable opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in applying the concepts learned throughout the program. Organized in multinational groups, you and your team members will be management consultants for a semester under the direction of a faculty member. You’ll be assigned to a company or non-profit organization that has agreed to participate in the program by contributing a current interna-tional strategic or operational issue that they are facing. After research-ing the problem and analyzing the data obtained, you will present your findings and recommendations to company executives at the end of the semester. Some recent Master’s Projects have included: a location analysis for the Latin American operations of an information industry firm; a buy vs. lease recommendation for an entertainment industry company looking to ex-pand their international footprint; a South Asian market entry strategy for a medical supplies company; a survey of business-to-business opportuni-ties in South Florida for a European hospitality chain; and a benchmark study of centralized vs. decentralized organizational models of handling local and international operations for a supply chain management firm.

The Master of International Business at FIU gave me the opportunity to have one of the most unforgettable

travel experiences of my life.

In Spring 2009, the MIB organized an amazing trip to DUBAI, the most populous of the seven United Arab Emirates, in order to enrich multi-

cultural learning with important real practice. Dubai shows a lesson to the

world: There are no impossibles...

We also visited some important com-panies and financial entities in order

to study their business culture, vision, and work strategies.

Thank you, FIU, for getting us closer to other cultures in this vast world.

This multicultural learning will defi-nitely result key in our professional

development.

Each year, students in the MIB program are invited to learn more about the global marketplace

through par ticipation in the International Business Trip. This 10-day excursion, designed to illustrate how business is done outside of the United States, features visits with execu-tives from international corporations as well as cultural visits.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TRIP

The Master of International Business group assembles in

front of the landmark Jumeirah Mosque, the largest mosque in

Dubai. Built in 1978 in the medieval Fatimid style, it is the only

mosque in Dubai open to non-Muslims.

A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES

As a leader in international business education, we offer you the chance to earn complementary business degrees in two countries through our network of distinguished part-ner schools. In a feature that is unique to our Dual Degree program, partner schools accept credits earned by stu-dents at both institutions and provide an integrated struc-ture, allowing you to seamlessly transition and acquire a second degree. That makes the Dual Degree program fast-er and less expensive than pursuing two separate degrees sequentially.

In the program, you’ll gain a deeper exposure to interna-tional business by living and studying in a different cul-ture and business environment for at least 8-9 months.Additionally, you’ll gain access to two networks of business contacts and colleagues and exposure to two sets of po-tential employers.

If you’re a student from a partner school, you would typi-cally complete one year toward your MBA degree at your home institution first and then attend the MIB program at the Chapman School for two semesters to complete both degrees. If you are a Chapman School student, you would begin your studies in our MIB program and then transfer to a partner institution to complete your requirements for their MBA degree.

International students participating in the program at FIU have the option of applying for a 12-month Optional Practi-cal Training (OPT) at a U.S.-based corporation once they have earned their dual degrees.

At the heart of our Master of International Business program is FIU’s prestigious faculty. You can expect to be en-

lightened by our faculty’s depth of knowledge and richness of background. Florida International University has some

of the best business scholars in the nation, and it is the finest among this elite group who teach in the MIB program.

Constance Bates (DBA, Indiana University) teaches International Management. Her areas of expertise include creativity, innovation, and international busi-ness.

Wendy Gelman (JD, University of Miami) teaches International Business Law. Her areas of expertise include business law; international business law; estate planning; income, estate, and employment tax; and online learning.

Jerry Haar (PhD, Columbia University) teaches the Current Events Seminar. His areas of expertise in-clude multinational corporate strategy; regional eco-nomic integration; business-government relations; entrepreneurship, innovation and competitiveness; and marketing in Latin American and U.S. Hispanic markets.

Ali Parhizgari (PhD, University of Maryland) teaches Global Financial Strategies. Dr. Parhizgari’s research focuses on global financial strategy, international finance, investment, corporate finance, and quanti-tative techniques. His many publications have ap-peared in numerous refereed journals.

Emmanuel Roussakis (PhD, Catholic University of Louvain) teaches Global Financial Strategies. His areas of expertise include commercial banking; in-ternational banking; and international finance/glob-al financial strategy.

William Schneper (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) teaches International Business Environment. His areas of expertise include business policy and strat-egy; corporate governance; financial services indus-try; global strategy and alliances; and inter-firm co-operation and rivalry.

Jose de la Torre (DBA, Harvard University) teaches International Business Policy. His areas of exper-tise include international corporate strategy; joint ventures; management of inter-corporate alliances; multinational strategy; and organizational issues in global companies.

John Wrieden (JD, George Mason University School of Law) teaches International Business Law. He is a well-known expert in the legal environment of busi-ness, trade law, employment law and public policy.

That’s why from the time you’re accepted into our program, our Career Management Services group works to help you gain the knowledge, skills, and savvy to be a competitive force in today’s challenging job market.

We provide extensive services so that you

can be an active participant in the continuing

development, evaluation, and implementation

of your personal career plans. In fact, we can

help you create a personal marketing plan.

Our workshops focus on topics such as writing resumes, preparing for and handling the job interview, developing job-search strategies, and effective networking. We also provide self-assessment tools, individual advising, resume referral, and help arranging on-campus interviews for internships and permanent positions. An internship may take the place of up to 3 elective credits.

Together we’ll get results. Recent graduates of the MIB program are employed by companies that include Global Trading Service Inc., Aetna, Avisena, Dassault Systems, American International Group, Master Staffing Inc. and Nokia.

We consider candidates for admission to the MIB program on the basis of their individual applications. Since we strive to build a multi-faceted, close-knit learning community, we look at all applicants carefully before making our selections.

The basic requirements are outlined below:• A four-year bachelor’s degree in business or a related field (e.g., accounting but not economics) from an accredited college or university. Alternatively, one year completed of an accredited MBA program.• A grade point average of 3.0 or better based on upper-division coursework.• A minimum of two years of work experience in a management position, plus a strong interest in or previous experience in doing business internationally.• Official GMAT or GRE scores.• The TOEFL or IELTS exam. A comprehensive test of English language skills, is required of all applicants whose primary language is not English and who did not graduate from an English-speaking university.

NOTE: Admission requirements and application procedures are different for participants in the Dual Degree Program. Please contact the MIB office or visit our website for specific details.

In selecting participants for our MIB program, we take a holistic approach. In addition to the requirements listed above, the Admissions Committee considers the following: po-tential for significant growth; ability to do graduate work in business; ability to contribute to the study team and potential class participation; maturity and motivation; and abil-ity and willingness to complete the program. Application Procedure

There’s no need to wait until you have gathered all of your materials together to apply. We suggest that you submit your online application as soon as possible and the rest of the materials as you complete them.

Each applicant must submit the following:

• A graduate online application at mib.fiu.edu• Official transcript(s) from every college/university attended in an envelope sealed by the degree-granting institution(s)• Official proof of degree (a copy of the original diploma) if the degree is not posted on the official transcript• Official test scores sent directly by the Educational Testing Service. When requesting that official scores be submitted, please refer to Florida International University institutional code 5206 • Updated resume of professional experience• Statement of purpose – A one-page essay describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a master’s degree at FIU. This essay may be substituted for the essay completed during the online application• A non-refundable $30 application fee, which you may either pay on-line with your application using a credit card, or mail in a check made payable to Florida International University

Non-U.S. citizens and/or residents will be required to submit additional documentation in order to apply for a student visa. Please contact our office for a list of these require-ments.

We encourage applicants to submit their application packets early. Please refer to the MIB’s website at mib.fiu.edu for current deadlines.

Fees For the most current fee information, be sure to contact the program office or visit mib.fiu.edu. A non-refundable deposit is due upon acceptance into the program. The tuition balance is paid on a semester basis upon registration. Those who leave the program receive no refunds.

Because state law prohibits the university from extending credit, fee payment cannot be delayed beyond the start of classes or financed by the MIB program or the university. An exception to the advance payment policy will be made only for those pro-gram participants who have been granted financial aid by the university (scholarship, fellowship, loan) and granted a deferment.

If a participant expects to receive aid from other sources for all or part of the program fee but will not receive that aid in time to meet the advance payment deadline, he or she should arrange for financing through a bank or other financial institution to ensure that the program fee is paid on time.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

We recommend that you begin thinking about your financial aid needs and options dur-ing the initial admissions process. Our Master of International Business program’s staff acts as a liaison between applicants and the FIU Financial Aid Office to facilitate the timely processing of financial assistance and loan applications. Scholarships are avail-able for domestic and international students with outstanding credentials. We help ap-plicants determine what scholarship or loan programs may be available and urge them to submit their application forms as early as possible.

Florida International University (fiu.edu), one of Florida’s eleven state

universities, is Miami’s largest university with more than 39,000 students,

The College of Business Administration (business.fiu.edu) is FIU’s largest

professional college with close to 7,000 undergraduate students, 1,300 graduate students, 100 full-time

faculty and 31,000 alumni. The college and its programs are accredited by the AACSB International – the

Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

At the Chapman Graduate School of Business (chapman.fiu.edu), in addition to the Master of International

Business program described in this brochure, we offer an Executive MBA; International MBA; part-time MBAs

in various formats and locations; specialized master’s programs in

Finance, Management Information Systems, International Real Estate,

Human Resource Management, Accounting, and Taxation; and a PhD in

Business Administration.

Through our academic departments and research centers, the

College of Business Administration also provides executive education,

customized professional training and certificate programs, online

learning programs, seminars, short courses and conferences,

collaborative research, specialized study abroad, and graduate

The MIB program attracted me because international business is not an ad-hoc component; the entire program is concentrated on interna-tional business.

One of the main reasons why I chose the MIB is the diversity of the student body. In our program 90 to 95 percent were people who came from all over the world.

The FIU MIB program is incredibly strong academically. Despite all of my business experience, I have learned many new methodologies and ideas that I can apply to the international business arena.

The fact that Miami is the gateway to Latin America opens the door for students to do internships or work for multinational companies.
